Spotlight!
IN MEMORY - FRED CLARKE, FIDDLEHEAD FILMS
by Tony Merzetti
Fred was one of the original founding members of the New Brunswick Filmmakers Co-op in 1979. He was the owner of Fiddlehead Films, a film production company that had offices down the hall from the Co-op's former space at 51 York Street.
Fred was a larger-than-life figure. He towered over you when you met him in person. He had a deep resonant voice and a white Santa Claus beard. He also had a passion for storytelling and filmmaking.
When I first joined the Film Co-op in 1983 I was "between jobs" and Fred offered me work in the editing room. I assisted Whitman Trecartin and another editor on a couple of film projects. The editors always complained that Fred didn't give them enough time to do the work, and that there was always a deadline pressing. Fred never seemed concerned about deadlines, and I remember extended lunch hours at the Rolling Keg where Fred would buy extra rounds of beer for all but no food. It didn't seem to affect Fred, but for the rest of us it became very difficult as we staggered around the editing room looking for bits of film that had fallen to the bottom of the film bin.
At night, Fred would take us to his home in Woodstock for huge steak dinners and more beer and keep us up to all hours with amazing stories of adventures on tall ships and shoots in the Isle of Skye and other places. Fred seemed to operate on a couple of hours sleep while the rest of dragged our feet the next day.
When the editing was completed, we would pack up all the picture and sound elements for the films. We would then all pile into Fred's car for the drive to Toronto. At that time, PFA Labs was a principal place that filmmakers did their lab work and sound mixes. Steve Mayhew, a sound engineer there remembers how Fred would take over the lab when he was there. All departments were on standby for Fred's next request. He might need a new line of dialogue placed into the sound track or the colour timer might have to change something right away. It was a whirlwind of activity. All other customer's work was put on standby. And of course there were the compulsory visits to the pubs for extended lunches at the lab's expense.
Some of the best adventures with Fred were on special visits by the Queen or the Pope. Fred would hold court with the international media and tell stories of how he jabbed a particularly rude newsman in the leg with the metal tip of his tripod to great laughter by all.
Fred was very successful at getting government support for his company. He had contracts from several Departments from the Conservative Government of the day. At one point, he was holding Friday afternoon socials at his office and everyone who was anyone in government attended. At the height of his success, he had a huge contract for Atlantic Lotto, and was shooting several other films simultaneously.
One particularly funny story about Fred concerned the payment of a bill. Cash flow is a problem for all filmmakers and Fred was no exception. One day, a supplier phoned Fred to demand immediate payment of an outstanding bill. Fred hemmed and hawed and eventually called out to his accountant in the next room. "Doug did you send that cheque to so and so." Fred then mumbled something into the phone as if Doug was replying. Fred then told the supplier that Doug had said the cheque was in the mail. The supplier informed Fred that it was curious that Doug had told him that, as Doug was sitting in front of him at HIS office.
Eric Bagnell always got a chuckle at how Fred would make the grand entrance. On one shoot, the crew had driven from Fredericton to Sussex for a shoot. Fred arrived by helicopter and had the pilot land in front of the hotel to the utter surprise of the employees who taken aback by the dramatic arrival. They thought someone really important must have landed there. It was Fred.
I know the people who worked with him like Eric Bagnell, John DeWitt, Doug Rodway and others will be saddened to hear of his passing. He was a pioneer in building a film industry in New Brunswick and he helped members of the Co-op and for that we are appreciative. He was definitely one of the more colourful characters in the province and will be remembered by all who knew him.
CLARKE, GEORGE FREDERICK George Clarke of Upper Woodstock passed away at Upper River Valley Hospital on Sunday, June 22, 2008, at the age of 81. Fred was born in Toronto, Ont, son of the late Dr. George Frederick and Mary (Shubert) Clarke. He is survived by his wife Dorothy (Botsford) Clarke; two sons George Frederick Clarke and his wife Karin of Calgary, AB; Robin Clarke and his wife Donna of Victoria BC; and one daughter Joan Rossetti of Boston Mass; several grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Fred was predeceased by two sisters, Jane S. Bernard and Mary E. Homer. Resting at The Scott Funeral Home, 815 Main Street, Woodstock, NB,.with visiting on Wednesday from 7 to 9pm. Funeral Service will be held on Thursday at 11:00am from St. Luke's Anglican Church, Rev. Jane Arnott will be officiating, with interment in the Upper Woodstock cemetery.

