The NBFC takes center stage on Diplomatic Relations
NBFC E-news - Thur, Jan 31, 2008
Spotlight! - Diplomatic Relations
The internal production, Diplomatic Relations is a four-part anthology series which tells four different stories
(15-20 mins each) which all occur at the same table at different points in the night at a 24 hour restaurant.
Each story begins with an incident at the restaurant and then we flashback to events of the recent past which led
up to that particular incident.
The decision to produce a four part anthology series through the New NB Film Co-op Film and Television Certificate programme was done to serve two main purposes. First, we believe that true learning is done through hands-on experience so we wanted our students to be able to perform the various tasks in a real world environment. Professional mentors from the NB and NS film and television industry (Jacquie Anderson - Location Manager, Jason Shipley - AD, Elizabeth Guildford - Production Manager, Paul LeBlanc - Hair & Makeup, Maggie Thomas - Script Supervisor etc.) have been asked to be involved to make sure the students
and other trainees are learning how to do the various jobs properly. Secondly, by choosing a project that was produced in installments, we could spread around the duties to more than one person. For example, we have four different writers, four different directors, four different editors, multiple A.D.'s etc.
We began the process by putting together a writer's room last summer. By the fall we had four polished scripts and put out the call for directors. With our directors now on board we are wrapping up casting and are in full pre-production as we get closer and closer to our February 18th start date. We will shoot and finish this project on high definition. We are confident this will not only be an invaluable training tool but also be a high end broadcast quality production.
This project is a labor of love.

FREDERICTON - MONDAY NIGHT FILM SERIES

DEATH AT A FUNERAL
Director: Frank Oz
Cast: Matthew Macfadyen, Peter Dinklage, Alan Tudyk , Ewn Bremner, Rupert Graves
Run Time: 90 minutes
Country: Germany/United Kingdom/USA
Year: 2007
Language: English
Distributor: Alliance Films – Odeon
Ratings: ON 14A / BC 14A / AB 14A / SK 18A / MB 14A / PQ 13 ANS+ / Maritimes NR
Fresh off the international film festival circuit, acclaimed director Frank Oz (IN & OUT, BOWFINGER) continues to wow audiences with his dark, award-winning comedy DEATH AT A FUNERAL. The film professes a stellar cast bursting with genius humour that is at once sophisticated and fun.
The film opens with the somber delivery of a coffin to the august home of the deceased's son Daniel, a blocked writer played by Matthew Mcfayden (PRIDE & PREJUDICE), who discovers that the body inside is not, in fact, his father. So begins a string of comedic errors as a second coffin is delivered to the mourning family. Amongst them is the second son, a pretentious and famous author Robert (Rupert Graves, V FOR VENDETTA); their cousin Martha (Daisy Donovan, MILLIONS) and anxious fiance Simon (Alan Tudyk, DODGEBALL: A TRUE UNDERDOG STORY, KNOCKED UP).
The plot thickens as Daniel's wife's disdain for his family becomes evident, and Simon's hopes to make an impression upon his severe father-in-law cause him to seek relaxation via pharmaceutical drugs; only, he discovers he's ingested hallucinogens by accident. In addition to the family, a motley crew of characters continue to join the proceedings, including an inexplicable guest Peter (Peter Dinklage, THE STATION AGENT, UNDERDOG) and a group of British eccentrics, hypochondriacs and the foul-mouthed elderly.
The hilarity ensues in direct correlation to the sibling rivalry intensification.
Daniel's apparent effort to prepare a eulogy end up in disappointment as the family realizes their eloquent and published relative won't be delivering it. Simon's hallucinogenic trip allows him to shed more then his inhibitions when he's discovered on the roof top without his clothes on. Finally, family secrets are almost revealed as Peter's mysterious presence and relationship to the deceased is discovered. These combined elements soon force the two brothers to work together in desperate hopes of not only burying their dad but also the family skeletons.
DEATH AT A FUNERAL is funny because of Oz's ability to convey on screen the way tragedy and crisis bring out the best and worst in even the most apparently functional families. The impeccably performed medley of characters is one remarkable element among many in this inordinately hilarious British comedy, comparable to the hijinx-laden Peter Sellers films and reminiscent of FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL. Fun from start to finish.
"The casting couldn't be better. With no big stars to upset the balance, the actors work together as a true ensemble, the best since Little Miss Sunshine." - Ruthe Stein, San Francisco Chronicle

