NB JOY JURY FOR SWFF 09
Gia Milani, and her producer / husband Tony Whalen, are extremely excited to premiere their new short film, A Dark Radius, at the Silver Wave Film Festival on November 7th, 2009 in Fredericton. The film won the CBC 3.2.1 Award last year. Tony and Gia own Shore Road Pictures Inc.
Semra N. Yüksel has been making social and historical documentary films for the last 20 years.
Semra has recently been working on a several hard hitting documentaries
It Was the Dance - A multifaceted future length documentary reveals the social, economic, cultural and class struggle of a young couple- a black Canadian soldier and his Viennese Jewish war bride. The film will portray the history of Blacks in Canada and Jews on Europe; ugliness of the war and its affects on human beings. Despite the deep-rooted social norms, values and taboos, they marry each other and move to Canada. An unusual story full of courage, challenge, sorrow and finding strength to continue life in 1940’s Canada.
Blue Sky and Orange Labels - A long term project that is about the affect of dioxin use at the CFB Gagetown. For the last four years interviewing and filming the victims, experts, politicians, military and civilian parties. Documenting as the contemporary events occurring around it
Natural Targets - Scores of boys sexually abused at a government training school in Fredericton, New Brunswick. When the boys made official complain nothing was done for them. This one-hour documentary will speak of the social and economic injustice, social values, bureaucracy, cover-ups, abuse of power and the negligence of the establishment; along with a few honest people=s up hill struggle to fight against the system.
Christine McLean is back from a rewarding year in New York City studying in the Masters program at Columbia University's highly esteemed school of journalism. She was awarded an MA in the arts and culture concentration. In the spring she did a return stint as the New Brunswick panelist on CBC television's Short Film Face-Off. She has now moved to Fredericton where she is teaching television as well as media writing as a full-time faculty member of the St. Thomas University journalism program. She is looking forward to serving on the NB Joy Award Jury for this year's Silver Wave Film Festival.

Your CBC Host for Fredericton: A Cultural Capital Film Showcase
Genevieve Tomney
Genevieve received her Bachelor of Journalism from Ryerson University and began her journalism career with the CBC as a Joan Donaldson Award winner in 2007.
After working with CBC Newsworld in Toronto and as a reporter for CBC Vancouver, Genevieve moved back to the area where she grew up, Saint John, to join the CBC New Brunswick news team.
As a reporter, and now the Co-host of CBC News: Maritimes at 5:30, Genevieve has enjoyed traveling the province to find and tell the stories that matter most to the people who live in our region.
Genevieve has also worked for print and online media at the Canadian Press and AOL Canada, but has found her home in broadcasting.
“There’s such an amazing feeling when you turn on the television or radio and you hear a story…and it feels like the reporter or the host is speaking directly to you…just telling you that story…that’s the connection you have to strive to make every day.”

Saint John Film to Premiere at SWFF
Poverty, education, healthcare, family violence. These issues are, on average, of greater concern to women than men, not just in Canada, but in the USA and UK. Childcare, pay equity and violence against women are of much greater concern to women. But because our type of democracy favours those already in power -- in this case, men -- our government doesn't emphasize these issues as much as the majority – women -- would like.
I've finally finished 2.5 years of working part-time on a documentary that probes deeply into one of the biggest problems with society – lack of women political leaders. I'm thrilled that the world premiere of "Menocracy" is screening this Saturday, Nov 7, at the Charlotte St Arts Centre, hosted by SWFF. It's 1 h, 22 minutes long. $5, tickets at the door.
None of the broadcasters thought that my pitch sounded like a tv documentary, so I had to produce this on my own. I didn't have a choice in making it. The spirit of my great-aunt, Gert Harding of Welsford, NB, has been haunting me for decades about the dearth of elected women.
In 1913, at age 23, Gert joined the most radical group of women ever to fight for a woman's cause, the Militant Suffragettes of Great Britain. They risked their jobs, health, social standing and family approval all to fight for the female vote. We got it in 1918. And now, 90 years later? We women of NB have all of 15% of the legislature. In Ottawa, women MPs number 22%. And people of colour? Why doesn't our democracy reflect our society?
Learn why not at Saturday's screening. Hear what Rt Hon Kim Campbell, the only woman to be head of government in North America, and top Political Scientists in Canada, the US and UK have to say about how to fix the problem. There are two simple solutions, and it's high time we women demand the changes to make our menocracy into a true democracy. Most of the rest of the democratic world made the changes long ago.
Soon to be distributed across Canada by the Canadian Learning Co.
