The Location Sound Recordist
August 4/5 (Sat/Sun) - 10am-6pm
Georges Hannan - Sound Recordist
Despite being primarily a visual medium, nothing can ruin a film experience faster or more completely than poor sound quality. Mistakes with the camera can sometimes be salvaged through creative editing. Mistakes in sound recording have no place to hide. There is no such thing as “fixing it in post” and quality sound must be captured live on set. This advanced workshop is designed to give trainees a fundamental understanding of the theories and practices behind recording quality location sound. The material will cover basics such as recording principal dialogue, sound effects wild lines, effective microphone placement, and the maintenance of log sheets.
Trainees will be given assignments to record sound under various trying conditions. They will be asked to explain why they made certain choices and their results will be critiqued by the instructor. Trainees should emerge from the advanced workshop with a theoretical and practical understanding of how to record location sound on a film or television set. Specifically, they will emerge with the following skill sets:
• Comprehensive understanding of sound basics for film and television
• Metering and how to use it
• Sound kit basics, care and maintenance
• Using a sound mixer
• Effective microphone tips and techniques
• Sound “Settiquette” - roles and responsibilities on a set
• Maintaining sound log sheets
