Spotlight!

Over the next few weeks, we will introduce all six short film venture recipients for 2008 to give you a look at their background and the stories that they have written and will be shooting this year.

INTRODUCING TWO MORE OF THE CALLING CARD FILMMAKERS FOR 2008:

RALPH PRITCHARD

Film Specs
Title: Forever Lost
Producer/Director/Writer: Ralph Pritchard
Length of project: 10 minutes
Format: HD
Genre: Supernatural thriller

Synopsis: After two dramatic shorts and one documentary Ralph Pritchard decided it was time for a light comedy so, after taking part in a 12 week theatric training class and playing in 2 full production plays he sat down to write his comedy. One of his goals was to cast most of his new acting class friends and with them in mind came the supernatural thriller script about a middle-aged scientist who dies suddenly in a car crash seemingly as a result of the inattentiveness of the driver…his wife.

He soon discovers that he is caught between life and the afterlife when his previously deceased daughter appears at the scene of the accident to guide him through the process of passing on.

While watching his own funeral unfold he realizes that his long time friend and business partner has been neither. Through the assistance of his spirit daughter and a medium he struggles to warn his wife and family not realizing that his spirit daughter isn’t all that she purports herself to be. The husband is led on a roller coaster journey, darting in and out of being forever lost in the dark side of the afterlife all the while struggling to get a message to his wife.

At the point where all hope is lost everything appears to be resolved only to become unraveled by forces more horrid than your worst nightmare.

A script breakdown revealed 52 special effects which will be created using Adobe After Effects, Trapcode Particular and FXHome. Looks like an advanced special effects course could be coming to the Co-op next year...and um, maybe the comedy too.

You can read the script at http://www.jaba.net/fl

TIM RAYNE

Film Specs
Title: Hopewell
Producer/Director/Writer: Tim Rayne
Length of project: 10 minutes
Format: 16mm
Genre: Drama

Synopsis: The story follows central protagonist David, a mechanic who has worked fulltime at his uncle's garage since he was 15 years old. After his parents' untimely death, David has become a recluse, rarely engaging with others and never leaving his uncle's garage where he eats, sleeps, and works.

David, who is in his mid-30s, has entirely disconnected himself from the rest of the world, and lives in the images of the postcards he collects of New Brunswick destinations that he has placed on the wall of his work space in the garage. The film is an exploration of David's struggles to gain personal freedom and independence

Tim Rayne is a proud Frederictonian who has been a long standing member of the New Brunswick Film Co-op. Tim recently moved back from Ottawa (where he was getting his masters) with his wife Nathalie (also a Co-op member and filmmaker) to continue his interest in producing films set in the Province. He previously produced two other films at the Film Co-op, Soup du Jour and Natural Remedy, that have screened at festivals across Canada. Tim currently works at the ‘Centre for Arts and Technology’ and is happy to be making films with his friends in New Brunswick.

Ralph and Tim each received a grant to produce their calling card short film through the Short Film Venture Program. NB Film gives out the much needed cash component of the grant and the New Brunswick Filmmakers' Co-operative provides the full complimentary professional equipment package, volunteer member crew resources as well as post production facility access.

HOLD THE PRESS! - NEW MONCTON MEMBER LINE PELLETIER

Line was born in Edmundston and is bilingual. She started  dancing ballet and Tap at 4 years old and just loved performing even at that young age. She competed in the Miss Maine Potato Blossom Pageant and won. After the pageant, she then started modeling locally in Edmundston.

From there, Line went to Military College in Kingston Ontario where she studied Communications and Electronics. After she got out of the military, she moved to Fredericton NB where she studied cosmetology. During this time, Line competed in hairstyling competitions and won.

Then the stars aligned and film became a part of her life. The production of the film A Midwife's Tale came to Kings Landing, and because Line had won the hair competition, her teacher sent her to help out with hair and make-up for the production. After that great experience, Line moved to Montreal and started taking acting classes and was represented by the talent and modeling agency of Sibyll Sasse and Constance Brown.

Line's first acting gig with them was a Trident commercial, and her second one was as Ann Archer's stand in and body double in The Art of War .

I really enjoy the form because it's so free.  The only thing
limiting the animator is imagination.

CHRIS GILES

I just finished a multi-media show over the weekend, "Uranium and Uranus", a dance, video and music performance with lots of spinning, dancing on ladders and uranium mining. Good practice for the upcoming shoot at the end of July. I am now working steadily on new film "Birth of a Nicola". Still slaving away in pre-production with espresso in hand.

The casting call went out a few weeks ago for auditions on June 18th at the public library. I look forward to seeing the talent that appears.

Just got the call, the film stock is in. Can't wait to check it out. This will be a tricky shoot as the film involves stop motion animations, and lots of in camera special effects. I'll be shooting 16mm B&W reversal film and hand processing it myself. Will be GONZO for the next few months with this project for sure.

I'm also prepping up some musical compositions; I hope to have live music playing while I shoot some of the intense interior scenes. Think belly dancing Dombek and grinding potato chip factory sounds along with exploding genetically altered potato fantasy babies. Welcome to "Birth of a Nicola".

WORDS OF MY PERFECT TEACHER
Directed by Lesley Ann Patten, 2003, 101 min

From the World Cup to the mythical mountain kingdom of Bhutan, Words Of My Perfect Teacher follows three students on a quest they hope will lead to wisdom. The catch is the teacher. Soccer obsessed, charismatic filmmaker and citizen of the world: Dzongsar Khyentse Norbu. Featuring appearances by Bernardo Bertolucci and Steven Seagal. Filmed in the UK, Bhutan, Canada, the US, and in Germany at the World Cup. Set to a world beat with music by Sting, Joy Drop, Steve Tibbetts, U. Man. Tek and others. Words Of My Perfect Teacher is a poignant and hilarious tale of students who follow a teacher that defies convention.

Words Of My Perfect Teacher was made during the course of a year that included attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, months of tension as India and Pakistan went to the brink of nuclear war, multiple suicide bombings in Israel, a stock market drop that plunged the world to new depths of economic uncertainty and the US war on Iraq. If ever there was a time to inspire students to "wake up" and learn the wisdom necessary to engage in compassionate activity, this was that year.

FLUTTER
Directed by Howie Shia 2006, 6 min 52 sec

How big is the world? Searching for an answer, a young boy waves goodbye to his classmates, hops the schoolyard fence and disappears into the city, swallowed by the din and decadence of its machines and masses and automobiles. In Flutter, award-winning artist and illustrator Howie Shia marries traditional and digital media with a mish-mash score of jazz, electronics and sampling to create an urban fairy tale that sets to reclaim the contemporary world as fertile ground for epic adventure and romance.
