Spotlight!
AS SEEN FROM HERE
By Jim Lavoie
Kudos to the cast and crew of Bunthivy Nou's "A Lions Tale" being named an official selection of the Route 66 Film Festival in Springfield, Illinois, Sept 20-21 2008. The short film is competing in the Audience Favorite Debut Film category. The film was also recently submitted to the NB Silver Wave Film Festival (Nov 13-16). The film stars Sarah Ketcheson, Wally MacKinnon and Xavier Gould.
Principal shooting was on the slate Tuesday night at the Cavern (aka CHSR) as Paul Angers made his directorial debut in the short comedy, "Ask Ug."
The Film starred Dennis Poirier who cleanly chiseled out his UG persona on film. Denis' UG character has an uncanny resemblance to a Mr. Fred Flintstone of yesteryears. Director of Photography Michel Guitard said, "Shooting using torch light is tricky and the winds must be calm but I think what we have is rock solid." Barring any rockslide incidents, construction of this project will wrap this weekend. Of special note was the cameo appearance of rock dj Greg Gilbert who played himself to perfection.
Halifax based actor Whitney Illsley (star of Joel Thompson's Waiting for Myra), formerly of Fredericton, tells me she is up for the lead in an indie feature film this fall. She will be playing the role of a female superhero. "Wonder Whitney" sounds great to me.

HOLD THE PRESS! - NEW FREDERICTON MEMBER JACOB HILTZ
I am a 4th year Multi-Media and Film Studies student. I have worked on short films ranging in length from 1 minute to an hour. I have experience directing, shooting, and editing with digital video and 16mm film (I was a director on 'The Amazing Adventures of Captain Awesome'), as well as some acting experience.
I am mostly interested in directing, cinematography, and editing. I love to work with the camera and in the editing room, but would also like to get experience with lighting and sound.
I have only really acted before in short films for Multi-Media projects, but would enjoy doing more acting after recently taking a class in it.
With joining the Film Co-op, I would really just like to get involved in the NB film scene in anyway that I can. I understand the patience, hard work, skill, cooperation, and creativity that go into a film. This is a medium that I want to be a part of.

SILVER WAVE FILM FESTIVAL 2008
November 13-16, Fredericton
DEADLINE PASSES FOR SILVER WAVE 08!
(Intrepid Silver Wave volunteers Craig Chouinard and Carmel Teasdale working hard at SW 07 - Photo by John Calver)
SWFF is the annual film and video festival presented by the New Brunswick Filmmakers' Co-operative. It has both curated and competitive streams, as well as a solid line-up of social activities and workshops that get the town buzzing.
This year, we are celebrating our 8th year with some new programming approaches and again we’ve waived the submission fee for filmmakers submitting so, it promises to be a good year. Save the dates and plan to attend!
Film and video projects that are accepted for screening into the SWFF and created by New Brunswick Filmmakers residing in the province and those filmmakers from away will be considered for the Silver Wave Awards.
The deadline for submissions was August 3rd, 2008, 5pm Atlantic Standard Time.

HALIFAX - CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS - Salon des Refusés
Didn't get your film into the Atlantic Film Festival this year? Heck, have any of your films ever been refused by the Atlantic Film Festival?
Rejoice and apply to the 8th annual Salon!
Submission info at www.salonatlantique.orG
Submission Deadline: August 29, 2008, 5pm AST
***About the Salon***
The first Salon des Refusés was held in France back in 1863. Works which failed to satisfy the accepted definition of art at that time, were deemed dangerously subversive by the cultural elite and excluded from art exhibits.
Eventually, rejected artists persuaded Napoleon III to set up the Salon des Refusés, providing them with an opportunity to show their work. These rejected artists, including Renoir, Monet and Manet, would eventually become known as the Impressionists.
In celebration of the original Salon, the Salon des Refusés Atlantique, established by Steven James May in 2001 and based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, provides a venue for filmmakers rejected by the Atlantic Film Festival to screen their work.
There is no official selection of work screened at the Salon. Instead, the Salon is 'programmed' by randomly drawing submitted Atlantic Film Festival rejection letters from a lottery. The pile of letters drawn at the end of the day determines the works to be screened at the Salon.
***How do I Apply?***
Easy:
Step 1: Get rejected by the Atlantic Film Festival.
Step 2: E-mail your rejection letter from the Atlantic Film Festival, along with a completed Salon application form, to salonatlantique@hotmail.com
Step 3: Hope your film is randomly selected to screen at the Salon the night of September 10, 2008 in Halifax.

