NEW SUSSEX MEMBER ELIZABETH STEVENS
Elizabeth Stevens was born in Canal, New Brunswick, grew up in Saint John, and moved to Halifax where she became interested in the theatre, first at the Theatre Arts Guild, then as production secretary at Neptune Theatre.
She graduated from Dalhousie’s Theatre program but got side tracked and went into journalism. When she got tired of telling other people’s stories, came “home” and joined UNB’s English Department where she completed an M.A. in Creative Writing.
She has worked on several movies in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick including Baby as a stand-in for Jean Stapleton, and in Dolores Clayborne as a stand-in for Judy Parfitt, as well as in smaller roles/extra in other films.
In New Brunswick, she has had principal roles in In Her Defense , also in the Daring and Grace television series (as a villain), was the Voice of the Crone in Film Co-op member Jon Collicott's half-hour film Pale Blue Glass and had a role in Film Co-op member Tony Sekulich's short film Caught Looking . She also appeared in smaller roles in Geraldine’s Fortune , Jericho Mansion s, and Citizens’s Verdict .
She has recently returned from teaching in China and Saudi Arabia, and currently teaches part time at UNB (Fred.) English Department.
She lives in Sussex, N.B., and looks forward to working in live theatre and in films in this Province, and being part of the “film community.”

NEW OROMOCTO MEMBER ALANA MATHESON
I was born in Ottawa, but moved around a lot (military brat). I now call Oromocto, NB home.
I have been looking at past Film Co-op e-news archives for ideas and noticed that everybody seems so talented and has so many projects under their belts! Besides a theatre arts class I took, I guess everyone has to start somewhere, and I’m so happy to have the chance to start at the Film Co-op. Everybody has been so nice and have made me feel so at ease. This is a new adventure for me, scary and exciting.
I have learned so much at the workshops I have taken so far, and am looking forward to many more. So, the next time I get to write something for the e-news, I’ll have much more to say!

NEW FREDERICTON MEMBER SCOTT VEYSEY
Scott Veysey is a New Brunswick filmmaker fueled by pizza, beer, and videotape.
In recent years, Scott has captured some of the most controversial images ever put to film in this province. After gallivanting around Europe forever and a day, Scott decided to take a break from the backpack and pursue his passion for film while he's still young and good-looking.
Scott now lives in Fredericton with local music act, Rusted Dawn, and is enrolled in digital filmmaking at the Centre for Arts and Technology. He plans to shoot a series of short films this summer and has a feature-length documentary set to premiere in the fall. Scott looks forward to working with his fellow Maritimers in an attempt to make New Brunswick the next Hollywood.

CO-OP MEMBER UPDATE - IDA ORENBACH
I’m heading to London and Ireland on Friday, and thought I should give you the news and the "olds" before I go.
Last April, along with Film Co-op member Dennis Poirier and fellow actor Stéphan Hamel, I was in the cast of Visa pour l’éternité, a play staged by Fredericton’s own Fous de la scène. We played two nights to wonderful audiences and then took the show to Neguac for the Festival de theatre communautaire en Acadie (FTCA), where we just about swept the awards (5 out of the 8 we were eligible for).
Of the seven troupes participating, Les Fous de la scène took home the hardware for:
Best production (Visa pour l’éternité);
Best direction (Daniel Lessard);
Best technical design (Daniel Lessard & Stéphane Niles);
Best set design (Daniel Lessard, Stéphane Niles & cast, including Co-op member Dwayne Stoddard); and
Best supporting actress (Rebekah Chassé);
and earned two of the three nominations for best actor in a supporting role (Stéphan Hamel and Maxime Fournier). It was like a night at the Oscars, and we were all hoarse the next day from screaming. Just a fantastic experience.
This year, the troupe is staging Coup sur Coup, an adaptation of Ray Cooney’s Out of Order. Dennis and Stéphan are back in the cast. The play opened last Saturday and the curtain rises again this Saturday, April 26, at 8:00 p.m. at the Centre communautaire Sainte-Anne. It’s well worth the $10 ticket. It’s a farce, so if you understand some French, you’ll get the rest of the story through the physicality. As always, les Fous do a great job. Two of the cast members (I won’t say which ones) are masters of their characters.
In February, I had another chance to tread the boards, this time as a member of Kathy Van Genne’s and Erika Nason’s production of The Vagina Monologues. Truly a hilarious, eye-opening, and emotional experience, both for the cast and the audience. (R-E-S-P-E-C-T! Find out what it means to me!)
I’m looking forward to working on Blindsided this summer with Film Co-op member Chaf and the gang. When next you hear from me, it may be from the deck of Henry VIII’s ship, the Mary Rose.
Toodles,
Fredericton Film Co-op member Ida Orenbach

