NB Film Co-op

THE SHORT FILM VENTURE RECIPIENT FILMMAKERS FOR 2008!

NBFC E-news - Thur, June 5, 2008

Spotlight!

Over the next few weeks, we will introduce all six short film venture recipients for 2008 to give you a look at their background and the stories that they have written and will be shooting this year.

INTRODUCING THREE OF THE CALLING CARD FILMMAKERS FOR 2008:

BRITANY SPARROW

Film Specs
Title: The Morning After
Producer/Director/Writer: Britany Sparrow
Length of project: 10 minutes
Format: 16mm
Genre: Comedy

Synopsis: This comedic story follows Martin, a clean cut well mannered university student who, under the influence of his frat boy roommate Karl, goes out partying and wakes up with amnesia about the night before. His situation worsens as he realizes Amanda, the girl standing at the foot of the bed wearing just a towel, has no recollection of the previous night's events either. Jeff scrambles to put the pieces back together before his girlfriend Paige shows up and catches him with Amanda.

Britany Sparrow is a BC born filmmaker who moved to Fredericton searching for something more. She found it in the New Brunswick Filmmakers' Co-operative when she volunteered on fellow Co-op member Joel Thompson's feature horror film "They Didn't Make It." Since then, Brit has been an active Film Co-op member, working on over a dozen films in her short time as a member. She most often fills the role of production manager or script supervisor, and has also done some work as actor, assistant director, and locations manager. Brit also directed a short digital video project entitled "The Perfect Cliche" which premiered at the Silver Wave Film Festival in 2007.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

GYU KANG

Film Specs
Title: White Envelope
Producer/Director/Writer: J. Gyu Kang
Length of project: 10 minutes
Format: HD
Genre: Drama

Synopsis: This story follows UKE-KYO and his struggles with a web of corruption surrounding him and his family. On the surface, UKE-KYO is like every other kid his age. He is a tiny, wide eyed Korean boy. But his big city surroundings are anything but quiet. Even silent white envelopes speak volumes.

First of all, thank you so very much to New Brunswick Film and to the NB Film Co-op! The Short Film Venture Program means I can follow my passion for filmmaking - I am very excited to produce White Envelope with a great crew and cast.

My interest in film and production began almost ten years ago with a career at a model/talent agency in Seoul. It was a great experience that opened my eyes to the world behind the camera. My fascination with movies grew throughout my university career at Kosin University (Busan), where I became involved with the direction of the university photography club and completed my degree in Biology and English. During my career in ESL teaching (2003-2006), I frequented nearby film festivals (such as PIFF) and researched the film industry in South Korea and beyond.

After traveling from Korea to China to Thailand to India, my girlfriend Laura and I settled in Fredericton in August of 2006, and I completed UNB courses in International Development and Anthropology.

I was lucky to have found the NB Film Co-op last year and joined as a member. Along with completing NBFC's new Certificate Program in Film and Television, I completed courses at UNB in Film and Video Production. I recently finished the short film project Pray, My Children with fantastic support from the NB Film Co-op, Johnny Endeavor Productions, and an excellent crew and cast (Jonathon Driscoll, Joe Blades and Laura Pearson to mention three of them). My films have themes of multiculturalism and issues surrounding (im-) migration running through them.

I am so ready to make films; thanks for your support!

-----------------------------------------------------------------

JOEL THOMPSON

Film Specs
Title: UGLY
Producer/Director/Writer: Joel Thompson
Length of project: 10 minutes
Format: 35mm
Genre: Drama

Synopsis:  This story takes a look at the way the world views beauty through the eyes of a blind man who has just regained his sight.

Joel Thompson has been making films in New Brunswick for over 15 years. Initially it began with a home camera and has now grown substantially. His works include, short films, four of which were screened at the Silver Wave Film Festival, "Shoes", "Man against fly", and "Breakdown" which were digital and one which he wrote, directed and edited on 16mm, "Waiting for Myra" and a feature horror film which opened the Silver Wave Film Festival last year to a sold out crowd, "They Didn't Make it". The feature film gained Joel attention with news paper articles, radio and  TV interviews including the Daily Gleaner, Telegraph Journal, North side news, Here Magazine, CTV, Rogers, CBC, CKTP, CHSR and Capital FM.

Joel recently completed directing one of three shorts for the NB Film Co-op's Film and Television Certificate Program (Back In Your Arms), which is now in post.  This new training program gave Joel the opportunity to work along side industry and Co-op mentors with other certificate students and Co-op members.  Ugly will hopefully be screened at the Silver Wave Film Festival to start with.

HOLD THE PRESS! - RENEWED FREDERICTON MEMBER TERRY OAKES

I spent most of my winter at Crabbe Mountain snowboarding, shooting video of snowboarders and skiers and teaching kids, young and old how to snowboard. I posted a few videos on youtube: Click here to check them out.

I also shot a couple of wedding videos of friends and family, it was a lot of fun but I wouldn't want to do it for a living. My kids and I, Bree, Randy and Dylan shot footage of the Downhill Dummy Race at Crabbe last winter and we are working together to make a little comedy based on what a Dummy goes through to get respect as a snowboarder on a ski hill. Once a dummy, always a dummy, I say!

