Diplomatic Relations update - BIYA done Shooting!
"Diplomatic Relations"
By Dennis Poirier

Entering the weekend of March 7th, 8th and 9th, many eyes were watching to see if the crew trainees could pull off the rest of the production work through the Film Co-op's new training programme. As 1st AD, I was stepping into the big shoes of AD's Jason Shipley and Rob Cotterill and it was a little intimidating. My first calls for “Quiet on the Set!” required me to find a confident and firm voice. Affectionately called Big D by my friends, I am a storyteller and notorious for longwinded stories, so how was I going to keep production going according to schedule?

Not a problem as Diplomatic Relations has always had an amazing and dedicated crew of Film Co-op mentors and certificate trainees.

Without these glorious people who came from all over NB and sacrificed many hours to be on set, suffered through sleep deprivation (cursed time change!) the cold and freezing rain conditions, it wouldn’t have been possible.

I now recognize my leadership style as the purveyor of information. I cannot rule with an iron fist, I don’t have it in me. However I like to think that if I didn’t provide the information necessary for the decision makers to make the call, we would have been compromised with the ugly weather and BIYA would not be complete.

I would sincerely like to thank each one of you for making it an incredible experience for myself, producers Tony Merzetti, Tony Sekulich and John Christensen and Cat, all crew members and actors. On behalf of Lita Llewellyn, who plays Audrey in Back In Your Arms, she says: “You rock!”

Pay special attention New Brunswick film industry and do not mistake our good natured ways for a lack of professionalism. We are all extremely capable - the icing on the cake is that we are friendly and respectful on top of that. We have two more TV episodes to wrap up and then we will have a finished product to showcase to the world. I am very lucky to work with such talented ladies and gents.

HOLD THE PRESS! - RENEWED FREDERICTON MEMBER BRUCE LEGROW

"I have been an associate member of the NB Film Co-op for going on three years now. I like to get my hands dirty in any and all aspects of filmmaking. I have worked on a few Co-op shoots, along with my own gruffly styled productions.

I like to compose music, whether it be songs, instrumentals, or atmospheric pieces. Crazy guitar antics are my specialty (its got me out of a lot of jams (pun intended)).

I would like to help out with anyone's shoot in any capacity that they would have me. I am also growing weary of my 'one man army' approach to filmmaking, and would love to have help with the several projects I am currently brewing. Here's to a good year of filmmaking."

HOLD THE PRESS! - RENEWED FREDERICTON MEMBER JEFF BATE BOEROP

Jeff Bate Boerop starting acting while a student at FHS, playing the title role in a production of Shakespeare's Macbeth. After graduating he helped assemble a troupe for a production of Hamlet, in which he also played the lead.

He attended St. Thomas University, and performed in a show every semester, even during the summers. He helped organize the Atlantic University and Community Theatre Festival, and worked as a producer and drama teacher for Daigle Theatre. In 1998, he was selected to attend the British-American Drama Academy's summer programme at Oxford, where he took classes with teachers from the RSC and the Juilliard School.

After several years of working in Toronto, Jeff returned to his home in Fredericton. He has since appeared in Much Ado About Nothing, and played the role of Ash Campbell in the UNB student film Making the Grade. He also appeared in Joel Thompson's low-budget horror They Didn't Make It, and recently wrapped up a role Diplomatic Relations.

Jeff has worked with numerous NBFC members in short films, script reads, and directing workshops. He is Fredericton's resident dialect coach, and has led workshops for actors. He can always be counted on to provide entertainment on film shoots when things get slow.

Jeff is currently studying Political Science and Economics at UNB

HOLD THE PRESS! - RENEWED FREDERICTON MEMBER PAUL ANGERS

During the 18 years with St-John Ambulance, I took a Special Effects Make-Up course to help train first-responders and paramedics during mock disasters and to add a visual aid for first-aid competitors. I also took a First-Aid/CPR instructor course.

I joined the NB Film Coop during member Joel Thompson's feature “They Didn’t Make It” as a Special Effects Makeup Artist and have been very busy since then, being involved in over 6 projects doing a variety of roles from actor to stunt coordinator, continuity and art director.

Prior to joining the Film Co-op, I was involved with various theatre productions while in school and as well scored a part as an extra for a feature film shot in Fredericton entitled “Frozen With Fear” starring Bo Derek and Wayne Rogers. I was also a Special Effects Makeup Artist for member Tim O’Neill’s Short Film Venture film “Unseen Enemy”.

