FILM INTERN AT THE NB FILM CO-OP

The Film Co-op was lucky enough recently to get a young emerging filmmaker/artist-in-residence onboard to assist Cat one day a week starting immediately. Thanks to a special government program and with no cost to the Film Co-op, Rebecca will join Tony, Cat and Michel at the co-op offices every Friday from December, 2010 - April 2011.  Rebecca comes highly recommended by Outreach Productions where she did an internship recently. Outreach is a Silver Wave Sponsor annually.

Rebecca Alaxendra Sharpe was born June 17, 1991 in Sussex New Brunswick. She resides in the small town of Chipman with her mother and younger brother. Growing up was a little tough, but she would see something as simple as a bird flying and her imagination would take over. She would dream about flying all over the world and being able to see the mysteries that intrigue her. Ever since she was little she had a love for life, adventure, and being one of a kind.

Among her many talents, she had grown up in a very artsy/musical family, and she was more than capable of picking those abilities up. She can create art on the computer, has had crash courses in painting by her grandmother, can design her own clothing line and is currently trying her hand at sketching. She had wanted to play guitar most of her life, and because she was determined, she worked to get it. It took her a very short amount of time to pick it up.

She was brought up to be a free thinker who could stand on her own, and be confident in making her own decisions. She has the kind of relationship with her mother you would only fathom in a television show, for example Gilmore Girls. This has made her a stronger more independent young lady knowing she has a great support system behind her.

Her mother noticed when she was young that she had this different talent of reciting the lines from movies she’d seen. She could create another plot entirely and use those lines. As she got older that had turned into something greater. Rebecca could see different ways to change the direction of a scene, line or the entire plot of a film to get the desired effect to capture the audience.

Rebecca has been determined to make her mark on the world ever since she can remember. She had a difficult time to recognize the path she wanted to take in life, and much to her dismay she had not been very successful finding her niche. She had been given the suggestion of ‘Actress’ from her mother in 2009 and it took off from there. She has rapidly made videos using her computer and pictures matched to fitting music. She opened a YouTube account so the world could see what she is capable of doing in the early stages of her life, and hopefully see the potential awaiting her, in her perpetual future career in film.

Some of her favourite films/directors include:

·Seven Pounds – Will Smith, Rosario Dawson

·Secret Life of Bees – Queen Latifa, Dakota Fanning, Alicia Keys

·Eclipse/30 Days of Night – David Slade (Director)

·Transformers – Michael Bay (Director)

And many, many more

She has interests in all aspects of film creation, from acting to directing, producing, filming, writing etc. She would prefer to cover all aspects of film creation because they all have a great impact on people all over the world. She is a driven young woman on a path to take the industry by storm, by putting her passion and determination into every project she takes on.

FILMMAKER TAKES AN ACTING WORKSHOP

As a new filmmaker, I’m keen to learn the ins and outs of the NB film community. I thought I knew quite a bit, viewing it from the outside, but I also knew I wanted a more intimate look.

With that in mind, I joined the NBFC in 2009. I was immediately impressed by the kind, positive, generous, and creative minds that make up the Co-op membership. Everyone was encouraging and happy to help me learn and work with other filmmakers on their projects.

As soon as Cat released the Fredericton/Moncton and Saint John schedules for the New Brunswick Filmmakers' Co-operative 2010 Workshop Program, I signed up for 10 workshops (check out the NBFC training link at: http://www.nbfilmcop.com/training.htm ). I was ready to absorb as much as I could directly from the people who knew what they were talking about.

When one of the workshop needed to be rescheduled, and I had a conflict with the new date, I searched for an alternative. I saw that Wally MacKinnon, an actor that I respected, would be instructing an acting workshop. The description stated he would cover the basic tools needed to become a working actor, from preparing for an audition, to techniques in acting, working in front of the camera, and the responsibilities of the actor.

The workshop was made up of seasoned actors as well as those who were trying to break in. Then there was me.

When I introduced myself, I explained that I had no desire to be either in front of the camera or on stage. But before I had a chance to take another breath I had to explain my motivations for joining them.

I told them I wanted to see what professional actors expected at auditions and film shoots, and that I was taking the workshop from the directors perspective. Someone suggested more directors should be taking acting classes. And I can see why.

Wally certainly knows his craft. Not only does he have an impressive resume, both on stage and film, but he explained it at a level that even I could understand.

We all had a chance to work in front of the camera in a mock audition. Everyone was patient and kind with my performance. I hope my takes don’t end up on YouTube.

Thank you Wally and workshop participants for allowing me to get a glimpse of your craft. It’s not an easy one.

This workshop give me a better appreciation for what an actor needs from a director. My film will be better for for taking Wally's class.

FETAL FILMS AND ROBOT COUSIN SOUNDWORKS TEAM UP TO ROCK THE RECESSION IN 2011!

The Great Recession of '08 calls up many colourful images; ashen, grey-suited hedge-fund managers fleeing AIG and Lehman Brothers like so many rats from a sinking ship; Red-faced right-wingers shouting "socialist!" in the faces of those who dared question the virtues of unbridled free-market capitalism; And of course, the sparkling, shiny bail-out greenbacks supposed to make it all just go away.

With such a rainbow-palette to draw from, Fetal Films (Photo of Chris Fulton to left by Jeff Crawford) (Chris Fulton and Josh Linton) and Robot Cousin Soundworks (Jordan Roherty) thought: "hey, why not set this hot mess to music?" And so a rock opera was borne...

"Bail-out! A Recessionary Rock Opera" - a unique musical film project in the history of NB indy film...

Fetal Films' past work - the Silver Wave Best NB Comedy Award-winning films "Gamers' Manifesto" and "Manic Chiropractic" - were films of modest ambition; few sets, a small crew, no pricey film-stock - films about slackers produced by slackers. So, to help them pull off the garish spectacle that is the modern musical, Fulton (Writer/Director/Co-producer), Linton (Lead Actor/Co-producer) and Roherty (Composer/Co-producer) are calling on some of the usual suspects to lend them a hand. From Moncton, Danny Thebeau on Camera, from Fredericton, Jen Chiasson rocking the Editing Suite, with other frequent collaborators having their numbers called soon. In addition to the familiar, Fulton and Linton will be rounding out the group with song and dance professionals, including a much-needed choreographer to harness and channel Linton's raw, natural rhythm into a mainstream dance-style.

The Fetal Film folks are trying (Josh Linton to right)  to bring something unique to the NB indy film scene, but will need support from the NB film community at large - we hope to feed off of your enthusiasm to push us through the process and hold us accountable to you, the NB film fans.

Regular updates will be posted on the e-news feed. Will be holding auditions in the months to come, so look for alerts in the e-news and on Facebook.

Anyone interested in dropping a line of encouragement, or for more info, you can reach Chris and Josh of Fetal Films at:

Thanks!
Chris, on behalf of Josh and Jordan.