Arts in NB
SAINT JOHN - UNB SAINT JOHN PARTNERS WITH THIRD SPACE GALLERY
UNB Saint John and local Third Space Gallery have partnered to showcase contemporary art to pedestrians as they pass by UNB Saint John's Grand Hall at 40 Charlotte Street. The exhibitions will begin on August 8 .
"We are thrilled to have the opportunity to use one of our signature uptown locations to profile the work of New Brunswick artists," says Dr. Robert MacKinnon, Vice-President (Saint John). "We are also pleased to be working in such a creative way with Third Space Gallery."
The first exhibition is by Sackville native Tamara Henderson. Entitled, When I Am Not Around, Henderson's exhibit is an interactive sculptural installation which uses common cell phone technology to create a link between artist and spectator, and comments on our virtual connectivity in a globalized world. The exhibition works in tandem with a poster the artist has produced and sent to various locations around the globe, from Japan to Finland, Germany to Saint John. Callers to the cell phone — 651-0393 — activate the installation.
Third Space Gallery will highlight a number of displays for the 2008-09 season through a series entitled Interurbanicity, which will focus on the life of the City. These include:
Felicity Tayler's Pictorial Propaganda, in the month of October. Tayler will spend two weeks creating paintings based on those found in the NBM collection, but in various uptown locations to engage directly with the public about the role of art in society.
Donna Akrey's exhibit entitled, Loonieland + Stock, December 13 - January 25, 2009. Akrey will display a series of altered consumer products to create visual haiku poetry.
Eleanor King's exhibit entitled, Cuppa-Cups Collection, in March 2009. The artist will create sculptural and architectural forms from discarded paper cups. Scavenging workshops with the artist will be held during the first week of March.
Troy David Ouellette's exhibit entitled, A Valley of Ashes, Time Capsule Project, April 2009. Ouellette will display a series of objects relating to a time capsule buried at the 1939 World Fair in New York City. Time capsule workshops with the artist will be held.
Sym Corrigan and Leah Modigliani's exhibit entitled, Guided Tours and Commemorative Plaques, May 2009. The artists will create City of Saint John commemorative plaques and brochures from information gained on the internet.
Third Space Gallery is committed to presenting work by local, regional, and national professional contemporary artists, both established and emerging. Its aim is to facilitate the education, understanding and appreciation of contemporary art at a local, national, and international level. As the only artist-run gallery in Saint John, Third Space is an irreplaceable component of the City's arts and cultural community. The Gallery received funding for this project from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Saint John Community Arts Program. It receives annual operating funding from the NB Department of Wellness, Culture and Sport and support from its members, volunteers, the Telegraph Journal, Picaroons Traditional Ales and Punch Productions.

FACE OF THE FUTURE - FACE TRANSFORMER
Change the age, sex, or ethnicity of your face!
Posted by Tamiko, July 2, 2008
It's not new to upload your photo and then add different hairstyles to it to see how each style will work with your face. What's even better? St.Andrews' University's Face of the Future THE FACE TRANSFORMER, which allows you to upload your photo to transform your ethnicity (Afro-Caribbean, Caucasian, East Asian, or West Asian), age (baby, child, teenager, younger/older adult), or even turn your face into a manga image or an artistic vision (re: Botticelli or Modigliani style); as a drunk; and even as "Apeman" (50% ape)! Basically, harmless facial reconstruction!
Face of the Future is a publicly-funded project aimed at exploring the latest advances in facial computer vision and graphics, and what they mean for society. The project has developed a number of interactive exhibits, online demos and a lecture presentation aimed at engaging the public with the technology and the social implications of its technology.
Even better? You can save each facial transformation for your pleasure -- but as the disclaimer states: don't let your emotions colour your mood. After all, The Face Transformer is purely a fun toy! And just as plastic surgery proponents often say, once you make one change, you can't seem to stop (plus you can save all your images) -- highly addictive!

Independent Producers and Networks Reach Impasse in Terms of Trade Talks
Broadcasters refuse to engage in one-on-one negotiations with CFTPA
TORONTO, Aug. 7 /CNW Telbec/ - Terms of Trade negotiations between the Canadian Film and Television Production Association (CFTPA) and the major Canadian broadcast groups have reached an impasse before even formally getting underway, after CTVglobemedia, Canwest Global and Rogers Broadcasting refused
to negotiate with the CFTPA on a broadcaster-by-broadcaster basis, insisting instead on a group negotiation with all three broadcast groups at the table.
"I am disappointed and surprised that the broadcasters are advocating an approach that would not and could not lead to serious, substantive and enforceable Terms of Trade agreements," said the CFTPA's Principal Advisor on Terms of Trade, Gordon Ritchie. Terms of Trade are framework agreements aimed at defining and valuing program rights. These framework agreements would apply to individual negotiations between broadcasters and producers, which producers hope will mitigate the severe imbalances in negotiating power that have been created by the broadcaster consolidation of recent years.
Discussions between the two sides over whether negotiations should be undertaken with the broadcasters as a group or on a broadcaster-by-broadcaster basis had been ongoing in the weeks leading up to the first meeting between the parties, held at the end of July. This was followed by another meeting yesterday. The refusal of the broadcast groups to negotiate with the CFTPA
one-on-one has precluded substantive negotiations from commencing.
"We have been ready and willing - even eager - to negotiate for some time. But in our view, a group negotiation can only lead to a race to the bottom, with the resulting agreement loaded with high-minded principles, but lacking in specifics and substance," said CFTPA President and CEO Guy Mayson. John Barrack, CFTPA Executive Vice-President and Counsel, noted that a
collectively negotiated agreement would likely be so vague as to be
unenforceable.
"Enforceability is predicated on specificity," said Barrack. "The more
vague the agreement, the less enforceable - and less meaningful - it is. Our members have told us that their sustainability depends on having Terms of Trade that are clear, specific and binding on both sides. We are far more likely to achieve those aims by negotiating with each broadcast group individually." A variety of options are being explored by the CFTPA negotiating team to try to break the impasse and commence negotiations, Ritchie said.
"The reality is that all of us are facing significant time pressures to
reach an agreement," said Mayson. "The CRTC expects each broadcast group to have concluded an agreement with the CFTPA in time for the submission of their licence renewal applications, which will likely be due later this year. This means that we need to be engaged in real, substantive bargaining throughout the fall."
The CFTPA is a non-profit trade organization that works on behalf of
almost 400 small and medium-sized businesses engaged in the production and distribution of English-language television programs, feature films, and interactive media products in all regions of Canada.
The CFTPA promotes the general interests of members provincially, federally, and internationally; negotiates and manages labour agreements with guilds and unions; administers
copyright collectives; trains new industry entrants through several national internship programs; and undertakes a number of other specific initiatives that help increase awareness and enhance communication within the Canadian and international production communities. The independent production sector directly or indirectly employs more than 61,000 people in communities across
Canada.