I am looking forward to another busy year helping Co-op members with their projects. This year I will partner up with Film Co-op filmmaker/actor Dennis Poirier to create the project “Ask Ug”. It should be lots of fun.

Serendipity and the Acting Game

By Pauline Cronin, Saint John Co-op member

From time to time, Cat and I chat about what it takes to land a paid acting job in this province. Let's face it. The opportunities are few and far between - relative to larger centres. Our auditioning muscles suffer for lack of exercise. Typically, casting calls come with very little notice, are limited to a day and may be long drive away. One ends up wondering if the effort to get there is worth it.

On the flip side, there are fewer people vying for those opportunities, right? So why aren't we getting more roles? Lots of reasons. You'd be surprised how many people complain but, don't even try out. What I've learned is that you have to show up. Like the lottery, you cannot win if you don't buy a ticket. When we show up for an audition - even one we're all wrong for - we're getting audition experience and the casting director is offering choice to the director. This makes the casting director look good and who knows, she may remember you for the future. I often hear actors bemoaning the fact that they audition but, never get a part. If you think you've nailed the audition, be proud of your efforts and then let it go. There is so much subjectivity and serendipity involved in the decision making. You might be too pretty, too genteel, too young, too old, not what the director envisioned, you name it.

I've auditioned against type on several occasions - the Ambassador to Sweden; a cheesy, foul-mouthed, gum chewing waitress; a snippy nurse; a middle-aged seductress;... to name a few. Playing against type gives me little hope of landing the part. On the other hand, these roles are fun to try out for because I'm less attached to the outcome.

One of my larger roles came from a decent audition and the good fortune that I looked like I could be the big sister of the lead actor. Another time, a co-op director offered me an opportunity because of an acting workshop we had met in. Most recently, I drove all the way to Fredericton to audition for a tiny, non-speaking, directable actor role. I was dressed for work, wearing my glasses, looking every bit the executive - not great for the hockey mom role I was auditioning for. But, proof that you never know... the director and producer took one look at me and asked me to read for the role of Joan MacAlpine, Minister of Parks and Tourism. Two scenes and 25 lines opposite the lead actors. And I got the part!

PEI - Are you the next Great Canadian Screenwriter?

2nd PEI Screenwriters' Bootcamp builds on 1st-year participants' deals. February 28, 2008 (Charlottetown) - After the rousing success of last year's inaugural PEI Screenwriters' Bootcamp, the Island Media Arts Co-op is gearing up for an exciting 2008 event that will shake the rafters.

“PEI is the right place and now is the right time for developing screenwriters,” said Louise Lalonde, Project Manager of Island Media Arts Co-op, the group that conceived of and launched the innovative writer training camp. “It's early yet, but already two Bootcamp graduates have development options or deals - those are real results for both the writers and the Bootcamp.”

This year, screenwriting mentors Alex Epstein (Montreal screenwriter and author of Crafty Screenwriting) and Tom Shoebridge (founding member of Ottawa's Canadian Screen Training Centre) will once again be working with 12 up-andcoming
screenwriters whose stories will have been selected to develop and pitch to broadcasters and producers. Of the 12 projects developed during last year’s Bootcamp, so far PEI's own Peter Murphy received an option from Halifax producers for his feature screenplay, “This
Old Haunt,” and Nova Scotia writer Mary Pedersen has now signed a TV series development deal with CBC for her project, “Ice Queens.” Bootcamp is restricted to emerging or mid-career writers who are also residents of one of the four Atlantic provinces.

Selection is based on the merit of their ideas and
the quality of their writing. The 2nd Annual PEI Screenwriters' Bootcamp is presented in collaboration with Telefilm Canada, Technology PEI, Super Channel, and the Island Media Arts Coop.
Broadcasters CBC, CTV, and Super Channel will join regional producers on the last day of Bootcamp to hear participants make their pitches. This retreat-style professional development week is an opportunity for emerging and mid-career creators to learn how to work with the “big boys”.

The Island Media Arts Coop has existed for thirty years and has been a trainer and innovator in the development of film and video production. IMAC, a not-forprofit organization, welcomes artists of different backgrounds to stimulate and promote film and video production in the community. This retreat-style workshop is being held from June 2-6, 2008 in Mount Stewart, PEI, and the deadline for submissions is March 21, 2008. For applications and more information go to www.islandmedia.pe.ca or contact Louise Lalonde at 902.566.1353

The hot cult-flick Rock, Paper, Scissors: The Way Of The Tosser by Tim Doiron and April Mullen, is unleashed at screens nationwide in tandem with a series of impromptu Rock, Paper, Scissors tournaments at colleges, with cash on the line. Starting March 4th in Ottawa at the University of Ottawa and continuing cross-country throughout March, the Rock, Paper, Scissors Cult Tour reaches critical mass at Toronto's Bloor Cinema April 4 and 5 with the crowning of a Grand Champion.