The NB Film Co-op is hopping these days as the return of summer fires up production activity all over the province within the membership.
There are some very interesting and novel ideas and projects in pre-production and production phase now and throughout the year. From Saint John based filmmaker Richard McQueen's "Dead To the World", to Short Film Venture award recipients Britany Sparrow (The Morning After), Joel Thompson (Ugly), Ralph Pritchard (Forever Lost), Gyu Kang (White Envelope), Tim Rayne (Hopewell), as well as all the other Co-op member projects, everyone is crewed up and ready to roll.
To all the filmmakers, always remember your cast and crew are equal in value and your best assets.
MARITIME WRITER'S WORKSHOP
I think most of us have, at one time or another had the urge to compose or document their feelings/experience in print. Some have acted on that urge while others have taken the protagonist approach. Well, your chance to enhance your writing skills or take the initial plunge is coming in July as the revamped Maritime Writers Workshop 2008 offers up a plethora of workshops including Fiction writing, Poetry/Spoken Word, Travel writing, Internet & E-Publishing, Documentary Writing, Literary Translation, Editing, and Cyberpunk & Sci-Fi. The instructors, well known published experts will get your writing skills up to speed.
In addition to the workshops there are one-on-one consultation sessions, Free daily public readings, Free Small Press Publisher's Fair and the opportunity to interact with your writing peers.
This all happens in Fredericton July 6-12 so go to: http://www.cel.unb.ca/pers_cult/writers/index.php for more information, registration details, and everything you wanted to know about writing but were afraid to ask.

Bringing a fresh look to
the way artworks are displayed
to the public, Books Handmade is a local publisher
that creates and complies
pieces of Canadian art into a traditional book form complete with a sewn binding, while using the modern Internet. “It’s important that creative people have as much access to getting their stuff
out to the public as possible,” said Peter Evanchuck, publisher of Books Handmade.
“Very few artists or creative people want to keep their creative work hidden in the closet. This offers all an outlet and the Web offers us a means of getting it shown and seen.”
Currently their book, Pages of Canada, has many contributions from Ottawa artists. Producing four titles in total over the past year including children’s stories and Canadian art analogies, sales for the company has seen 300 books sold and interest generated from south of the border as well. Local painter Margaret Chwialkoska, who has a submission in Pages of Canada, agrees that the books are a great avenue for artists to create awareness of their works.
“For art, any type of exposure is important because we have little of it,” she explained. “I’m happy to have one of my images of art out there for others to see and I get tremendous satisfaction from it. There’s so few means to show artwork to the public and galleries only have so many spaces. It’s a big deal and it makes me proud.”
With 30 years experience in the editing and publishing industry, Mr. Evanchuck was also the editor and publisher of Canada’s only film
and theatre magazine called Motion, which ran out of Toronto. In partnership with Helene Lacelle’s illustrations, he ignited the idea for the company after his battle with throat cancer. “The tumor was too large for the throat surgeon to remove so a thoracic surgical team split open my chest and removed the cancer, but it’s a lifelong concern,” he said. “I’m no longer all that strong so, while I recover, I decided once again to start publishing Canadian creative stuff and started with some of my own.” Books Handmade stays true to its name, creating each book as its own work of art with colourful pages, personalized inscriptions
and made from recycled materials. The environmental friendly aspect is also maintained through the books being delivered by bicycle within the area as Mr. Evanchuck said he has been an avid cyclist all his life.
“To me, it’s such a great idea; the fact that Pages of Canada is put together with spontaneous pieces of writing, art, stories, and poems from random people across the country into a handmade book that is wonderfully made,” said Ms. Chwialkoska. “I found it fascinating and never heard of anything like it.”
While located in Ottawa, Books Handmade has taken full advantage of the Internet to gain exposure as well as submissions from artists
across the country. “The way for a small publisher to go is to use the Internet rather than the old fashioned way of marketing and sales since the distributors, sellers, and all the middle people take too much of the moola,” said Mr. Evanchuck.” With valued books dating back to medieval times still in existence and under museum
lock and key, Pages of Canada and the rest of the collection offer a piece of Canadiana to treasure. “When you look back at history, these handmade books existed in a variety of genres and became collector items now,” said Ms. Chwialkoska.
“In time, these books could have monetary value too.” Whether an emerging or well seasoned artist, Books Handmade offers a unique take on both the publishing and art worlds. “We are a publisher of slim books for big minds,” explained Mr. Evanchuck.
Currently, the company is looking for more submissions
for the next year’s edition of Pages of Canada. For more information or to purchase a book, visit

