Spotlight!

IN MEMORY

ERROL WILLIAMS SPECIAL SCREENING EVENT & RECEPTION

56 year old NB Film Co-op Alumnus Errol Williams passed away suddenly on Saturday evening in a hospital in Bermuda in July, 2007.

Errol was a huge supporter and contributor to the NB Film Co-op. As a long time member filmmaker he remained involved in the organization throughout the years whether he was living in Fredericton, Halifax or Bermuda.

(by Chris Campbell, past Film Co-op President)

Just over a year ago we lost our friend Errol.

Anyone who knew Errol remembers his smile, his laugh, his keen intellect and endless curiosity. He loved to tell stories and to listen to them. In his travels he made many friends and through filmmaking he was able to share more stories and give many people chances to grow as filmmakers. Errol had a powerful and lasting impact on the NB Filmmakers' Co-op as a mentor and a friend. From his short film "Driftwood" to the documentary "Echoes in the Rink: The Willie O'Ree Story" he developed as a filmmaker and the Co-op grew with him. During the production of "Echoes in the Rink" the Co-op expanded in membership, production and professionalism.

Many people were drawn to filmmaking and helped by Errol through his patience and generosity. While he worked in Bermuda and Nova Scotia, he maintained his friendships and connections with the Co-op over the years and regularly attended the Silver Wave Film Festival.

Errol's final visit to the Film Co-op was during Silver Wave in November of 2006 where he was able to see many friends and share stories and laughter.

On Saturday, August 23 at 7pm at Marshall D'Avray Hall, UNB Room 143 (Dugald Blue Auditorium), Fredericton, NB, The NB Film Co-op and Errol's mom and family will show some of Errol's films and share some memories, stories and laughter in a casual environment with a reception afterwards. He still inspires us and brings us together.

AS SEEN FROM HERE

By Jim Lavoie

The deadline for submissions for the Capital Cultural Film Project is tomorrow (25th July) and reports indicate that an eclectic mixture of Fredericton lore & history have been submitted. Once the submissions are vetted, the Film Co-op will announce the selected stories. This excellent cultural program will provide a unique historical overview of New Brunswick's Capital City and the NB Film Co-op is proud to be a key participant!

It's great to see that Short Film Venture Recipients Joel Thompson (Ugly) and Britany Sparrow's (The Morning After) principal shooting was completed recently but what impressed me even more was finding out that the cast and crew of both had a lot of fun working on the projects. I have no doubt their final films will be top notch. Too often we take what we love to do way too seriously and end up not enjoying the experiences shared during the process.

On July 4th, Film Co-op member actor Lita Llewellyn was a guest on Christine McLean Presents on Information Morning, CBC. Every Friday, long time Film Co-op supporter Christine McLean takes a look at what's happening in the local arts scene.

Christine McLean is an award-winning journalist specializing in arts and culture. She was CBC Television's first dedicated arts journalist in New Brunswick, hosting the "artspak" for ten years. She later wrote and directed two televisions documentaries for CBC's Opening Night, one on Bathurst pianist Ludmila Kneskova-Hussey; another, on the New Brunswick Youth Orchestra.

Before joining Moncton's Information Morning she hosted a popular book column on Shift.

You can listen to Lita's articulate and interesting discussion with Christine by clicking here, scroll down to the July 4th Interview and enjoy.

If you have something of interest about your project please contact me at jimlavoie@rogers.com and for a reasonable fee (nothing) it will be considered for inclusion in my Column. Please, as space is limited, make it brief and any potential War and Peace size renderings will be shipped to Joe Blades at Broken Jaw Press.

NB FILM CO-OP HERITAGE CONTEST

By Ashley Bursey for HERE

It's Fredericton's own set of 'heritage moments', a series of short vignettes exploring the city's meandering history and colourful characters.

The idea was proposed by the New Brunswick Film Co-op, which has created similar short films in the past. This time, they've got a dual celebration in mind: in 2009, Fredericton will be designated a Canadian Cultural Capital, and the Co-op will be feting 30 years in the province.

But don't worry if you don't have a laundry list of feature films under your belt. Tony Merzetti, executive director of the Co-op, says they just want the stories.  Memorable people, historic events, tall tales  and the Co-op will take the reins from there.

"We don't expect all people to be filmmakers," he says. "We know some people in this program might be filmmakers...but [right now, we just want] to get storytellers to tell a story. Those people can be involved in the process of making the film but we could as well pull together people from the Co-op to make the film.

"Making a film is a long process, so we figured we should get the ideas percolating as soon as possible and invite people from the community, "writers, researchers, storytellers, who have insight into Fredericton's past and present who have an interesting idea for a film."

The deadline is coming up fast: the Film Co-op hopes to see the majority of the entries by July 25, which will give them until 2009 to set up a series of short films. The pieces can range from one to ten minutes and cover a variety of subjects, anything interest-piquing and distinctly Frederictonian.

"It could be anything. It could be a person like Boss Gibson, part of the cultural fabric of Fredericton. He owned a cotton mill and played a huge role in building Marysville. Or there are people like [poet] Alden Nowlan. Artists and writers are obvious people as part of culture, but it spans a little bit into heritage, so stuff like [architect] John LeRoux is really doing a good job of bringing out."

He says it's all about the story, be it a biographical sketch, a snippet about the St. John River, or a local old wives' tale.

"The first thing is to come up with an interesting story, something that's significant to Fredericton. It's important to research it, so you find out things people don't generally know, so when they watch the film, they think, 'oh, I didn't know that'. If they're doing old stories, going to the library, checking with the provincial archives, checking what kind of material they have...

"It's as though you were writing a novel and it's a story about a forensic anthropologist. You'd want to know what the right words were so you could talk about the procedures...you want to know about the story so you can sort of coalesce all those facts into something interesting."

