PROFILE ON LONG TERM MEMBER COLIN SMART

CAT: How long have you been involved with the NB Film Co-op and how did you get involved?

COLIN: Officially I have been a card carrying member of the NB Film Co-op since September 1998. But Un-officially I have been associated with the Film Co-op since May 1994.

I became involved with the NB Film Co-op while I was on a Job Exposure Placement. I was interested in film, video and television production/broadcasting and there weren’t two many places in Fredericton NB that you could find out information on these industries.

The only places at the time that had any kind of information or training in these fields were Cable 10 the local community television studio and the NB film Co-op. So, naturally I did my job exposure at both of these locations. Sadly there wasn’t as much going on in the film, video and television industry at that time and I had to put my dream of being a film, video and television producer/broadcaster aside and look for what others considered "A Real Job"  but I kept in touch with the people at the Film Co-op and once another opportunity came around I took it and signed up as a full fledged card carrying member and have been one ever since.

CAT: How has the Film Co-op changed over time from your observations?

COLIN: So many changes have occurred over the past 17 years that I’m not sure if I can do this question justice- suffice it to say that the Film

Co-op has grown bigger and stronger over the years and through the Film Co-op many people who wouldn’t have had a chance to work on films or make their own films have gotten a chance to prove themselves and to showcase the amazing talent that we have in this province. We will get there if we all work together.

CAT: You pour a lot of your time into the Film Co-op and some specific activities it does, why do you care so much?

COLIN: I like watching good people grow and succeed in life. Plus I also like to know that I’ve helped someone else achieve some of their life and career goals. I also like setting an example for others to follow. I believe in what the Film Co-op does and what it stands for and that is why I put so much time and effort into what I do at the Film Co-op.

Cat: To you, what makes the Film Co-op different from other organizations that you've been involved with and worthy of your longtime involvement?

COLIN: To me the amount of learning, training, experience and education that I have received from the Film Co-op makes it more appealing then some of the other organizations that I have been a part of. The camaraderie, compassion and caring that makes the Film Co-op what it is - a family of filmmakers.

CAT: What are some of your favorite memories over the years involving the Film Co-op?

COLIN: So many - so here are just a few:

- Making my first independent film - "Man in the Hollow" with the help of the Film Co-op members. You guys know who you are and you know I’ll never forget you.

- Just after my second film "Tales from the Coffee Shop" nearly ended my career in the independent film community, Cat suggested that I might like being a part of the Production Committee and she was right. So, thanks Cat for convincing me to stick around it’s been very interesting and inspiring.

- Working as a board Member.

- Helping Launch - "Under the stars"

- Helping launch - "The Monday night Film Series."

- Serving on every committee and advisory group that we have here at the Film Co-op. I have learned so much over the years and worked with so many incredible people.

- Working on the feature Film "They Didn’t Make It." Yes I know we had some tough, insane and difficult times but we still did what we set out to do and that is something we all can be proud of.

- Working on my action adventure film - "Temple of the Sapphire Moon." Couldn’t ask for a better crew and cast to work with- You guys will always have a special place in my heart.

- Attending every Silver Wave (Tidal Wave) Film Festival and getting to meet the producers, directors and wonderful actors who make the shorts so that we can showcase our talent pool.

- Meeting all the wonderful people who are part of the Film Co-op (you know who you are so pat yourself on the back.)

- Working with the awesome actors and directors who have made the Actors Helping Actors Group such a fun and fulfilling experience for me.

- Working with our long-time staff (Cat, Tony), our most recent part-time staff tech guru Michel Guitard and the past technical staff, Mike Cowie, Rodrigo Gutierrez Jon Collicott and others (You guys know who I’m talking about) and the board of directors all of these years.

- Making so many friends and new connections from all over the province through the parties, screenings and events that NB Film Co-op puts on.

MEMBER UPDATE - PETER EVANCHUCK

Producer/Director/cameraman Peter Evanchuck recording music tracks for his documentary THE DECLINE, FALL AND RISE OF PAYNE - a 30 min doc that traces the life of street poet Robert Payne over two winters 2010 and 2011.

This is called 'smartBUDGET' movie making, used to be called 'low' or 'no' budget moviemaking - as you can see my MACbook Pro 17" is on table with Lacie 1T remote HD - we screen a sequence - I babble about the 'feel' I'd like the sequence to invoke in the viewer then BROCK LEMINKSI and HEATHER MACDONALD would improvise on some of my suggestions - since they are very talented student musicians from UNB, then got it fast and furious. After only 3 hours we had laid all the music effects bed tracks and then worked on laying down some BACH they had already used in their final recitals for entry into advanced music studies at McGill - so they were happy with the money I paid them for 3 hours work - I was happy too since I got all my original and classical public domain music/music effects for my 30 min doc. - now that's 'fast and furious' moviemaking in the cowboy manner i.e. in the 'smartBUDGET' manner.  I used my CANON S1 and RODE shotgun to record both sound and image which is very easy to log and capture on FCPro - get rid of the image and only use sound where required - BINGO!!
