RENEWED FREDERICTON MEMBER JEFF CRAWFORD
Born and raised in Burton, New Brunswick, I have been involved in the entertainment industry since 1999. I started working with Theatre New Brunswick and also the Fredericton Playhouse. In 2001, I ventured to Toronto for 3 years studying Technical Theatre Production at Ryerson University. During my time in Toronto, I was involved with many short film ventures, working with Radio & TV Arts students from Ryerson. After my 2nd year in Toronto, I was offered the job as Technical Director for Toronto Dance Theatre, where I worked for about a year before returning to the NB joining TNB as a Lighting Technician after which I moved on to join the Fredericton Playhouse as the Lighting Department Head until June of 2007. During these years I also freelanced to theatre companies like Ships Company Theatre, Live Bait Theatre, and Theatre St. Thomas.
I also created Projection Designs for various productions in the East Coast consisting of my own original photography. This lead to me pursuing my true passion of Photography, where I feel I can utilize my lighting skills more creatively, while still working closely with clients to produce the top notch product they expect. I have also been staying involved with the film sector as a Stills Photographer, which to date I have been involved with 4 films within the last calendar year. It all started with my involvement in "Cold Day In Hell" Directed by Matt Brown & Produced by Gary Ferguson (Film Co-op members), which won 3 Silver Wave Film Festival awards in 2006 including 'Best NB Short Drama'.
I am currently expanding my photography skill & knowledge at the NB College of Craft & Design, coming to the closing of the 1st of the 2 yr Specialty Photography program. Recently I have been involved as a stills photographer in the Diplomatic Relations shoot with the NB Film Co-op, working with some very talented artists. I look forward to working with everyone on future projects.

SLAVE LAKE ALBERTA MEMBER FROM AWAY TYRONE MEYERS
A big Hi!, to NB Film Co-op and all its members.
My name is Tyrone Meyers. My wife Margaret and I have had the pleasure of being members of the NB Film Co-op for a few years now. That is up until we moved to Slave Lake, Alberta. We both got jobs out here and are doing well. I also have been teaching a film production course at the Northern Lakes College here one night a week from September until February 12th. What an experience. I think I learned as much as I taught. It looks like we are a go for next year as well. Because of our experiences with The New Brunswick Film Co-op and New Brunswick Film, we have remained in the movie making business. We Just finished shooting our third short, "Angel Unaware". That's includes the two we shot in NB.
It takes place in a cold mid-winter setting where an wealthy elderly lady is on her way to the big city to visit her daughter when she winds up stranded on the highway. After sitting in her car for almost two hours with no one stopping to help, she is finally assisted by a trucker. Their encounter would change their lives and the lives of others forever. We go into edit next week.
I have also been given the rights to shoot my first feature film. It's a adaptation from a novel by a local author here in Slave Lake by the name of Arron Lehman. The book is entitled: "Mystery On Dog Island" which is an actual island out on the lake here.
It's about a 14 year old aboriginal boy who lives in a blended family. Struggling with his own identity, he sets out on an adventure in mid-winter with his half brother hoping to find some answers. After telling his parents they were going to the wilderness camp some miles on the south shore of Slave Lake, they head for Dog Island which is in a forbidden zone. His goal was to look for his missing aboriginal grandfather. In doing so, will he find what he's looking for OR will they meet the same fate?
I am really excited about this project and entering it and my short, "Angel Unaware" in the festivals in the coming year.
Thank you Cat and Tony for all your encouragement and help during the time we were with you. I am proud to still be associated with the NB Film Co-op and it's members.
A big HI to all the members of the NB Film Co-op and a word of encouragement, Pursue, pursue, pursue and your dreams will come true. If Cat and Tony or any of the members are ever out this way, please stop by for a visit. Don't come all at once though...ha,ha.
The best of luck in all your creative endeavors at the NB Film Co-op.

