Spotlight!
DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS EDITORS AT WORK
BUNTHIVY NOU, EDITOR (BUTTERFLY BROACH)
So when I was little I used to take things apart and put them back together... well… not really, but I do now. And editing to some degree is kinda like that. I’ve been a member of the NB Film Co-op since 2003 and have worked on a number of productions doing a number of roles. I realized early on that I was a lot more engaged in those roles that allowed me to be involved in the creative storytelling aspect of filmmaking – writing, directing, acting, editing. So when I had to pick my two concentrations that are not ‘above-the-line’ in the Certificate program, I knew picture editing would be one.
During the pre and production phase of Diplomatic Relations, I was mainly busy with either camera trainee work (my other concentration) or with directing ‘Hide and Seek’. This is my first time editing other people’s work and I quite like it. There’s certainly a lot more to editing than cut, cut, fade-in, fade-out, and God forbid, silly transitions. If I’ve learned anything about editing, it’s to keep the good and throw out the bad. I watch, I listen, and try to find the story’s rhythms and beats. What’s great is when I can enhance the story further through editing. It’s challenging work. It’s fun work, tedious… oh so tedious, but rewarding when I can sit down and watch a scene come together in front of me.

Diplomatic Relations
After patiently attending a year's worth of workshops on camera, sound, directing, etc. as part of the NB Film Co-op Certificate in Film & Television Programme, the time finally came for the hands-on training.
I found myself in a quandary when selecting my roles. From the day I applied, my interest was solely in post-production so I mulled over my options and chose to spend half of my training hours in pre-production and the remaining half in post-production. I wasn't able to spend a lot of time on set for Diplomatic Relations due to my role as Production Manager trainee, so I didn't form any emotional attachment to particular shooting days or specific takes because I was too preoccupied with the budget, the schedule and crewing each of the days. Getting to know some of the mentors during the slightly more relaxed pre-production phase rather than the hectic on set days is something I'm very grateful to have taken away from the experience.
That distance from set was crucial since I’m now in the trio of Editors for the project, and have to juggle the best takes to try to come up with the best combination of shots to bring one of the three stories to life.
Hide & Seek is the shortest story of the Diplomatic Relations trilogy and while it may be lacking in running time, it certainly makes up for it in poignancy. To be on a project from the first production meeting and worrying about everything from snowstorms to crew availability, to spending late nights in the edit suite after even Cat and Tony have gone home, is a unique and valuable experience that I highly recommend.

FREDERICTON - A CULTURAL CAPITAL PROJECT
Introduction
For 2009, the Department of Canadian Heritage has designated Fredericton as a Cultural Capital of Canada. The City has partnered with several groups to undertake cultural activities next year and the New Brunswick Filmmakers’ Co-operative is excited to be among the groups participating.
The New Brunswick Film Co-op is celebrating its 30th anniversary next year. It is looking forward to undertaking an exciting community-based film project that will not only help mark the occasion, but leave a lasting legacy.
The theme of the project is Fredericton: A Cultural Capital.
The Project
Between August 2008 and the end of 2009, the Film Co-op will produce 10 short film and video projects. The films will run between one and ten minutes in length. The productions will be dramatic, documentary, animated or a combination of styles.
Topics can include but are not limited to: biographical sketches of notable Frederictonians, significant historical events, multicultural and Aboriginal stories, inventors, tall tales, the St. John River, the arts, built heritage, politics, organizations etc.
Scripts Wanted
Over June and July 2008, the Co-op is inviting the public to submit short scripts that define Fredericton as a cultural capital. You do not have to be a filmmaker to submit a script. Historians, storytellers, artists, anyone with a good story is welcome to participate.
It is expected that the script should describe a story in some detail, rather than suggesting a topic on which to base a film. The story could explore the connection between Fredericton’s past and present and could consider aspects of its culture and heritage in a local and global context. The content of the films should be suitable for a general audience.
Although the project is set in Fredericton, it is open to all residents of New Brunswick. Fredericton is the Provincial Capital and as such belongs to all New Brunswickers alike.

Deadline is now July 25.

Everything is going really well here in Australia. The family I'm staying with is awesome, and I'm having a great time. This place is absolutely beautiful, it's almost impossible to have a bad view of anything here.
The temperature is just perfect every day, 15-20 degrees all the time, but still I'm starting to miss everyone back home. So I'll keep you posted on my adventures and can't wait to see you guys again soon!