(Toronto – February 12, 2008) Rock breaks scissors, scissors cut paper and paper covers rock. It's the Tao of the Tosser, and if you can crack that cosmic code, then Tim Doiron and April Mullen just might have $100 for you. In a stroke of out-of-the-box marketing, the young filmmakers are taking their award-winning festival-favourite film, Rock, Paper, Scissors: The Way Of The Tosser on the road, releasing it in a series of screenings in university campuses and local town screens. The "University Cult Tour" will see Doiron and Mullen travel coast-to-coast with their film, hitting the streets of every town in character and costume (tight jeans and filly tutus) looking for "true Tossers."

In concert with various Student Unions, they'll screen their flick at universities and follow each screening with a real-life Rock, Paper, Scissors Campus Tournament. Winners get $100 cash and a chance to be a Grand Champion (grand prize: a walk-on role in their next feature film).

Day Two in each whistle stop will see them parade around town challenging anyone in their path to a quick Toss (Street or Tournament style) before hosting a screening of the flick at a local movie theatre. The Tossers themselves will introduce the film at each screening and everyone will get a chance to meet them and grill them at post-screening Q&As.

A truly independent movie, made by truly independent artists, Rock, Paper Scissors: The Way Of The Tosser is an audacious film that stands repeated viewing, with quotable quotes, quirky comic style and a street aesthetic that's building a word-of-mouth groundswell of fandom coast-to-coast.

WINNER! AUDIENCE AWARD – TOP PICK – Cambridge Film Festival 2007/WINNER BEST CANADIAN FEATURE/AUDIENCE AWARD - Edmonton Film Festival 2007BACKGROUND
ROCK, PAPER, WHAT? Rock, Paper, Scissors is a game with ageless, boundless, universal appeal primarily used - until recently - as a means to determine a fair decision between two opposing parties.
In the past few years this act of "tossing" one of three hand gestures has developed into a competitive sport with a devoted coterie of followers. With its roots stemming all the way back to 19th Century Japan, Rock, Paper, Scissors has matured into a fanatical craze approaching the magnitude of poker. The World RPS Society has grown immensely and the World RPS Championships have been aired throughout the United States on ESPN. The sport has grown out of its cult-like status and is currently being considered as a demonstration sport in the 2010 Winter Olympics.

FILM SYNOPSIS
Throughout history people have used their body, mind and soul in their never-ending quest for power. Gary Brewer uses his hands. Flanked by his girlfriend Holly Brewer (no relation) and his best friend Trevor, Gary sets out to find his destiny. Rock, Paper, Scissors: The Way Of The Tosser is a hilarious comedy feature that shines a spotlight on the current, fast-growing obsession with competitive Rock, Paper, Scissors.
Plagued by his arch nemesis, Baxter Pound, and inspired by his mentor, Finnigan O'Reilly, Gary tosses day and night to prepare for the competition of a lifetime. But will winning solve all of life's mysteries? Themes of love, friendship, acceptance and affirmation are cautiously revealed in this quirky comedy that is destined to be a cult classic.

FREDERICTON - MONDAY NIGHT FILM SERIES

Mar 17, 2008, 8pm
CARAMEL
Director: Nadine Labaki
Cast: Nadine Labaki, Yasmine Al Masri, Joanna Moukarzel, Gisèle
Aouad, Adel Karam, Sihame Haddad
Run Time: 95 minutes
Country: Lebanon/France
Year: 2007
Language: French, Arabic with English subtitles

CARAMEL, a hit at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival, also triumphed at the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival,® where it wowed audiences as a Gala Presentation. Nadine Labaki‘s directorial debut truly manages to stir the senses and emotions in this enchanting story, set in and around a Beirut beauty parlor.

Layale, (Nadine Labaki, who also directed the film) is the owner and lifeblood of the salon. We soon learn just how complex her life is as we discover she is having an affair with a married man with whom she is hopelessly in love. While Layale awaits the secret call of her lover, Nisrine (Yasmine Al Masri), a spirited bombshell, is on the verge of marrying a conservative Muslim. Not only must she deal with the upcoming wedding, but also reckon with the fact that her fiancé might discover a secret he won‘t like on their wedding night. Meanwhile, Jamale, (Gisèle Aouad), is an aging actress and client struggling to embrace her body as she desperately tries to hold back the hands of time. Rima, (Joanna Moukarzel), hardworking and rough around the edges, has her anomalous desires awakened when her ideal client walks through the door. Nearby, seamstress Rose (Sihame Haddad) stifles her desire by deflecting the attentions of a long awaited gentleman suitor as she cares for her elder sister.

