MEMBER PROFILE - JONATHAN COLLICOTT

The Heavens Are Opening Up In Fredericton

If gods and goddesses are seeking close ups, they will have an opportunity here in Fredericton in the very near future.  Heavenly Gifts, “a silent musical of mythical proportions” will be shooting here in the capital city in March and April.

Heavenly Gifts is an experimental film that combines three classic elements; the mythical Greek tale of Pygmalion, the charm of silent era cinema and the musical films from the 1930’s to the 1950’s. The film blends these ideas into a modern pastiche...digging deep into the consciousness of an artist whose obsession with conventional beauty threatens to ruin his chances at finding true love, or worse yet, set him on a date with his maker!

Currently in preproduction, the film is involving many talented people from the city and surrounding areas.  “There is a very generous team behind all this” says Jon Collicott, Director of the film.   “We have a very talented group working extremely hard in preproduction.  Glendon McKinney is the Production Designer. He is working practically around the clock, along with Costume Designer Dwayne Stoddard and Property Master James Kennedy.  They are making this script come alive, creating another world.”

Roberta Nixon (Co-Producer and Production Manager) is currently getting shooting arrangements into order and gathering crew. David Dedourek (Composer) is working many miracles in the music department and Nicole Guimond (Choreographer) is poised to work with her team of dancers.  “Some people are calling this an ambitious project. Collicott says. “We agree! Our group feels that this is a challenge, but the best part is that we are enjoying the creativity involved in such a fantasy film. It is part of the joy of being filmmakers!”

The Director also notes that he has a stellar principal cast in Thomas Fanjoy, Shauna Singer, Amy Ganong, and Darcy Worth.  “This group of actors are all dedicated and extremely professional. I am very excited to get onto the set with this group and work with them as they make this story come alive.”

Collicott also stated that he would like to acknowledge the generous support of the Fredericton Community Arts Project (FCAP), Arts NB, Cultural Capitols of Canada, Department of Canadian Heritage, The City of Fredericton, The Bonnie Kilburn Dancers, The Centre for Arts and Technology and the New Brunswick Filmmakers’ Cooperative.  “Without organizations such as these, it would be extremely difficult to make these types of projects happen. As part of our mandate set fourth with FCAP, we are so looking forward to rolling this film out to the public in late 2011.”

In the meantime, these filmmakers are beating the bushes looking for people who are interested in working on this volunteer show. If you have an interest, look us up in the want ads of the Co-op e-news, look us up on facebook at our group page “Heavenly Gifts Movie” or contact Roberta Nixon at robertanixon@rogers.com or at (506) 455-1271. We are looking for crew for many departments!

Profile on renewed members - john christenson

In 1997 John decided to join the Filmmakers’ Co-op. His first words at his first AGM were “if I don’t get involved, I won’t be involved” and over the past 14 years John has done his best to be just that, involved. He has volunteered on over 20 productions and has served several times on the Board of Directors – three times as President. He aided in the creation of the Tidal Wave and Silver Wave Film Festivals, the Certificate in Film and Television Training Program and the Under the Stars Classic Film Series. Lately, John can be found volunteering at the Monday Night Film Series.

Outside his involvement at the Film Co-op, John, as co-writer on the project, is excited by the announcement that Omaha Fly-By was the recent winner of the CBC 3-2-1 Award that will see it go into production in early April. John is looking forward to a year filled with new writings, new productions and, most importantly, his first grandchild. Working as a freelance Graphic Designer and Copywriter John spends his downtime with family, scriptwriting and volunteering with the Marysville Heritage Committee.