It’s Big D here, and busy as ever! I recently taught the acting and improvisation workshop. I really enjoyed the participation level of everyone who attended. bravo! The workshop was modeled from a theatre workshop I attended last October in Saint Quentin. All the French community theatre groups are invited, including Fredericton’s own “Les Fous de la scène” (trans: Crazy for Stage)
This year marks the 15th anniversary of the theatre group’s existence. TVA, a French channel, will be conducting in depth interviews with its current members next week! As we didn’t present in this year’s community theatre festival in Shippagan last May, it comes as a wonderful surprise TVA would cover our merry little theatre group.
We will try to come back into the presenter's rotation with a strong play next year in Saint John, as this year in Shippagan, there were a lot of really good presentations. Campbellton had a hilarious play; St-Quentin had an elaborate set and décor, Miramichi also stood out, just to name a few. Fredericton in 2007 in Neguac took home five awards. Including best play, best direction (Daniel Lessard) and best supporting actress (Rebekah Chassé)
http://www.cpscnb.com/cpsc/index.cfm?id=3076
With a few representatives of les Fous de la scène, I assisted the 2008 festival to support our other Acadian theatre groups. We are in competition with one another but you wouldn't know it by how much fun we have together!
As Diane Gauthier, a long time member of Les Fous de la scène, observed: "We would have had stiff competition if we presented this year!"
The same week Les Fous de la scène presented Coup sur Coup in Fredericton, I co-produced and acted in Pierre Huard's "The Clean-Up." It was Pierre's original idea we put down on paper as co-writers and collaborated to assemble team "Blood Shed" (pending title change) and recruited new people to the madness.
With Pierre's experience and Michel Guitard's vision as the camera guy. (have fun in New Zealand, you lucky bugger!) They were able to shoot an entire day without me on set... well that's not true, as I donned the costume and got bloodied up hours before the play time. Then I washed my blood soaked belly in an abandoned church near the altar, it's deconsecrated so I don't think I accidentally performed a Black Mass in any manner. On the drive back to Fredericton, I noticed in the rear view mirror my teeth were still stained red! luckily I brought a kit with me with mouthwash to rinse the fake blood off my teeth. Otherwise I would have had to play a jealous half naked vampire husband in Coup sur Coup.
Right now I'm gearing up for the project Ask Ug happening later this summer and writing material for a stand-up routine and a feature film.

FREDERICTON - ASIAN HERITAGE SOCIETY OF NB PRESENTS
ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL SPECIAL SCREENING EVENT

Some Kind of Arrangement
Directed by Ali Kazimi 1998, 46 min
Preety is the quintessential woman of the 90s: confident, independent and career-driven. But she's about to do something most of her contemporaries would never consider--the 20-something accountant is preparing to enter into an arranged marriage. Focusing on three second-generation South Asians--Preety, Hanif and Rajni--Some Kind of Arrangement is a smart, stylish and thoughtful examination of an age-old tradition in the midst of being adapted and transformed in North America. Engaging and refreshingly candid in their opinions, the three young people make it clear that arranged marriages aren't what they used to be. Nowadays, they involve negotiation, beginning with introductory phone calls and matrimonial classifieds in East Indian community newspapers, and continuing with long-distance trips, lengthy get-to-know-each-other sessions and the option of saying "no."
The Tibetan Book of the Dead: A Way of Life
Directed byYukari Hayashi, Barrie McLean 1994, 46 min
Narrated by Leonard Cohen
This film explores ancient teachings on death and dying. It was filmed over a four-month period on location in the Himalayas where the original text still yields an essential influence over people's views of life and death. A Way of Life contains footage of the rites and liturgies surrounding and following the death of a Ladakhi elder. The Dalai Lama explains his own feelings about death. This film, narrated by Leonard Cohen which reveals ancient teachings on how to think about death and dying, can be a valuable source of counsel and comfort.

FREDERICTON - BARD IN THE BARRACKS presents Shakespeare’s AS YOU LIKE IT
From June 19-29 Barracks Square in downtown Fredericton will be overrun every night by new-age eco-hippies, skateboard-riding hipsters, and leather-clad punks, with the odd Goth and Emo kid thrown in for good measure, all of them declaiming … Shakespeare. Oh, and you may also spot a live sheep or two.
It can only mean one thing: Bard in the Barracks is back. The third annual edition of Fredericton’s popular outdoor Shakespeare production, produced in partnership by Theatre UNB and the NotaBle Acts Theatre Company, this year features As You Like It, one of Shakespeare’s most loved comedies. The story of a group of exiles from a tyrannical state who find knowledge, romance, and a happier life in the magical Forest of Arden As You Like It has a decided counterculture spirit. This production features a colourful retro-60s staging that updates the play with references to contemporary celebrity culture, environmental themes, and the recent skateboard law controversy.
Audiences will also be treated to a memorable wrestling match, some of Shakespeare’s most stirring verse (including the famous “All the world’s a stage” speech), and the Bard’s largest female role in the character of the free-spirited Rosalind, whose cross-dressed pursuit of the handsome Orlando provides the play’s main plotline.
The production is directed by UNB theatre professor Len Falkenstein, with live music by some of Fredericton’s favorite musicians, led by Kelly Waterhouse and members of Vetch, who will perform original versions of the play’s many songs.
New this year is a 7:30 start time and bleacher seating to enhance the viewing experience. As You Like It will be performed Thursday, June 19-Sunday June 22 & Tuesday June 24-Sunday June 29 at 7:30 nightly in Barracks Square (corner of Carleton and Queen streets). Tickets are $12 regular, $8 for students, and free for children under 12, and are available at the door or in advance at River Valley Crafts. The June 24th performance will be pay-what-you-can. The show will be cancelled in case of rain at show time, with tickets honoured for subsequent performances (no shows will be added). Patrons should dress for the weather and are encouraged to bring a seat cushion or blanket. For more information call 458-7406, e-mail nbacts@unb.ca or visit www.nbacts.com