FREDERICTON - BARD IN THE BARRACKS presents Shakespeare’s AS YOU LIKE IT
From June 19-29 Barracks Square in downtown Fredericton will be overrun every night by new-age eco-hippies, skateboard-riding hipsters, and leather-clad punks, with the odd Goth and Emo kid thrown in for good measure, all of them declaiming … Shakespeare. Oh, and you may also spot a live sheep or two.
It can only mean one thing: Bard in the Barracks is back. The third annual edition of Fredericton’s popular outdoor Shakespeare production, produced in partnership by Theatre UNB and the NotaBle Acts Theatre Company, this year features As You Like It, one of Shakespeare’s most loved comedies. The story of a group of exiles from a tyrannical state who find knowledge, romance, and a happier life in the magical Forest of Arden As You Like It has a decided counterculture spirit. This production features a colourful retro-60s staging that updates the play with references to contemporary celebrity culture, environmental themes, and the recent skateboard law controversy.
Audiences will also be treated to a memorable wrestling match, some of Shakespeare’s most stirring verse (including the famous “All the world’s a stage” speech), and the Bard’s largest female role in the character of the free-spirited Rosalind, whose cross-dressed pursuit of the handsome Orlando provides the play’s main plotline.
The production is directed by UNB theatre professor Len Falkenstein, with live music by some of Fredericton’s favorite musicians, led by Kelly Waterhouse and members of Vetch, who will perform original versions of the play’s many songs.
New this year is a 7:30 start time and bleacher seating to enhance the viewing experience. As You Like It will be performed Thursday, June 19-Sunday June 22 & Tuesday June 24-Sunday June 29 at 7:30 nightly in Barracks Square (corner of Carleton and Queen streets). Tickets are $12 regular, $8 for students, and free for children under 12, and are available at the door or in advance at River Valley Crafts. The June 24th performance will be pay-what-you-can. The show will be cancelled in case of rain at show time, with tickets honoured for subsequent performances (no shows will be added). Patrons should dress for the weather and are encouraged to bring a seat cushion or blanket. For more information call 458-7406, e-mail nbacts@unb.ca or visit www.nbacts.com

OSCAR-NOMINATED PRODUCER BILL VINCE DIES AT 44
VANCOUVER — Vancouver movie producer Bill Vince has died of cancer at the age of 44.
Vince was nominated for an Academy Award in 2007 for producing Capote, a biography of American writer Truman Capote that saw Phillip Seymour Hoffman win an Oscar for best actor.
In a statement, Hoffman said Vince wore his heart on his sleeve, was attracted to passion and stood by Hoffman, something the actor says he'll never forget.
Vince and his brother Robert formed Infinity Features and produced such films as Snow Walker, Saved, Bullet Proof Heart and the Air Bud series.
Bill Vince was also active on the social front, helping implement and fund drug-addiction treatment programs for young people on Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, and redeveloping an abandoned theatre in the neighbourhood.
He is survived by his wife, Cynthia Miles, and three children, Miles, Michaela, and Nathanial.

MIRAMICHI - JALLOO FESTIVAL OF ANIMATION AND GAMES
The Jalloo Festival of Animation and Games was held June 11-12 in Miramichi NB. This event brought together hundreds of professionals from all over the globe to discuss and encourage the growth and development of the Animation and Game industry.
Over 200 attendees representing Canada, the US, Germany, and even Iceland took part in the Festival activities. Experts who have worked in film (Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Golden Compass, Star Trek II) , animated features (the Incredibles, the Haunted Village, the Care Bears Movie, Legend of Mulan), TV (Babar, Ewoks, Tiny Toons, Razzberry Jazzberry Jam) and games (Matrix: Path of Neo, GTA San Andreas, Tony Hawk Project 8, Elder Scrolls IV) were able to lend their expertise in topics ranging from the current state of the industry to how to go from a game concept to a published game.
In addition, 60 students graduating from Animation, 3D, Game Programming, and the Advanced Diploma (includes students from the other three programs as well as Graphic Design and Electronics Engineering) programs were on hand to display their abilities for expert feedback and potential employment.
The strong industry attendence even inspired a presentation involving municiple, provincial, and federal government business-oriented agencies on how to create or move a business to the Miramichi region.
"The Miramichi was built upon the lumber industry for generations; now that is dying out or at least severely downsizing and changing, the region needs a new focus." says Brian McGee, Jalloo Organizer and Instructor in the Electronic Game Design program at NBCC Miramichi. "With over 10 years of producing Animation and Game graduates, the experience is already here; game and animation companies are starting to build up in the region and we want to continue that growth."
With the success of Jalloo this year, with generous sponsorship from host NBCC (New Brunswick Community College) Miramichi campus, as well as several government departments, and corporations, another Jalloo is already being planned for next year.