I am also planning on making a promotional video for the snowschool next winter. I've written a couple of scripts, after I took the script writing course, nothing too special, I just wanted to figure out how to use the software celtx.

This summer I signed up as crew on the film, The Morning After, written, directed and produced by Short Film Venture Recipient Britany Sparrow. This is another first for me and hopefully I will learn a bunch and contribute at the same time.

I spent last summer taking workshops on every topic under the sun at the Film Co-op and they have inspired me tremendously. I am taking more workshops this summer and maybe someday I'll be able to put a script into production.

Britany Sparrow received a grant to produce her calling card short film through the Short Film Venture Program. NB Film gives out the much needed cash component of the grant and the New Brunswick Filmmakers' Co-operative provides the full complimentary professional equipment package, volunteer member crew resources as well as post production facility access.

TRAVELING MEMBER PROFILE UPDATE - JON DRISCOLL

After a bit of globetrotting and testing out my Canon HV20 on Costa Rican monkeys, volcano's and Polish castles, I am now somewhat established here in Minsk, Belarus.

Having been a medieval re-enactment enthusiast for the past 12 years I am now taking my recent film experience and endeavoring to shoot a documentary, and possibly other projects on the subject.

During the week here in Minsk I am studying Russian but there are medieval festivals every weekend in the region. This area has a very active and increasingly popular 'Knights Movement' and I am right in the thick of it having fought in my first live steel tourney with a group of 'Teutonic Knights'.

Later in the summer or early fall I will visit festivals and clubs in Poland, Ukraine, Lithuania and Russia. The main challenges thus far have been language and red tape but by and large Belarus is very safe, and everything works very well.

Here I have made contact with a local indie filmmaker who I plan to collaborate with and through him hope to do more. The plan at
present is is stay here until my student visa expires in September and I hope to continue with film related projects or work that will allow me to stay in Eastern Europe for a while.

FREDERICTON - ASIAN HERITAGE SOCIETY OF NB PRESENTS

ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL SPECIAL SCREENING EVENT

Friday June 6, 2008 7:00pm

Location: Marshall D'Avray Hall, UNB Room 143 (Dugald Blue Auditorium)

FROM HARLING POINT
Directed by Ling Chiu, 2003, 40 min
Traditional Chinese belief says that the soul of a person who dies in a foreign place wanders lost until their bones are returned home. For Chinese pioneers who died in Canada, Victoria's Chinese Cemetery at Harling Point was a temporary resting place until their bones could be sent back to China.

This beautifully expressive film uses archival materials and interviews to trace the history of the Vancouver Island cemetery, from controversy and neglect to its revival as a National Heritage site. It also examines how this past reflects the emergence of a contemporary Chinese Canadian identity, through the voices of two women from different generations. Their vibrant stories illuminate the complexities of growing up Chinese Canadian, including the loss of culture, the pain of not fitting in and the joy of finding one's place.

From the experiences of Chinese pioneers in an unwelcoming land to the efforts of subsequent generations to establish roots in Canada, From Harling Point is an eloquent exploration of tradition, belonging and the notion of home.

BETWEEN: LIVING IN THE HYPHEN
Directed by Anne Marie Nakagawa 2005, 43 min
In Canada, diversity often means "one ethnicity + hyphen + Canadian," but what if you don't fit into an easy category? What if your background is a hybrid of ancestries and you live somewhere between, where cultural identities overlap? Between interweaves the experiences of a group of Canadians with one parent from a European background and one from a visible minority. They're all struggling to find a satisfying frame of reference. Cultural identity, it seems, is more complex than what our multicultural utopia implies. Seven individuals share stories of being multi-ethnic in a world that wants to put each person into a single category.

PROFILE ON SAINT JOHN ACTOR PHILLIP GREENLAW

"Greenlaw the Outlaw "

by SarahLouise Brown of Ethnic Rainbows Native Casting in Saint John

I Met Phillip Greenlaw at a benefit. The next thing I knew I was encountering him on a regular base as I was the head Judge at the Nation Wide Competition Canada's Got Talent Eh! (He was awarded a Certificate for Grand Final Winner this May)

There is not one thing that this man does not know, and if he doesn't know it, he will learn it.  I have either seen him doing it or he has the pictures to prove it. From camping, fishing hunting, welding, construction, wiring, mechanics, carpenter work, land clearing, cooking, caning, gardening, roofing, well digging, road paving, farming, rodeos, calving .....etc. Most of all Phillip is a great entertainer and a wonderful host.

ERNC has worked will "Greenlaw the Outlaw" for 1 1/2 years encouraging him in His music and film  career . Philip was an Extra Special Extra for the CTV Production "Stick and Stones." He also attended the Silver Wave Film Festival (hosted by NB Film Co-op) in November 2007.

I have enjoyed many hours of music arrangements as I worked with Phillip on his own songs. His first CD is done and we will be doing 3 more, Vol. 2-4 in the very near future. Phillip is a team player, the kind of guy you could only hope to have around to laugh with you, Good O'l Cowboy.

He is not the type to sit around or or miss the boat on anything going on in life. With his cowboy sly smile and incredible work ethic, I would vote "Greenlaw the Outlaw" most likely to end the world's laziness problem. He is truly a pleasure to work with and a special member of Ethnic Rainbows Native Casting.