The ensemble cast on display here has such raw charisma that the film takes on an almost improvisatory quality; the touching and poignant performances generate enormous warmth and wit. What makes CARAMEL so unique is the fact that it chooses to look past the war and politics in Beirut to the eternal truths of love and passion. These realistic portrayals manage to remind us of our sisters, mothers and girlfriends by embodying grace and strength simultaneously. Although we may not have lived these characters' lives, we know their struggles all too well. Each scene is carefully crafted so as to allow the audience to experience each moment of their pain, joy and sorrow. In the end we are reminded of what makes the women we know and love so very, very special.

".… ‘Caramel‘ offers a pleasant, entertaining experience, adding an honorable panel to the growing body of films about women." — Emanuel Levy, Film Review

"Performances are likeable across the board… ." — John DeFore, The Hollywood Reporter

Bruce Elder is a filmmaker, critic and teacher of film studies at Ryerson University. Described by New York filmmaker and critic Jonas Mekas as "the most important North American avant-garde filmmaker to emerge during the 1980s," Elder combines images, music and text to create works that reflect his interest in philosophy, technology, science, spirituality and the human body. His first major film cycle (20 films), "The Book of All the Dead", inspired by Dante Alighieri's "Commedia" and Ezra Pound's "Cantos", grew out of his preoccupation with the horrors of modernity, its faith in progress and the loss of a sense of what is good and evil.

SAINT JOHN FILMMAKER TO TRAVEL TO FILM SUMMIT IN BELGRADE

NB Film Co-op member Andrew MacCormack, a Director and Editor with Hemmings House Pictures in Saint John, NB, will be taking a group of young film students to the 3rd International Youth Media Summit in Belgrade, Serbia in August of 2008. Andrew is an accomplished documentary filmmaker, in particular travel documentaries.

He will be heading the team of youth heading to Belgrade as the Canadian representatives. In addition, the team will be making a documentary about their entire experience.
The team has already been accepted as the official Canadian representatives as long as we complete the required application by March 31st, 2008. Andrew apologizes about the late contact for this initiative, but we just found out we were accepted. This will be a once in a lifetime experience for any young filmmaker who is passionate about promoting world peace through film!

Any young film makers between the ages of 15-22 who are interested are urged to contact Andrew as soon as possible atandrew@hemmingshousepictures.com

Below is some information on the Summit and a link to the website

3rd International Youth Media Summit www.IYMS.eu invites organizations, schools and other institutions working with media to nominate two young media enthusiasts 15-22 years old to participate during August 20th to 27th in Belgrade, Serbia. The young participants must be candidates as Student Filmmaker and Student Diplomat.

This Summit will continue the work started in 2006, and will incorporate changes based on last year's feedback from the first (Los Angeles) and second (Sydney) Summit. One of these changes will be a greater emphasis on developing media production skills. Also, the student delegates will be broadcasting on a daily basis via Serbian Broadcasting Corporation, Radio, internet Radio, podcasting and vodcasting...

We are asking those countries with the ability to raise the necessary funds to provide their own airfare to Belgrade, Serbia. Any funds raised by 3rd IYMS organizers will be used to pay part of airfares for delegates from economically disadvantaged regions, or countries facing humanitarian challenges.

- All delegates must be 15- 22 years old being represented by a recognized media program at a school, arts and/or cultural non for profit Non Government Organization. (We are looking for delegates who will continue to advocate, addressing Summit issues locally, regionally, nationally and internationally at all times.
- Student delegates will need to complete their initial assignments and submit them to 3rd IYMS organizers.
-  You will also need to fill out an application. On the application, you will find directions for those requesting financial help for plane fare.
-  Adults wishing to take part in Summit 2008 should fill out an application and address the professional capacities in which they can mentor/supervise students.
-  Please start to research what you will need to do for a visa to Serbia, and the timeline.
- To insure that the Summit can cover some expenses: a registration fee of $300US (€220) is required per participants upon their acceptance. Please note that 3rd IYMS will provide local transport within the Belgrade Airport and Youth Hostel situated at the centre of Belgrade, Training and Facilitation by industry professionals as well as accommodation including Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner for the duration of the summit.
