Spotlight!

AS SEEN FROM HERE

By Jim Lavoie

The Annual General Meeting for the NB Film Co-op was held last night in Doodles Cafe (Thank you Erin!) and finished at a record time of only 45 minutes! The meeting is basically a chance for Tony and the Board to report to the membership on the activities that have happened over the year and to do the annual elections for the board.

"This past year was a very productive year for the Film Co-op and everybody involved with the organization," said NB Film Co-op Executive Director Tony Merzetti.

"It was a year that was highlighted by many positive initiatives such as the Film Co-op's very first Film and Television Certificate Programme which started last year and finished this year with a mentor/student produced anthology series entitled Diplomatic Relations. The Diplomatic Relations films will make their debut at this year's Silver Wave Film Festival, Nov 13-16."

As the books were formally signed off for this year and Tony was thanked for his excellent accounting and management skills, President and active filmmaker Bunthiny Nou expressed her gratitude to the staff, board and all the active members. She also noted filmmaker-in -residence Michelle Lovegrove Thompson's excellent coordination of the Film Co-op's first Experimental Program as well as welcoming animator artist-in-residence Elise Simard from Montreal, who will be working at the Film Co-op on her second animation for several months.

Special Note: Film Co-op members Michel Guitard and his mother Denise Guitard recently suffered a tragedy in their family. Michel's younger brother, just 15 years old, was in a diving accident and was seriously injured and is in the hospital. Anyone who would like to help the family by sending them a card, running errands for them, dropping off a food dish etc..., please contact cat at: info@nbfilmcoop.com. Michel and his mom have done so much for the Film Co-op over the years, now it's our turn to help them.

The Board of Directors remains the same for this year and next and a good crowd was on hand for the AGM meeting and impromptu gathering at the Lunar Rogue afterwards.

Tic, Toc……the sound of the quickly approaching Silver Wave Film Festival deadline should be on everybody's mind...August 3rd filmmakers!

Sigh…The sound of relief of many members, as I won't be publishing photos from the great annual Film Co-op BBQ that happened on last Friday today but, …next week for sure!

HOLD THE PRESS! - NEW FREDERICTON MEMBER MATTHEW JENKINS

I am a 4th year Multi-Media Studies Major at UNB, I have worked on a few short films, all less than 3 minutes. As such I have a good understanding of design in video, sound and image.

I am principally interested in 3d animation, post production and special effects. I am proficient with a wide array of software and am always keen to learn more.

I have only ever worked with digital video cameras, however most of the work I do comes in the post production phase or in the realm of pure 3d animation.

What I would hope to work on in the film coop is post production effects as well as titling sequences, with that in mind I am interested in just about everything and like to get out in the field in any creative environment.

Software Proficiencies:

Adobe Photoshop CS 3 Sony Video Vegas 7
Adobe After Effects CS 3 Pixilogic Zbrush 3
Adobe Flash CS 3 AutoDesk Maya 8.5
Abode Illustrator CS 3

MEMBER UPDATES, MEMBER UPDATES, MEMBER UPDATES

Gretchen Kelbaugh is happy to be working on a 25-minute video for School District 6 on their "Celebrate What's Right with the World" program for mental health. Jobs like this pay for weenies and wine while she works on her current passion, "Menocracy", about women and politics. Does anyone have an "in" with Hillary Clinton, by the way?

Classic Feature Film -
Casablanca
1942

Length: 102 minutes

The classic and much-loved romantic melodrama Casablanca (1942), always found on top-ten lists of films, is a masterful tale of two men vying for the same woman's love in a love triangle. The story of political and romantic espionage is set against the backdrop of the wartime conflict between democracy and totalitarianism. [The date given for the film is often given as either 1942 and 1943. That is because its limited premiere was in 1942, but the film did not play nationally, or in Los Angeles, until 1943.]

With rich and smoky atmosphere, anti-Nazi propaganda, Max Steiner's superb musical score, suspense, unforgettable characters (supposedly 34 nationalities are included in its cast) and memorable lines of dialogue (e.g., "Here's lookin' at you, kid," and the inaccurately-quoted "Play it again, Sam"), it is one of the most popular, magical (and flawless) films of all time - focused on the themes of lost love, honor and duty, self-sacrifice and romance within a chaotic world.

