CONTINUITY/SCRIPT SUPERVISOR
(Advanced)
December 15/16, Saturday/Sunday
10:00 am - 6 pm
Instructor: Maggie Thomas
Fee: $75 For Film Co-op Members
$100 For Non-Members
What is continuity in film? Why do you need a Script Supervisor? The wardrobe person takes care of which hand an actor uses for their bag, the set dresser takes care of whether the windows are open or closed, props takes care of how much wine there is in a glass, and the camera operator cares about axis. So what does this person who stands close to the centre of action do? How do we tell a story on film? What are the practicalities of creating the pieces that will become a film under the guide of the editor?
The workshop examines the practical responsibilities of the Script Supervisor, including the Script Timing, the Editor's Continuity Notes, the Daily Log, the Slate, the Production Report, and the Lined Script. The workshop will go on to show how it is possible to achieve the supreme knowledge of the script to justify the title 'Script Supervisor'.
There will be a hands-on exercises using a script that the participants will be asked to read before hand. The participants will also be asked to bring a stop watch as well.
BIOGRAPHY: Maggie began developing workshops when she was a wardrobe set supervisor in Toronto. Her reasoning was that when new people joined her on the set she did not want to have to teach them the basics or worry about how they were conducting themselves on set or with the actors.
In 1988 she changed careers within the industry and took a course to become Script Supervisor. Then, in 1989 she moved to Nova Scotia where the film industry was beginning to take off. In the early days of the union local, it became obvious that there was a need to train new people in the industry because new people on set were an embarrassment to the union and even a safety hazard.
At the least the union wanted to instil a sense of professionalism amongst all its members. So, with the help of many, but principally Bob Petre from Newfoundland, who was doing the same thing over on the island, Maggie developed a Set Etiquette Workshop.
Four years ago the Executive of IATSE Local 849 agreed that it was important to make the workshop more approachable and entertaining. As a result a video was produced that visited a set and showed a crew at work.
Maggie continues to work in the industry as a Script Supervisor. Most recently she worked on Poor Boy's Game, a boxing story set in Halifax and Pushing Up Daisies a black comedy also set in Nova Scotia about an unusual funeral director and a love affair.

VARIETY MAGAZINE - Summit addresses film festival issues
Event centers on the future of festivals
By SCOTT KIRSNER
Fill a ballroom with directors of film festivals and you'll hear a representative sampling of their anxieties, from the challenges of finding sponsors and attracting media attention to the cost of importing big-name stars for red carpet appearances. One anxiety left unvoiced at the fourth annual Intl. Film Festival Summit, however, was that there may simply be too many fests, with an estimated 4,000-7,000 worldwide.
Piers Handling, CEO of the Toronto Film Festival Group, said as video viewing on the Internet explodes, audiences will actually find more value in the real-world opportunities that festivals offer to meet filmmakers and fellow cineastes.
But Handling also spoke in his keynote address of worries that the biggest festivals are "verging on being co-opted by the industry," used as a promotional launch pad for more commercial fare.
Handling told Daily Variety that while he acknowledges the need to engage audiences in new ways, he doesn't think his festival would be willing to experiment with letting audiences select some of the films that screen there.
Smaller fests, though, are giving audience-driven programming a whirl. The Independent Television Festival in L.A., for instance, has a "second chance" slot, allowing Internet users to vote into the festival a TV pilot they believe the selection committee has overlooked. And next month's Slamdance Film Festival will include five short films created by users of the Current TV website.
Telluride Film Festival co-director Gary Meyer theorized that regional film festivals are filling the spot vanishing arthouse cinemas once occupied in the cultural landscape.
Tech vendors were a major presence at the conference. Seattle company IndieFlix was touting a way for festivals to sell "online passes" that would allow fans and industryites to view fest movies online if they couldn't attend in person. Chris Hyams, CEO of Austin, Texas-based B-Side Entertainment, said his software could help recommend movies that fest attendees might enjoy, based on their individual tastes.
Sessions on selling sponsorship and working with the media were packed with attendees. Less full was a session led by two independent filmmakers, who advised fest organizers to drop their entry fees, supply free travel and housing and make sure that filmmakers could gain entry to the best parties.

Bruce McDonald Launches Tracey: Re-Fragmented
If you’ve ever wanted to edit a feature film then here’s your chance. Director Bruce McDonald is releasing footage from his newest film The Tracey Fragments online for anyone to edit.
How much footage? Well pretty much all of it. In a page on the film’s official website there is a part called Re-Fragmented. There, anyone can download all of the footage shot during the four weeks of production in four separate BitTorrent files. The site states the downloads are approximately 4-5 gigs each and include a Final Cut Pro project file. The winner may have his or her cut included as a bonus feature on the DVD. The catch? The contest is only open to residents of Canada.
While Americans can’t enter, they can still download and play with the footage. It’s not often that one get offered all the footage from a feature film to edit and use on their own. In fact the site even states that users can “download and edit their own related projects including music videos, new trailers or re-edit the entire movie.” Being that the files are so large it might take some time to download them. But if you can and you have the time it could be a great learning experience.
Thanks to Filmlinker for pointing this one out.
