SAINT JOHN SHORT FILM VENTURE FILM TO AIR ON CBC

Saint John filmmaker Michael McDonald's short film 'Hunting Lessons' will air on CBC Television's new program Short Film Face Off.

Michael made the film in 2004 with money from the NB Film Short Film Venture program  (NB Film and New Brunswick Filmmakers' Co-operative supported) and it debuted at the Atlantic Film Festival in 2005. It won the Viewer's Choice Award at Continental Drift and was Runner Up in the Comedy Category at Silver Wave in the same year.

'Hunting Lessons' is one of only 12 films chosen to air in CBC's new venture, which will play three films per episode for a panel of judges, who then choose one to go forward to the final episode where the films will then be voted on by the viewing audience.

The first episode of Short Film Face Off will be broadcast on April 16, just before the Stanley Cup Play Offs. Michael's film will appear in the second episode.

CINEMATOGRAPHY FOR FILM PRODUCTION
Intro - Theory
April 12, Saturday 11 am - 5 pm
Instructor: Jonathan Collicott
Location: New Brunswick Film Co-op
(732 Charlotte Street, Fredericton)
Charlotte Street Arts Centre
Fee: $20 for Film Co-op Members
$30 for Non-Members

Only 2 spaces left!

(Required Workshop for members who want to direct/produce their own ‘film’ projects through NB Film Co-op)

The Director of Photography (D.O.P.) works closely with the Director and Production Designer to achieve a uniform vision for the film. The D.O.P. brings the story to life on film by working with light, lens and film stock.

This theory course will discuss the artistic and technical expertise needed to film and light a dramatic film.

INSTRUCTOR'S BIOGRAPHY
Jonathan Collicott is a graduate of the Woodstock Video and Television Program and has worked in the industry and independent sector as a researcher, writer and technical person for years.

Jonathan is a director/writer/producer on his own creative projects and received grants to produce his most recent project, “Song for the Homefront”. He also recently finished a documentary he directed on New Brunswick artist Anthony Flower, which is scheduled to air on BRAVO.

PRODUCTION DESIGN FOR FILM -
THEORY AND PRACTICE

Intermediate - Theory & Hands-on
April 13, Sunday, 11 am - 5 pm
Location: New Brunswick Film Co-op
(732 Charlotte Street, Fredericton)
Charlotte Street Arts Centre
Fee: $20 for Film Co-op Members
$30 for Non-Members

Only 1 space left!

The Production Designer conceives and creates the overall look, mood and style of the film, working in close conjunction with the Director and the DOP. Many elements are involved; one gets to play God, in fact, creating a world in which the film will take place. This can mean adapting existing locations to ones purpose, or creating new ones from scratch.

Costume design will also be considered as a vital element in creating character for the actor, and for audiences' understanding of the character.

The first half of the workshop studies the work of past and present Production Designers, using examples of their work in many differing styles, depending on the possibilities and requirements of the film. The second half will investigate the stages of practical preparation and production on a film, dealing with restrictions of money, time and resources, which so often occur in low to no-budget productions.

With proper preparation, planning, research, resourcefulness and creativity, much can be done even on a limited budget. And remember: it may be hard work but it's also a whole lot of fun! (Some may not necessarily subscribe to this view).

INSTRUCTOR'S BIOGRAPHY
Glendon McKinney studied film at York University. As well as writing and directing his own works, Glendon has worked as a production and/or costume designer on numerous independent productions including Tim McDonough's "The Strings Attached" and Jon Collicotts' WW II story, "A Song for the Homefront", for which he received the award for Best Achievement in Art Direction at the 2007 Silver Wave Film Festival. His film, "They Only Come Out at Night", won the Best Short Drama award at the 2005 Silver Wave Film Festival. His short film, "We Two Boys Together Clinging", was commissioned by and streamed online by the Struts Gallery in Sackville. He also teaches film history and aesthetics at the Digital Arts College.Glendon hopes someday to live amongst the depraved luxury of Von Sternbergs' "The Shanghai Gesture".

PROMOTING YOUR FILMS ON THE WEB
April 15, Tuesday, 7 pm - 11 pm
Instructor: Chafic Haddad
Location: New Brunswick Film Co-op
(732 Charlotte Street, Fredericton)
Charlotte Street Arts Centre
Fee: $15 for Film Co-op Members
$25 for Non-Members

Number Limit: 8

You've uploaded your film's trailer on youtube, now what? Social Networking, new media and web 2.0 are terms that are becoming more and more popular as filmmakers have embraced the internet as their platform for promoting their films.

Find out how to take advantage of these concepts and tools to virally put your film out there. This workshop demonstrates many free web tools for film makers who want to use the internet to create, edit, distribute films and even make money! Tools that will be discussed include blogging, Celtx, Revver, Pownce, Facebook and many more.

INSTRUCTOR'S BIOGRAPHY
Chafic has been a member of the NB Film Co-op since 2006 and has worked in various crew positions on 4 shoots. He made his acting debut on Joel Thompson's "They Didn't Make It" and shortly after landed a lead role on Colin Smart's "Temple of the Saphire Moon". Chafic is currently preparing to direct and produce his first short film. After attending a new media workshop hosted by Chris Campbell in 2006, Chafic began researching how new media has impacted "old media" and has followed many trends in self publishing short films and videos.

Currently Chafic is promoting open source technologies and is attempting to help create an online community of artists who promote Creative Commons ideals as well as information sharing within the Fredericton area.

Chafic currently works as a researcher and systems administrator for FOG Studios and is part owner of Civic Fidelity: http://www.ci-fi.net

The Festival takes place August 14-21 in Montreal, and our submission deadline is April 30th. If any of your members are eligible or if you know of any film makers that would be interested feel free to pass on the information about our Film Festival.

Our application form and submission poster are attached.

*****

In addition to the Film Festival, we work to find ways to promote short films by young film makers. As part of that mandate, we are presently producing short documentaries shot in HD by young Canadian film makers to air on prime-time TV for High Fidelity HDTV's group of channels: Equator, Rush, Oasis & Treasure HD.

If you know of any film makers who would be interested in that opportunity or who might have footage that could be repurposed for this, feel free to point them in my direction.