VILLAGE HISTORIQUE ACADIEN TRANSFORMED INTO FILM SET

July 30, 2008

CARAQUET (CNB) - The Village Historique Acadien has become a film set for Spirit Cove, a 90-minute, made-for-television movie being produced by 3RB Productions of Miramichi.

With its authentic buildings, the village is an ideal setting for this historical fiction about two young people, Joel and Laura, who find love in Miramichi during the Acadian Expulsion. The story also follows their close friendship with a young Mi'kmaq boy who saves Joel's life, as well as the story of Sister Marie-Claire who arrives from France to help with the poor and elderly who are starving and ill.

"We are excited to have 3RB Productions and the cast and crew of Spirit Cove filming their movie at the village, " said Clarence Lebreton, assistant deputy minister of tourism and parks, which is responsible for the Village Historique Acadien. "The village is a celebration of the history of Acadians in New Brunswick, and using it as the backdrop for this movie gives us another opportunity to share our heritage with people across the country."

Spirit Cove is a story of survival, love, betrayal and murder, and a folklore that speaks of truth to many people of the Miramichi area. The movie is being produced by NB Film Co-op member Stephen McKinnon, directed by Jimmy MacKinley (Silver Wave award winner for acting), and was written by Bernie Colepaugh in collaboration with Ronald Mazerolle, Jim Stacey and Jimmy MacKinley. It will star many local actors, including Sean Sonier as Joel, Allyson Paradis as Laura, and Chantel Letrud as Sister Marie-Claire.

"Recreating the way of life, the buildings, and the dress styles in a period piece is very difficult, time-consuming and costly," said McKinnon. "We are thrilled to be able to film several of the scenes for Spirit Cove at the Village Historique Acadien. It is the perfect setting to capture the look and feel of New Brunswick during the time of the Acadian Expulsion."

Filming started on Tuesday, July 29, and will continue at the village over the next couple of weeks.

TALKS ON RIGHTS MOVING SLOWLY

by Etan Vlessing, Playback Daily.com
Jul 29, 2008

Landmark negotiations between indie producers and broadcasters aimed at hammering out a program-rights agreement have yet to move beyond talks about talks.

After a week, negotiators for the CFTPA and conventional broadcasters are still struggling to agree on a framework for the negotiations that, ultimately, are intended to settle long-standing disagreements about rights and payment in new media.

The conventional broadcasters want to negotiate as a single grouping, while the producers want parallel talks, with the CBC and each private broadcaster at a separate table. The CFTPA reps also unveiled "principles" that underpin forthcoming concrete proposals on how to define and value ancillary rights.

The economic stakes in the dispute are enormous as producers and conventional broadcasters, both of which have a hand in the old broadcast world, attempt to find new audiences and advertising revenues on the digital frontier.

For that reason, CFTPA EVP John Barrack says the current terms-of-trade negotiations are designed as more of a summit in want of an agreement, rather than as divisive contract talks.

"This is not a labor negotiation. This is a partnership. But partners have to have a degree of equality, otherwise there's no partnership," says Barrack.

The thorny issue of new media rights led to ACTRA's strike last year, and to the Hollywood writers strike that followed stateside. The current contract talks between the major studios and the Screen Actors Guild are similarly hung up over new media residual rights.

The terms-of-trade talks also come as conventional broadcasters have seen their traditional business model undermined by the Internet and audience fragmentation. As a result, they have attempted to claw back lost viewership by acquiring rights to the web and other emerging digital windows and platforms.

Producers complain that broadcasters are doing so with blanket licences; that they short-change program creators and treat them as little more than service producers. Broadcasters insist that a business model for new media product has yet to emerge, which hampers attempts to value ancillary rights.

The fact that both sides are even talking about an agreement on new media rates is down to the CRTC, which has urged the broadcasters and producers to meet each other halfway to forge a final deal.

The terms of trade talks are set to resume next week.
