Giles Walker - Advanced Directing

The workshop will emphasize the following:

·   Choosing and adapting a script for production
·   Casting - techniques and procedures
·   Rehearsal techniques, character creation, the use of improvisation
·   Adapting the script to your reality i.e. your resources, cast and locations
·   Pre-production, the director’s role
·   Script preparation
·   Shot-Listing versus Storyboarding
·   Planning your shoot
·   Blocking for the camera
·   Shooting a scene
·   Why respecting the script is important
·   Maintaining your “vision”, judging what you are actually getting
·   Adapting to setbacks on the set
·   Managing your time, working with the crew and cast

Participants are encouraged to submit a 2-3 page scene for two or three characters, which takes place in one location (ideally a set that can be created within the Co-Op space, using existing furniture and props). Preferably, this should be an original scene, written by the participant, but it can be adapted from a previously produced film or an unproduced script. It should not be derived from a stage play.

Up to 4 scripts will be chosen and shot during the two-day workshop.

Prerequisite: None

Background on the Instructor
A veteran of 35 years in the film industry, Giles Walker has been teaching and giving workshops throughout his career.  Most recently, he taught the popular “Directing Docudrama” course in the winter session at UNB. He has also given workshops at the Summer Institute of Film, The National Screen Institute, IFCO and the NFB. He has lectured at Concordia, McGill and Champlain College and spoken at more high-school career days than he can possibly remember. He has mentored several young filmmakers over the years, many of whom are now established professionals in the industry.

Walker believes strongly that you learn to direct by directing. Consequently, his workshops are very much hands-on with an emphasis on casting, working with actors, script preparation, shot-listing, blocking for the camera and the shoot itself.
