NBFC Indie Member Spotlight!

Earlier this summer I was looking at the list of films being made through the co-op and noticed there was a large gap in August, with nothing going on. I decided that if no one else was shooting anything, I was going to. So I pulled out a script I'd written for NotaBle Acts, put together the smallest crew ever, and shot True Hollywood Romance right in the middle of one of the busiest months the co-op has ever had.

THR is a film about Brandy, a young girl who believes in true love, and so she waits in the park at midnight waiting for Mr Right to come along.

However, it turns out Mr Right is whoever happens to cross her path. When Mark walks past her park bench on a fateful summer night, he's in for quite

a night.

Emily Brennan (formerly Carter), plays Brandy, and Alex Richards plays Mark. I've worked with Emily before and she's always fun to work with, taking words on a page and making them truly come alive. Alex has never acted before, and I thought he was excellent as the poor, confused Mark. With Keith Ruttan as John, the punchline of the film, my actors all went above and beyond what I hoped it would be.

My crew was pretty awesome too. Rob Gemmell made his debut as director of photography, and it was great working with him in this capacity. Rob and I shared a brain on the vision of this project and I'm really happy with how it looks. Gary Beatty was my gaffer, and his knowledge was a huge asset to

the film. Allen Galloway on sound and on stills photography was a huge help, as always. And Kayleigh (Kiwi) Smith as the entire art department kept me (mostly) on budget and helped me make the film look exactly the way I wanted it to.

This film was a lot of fun to shoot, and after the chaos and complexity of The Morning After, my Short Film Venture film that I shot last summer, this

was a very relaxed, low key shoot. It's nice to just get out there and have some fun once in a while without taking everything too seriously.

We'll be heading to the editing suite in September, and will have this film ready for SWFF 2010. A big thanks to my cast and crew, for being so awesome,

and thanks to Bob and Jessi Jones for letting me shoot in their yard.

First Weekend Club and Women in Film and Television–Atlantic Present…

The Baby Formula

Directed by Alison Reid

In the beginning... sperm came from men

Two adventurous women in love are desperate to have their own biological child. They take a chance on an experimental scientific process and make sperm from their own stem cells. Pregnant with humour and unexpected twists, their journey tailspins out of control when their families discover there is no father.

FREDERICTON Screening: 7:00 pm Monday, August 24, doors open at 6:30 pm at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre, 732 Charlotte Street. Q&A and reception with Director Alison Reid follow film screening.

Tickets: $10 at the door/$8 WIFT-AT Members

The Baby Formula is truly a story of life imitating art: the coincidences that occurred in the making of this film blur the line between fiction and reality.

Press Kit/Trailers/Stills at http://thebabyformula.wordpress.com/stills/

"Alison Reid" <stunts@rogers.com>Director, Alison Reid was on the festival circuit with her short film, Succubus – a dramedy about Athena and Lilith, a lesbian couple attempting to conceive a baby that is a true biological combination of them both – when she discovered that lead actresses, Angela Vint and Megan Fahlenbock were both pregnant!

Reid immediately saw an opportunity for a feature length sequel. The premise of the The Baby Formula would be that Athena and Lilith are the first women in the world giving birth to each other’s babies.

Reid wanted to shoot over the course of Angela and Megan’s pregnancies, so time was of the essence. There was no opportunity to raise funding or follow the normal script development process. Richard Beattie immediately started writing the script, and shooting began before the script was near completion. And when the unexpected happened as is often the case with pregnancies… new scenes were written on the spot.

Kaylee will be providing her unique musical stylings at the August 24th reception following the screening of "The Baby Formula". Check out her official FB site and join up.

"To be honest, this was the first time I have heard her and my impression is wow"

Kaylee learned to play music on a 12 string guitar. Originally from Bathurst, now residing in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Kaylee was raised in a musical family. Her love for music began with her father.

Sightings

Dialogue New Brunswick is shooting a documentary on the bilingual play called “Parlez Games”. The play is about the 40th anniversary of the Official Languages Act.  “Parlez Games” is written and performed by the Calithumpians Theatre Company based out of Fredericton. Peter Pacey, the producer of the Calithumpians states “The message of the play is the positive benefits of bilingualism to the province of New Brunswick.” When asked about what he was hoping to achieve by presenting the play across the province he said “We have the ability to show people that it is possible for the Francophones and Anglophones to live in harmony. The more we know each other the more we appreciate each other.”

Several Film Co-op members are on the crew: Michel Guitard, Bruce LeGrow, Travis Grant, Jesse Anthony, and Youssef El-Khoury. The documentary shoot will wrap up in September. The documentary is about the unique way in which the Calithumpians go about creating their plays without a script in addition to the impact of the Official Languages Act.

The plan is to have the documentary online on Dialogue New Brunswick’s website (www.dialoguenb.org) once the project is completed.
