NATIONAL SCREEN INSTITUTE - CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
NSI Online Short Film Festival: NSI’s new year-round short film showcase
Winnipeg – The National Screen Institute - Canada (NSI) is now calling for submissions for its brand-new, year-round short film showcase: the NSI Online Short Film Festival.
Through the NSI Online Short Film Festival, NSI anticipates streaming around 100 Canadian short films on its website annually. Four calls will be issued each year.
The deadline for this first call for submissions is February 4, 2008. There is no submission fee. Submissions will be accepted on DVD only.
For full details and an application form: http://nsi-canada.ca/nsionlineshortfilmfestival/
During each selection period, approximately 25 films will be programmed and streamed on the NSI site.
Liz Janzen, NSI’s Director of Programming says, “The NSI Online Short Film Festival is all about promoting Canadian films and the people who make them so we’ll be profiling the filmmakers in new ways to give them as much exposure as possible.”
“Moving to an online format also means we’ll significantly extend our audience so even more people can enjoy the best in Canadian short film.”
“We’re making the user experience interactive. The festival will provide plenty of opportunity to talk about the films and network with other site visitors.”
Submissions must be short narratives not longer than 30 mins: the shorter the better. They can be dramas, comedies, animations or short documentaries but they must tell a story and they must be Canadian.
All entries will be screened by an NSI selection committee led by Janzen.
There will be a “Best of” award given to one film from each of the four selection periods which will be cash and/or services. The award will be made by an independent jury comprised of filmmakers and industry members. Details will be announced in early 2008.
The NSI Online Short Film Festival is part of the organisation’s new web-based initiatives. More details will follow in 2008.
The National Screen Institute - Canada, with headquarters in Winnipeg, is Canada's oldest nationally-recognized film and television training school. The National Screen Institute helps emerging writers, directors and producers bring their stories to life to share at home and abroad. Its market-driven programs have led to employment for National Screen Institute graduates by giving them a competitive edge - according to the latest National Screen Institute Alumni Survey, 97% of respondents are working in the industry.

FREDERICTON - Gallery Connexion and Motion Ensemble present 'Unsilent Night'
Wanted: People with boomboxes!
Performance begins at 7pm sharp at Gallery Connexion on December 21, 2007
A beautiful, mobile piece of ambient public art, Unsilent Night can be compared to a holiday caroling party — except that participants don’t sing. Instead, each carries an ordinary boombox playing a separate cassette or CD that becomes part of the piece.
New York composer Phil Kline wrote this 43 minute piece in which participants become single elements in a huge, moving sound system. Performed within the confines of the city streets, Unsilent Night reverberates off the cars and buildings, resulting in a magnificent, drifting cloud of shimmering, echoing sound. Unsilent Night has been done in New York City every year since 1992. In San Francisco in 2006, some 400 people took part.
Let's see how many folks we can get in Fredericton!
To get participants in the best frame of mind, there will first be a performance of works by W.L. Altman, Michael Miller, Peter Sculthorpe and more by Andrew Miller, bass, Helen Pridmore, voice and D’Arcy Philip Gray, percussion. Then, we head to the streets!
Don't forget to bring a boombox for yourself, batteries, and warm clothing depending on the weather.
CDs will be provided or if you want to use an MP3, download the music for free at http://www.unsilentnight.com/download/
For more information on Unsilent Night, see these fine sites:
http://www.myspace.com/unsilentnight
-Andrew Miller is well-known to New Brunswick audiences from his work in Motion Ensemble, Symphony NB, Atlantic Sinfonia, Opera NB, UNB Music Camp and the NB Summer Music Festival
-Helen Pridmore, who has taught voice at Mount Allison University since 1999, has recently worked on projects in New York, Banff and London.
-D’Arcy Philip Gray worked in the STEIM Electroacoustic Studios(Amsterdam), taught at McGill University, been a member of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company in New York and given recitals in Canada, the United States, Europe, and South America.

