Spotlight!

DIEPPE - PROFILE: CATCHING DREAMS
By Christine Johnson

Hello, My name is Christine Johnson and I'm 24 years old. I am an aspiring actress/artist originating from Dieppe, N.B.

I first discovered my passion for the arts at the age of nine when my mother enrolled me into artistic gymnastics. Through gymnastics I discovered discipline, endurance, courage, confidence and I learned how to dream big. I also nurtured a deep interest in performing for an audience.

From a very young age I choreographed gymnastic and dance routines and from there on my enthusiasm towards creativity just grew stronger. As a child, I always had a fascination with the creative arts, looking up to so many actresses, dancers, models and singers, My heart was set on visions of one day becoming one myself.

After graduating from Mathieu-Martin High School in 2002, I decided to begin some serious training at a local dance school "DancEast", where I took classes in Ballet, Jazz, Modern and Hip Hop. Through my attendance at DancEast, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to perform acrobatics and dance in a thrilling production at the Capitol Theatre called "The Nutcracker." What a magical experience.

In that same year I also completed the advanced modeling course at "Ruth Barne's Modeling Agency" in Moncton, NB. I've also taken part in various types of modeling jobs including choreographing and performing several dance numbers in the "SpeedSportEast" fashion shows at the Moncton Colesium. I've since continued my modeling career by working with various photographers, posing in front of the camera to gain more experience.

My very first accomplishment as an actress was in a bilingual documentary called "La Legende Bricklin" produced and directed by Chris LeBlanc. Not only did I get cast for a dancing role and made friends on set, but they hired me on as a choreographer too. I was very thrilled when I went to see the Premiere's and saw that they had used a shot of my legs for the movie cover! It was such an amazing experience that opened so many doors for me inspiring me to take on acting on a more serious level.

In 2006, I worked on Grana Production's dramatic feature film "Black Eyed Dog" (written by a Film Co-op member and premiered at Silver Wave in 2006), where I was able to get the chance to shoot a scene with the talented and lovely Miss Sonia Saloma.

Just last summer, I was hired on as an extra in the feature film "Growing Op" and my most recent acting was in the NB Film Co-op's Training Television Series "Diplomatic Relations".

I'm so grateful that I've found such true passion in my work and I'm loving all the new experiences and appreciating every new audition.

I also have a huge passion for music. I'm a singer and I play guitar.
In January 2007, I traveled to Anaheim California for the winter "Namm" Show, where I met a man by the name of Boo McAfee who is the founder of extreme sport drumming's "World's Fastest Drumming Competiton." That year I was nominated as the official model for WFD 2008, and the following summer of 2008 I was hired as "Miss WFD" for the "Namm" Show in Austin Texas, It was an amazing experience, a dream coming true right before my eyes...a true awakening. I am proud to now have the chance to work again this summer for the "Namm" Show as "Miss WFD 2008", in Nashville TN representing all the fastest drummers in the world.

I am presently teaching yoga and dance classes at the CCNB college here in Dieppe. I am building my cliental with plans of one day running my own business.

I have a hunger for acting, modeling, dancing and singing. I want to continue growing as an artist and am striving to make all of my dreams come true.

The Maritimes is full of support and I'm appreciating all that it has offered me. I'm young, full of life and ready to keep catchin' dream s.

Christine

LINCOLN - CO-OP MEMBER PROFILE - PIERRE HUARD
HOW I SHOT A SHORT FILM IN SIX WEEKS

It all started with this story that I had kicking around in my head which grew to the point where I thought my brain would explode and I would lose my mind. I did the only thing I could do. I went looking for a partner with experience and writing ability and the patience to work with a director who has a very straight forward style of making a film. That was when I realized that Dennis Poirier would be the man to help alleviate my madness and help me transfer these thoughts to help me create my short.

I had know Dennis or Big D, as he is called since I first became a member at the Film Co-op over 10 years ago. I raced to his place and we banged out a script and called it The cleanup .

I took it home and 7 rewrites later, we had a final copy. I then needed to round up the resources that I would need to make this happen and because I'm a member in good standing at the Film Co-op with my volunteer time and training in, the Film Co-op generously provided me with a small grant and equipment.

This allowed me to start knocking on doors to get free locations, secure props and gather wardrobe which was provided by Film Co-op member and Production Designer Glendon McKinney.

In the end, we ended up with 5 locations requiring several set moves with 45 minute drives with full cast and crew to and from locations in and out of Fredericton and the surrounding area.

After securing all of our locations, we started recruiting a trained Film Co-op member crew consisting of Jeff Hackett, Bruce Legrow, Rebecca Flewelling, Michel Guitard, Joe Blades, Dennis Sweet and James Kennedy as well as myself and Dennis Poirier.

Then, I  needed to cast and luckily we knew some talented actors who were available and the casting was done before we knew it.

Everyone received a script and we decided on a shoot date and prepared for the sweet chaos that was to come. On the day of the shoot it was nice and sunny and we started shooting right away Michel Guitard took the helm as our camera guy and he helped set a brisk pace that made it possible to get several shots done in a relatively short amount of time. We were also able to bring along a laptop and at the end of a day's shooting we assembled the footage

The cast and crew were amazing: Miranda Wilkins, Geoff Giffin and Pierre Alexander Huard showed patience and professionalism throughout the production. None of this would have been possible without support from the NB Film Co-op and local merchants, Robert Simmons Clothing and Picaroons Traditional Ales to name a few.

We are into post production now and will have a fine picture cut done soon, followed by some post production sound and other audio work with the hope to showcase the film at a festival to anyone who is willing to sit and watch it.

