Gretchen will ask the questions that writers too often don’t have the chance to ask: What opportunities are there to develop screenwriting skills? What can a writer do to improve the chances of their work being produced?

What do producers look for in a writer beyond just a good idea? Is it possible for a writer to apply for development $ to write a script? When should a writer link up with a producer? When should a writer work with a story editor? How do you get your script to a producer? Can a writer approach a Broadcaster with an idea? When should a writer pitch their idea? What elements should a writer bring with them to pitch their idea?

Come join us in this lively interactive discussion during the Silver Wave Film Festival in Fredericton. For more information please contact Pamela Lovelace, creativepam@gmail.com or visit www.wift-at.com

For three years running, Louise has coordinated and managed the PEI Screenwriters' Bootcamp that to date has offered forty-four emerging writers from Atlantic Canada the opportunity to develop their skills as screenwriters and learn about the industry. The Screenwriters' Bootcamp is a week-long retreat style workshop that has attracted mentors such as Tom Shoebridge founder of the Canadian Screen Training Centre; Alex Epstein, television producer and author of writing guides for both film and television; and Jennifer Podemski, actor, screenwriter, and producer for Redcloud Studios Inc.

NBFC PRODUCTION UPDATES

Donovan here from Moncton, just wanted to give a little update on my Short Film Venture historical drama entitled: "Délivrance" (in french) not to be confused with the English film of the similar title: :Deliverance".

The filming of this production went very well! The site of Fort Beausejour was just perfect for us, we were able to shoot almost everything on location and we made the best use of the location that we could. The footage looks incredible. I have received some pictures from my stills photographers and I am going to post them on my facebook and more on my film website (http://www.redleafproductions.com) this week.

We completed the whole production on Saturday evening, October the 24th at the Fort Beausejour location and on Sunday October 25th we shot the final scenes at Centennial park and in Hilsborough, my favorite location where I shot 2 other films (thanks to the gracious and accommodating land owner of Hillsborough location, Christian Theriault) .

We had a great crew and superb cast! Dieppe NBFC member Danny Thebeau, my writer and main actor for the film was the best asset for me to have. He was on hand to help with the film at every step of the way from conception, pre production and of course during the whole production (he's still not off the hook, with post production on the way). Saint John NBFC member Jeremy Robinson, my DOP, has a great eye and was able to come up with some good creative ways to shoot several scenes we needed in a pinch! Saint John NBFC member Tim O'Neil was there to help in pre-production, which helped me shape and organize this whole project and Fredericton, NBFC member Britanny Sparrow, our wonderful 1st Assistant Director, kept everything going every step of the way on the days we were shooting!

Our unsung heroes the grips, NBFC members Ralph Pritchard (Shediac), Dennis Poirier and Rob Gemmel, both from Fredericton who were multitasking as either cast (Ralph and Dennis) or sound man (Rob) were crucial to this shoot as they were always there to help and set-up lights and we did need a lot of setups once we were in the bunkers. My Production Designer, PEI NBFC member Jonathon Driscoll did an incredible job of gathering props, set decorations and setting up each scene for us. He did his homework and surpassed my expectations!

My stills photographer James Lawrence was always around to take come candid shots and my Continuity Stills/Tech Fredericton NBFC member Andrew Long was also very proactive and not only was he getting all the continuity photography we needed but he would anticipate certain problematic issues and would handle them without us even knowing (taking out modern signs, hiding cables, etc). Moncton based NBFC member Denis Sweet was always making sure that I was aware of any continuity issues and script lines flubbed or not uttered in a scene. Thanks also to my special FX makeup man who had a broken leg and still came to help out, waddling around in his cast! You can't say dedication without thinking of Brian Neil! Lastly but not the least in my crew, Moncton, NBFC member Ray Michaud, who was always the happy go lucky person who found the right thing to say and was always there to help! I can keep on going but needless to say all my crew was amazing and my cast and extras did a superb job with this script!

Finally, I was very fortunate to be on the set the first weekend and a CBC reporter Vanessa Blanch came to bring her children to visit the site and she discovered that we were shooting a film there. So I was then approached to do an interview and on top of the interview for CBC news I also had a second interview with the evening show with Paul Castle on CBC called Shift, Friday October 23rd. Yes I have to say that I was a bit nervous for the live interview, but I am happy I was able to not fumble too much! Happy to have been able to get on air with CBC to help promote this short film which is certainly going to be an interesting film next year and I hope to submit it to Silver Wave 2010! thank you again to everyone who helped and supported me.

I would also like to personally thank the Short Film Venture Program, which possible through a partnership between NB Film and the New Brunswick Filmmakers'
Co-operative. I could not have made this film without their support, and the additional sponsors who help out each year on this program open to all English and French Filmmakers in NB.

Donovan Richard, Short Film Venture Award Winner, Moncton, NB

--------------------------------------------------------------

Local veteran Photographer and Video Producer Rick Davis, has recently announced a joint partnership with Canada (East) Films Inc. of New Brunswick (Co-op member) , for the co-production of a 90 minute made for TV motion picture set in 1783, and detailing the building of the Town of Port Roseway (Shelburne), and the hardships and strife encountered by the displaced Settlers, Freed Blacks and Loyalists at the end of the American Revolutionary War.
"The Town of Shelburne went from two people to 11,000 people literally overnight." says Davis. "Within days, the area was transformed from a wooded shoreline to a town, laid out and cleared with hands which were ill suited or experienced for the task."
Screenplay and Direction will be carried out by Davis, based on true accounts of the events and people of the time. Canada (East) Films, headed by Stephen McKinnon, will also assist in the writing and direction of the film, in addition to providing production services. Filming is expected to span 3 - 4 months, with the vast majority being shot in the Shelburne area.
"We have had a number of film companies shooting in the area over the years, always trying to make it look like somewhere else." says Davis. "This is an opportunity to tell our own story, which probably has more significance than all of the films shot here put together. We have the people, we have the location, and we have the story."
The team is currently in negotiations with National Broadcast Networks for distribution and financing.
