Spotlight!

IN MEMORY

ERROL WILLIAMS SPECIAL SCREENING EVENT & RECEPTION

56 year old NB Film Co-op Alumnus Errol Williams passed away suddenly on Saturday evening in a hospital in Bermuda in July, 2007.

Errol was a huge supporter and contributor to the NB Film Co-op. As a long time member filmmaker he remained involved in the organization throughout the years whether he was living in Fredericton, Halifax or Bermuda.

(by Chris Campbell, past Film Co-op President)

Just over a year ago we lost our friend Errol.

Anyone who knew Errol remembers his smile, his laugh, his keen intellect and endless curiosity. He loved to tell stories and to listen to them. In his travels he made many friends and through filmmaking he was able to share more stories and give many people chances to grow as filmmakers. Errol had a powerful and lasting impact on the NB Filmmakers' Co-op as a mentor and a friend. From his short film "Driftwood" to the documentary "Echoes in the Rink: The Willie O'Ree Story" he developed as a filmmaker and the Co-op grew with him. During the production of "Echoes in the Rink" the Co-op expanded in membership, production and professionalism.

Many people were drawn to filmmaking and helped by Errol through his patience and generosity. While he worked in Bermuda and Nova Scotia, he maintained his friendships and connections with the Co-op over the years and regularly attended the Silver Wave Film Festival.

Errol's final visit to the Film Co-op was during Silver Wave in November of 2006 where he was able to see many friends and share stories and laughter.

On Saturday, August 23 at 7pm at Marshall D'Avray Hall, UNB Room 143 (Dugald Blue Auditorium) , Fredericton, NB, The NB Film Co-op and Errol's mom and family will show some of Errol's films and share some memories, stories and laughter in a casual environment with a reception afterwards.

He still inspires us and brings us together.

STEPHEN MACKINNON - HIS ACTORS ENJOYED HIS PRODUCTION

Being actors involved in the making of "Spirit Cove" has been a great experience. The movie depicts the life and times of the Acadians and Natives in the 18th century in New Brunswick. Part of the film was shot at the Village Historique Acadien in Caraquet,  New Brunswick. We shot some scenes in the oldest Acadian house in New Brunswick. We also had the chance to meet and have meals with the residents of the Acadian Village. Not only did we eat the Acadian meals, we also wore the traditional clothing including wooden shoes (which were surprisingly comfortable)

The producers of this film, 3RB production based in Miramichi (One of them is Film Co-op member Stephen McKinnon), have been very "hands-on", ready to answer any questions and work with the actors. Jimmy MacKinley (Silver Wave Award Winner for Best NB Actor) is a very dedicated director, who had his funny moments along with the crew and actors, while the film was rolling.

Needless to say we have a few bloopers just waiting to be uncovered. The movie will air on television in 2009, for more information visit www.3rb.ca

PAUL ANGERS - IT'S A WRAP FOR ASK UG!

It's been an interesting journey for me. I made my directorial debut with the short short  Ask Ug recently. I was a bit overwhelmed for the most part but the crew made it seem so workable. I know I am now convinced that it's always going to be this fun.

I can't thank everyone on my crew enough for all their hard work & dedication to this project. Everybody's energy was contagious during the three shooting days & I felt magic during the actor's performances. I believe that this was as a result of your energy throughout the whole process. You are definitely a dream team.

Dennis Poirier (UG), thank you for believing in the project & helping me get it going. Once the crew left and we were done, I could feel a huge emptiness in the house & in my heart. To the actors, I want to thank you for taking on the roles you were given & making imaginary characters come to life beyond my wildest expectations.

I'm happy I'm not doing the picture editing. It is going to be a lot of work as editing always is.

Again, I will be more than happy to return the favor for any upcoming projects my crew has.

Cheers,

Paul Angers

This year, we are celebrating our 8th year with some new programming approaches and again we’ve waived the submission fee for filmmakers submitting so, it promises to be a good year. Save the dates and plan to attend!

NEW BRUNSWICK - CALL FOR ARTWORK

THE FUTURE OF PEACE

March 6 to April 9, 2009
UNB Art Centre
Memorial Hall, University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, NB

Opening: International Women’s Day, March 8, 2009

You are invited to submit work to The Future of Peace, an exhibit of original art by New Brunswick women co-sponsored by the Fredericton Voice of Women for Peace and the UNB Art Centre. This exhibition will be shown in conjunction with the exhibit, Building Peace, Making History: 100 Years of Women’s Peace-Building in Canada. Presented by the Canadian Voice of Women for Peace, this bi-lingual traveling exhibition features archival photographs that reveal the courageous struggle of Canadian women for peace in the last century.

As a counterpoint to this historical perspective we are inviting artists to challenge the assumption that violence, even war, is sometimes necessary to achieve freedom, equality, fairness, and opportunity for women. We tend to think of war and peace as opposites, but are they? We know there have been
wars; has there ever been peace? Much of the violence we associate with war also exists within societies that are legally at peace. Is building a society in which women need not fear for themselves and their children possible without putting an end to war?