For first-time scriptwriters, Merzetti points them to the Internet to look at similar formats. He says the writer doesn't have to have any experience with movie-making, either. The Film Co-op will appoint a director, crew, actors, and editor for winning scripts, inviting the writer to hop onboard to learn.

"We expect it will be quite widely arrayed. We'll look at the stories and see which ones look really interesting," says Merzetti. "I don't think if the script isn't perfect, it will penalize someone if the story is really good. We want something specific...like a day in the life of someone who lived in the 1800s."

And he says for writers to let their imaginations soar. He'd love to spend time shooting on-location at King's Landing with period costumes, or exploring the life of children's character Maggie Mullins, created by Mary Granin.

Interested applicants can submit their proposals to the NB Film Co-op by July 25th: Mail: PO Box 1537, Fredericton, NB E3B 4Y1, or e-mail Tony Merzetti at info@nbfilmcoop.com if they have any questions.

MEMBER UPDATES, MEMBER UPDATES, MEMBER UPDATES

I have recently finished the production of a music video I did for a friend, Evan LeBlanc, called 'Different'. The song is written, played, and sung by Evan and reflects the real-life actions of cruelty in bullying. The song is a true story about an individual who attended our school. I have been involved with film projects through the Film Co-op and on my own for a couple years now but never attempted a music video; this seemed like a good opportunity to learn!

We recorded a demo with Film Co-op member/Music Producer Ralf Bindles in Pedicodiac about a month ago and then used one of the tracks to create a music video. I did the storyboard, directed, filmed, promoted and edited the project for Evan. We had a great time working on the video, just the two of us, and whenever I needed guidance, Tony, Cat, Michel and Mike were there to help me out and for that I'm grateful! Evan's video is climbing in local popularity and Ralf Bindles is trying to get a record deal and a market for Evan, I hope this works out for them!

I'd like to thank Ralf for all he has and will hopefully do for Evan and myself; he's been a real trooper. I leave for Toronto next week to attend Humber College for Film and Television Production; Thank you, thank you, thank you to all the Film Co-op members I've been in contact with, you have honestly helped me out in my future endeavors and given me something to look forward to in the industry I love, film.

I've also been notified that I secured a job in Toronto working in a studio for music video productions which I acquired through a friend, I hope that this lucky streak continues and best of luck to my fellow New Brunswick Film Co-op Members!

FREDERICTON - NOTABLE ACTS THEATRE FESTIVAL

July 22-August 2

The 2008 NotaBle Acts Theatre Festival opens July 22 and runs through August 2 at four venues in Fredericton. This year's festival features thirteen new plays by New Brunswick dramatists, including three main stage productions, free daytime street theatre, and free public readings of new works in development.

Opening the festival on July 22 and running nightly through July 26 at 8 PM at the Black Box Theatre, STU, is Chapel Arm by Step Taylor. Chapel Arm is a darkly complex and challenging drama, surprising both in its philosophical scope and emotional resonance. Dodi, a lawyer living in Toronto, returns to her childhood home of Chapel Arm Newfoundland, only to discover her ex-boyfriend engaged to a brutish woman. To make matters worse, her favorite uncle has burnt her family's old house to the ground. Feeling more than a little estranged, Dodi tries to understand how the town still seems
to hold such a strange power over her, one that makes her remember, one that makes her unable to leave.

Chapel Arm is directed by Montreal-based Rose Plotek, recent graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada directing programme, and stars Fredericton actors Robbie O'Neill, Marissa Robinson, and Leah Holder, along with Montreal's Greg Gale.

The festival's second week stages the winners of this year's NotaBle Acts playwriting contest. Acting Out, a double-bill of the two winners of the one act category of the contest, takes the stage at Memorial Hall, UNB, July 30-August 2, featuring Our Mouths
Are Filters by Kathleen Brown and Someone Else's Dream by Jeff Lloyd. Taking It To The Streets stages the five winners of the festival's ten minute play contest as an hour of free lunchtime theatre. Taking it to the Streets runs daily at noon in downtown
Fredericton's Barracks Square July 28-August 1 and features plays by Chris Campbell, Jordan Dashner, Jeremy Gorman, Chris Nyarady, and Brad O'Donnell. And Play Out Loud, running at 8 PM at Brewbakers Restaurant July 28 and 29, will feature free public
readings of five new plays.

Tickets for main stage shows are $15, $10 for students. For full schedule and ticket information, visit www.nbacts.com or call (506) 458-7406.

WRITERS, PRODUCERS BUY TIME

by: Etan Vlessing, Playback Daily
Jul 21, 2008

Knowing its has bigger fish to fry, the Writers Guild of Canada has extended its labor deal with Canadian producers for another year to the end of 2009.

WGC said Monday its members have ratified the extension of their current deal with the CFTPA and Quebec producers aligned with the APFTQ, which was to expire on Dec. 31. The new agreement will run to Dec. 31, 2009, and includes a 3% increase on the minimum script fee.

By the time the new agreement is re-negotiated in late 2009, the WGC ventures the industry's landscape could be much-changed after the upcoming CRTC hearings into new media and renewals of broadcast licenses for Global Television and CTV.

The WGC also wants to wait for the dust to settle on the pending terms of trade negotiations between Canadian producers and the broadcasters, and likely reforms to the Canadian Television Fund.

For its part, the CFTPA wants to avoid time-consuming and costly negotiations with the WGC, especially since both parties have a joint interest in securing a favorable outcome to upcoming CRTC hearings and negotiations with dominant broadcasters.

"All parties recognize that the collective bargaining process is time consuming and costly, and it was easy to agree that we would be far better to devote these resources to our common cause of improving the production landscape in Canada," John Barrack, national VP for the CFTPA, said in a statement.
