FREDERICTON - MONDAY NIGHT FILM SERIES

Mar 10, 2008 8pm at Tilley Hall, UNB Campus, Fredericton
MY KID COULD PAINT THAT
Director: Amir Bar-Lev
Cast: Marla Olmstead, Amir Bar-Lev
Run Time: 82 minutes
Country: USA

At the age of four, Marla Olmstead became an art-world sensation when in 2004 a gallery in her hometown of Binghamton, New York, devoted a solo show to her abstract paintings. Soon collectors were lauding her talent and paying up to $15,000 a canvas. Was this pint-sized Pollock. a genuine prodigy or just a pawn of a manipulative market? This is the key question driving Amir Bar-Lev‘s utterly compelling documentary, which recently screened to great acclaim at the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival®. Bar-Lev‘s award winning feature debut, FIGHTER, screened at the Festival in 2000. Bar-Lev spent a year with the Olmstead family and won the trust of Marla‘s parents Mark and Laura to follow her story wherever it would go. But none of them expected the twists it would take.

MY KID COULD PAINT THAT uses a simple story to explore complex questions about art, media and family. We witness journalists going on a feeding frenzy with Marla – from the fluffy touch of The Today Show to the suspicious investigation of 60 Minutes. Marla‘s parents are overwhelmed by the media barrage. Mark, a night manager at a Frito Lay plant, is thrilled by the attention and the chance to guide his child‘s career. Laura, a dental hygienist, is more wary about journalists "who blow into your life for half a day… and you never hear from them again."

As Bar-Lev forms a bond with Mark and Laura, transforming from detached observer to friend, Marla‘s story takes a different turn that strains everyone involved. The film skilfully interweaves the perspectives of others drawn into the tale. Gallery owner Anthony Brunelli, a photorealist painter, has misgivings about abstract art, even though Marla is his greatest success. Local journalist Elizabeth Cohen, who was the first to write about Marla, wonders if the subsequent coverage did more harm than good. New York Times art critic Michael Kimmelman puts the Marla phenomenon in the context of an art world that trades on cynicism and irony. As the mysteries and tensions grow, the film forces us to ask: What defines the value of a painting? The value of news? The value of friendship? These questions are bound to spur vigorous debate, just as art should.

"In "My Kid Could Paint That," Bar-Lev poses all kinds of fascinating questions not only about the nature of Marla‘s art, but about the nature of his own documentary as an art form as well … Aside from being a captivating and highly interesting film, Bar-Lev‘s 'My Kid Could Paint That' is also something extremely rare – a piece of honest journalism" – Sally Foster, Film Threat

Bruce Elder is a filmmaker, critic and teacher of film studies at Ryerson University. Described by New York filmmaker and critic Jonas Mekas as "the most important North American avant-garde filmmaker to emerge during the 1980s," Elder combines images, music and text to create works that reflect his interest in philosophy, technology, science, spirituality and the human body. His first major film cycle (20 films), "The Book of All the Dead", inspired by Dante Alighieri's "Commedia" and Ezra Pound's "Cantos", grew out of his preoccupation with the horrors of modernity, its faith in progress and the loss of a sense of what is good and evil.

His current film cycle, "The Book of Praise", makes extensive use of computer-image generation, highlighting his fascination with mathematics and digital technology. . Retrospectives of Prof. Elder's work have been mounted by The Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto), the Cinematheque Quebecoise (Montreal), Senzatitolo (Trento, Italy) and Anthology Film Archives (New York) and he has exhibitions at New York's Museum of Modern Art, Los Angeles Film Forum, Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, Kino Arsenal in Berlin, and many other centres.

Elder has been a guest lecturer at institutions across North America and around the world and has written books and articles on film, music, poetry and the visual arts. In 2007, Elder was one of the recipients of the Governor-General's award for Visual Arts. Bruce Elder lives in Toronto.

The Independent Media Arts Alliance contests Bill C-10

Montreal, March 3rd 2008 - The National Director of the Independent Media Arts Alliance (IMAA), Jennifer Dormer, issued a letter to the Honourable Josée Verner, Minister of Canadian Heritage, contesting the part of Bill C-10 which would allow the Minister to deny eligibility to tax credits of productions determined to be contrary to public policy.

Jennifer Dorner states that "the amendment is an assault on the Charter of Rights and Freedoms which guarantees freedom of expression and should be ardently and tirelessly defended by the Minister responsible for Canadian artistic and cultural expression."

The government's own 1999 report "The Arts and Canada's Cultural Policy" states "Canadian cultural production has found it hard to flourish without direct or indirect government support."

Thus the withdrawal of access to tax credits would effectively make it impossible to create certain films or videos in Canada. The impact of this amendment is to curtail the freedom of expression in Canada, and the IMAA believes that it is an assault on Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

IMAA is concerned that this proposed process will adversely affect the ability of media artists to access funding to create artistic work.

The IMAA is a non-profit national arts organization representing 80 media arts organizations who in turn serve over 12,000 media artists and cultural workers in all parts of Canada.