The NB Film Co-op experimental fILM pROGRAMME Presents: Visiting Filmmaker ANDREA DORFMAN
WHEN:
Saturday, February 9th,
11am to 3pm
WHERE:
NB Film Co-op, 732 Charlotte Street, Charlotte Street Arts Centre, Fredericton.
Wondering how you can make the transition from Short films to Feature films? Trying to figure out how to maintain the playfulness and ingenuity of the short film when shooting a longer production? Wonder what the role of a Film Co-op can be in this process?
Join Halifax-based filmmaker Andrea Dorfman ("Parsely Days", "Love That Boy") for a workshop that explores these questions. Dorfman will be screening excerpts of her work, talking about her personal filmmaking practice, and will be doing a workshop on the practical elements of getting a feature film made in Atlantic Canada.
Andrea Dorfman
WRITER/DIRECTOR/CINEMATOGRAPHER
One of Canada's most promising, versatile and truly independent filmmakers, Andrea Dorfman started making Super 8 films with friends in high school before graduating from Montreal's McGill University in 1992. She graduated from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax in 1995 and then wrote, directed, shot and edited several experimental short films through the Atlantic Filmmakers Co-op while working as a camera assistant in Halifax's commercial film industry. An active member of the Co-op, she headed various committees over the years and served on its Board of Directors.
In 1998 she made her first dramatic short film, Swerve, a road-trip movie centering on an all-female love triangle, as well as Nine, a half-hour documentary exploring a year in the life of a nine-year-old girl diagnosed with separation anxiety. Both films earned her the award for Most Promising New Director at the Atlantic Film Festival and went on to play at many international festivals. Swerve was named Best Lesbian Short at Toronto's Inside Out Lesbian and Gay Film and Video Festival, while Nine garnered the Marion McMahon Award at the 1999 Images Festival in Toronto and earned a nomination for Best Short at Toronto's Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Film Festival.
Dorfman then produced, wrote, shot and directed her first feature film, Parsley Days (2000), which she shot in eleven days in the summer of 1999. It premiered to great acclaim at the Toronto International Film Festival®, was named one of Canada's Top Ten by an independent, national panel of filmmakers, programmers, journalists and industry professionals, won Best Cinematography and Best Actress Awards at the Atlantic Film Festival and was runner-up for Best First Feature at the Avanca Film Festival in Portugal.
After directing, producing and co-writing three seasons of the
award-winning CBC-TV series "Street Cents" from 2000 to 2002, Dorfman made her sophomore feature Love That Boy (2003), (Still to right:
Love That Boy
), which drew consistently positive reviews upon its release and was screened at festivals around the world. Next, short film, There's A Flower in my Pedal (2004) received the runner up to Best Short at the Toronto Film Festival '05. Her first documentary, Sluts (2005) made for the Life Network, explores the mythology surrounding high school students who are labeled with the derogatory term and won Best Documentary at the Atlantic Film Festival ('05). Along with several projects of her own and with a variety of collaborators, she is currently in development on her third feature, Harmony, with co-writer Jennifer Deyell and
a documentary, Flawed, with the NFB.