Please submit electronic link or DVD with minimum 3, maximum 10 images of original art. Include title, date, size and medium.

In addition, submit current CV and a brief statement about the proposed work and how it relates to your artistic practice and the theme of this exhibit.

Deadline for submission of image/resume package is January 31, 2009. Selection of artworks for the exhibit will be at the discretion of a jury.

Work must be framed/mounted, ready for display.

Artists will receive CARFAC recommended fee of $125 per artwork. Works are insured while on premises.

Works can be delivered to the UNB Art Centre (Memorial Hall, 9 Bailey Drive, Fredericton) by Monday, February 23, 2009. Work can be picked up by April 17, 2009.

SAINT JOHN - FIRST RETRO 80'S FESTIVAL

There has been a big buzz about Saint John's first retro 80's festival coming to town Aug. 21-23 on Rothesay Ave . The biggest festival under the big tent is called "Pop Goes The City" and It's an opportunity to dig deep in your closet to find those painted on jeans, skinny ties and super size bottle of hair spray and enjoy a unique and exciting event where bands you have not seen since university or high school will be making a special appearance in our fair port city. To really experience this weekend you need to dress in the aforementioned 80's attire unless your style has not changed since then and hopefully you have coiffed the perfect mullet for the occasion, although I heard mullets may be on sale on site. Sweet!

It promises to be a fun filled weekend with over a dozen bands under the big tent with headliners; PEI's Haywire, Montreal's The Box, Toronto's Blue Peter and New Romantic Canadian Icon's The Spoons who also hail from Toronto. Along with all the great live music there will a giant 80's video Dance party, BBQ pits, beer garden and a few other surprises. Avoid disappointment now and gather up your friends to relive the decade of decadence. It will be some good ol' fashioned fun. It Make's you feel like dusting off some of those old vinyl records doesn't it? For Tickets call 634-3183 or you can also get complete ticket, artist and scheduling information at www.popgoesthecity.com To quote Loverboy "Turn Me Loose"! MAJOR UPSET FOR INDEPENDENT PRODUCERS - CANADIAN HERITAGE'S CONTRIBUTION TO CIFVF WILL NOT BE EXTENDED!

ABOUT THE CANADIAN INDEPENDENT FILM & VIDEO FUND (CIFVF)
The Canadian Independent Film & Video Fund (CIFVF) is a dynamic private sector funding body which supports non-theatrical film, videos and new media projects created by Canadian independent producers to enable lifelong learning.

There are other government-funded organizations that assist the film and television industry, but none that plays exactly the same role as the Fund. The CIFVF is unique in focusing on the non-theatrical market. A broadcast licence is not required in order to apply to the CIFVF for funding: this is an extremely important factor for first time producers. The CIFVF assists projects that have been unable to attain the required level of broadcast licence fees to be eligible for Canadian Television Fund (CTF) or Telefilm funding.

The CIFVF provides financial assistance to independent producers for the development and production of English and French language films or videos and interactive digital new media programs in a variety of subject areas using the formats of documentary, docu-drama, drama and animation to inform, educate and/or instruct.

PROGRAMS AND SERVICES
Since 1991, the Canadian Independent Film and Video Fund has reviewed over 3,600 applications and provided $17.9 million to 900 independent Canadian productions, many of which have won awards in Canada and overseas.

Applications for funding are accepted at normally two specified deadlines only each year. However, for 2008, there will only be one deadline date.

The CIFVF also prepares briefs to government and to regulatory agencies such as the CRTC on behalf of the producers who work in the educational/informational program production sector.

BACKGROUND
In 1988, the Department of Communications (now called Canadian Heritage) established a $10 million program to assist the non-theatrical sector of the film and television industry, called the Canadian Non-Theatrical Film and Video Fund. In 1991, the government cancelled the program due to budget cuts, but a strong lobby from the industry persuaded the government to find funds to re-establish the program. As part of its privatization thrust, the decision was made by the government to set up a new, private sector fund that would eventually become self-financing.

The Canadian Independent Film and Video Fund was incorporated in August, 1991 as a national, non-profit organization.

FREDERICTON - MODELS NEEDED - PAID WORK

Needed two models: one male, one female, either side of 35. Must be in good shape (but not just out of the gym shape) for cover shot for NB government's French tourism guide. Shot is of a couple sitting on beach, looking out at the ocean as a kite surfer flies by.
I would prefer models that are either in the Miscou area, or can ride with me to the shoot from Fredericton, or can be picked up on route to Miscou.

Shot is for near the end of August or early September and would require one or two hours in the evening and then a morning shot and an afternoon one before wrapping. Pay is $250 plus expenses such as food and lodging. This is a still shot so no dialogue lines are necessary.

Please send your head shots and resumes to Cat at info@nbfilmcoop.com and she will pass on your info to the photographer!