“Sticks and Stones" - filmed in Fredericton, and based on a Fredericton true story
Friendship Takes Centre Ice in CTV’s Original Movie
Sticks and Stones, Jan. 1
- As Canada goes for gold in the Czech Republic, David Sutcliffe, Alexander De Jordy and Daniel Magder star in an inspirational hockey movie about sportsmanship –
Toronto, ON (December 18, 2007) –As the World Junior Hockey Championship on TSN takes a day off on New Year’s Day, hockey fans can score with the premiere of the CTV Original Movie Sticks and Stones, Tuesday, January 1 at 8 p.m. ET (visit CTV.ca to confirm local listings). The two-hour movie is inspired by a compelling true story of how a Canadian Pee-Wee hockey team in Fredericton, New Brunswick mended Canadian/U.S. relations in the world of amateur sport. Sticks and Stones stars Canadians David Sutcliffe (Gilmore Girls, Private Practice), young television star Daniel Magder (Disney’s Life With Derek), and introduces young Toronto actor Alexander De Jordy. From the producers of critical and commercial success C.R.A.Z.Y., Sticks and Stones was shot in Fredericton, Saint John and Montreal this past summer.
** Media Note ** Download photos from Sticks and Stones at http://www.ctvmedia.ca
In Sticks and Stones, the captain of a Canadian Pee-Wee hockey team organizes a tournament to make amends for the horrible treatment an American team received during a visit to Canada in March, 2003. As the movie begins, the U.S. invasion of Iraq is making headlines when a bus carrying the Brockton Boxers, a team of 12-year-old American hockey players from Brockton, Massachusetts, makes its way to a Pee-Wee tournament in Canada. The Boxers are met by thousands of anti-war protesters who attack their bus. Later, when the American players attend a Montreal Canadiens game, Canadian fans boo the American national anthem and barrage the Boxers with heckles to “go home.”
Despite playing with their chins up, the Boxers face the tough Fredericton Canadiens team and an unfair and seemingly anti-American referee. After this bitter experience the American boys and their families leave, vowing never to return to Canada. A year later, thanks to the efforts of Jordy (Alexander De Jordy), the captain of the Fredericton Canadiens, the American Pee-Wee players are welcomed back to Canada for the "Friendship 2004 Hockey Tournament.”
Neil Martin (David Sutcliffe) is Jordy’s father and coach of the Fredericton Canadiens, who helps his son create the Friendship Tournament; Neil’s assistant coach Craig (Mark Camacho) lives through his own son’s NHL dreams and challenges the idea of the Friendship Tournament. The Brockton Boxers are represented by team captain Michael Carver (Daniel Magder); his father, Peter (John Robinson), a police officer and dedicated hockey dad; and coach Al Bouchard (Richard Fitzpatrick), a patriotic American who at first is not convinced the Friendship Tournament is a good idea.
“As we cheer on the Canadian Junior Team playing in the Czech Republic, Sticks and Stones celebrates peace, unity, and good sportsmanship, on and off the ice,” said Susanne Boyce, President, Creative, Content and Channels, CTV Inc.
“Sticks and Stones sends an important message to all ages, especially the younger generations,” said Josée Vallée, Producer and President, Cirrus Communications. “Sportsmanship is key in all aspects of life – at the hockey rink, with our friends, and even with strangers,” adds Producer Rick LeGuerrier of New Brunswick-based Dream Street Pictures.
Sticks and Stones is produced by Cirrus Communications and Dream Street Pictures (Moncton). Producers are André Béraud and Josée Vallée for Cirrus Communications (C.R.A.Z.Y., Naked Josh) and Timothy M. Hogan and Rick LeGuerrier for Dream Street Pictures (Canada Russia ’72, Open Heart). Directed by acclaimed director George Mihalka (Dr. Lucille, Race to Mars), Sticks and Stones features a script by Creative Producer Sharon Buckingham (To Walk With Lions, Beastmaster) and Andrew Wreggitt (Shades of Black: The Conrad Black Story, One Dead Indian). The CTV executive overseeing the film is Samantha Morris Mastai. Louise Clark is Vice-President, Program Development for CTV. Susanne Boyce is President, Creative, Content and Channels, CTV Inc.
Sticks and Stones is the latest dramatic title from CTV's Signature Series, CTV’s original movie production strand that features programming dealing with social issues of national importance. Previous titles that have enjoyed critical and ratings success include 2007 Best TV Movie Gemini winner Doomstown, in addition to, among others, Last Exit, Selling Innocence, One Dead Indian; Plague City, Milgaard; The Sheldon Kennedy Story; Tagged: The Jonathan Wamback Story; Prom Queen: The Marc Hall Story and Choice: The Henry Morgentaler Story. The Terrorist Next Door, inspired by the real-life events surrounding the recruitment and capture of Ahmed Ressam – aka the “Millennium Bomber” - is the next Signature Series movie slated for broadcast. CTV's Signature Series was established in 1997.

fredericton - Complimentary headshots/pictures for models & actors
My name is Cody Caissie. I am a 3rd year student at the New Brunswick College of Craft & Design. I've majored in Photography with Peter Gross as my instructor.
I am presently doing an 'independent study' focusing on Fashion Photography/Portraiture.
I am looking for models or people who want to develop their acting
and modeling skills in front of a camera. It was suggested to me that I should contact the NB Filmmakers Co-op to see if anyone might be interested in modeling for me. It's very important for me that my model is happy with the pictures. He or she will get a free selection of a few of the images from the shoot.
I would really appreciate it if you could pass this information on to your extensive listserv.
You can also check out my web site for pictures I have done in my first two years at the college.
Thank you for your help
Sincerely,