BANDS
el Viento Flamenco
- El Viento Flamenco brings its own, very distinct voice to the art form. With a singer and guitarist who hail from rock and roll, a percussionist who is involved in everything from Newfoundland folk to African drumming and Punk rock, and dancers who have lived all over the world, the group stands subtly but resolutely outside of flamenco tradition.
Sean's "voz clara" is perhaps the most defining element of El Viento Flamenco's sound. With years of performing gospel, blues, and rock, he has developed a unique style and clear timbre which sets El Viento Flamenco apart from other flamenco troupes around the world. El Viento Flamenco also benefits from singer Maral's background in Armenian folk and Turkish pop tunes. Together, the singers provide the inspiration for the elegant simplicity of the dancing, while both the singers and dancer are sustained by the crisp, aggressive sound of Bob's guitar. Tony, with his influences of Celtic, Middle-Eastern, African and Rock drumming, adds the final touch to El Viento Flamenco's singular sound. The genuine expression of each artist's individuality is of prime importance: thus, in its own way, El Viento Flamenco is fiercely authentic.
Brollachan
- Brollachan is made up of members who are all well versed in the Scottish and Irish traditions but who are able to blend influences from Latin, French-Canadian, and world genres into the mix.
You've got to hear their take on traditional tunes and rockin' reels and jigs. But this band offers a whole lot more.
With years playing and performing in the Celtic style as individuals, this instrumental band has come together to create a blend of sounds truly unique to Brollachan. With Krista's Cape Breton fiddle tradition, Matt's strong pipe band background, and Carolyn's years of Celtic accompaniment, Brollachan has moved beyond to bring a fresh face to these influences. And, although the group's name is taken from Celtic mythology, Brollachan brings the spirit of the Celts alive with infectious jigs and reels and original material by Krista, Matt, and Carolyn. Brollachan has performed for private kitchen parties, festivals, conferences and on many concert stages around New Brunswick, the Maritimes and Ontario. Their first CD recording was released in July 2007.
Gypsophilia
- Taking inspiration from the music of the legendary French jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt, Halifax’s Gypsophilia combines hot jazz and European gypsy music, adding their own modern edge and fusing elements of tango, klezmer, funk, and classical in their original music.
Admired by listening and dancing audiences young and old, the group's passionate, exciting and sophisticated sound has quickly catapulted them to unprecedented jazz popularity in Nova Scotia. Not simply a Gypsy-jazz cover band, Gypsophilia’s unique voice comes from the fusion of the members’ diverse musical and artistic backgrounds, as well as from their innovative and eclectic original repertoire.

2007 Update: Last year, a total of 167 scripts were optioned or writers hired/repped through InkTip. We had 18 films produced from scripts/writers found via our services, and there are at least 20 already scheduled to start production in ’08!
Register for access here: www.inktip.com/pro-register1.php
See below for great loglines from up-and-coming writers and contest winners!
We are pleased to announce that another feature has been optioned and two short scripts have been acquired through our network!
Vicki Letizia with Porchlight Entertainment has optioned the feature script ‘True Confession’ from InkTip writer Daniel Smith, after discovering his script on InkTip. Ironically, although their paths have never crossed before, Smith sold another script to Showtime a few years ago while Vicki was working there! PorchLight Entertainment, a multi-faceted production and distribution company, has produced more than 40 live-action and animated movies, including the recent Christmas film ‘The Family Holiday,’ which starred Dave Coulier, and ‘Secrets of Maple Cove,’ starring Melissa Joan Hart. Daniel Smith’s produced credits include ‘Black Indians: An American Story,’ a documentary narrated by James Earl Jones. He also has another project under option, ‘The Phoenix,’ with Nick Cannon attached to star and produce.
Rich Helms of That's Rich Productions has purchased the short horror/comedy script 'The Usual Sacrifice' from InkTip scribe Philip Greenstreet. Greenstreet, a winner of an Academy Technical Achievement Award for his work in developing a backdrop filming system, has had one previous feature option and another hire to write a feature screenplay. Helms has worked in image technology since the mid-1980s, and his production company is the culmination of a lifelong dream. 'The Usual Sacrifice' joins another short film project in Helms' portfolio, which continues to grow.
Mike Garcia with Gingerbread Productions has optioned Kenneth Shelden’s short script, ‘Living with Ned - The Mad Scientist' after finding it on InkTip. This is Shelden’s first short option through InkTip, although he also has a feature script currently under option. ‘Living with Ned’ is being developed as a pilot for a series of short films/webisodes. Shooting is scheduled for April 2008.
Congratulations and best of success to them all!