FREDERICTON - MONDAY NIGHT FILM SERIES
Mar 31, 2008, 8pm
THE DIVING BELL AND THE BUTTERFLY
Director: Julian Schnabel
Cast: Mathieu Amalric, Emmanuelle Seigner, Marie-Josée Croze,
Anne Consigny, Max Von Sydow
Run Time: 112 minutes
Country: France
Year: 2007
Language: France with English subtitles
By turns dreamlike, brave and breathtaking, THE DIVING BELL AND THE BUTTERFLY – a Special Presentation at the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival® and winner of the best director prize at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival – is the beautiful adaptation of Jean Dominique Bauby‘s affecting, revelatory memoir. Once a successful fashion editor and carefree womanizer, Bauby awoke one day to find himself a prisoner in his own body. He had been paralyzed by a massive stroke that rendered him powerless to move a muscle – except his left eyelid.
This flawless gem of a film is among filmmaker and artist Julian Schnabel‘s finest works. Schnabel and cinematographer Janusz Kaminski (SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, MUNICH) follow Bauby (movingly played by Mathieu Amalric), recreating his subjective agony and his most intimate memories.
His wife (Emmanuelle Seigner), whom he had left a year before the stroke, selflessly attends him and goes so far as to translate correspondence between him and a new lover. He wrestles with feelings of regret over missed opportunities for happiness, though he mostly feels guilty for not having spent more time with his children.
Bauby‘s nurses develop an ingenious, if exhausting method of communication, through which he painstakingly writes his memoirs . By listening to the letters of the alphabet and blinking when the correct one is uttered, he is able to preserve his final link to the outside world – the winking butterfly that frees him from the diving bell of his broken body. As we are shown more of Bauby‘s life in flashback, the lines between dream, memory, hallucination and consciousness begin to falter, granting us insight into the mind of someone in a near-vegetative state.
Schnabel‘s painterly creativity runs free here, showing us dense colours and visions limited only by his – and Bauby‘s – powers of fabrication. and Schnabel has favoured misunderstood artist characters in his previous films BASQUIAT and BEFORE THE FALLS.
When he was healthy, Bauby was desensitized to life. Trapped in a phenomenological jail, he is reborn, as Schnabel points out, as a pure "I." THE DIVING BELL AND THE BUTTERFLY should cement his reputation as an artist of supreme achievement.
"[A]lmost unbearably poignant … Amalric is perfect within the tightly circumscribed parameters of his role.." – Justin Chang, Variety

Bruce Elder is a filmmaker, critic and teacher of film studies at Ryerson University. Described by New York filmmaker and critic Jonas Mekas as "the most important North American avant-garde filmmaker to emerge during the 1980s," Elder combines images, music and text to create works that reflect his interest in philosophy, technology, science, spirituality and the human body. His first major film cycle (20 films), "The Book of All the Dead", inspired by Dante Alighieri's "Commedia" and Ezra Pound's "Cantos", grew out of his preoccupation with the horrors of modernity, its faith in progress and the loss of a sense of what is good and evil.
His current film cycle, "The Book of Praise", makes extensive use of computer-image generation, highlighting his fascination with mathematics and digital technology. . Retrospectives of Prof. Elder's work have been mounted by The Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto), the Cinematheque Quebecoise (Montreal), Senzatitolo (Trento, Italy) and Anthology Film Archives (New York) and he has exhibitions at New York's Museum of Modern Art, Los Angeles Film Forum, Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, Kino Arsenal in Berlin, and many other centres.

MONCTON - Frye workshop focuses on films
Published Wednesday March 26th, 2008
Moncton Times and Transcript
Aspiring writers and those interested in professional filmmaking may find it worthwhile to take a few hints from award-winning novelist Russell Banks at this years' Frye Festival. An avid producer of fiction and poetry, the American-based writer will draw on his previous work, and success, as he leads a three-hour film-writing workshop at Theatre l'Escaouette on April 25.
In his presentation, Banks will examine the transition of fiction to film, comparing his two best-selling novels, The Sweet Hereafter and Affliction, which have been made into feature films, to their movie adaptations. Born in Newton, Massachusetts in 1940, Bank's works include Continental Drift, Rule of the Bone, and Cloudsplitter.