CO-OP MEMBER'S DOCUMENTARY TO AIR ON CBC
Connell Smith and Peter Atkinson's social documentary How I Got Buste d has been licensed for television. It will air this coming Thursday at 7:00 PM on CBC. The event follows well over three years of work from development through post-production. Busted received development support from NBFilm and CBC Television. The shoot and edit were funded by the producers with generous support from many people within the New Brunswick film community.
The documentary has an amazing soundtrack by Harvey's Darrell Grant. Brian Chisholm of Saint John is DOP, Christine McLean of Moncton gave us hands-on support and acted as consulting director. Norean Goldston and Don Flatt intervened at key moments to save the edit. Many thanks also to Cathie and Tony at the Co-op for their time and advice.
Enjoy the show!

FILM CO-OP ACTIVITY UPDATES: The NB Film Co-op's first ever "Experimental Film Programme" has completed its first run!
by Michelle Lovegrove Thomson
The programme was divided into two sections. In the Fall, participants met with the Co-ordinator for a monthly session on experimental film, practices, and screenings. For the Winter term we opened up the program to all members and the public for a series of screenings and Visiting Filmmaker Lectures.
Our first event was January 11th's well-attended screening of Experimental Canadian Shorts, rented from the CFMDC and curated by the Co-ordinator. Next up was visiting filmmaker Barbara Sternberg on January 19th. A well-established film-based filmmaker, Sternberg has strong ties to NB as co-founder of Sackville's Struts Gallery. Her lecture and screening focused on film as a medium, and various techniques one can use to manipulate the filmic image to capture the experience of time, memory, and the body.
Halifax-based director Andrea Dorfman joined us February 9th for a workshop on storytelling in film. Dorfman's main focus was to show that all film, whether "experimental" or not, contains a narrative and tells a story. She encouraged participants to mine their own lives for stories and moments worth revisiting and sharing.
For our final event R. Bruce Elder screened a selection of his work. Elder is a renowned filmmaker in N. America, and was a recipient of the Governor-General's Award for Visual Arts in 2007. His lecture, somehow both highly cerebral and totally aesthetic, took place on March 27th at Marshall D'avary Hall on the UNB Campus. Elder's work deals with transformation of the Self through Art, and the literal transformation of images through chemical and digital processes. His lecture connected the dots between the Renaissance obsession with the harmony of the Heavenly Spheres, to the pursuit of harmony and thus divinity as a creative principle behind Renaissance maths and arts, to how he makes use of both math and chance in the making of his own alchemical works. Whew.
Thanks to all those who attended these events! It was a pleasure to oversee this first attempt at bringing a concentrated selection of experimental works and artists to the Film Co-op, and I hope everyone gained some creative inspiration from the series.

FREDERICTON - GALLERY CONNEXION IS PLEASED TO PRESENT: Pinhole Photography and The Camera Obscura
A Workshop By Drew Gilbert
When: Sunday, April 27, from 10am to 4pm on Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day
Cost: $15/ $10 for Connexion Members and NBCCD Students plus one roll of film
What is the Worldwide Pinhole Photography day?
This is an international event created to promote and celebrate the art of pinhole photography.
On this unique day, we encourage people throughout the world
to take some time off from the increasingly technological world we live in and to participate in the simple act of making a pinhole photograph. to share their visions and help spread the unusual beauty of this historical photographic process. Why Pinhole Photography?
A unique personal experience! Pinhole photography allows you to make a photograph that requires only a light-tight container (box, can,...) with a tiny hole in one side (as a camera) and any photo-sensitive surface in it. You can adapt an existing camera, or make the camera yourself .
The experience of image-making becomes a little more special when created with your own hand-made camera; so, we provide different instructions in making your camera on our Support page. With your own camera, infinite depth-of-field, skewed perspectives, and slower exposures, you may ultimately become more creative and more selective about what you choose to photograph. Magical things happen in pinhole photography...

We want to encourage filmmakers at all levels - become a member, upload your film, share it with the country.
We have contests! Our unique Contests will challenge your filmmaking skills and inspire your creative vision.
Opening May 1, "It's Hilarious" is a contest for the funniest film.
It'll be judged by Canadian comedy icons including Tommy Chong and Ron James. The winner gets $10,000 cash, screening at the Just for Laughs Comedia Film Festival (it takes place in Montreal, July 10 - 20, 2008) and the chance to be broadcast on Super Channel.
Upload your film and invite your friends to rate it on SuperU.ca. The highest rated films will be judged for the grand prize. Check back often - more contests will be announced soon.
You can also upload scripts and scores. Start your filmmaking blog. Post your reel for others to view. Soon we'll have new areas including resources for filmmakers, schoolhouse, events and more.
We're looking forward to seeing your films, reading your scripts and listening to your music!
