Spotlight! - The Mentors

The internal production, Diplomatic Relations is a three-part series which tells three different stories (15-20 mins each) which all occur at the same table at different points in the night at a 24 hour restaurant. Each story begins with an incident at the restaurant and then we flashback to events of the recent past which led up to that particular incident.

The series is being done through the NB Film Co-op's new Film and Television Certificate Programme

We will be spotlighting the rest of the mentors for Diplomatic Relations over the next few weeks.

HOLD THE PRESS! - NEW FREDERICTON MEMBER  JANE OGILVIE

Hi Cat

I am finished teaching till next Sept with retirement in the near future and am serious about wanting to compose for film and TV. Just attended composing for film workshops at the ECMAS (also last year) and am hot to trot.

I wish to submit the following attached work (MP3 format), and offer my services as composer and music provider for NB Film Co-op member films. There are other examples as well but these pieces are pretty much ready. My electronic press kit is at http://www.sonicbids.com/celtiqueair

Just click on audio. All the arrangements on that site are mine, and 3 of the compositions - Sonata Celtique, Murmansk Run and Where Does Mother Go, I play all parts of Sonata Celtique and Where Does Mother Go.

Complete versions of 3 of my pieces can be found at http://www.sibeliusmusic.com and then click on Ogilvie.

Sounds like things are hopping at the NB Film  Co-op.

Cheers
Jane Ogilvie

BIOGRAPHY
Jane Ogilvie is a composer and performer, primarily in the Celtic genre. Her formal music training was on the piano, but she usually performs on harp and accordion. An educator most of her adult life, Jane currently teaches Biology at Leo Hayes High School in Fredericton, New Brunswick, her hometown. Jane has been a member of the New Brunswick based groups Oran, Solstice, Mosaic and Brimmin’.

Jane’s musical partnership with Helen McKinnon, in the folk duo Celtique Air, has endured for almost 20 years. Their first CD Voice of the Leal was released in 1996. Another will be ready for Christmas 2006. Jane also contributed to Oran’s recording For Kith and Kith and has worked as a studio musician on several recordings at Sound Outreach studio and Reel North studio.

Jane has performed solo and as part of ensembles and provided workshops at scores of festivals, highland games, recitals and special events in the Atlantic region. She was also invited to be part of the entertainment at the International Folk Harp Festival in Seattle, Washington

Artist and reviewer Marion Cummings writes “The purity and clarity of the sound, voices blending so beautifully with the harp and other instruments, melded perfectly with their natural manner and sharing spirit”. Reviewer Sara Kennedy writes “One of Celtique Air’s biggest attributes is Ms. Ogilvie’s skill on the harp. Not only did she perform technically clean, but she exhibited a wide range of dynamics”.

Although Jane has been writing her own arrangements since the early 90’s, she is most proud of the original pieces she composed for the Mosaic concert in November, 2005. The three-part instrumental Sonata Celtique was written for harp, piano, bass, penny whistle and violin. The song Murmansk Run, written for voice, fiddle, accordion and bass is a rousing tribute to the WWII seamen who were involved in that precarious mission. Jane also wrote an ensemble for harp, flute and cello, an arrangement of Carolan’s Draught, written by the famous Irish harper during the Baroque period. Samples of this music is provided on this site.

HOLD THE PRESS! - RENEWED SAINT JOHN MEMBER ROSI JORY

Hallo Cat,

The fuzzy hat to the left, from a recent photo is part of my kayaking gear. Kayaking the Bay of Fundy in winter is chilly.

"And the Shark has Teeth" is an oil pastel on Bristol board from some time ago.

"Wild Life - La Vie Sauvage" is an Arctic Fleece wall hanging, which I made for and exhibited at the IV. Biennale, Florence, Italy, 2003.

More words needed? Originating from Berlin, Germany, via Neuchatel, Switzerland and Ontario I arrived in Saint John NB in 1965 - my new home. Blessed with boundless energy, even in retirement, I need to connect. I joined the NB Film Co-op because of its vitality, big picture approach and pool of interesting people wanting to get their stories out. My lived life story may be found at http://personal.nbnet.nb.ca/rosij/About.htm and in above wall hanging.

Orange houses, green locomotives and yellow boxes flying towards and around the sun/globe - couldn't these pictured codes or coded pictures one day help to connect neighbours, help to create stories in many different languages?

FREDERICTON - MONDAY NIGHT FILM SERIES

Feb 25, 2008, 8pm, Tilley Hall, UNB, Fredericton
PERSEPOLIS
Director: Marjane Satrapi
Cast: Gabrielle Lopes, Chiara Mastroianni, Catherine Deneuve, Simon
Abkarian, Danielle Darrieux
Run Time: 95 minutes
Country: France
Year: 2007
Language: French only or English only

Before debuting to much fanfare at the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival®, where it played to packed theatre audiences as a Special Presentation, PERSEPOLIS was well-known as the autobiographic novel of talented graphic novelist, illustrator and children‘s book author Marjane Satrapi. Having won the Jury Prize at Cannes and the Special Jury Prize at the Cinemanila International Film Festival, the much-anticipated animated adaptation PERSEPOLIS has been busy winning crowds over internationally.

PERSEPOLIS is Satrapi‘s darkly humorous take on her experiences as a young Muslim woman Marjane, played by Chiara Mastroianni (CARNAGES, LES CHANSONS D‘AMOUR), who comes of age in Tehran – during the rule of the Shah, the Islamic Revolution and the Iran-Iraq War. Fit with an exceptional cast including her Mother‘s voice played by Catherine Deneuve (8 FEMMES, LES LIAISONS DANGEREUSES) and Father's voice played by Simon Abkarian, (ARARAT, CASINO ROYALE) PRESEPOLIS dares to examine heavy issues through the animated grace of storytelling like no other.

We follow the misadventures of Marjane from mischievous little girl in Iran to rebellious teenager finding first love amid decadent anarchists at a snooty French school in Vienna. The film then charts the young woman‘s heavy-hearted return to Iran, and finally her emigration to Paris. Marjane's family history reveals how her Communist relatives who fought against the Shah were then persecuted even more harshly by the Islamists who took their place. Amidst these harsh realities the film maintains a refreshing levity as each haunting event is balanced with Satrapi‘s charming animation style – bold, graphic, and simple yet forcefully stylized.

The universal appeal of PERSEPOLIS is such that people everywhere can relate to the conflict between a warm and open home life and the harsh outside world. Some of the funniest moments in the film come from Marjane‘s interpretation of politics as child; whispering chants of political protest marching to bed. Or, the Islamic authorities‘ demonization of American popular culture, when Marjane's teachers decry her Nike shoes as "punk." Overall the film manages not only to be faithful to the much-loved books, but to create from them a daring cinematic experience.

"Any stragglers still unconvinced that animation can be an exciting medium for both adults and kids will run out of arguments in the face of Persepolis" – Lisa Nesselson, Variety