I had a lot of fun working with some of the newer Film Co-op members on this project. Their energy reminded me of why I got into film in the first place and having worked with most of the crew and cast from 'Blood Shed' last year made it all the more interesting and rewarding. (By the way, Blood Shed is well into post production and will be ready for screening very soon so stay tuned for more details).

Again I want to thank the NB Film Co-op and everyone who helped The Cleanup move forward.

Lincoln Film Co-op member Pierre Huard

IMPROVISATION AND ACTING EXERCISES
(Intermediate- Hands on)
May 25, Sunday, 11 am - 5 pm
Instructor: Dennis Poirier
Location: New Brunswick Film Co-op
(732 Charlotte Street, Fredericton)
Charlotte Street Arts Centre
Fee: $20 For Film Co-op Members
$30 For Non-Members

Class Limit: 8

Improvisation and acting exercises will explore how an aspiring actor can mentally prepare for a given role. Often on stage and sometimes film, actors will forget a line; it happens. It can throw off a whole scene if the actor and others on set can't recover.

Freezing is an actor's worst fear, because it takes away the element of telling a story away from the audience or mood the filmmaker is trying to create. On true film (35mm, 16mm or 8mm) it is not as simple as "getting it right" on the next take. Film stock is expensive.

On Mini DV and HD, the actor may think he or she has unlimited retakes, but you risk making a long shooting day longer than it should. Improvisation is a useful tool to help fill in the voids when needed. It does not mean you should constantly go off script, but if you can add unscripted actions and proper emotional reactions to a scene; the director will love you for it. Your goal should not to give continuity/script supervisor and the director headaches, but an actor should strive to add to the scene to make it look plausible and true to the character.

INSTRUCTOR'S BIOGRAPHY

Dennis Poirier is a writer and actor in Fredericton New Brunswick. With a growing resume of NB Filmmaker's Co-op films, he is also involved in theatre with 'Les Fous de la Scène', a French community theatre group, NoteaBle Acts and occasionally improv.

Dennis enjoys the higher emotional threshold of playing villains on film, even if his true demeanor is quite opposite. He is thrilled he has more opportunities to act on stage and film in the capital city and actively seeks training and workshops all over NB to improve his ability to step away from his real life shoes.

WHAT ARE YOU ANYWAYS - 2005, 11 min
Follow the adventures of the Super Nip as filmmaker Jeff Chiba Stearns explores his cultural backgrounds growing up a mix of Japanese and Caucasian in a small white-bred Canadian city. This short, classically animated film looks at particular periods in Jeff's life where he battled with finding an identity.

UNDER THE WILLOW TREE: PIONEER CHINESE WOMAN IN CANADA - 1997, 51 min,
A rich and little-known part of Canadian history unfolds through the stories of the first Chinese women to come to Canada and of subsequent generations of Chinese Canadian women. Beautiful old photographs from family albums, the recollections of seven women who grew up in Canada in the first half of the 20th century, and the memories of narrator and director, Dora Nipp, whose grandfather came to Canada in 1881 to build the railway, create a remarkable story of stunning impact.

MINORU: MEMORY OF EXILE - 1992, 18 min
The bombing of the American naval base at Pearl Harbor, by a nation he knew only by name, thrust nine-year-old Minoru Fukushima into a world of racism so malevolent he would be forced to leave Canada, the land of his birth. Like thousands of other Japanese Canadians, Minoru and his family were branded as an enemy of Canada, dispatched to internment camps in the interior of British Columbia, and finally deported to Japan.

UNB, Fredericton
Tickets available at the door: $10/adult ; $7/student

"Increasingly recognized as one of the more significant dramatists in the English-speaking world." -Charles R. Bachman, Modern Drama "Sam Shepard fills the role of professional playwright as a good ballet dancer or acrobat fulfills his role in performance. That is, he always delivers, he executes feats of dexterity and technical difficulty that an untrained person could not, and makes them seem easy." -Michael Feingold, The Village Voice

Sam Shepard is the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of more than forty-five plays.

Geography Of A Horse Dreamer  is the story of Cody, a dreamer. He's being held hostage by two would-be gangsters, Santee and Beaujo, because he dreams the winners at the horse races and their eccentric boss gets rich from the betting. At the start of the play, however, we find Cody in the midst of "The Slump" in a low class hotel room, handcuffed to the bed with no chance to escape, his luck seemingly run out. With the arrival of the boss, Fingers, and his mysterious employ, The Doctor, Cody is pulled further and further into a very strange world where neckbones are carried as good luck charms - he needs to find a way out...and fast.

The players, consisting of UNB/STU alumni and faculty, are Nicholas
Cole, Mike Coughlan, Andrew Estabrooks, Len Falkenstein, Andrew Jones, Robert Moore, Matthew Spinney and Jordan Trethewey. The production is directed by Scott Shannon.

Nasty Shadows Theatre Co. was founded in the Summer of 1999. While working with small groups of actors and technicians from both

FREDERICTON - ACTORS NEEDED!

The Morning After, Brit Sparrow's new short comedy, is set to film this summer, with the following volunteer actor roles up for grabs:

Jeff (Early 20s) - A bookish, buttoned-down Young Republican, you have a five-year plan and a properly diversified stock portfolio. You enjoy "fun" as much as the next fellow, but your studies and your overly possessive girlfriend, Paige, leave little time for manly chumming with your carefree (you'd say "irresponsible") boyhood pal, Karl. You lack confidence in general, with woman especially, and so are relieved to have a girl like Paige to call the shots for you. And you worry - like, a lot - and about most anything.

Karl (Early 20s) - Jeff's stuffiness and anxiety sometime cramp your easy-going style, but you're too laid-back to care - or even really notice. Your hair just sort of falls that way naturally, and you have an equally easy time with the ladies. You're the sort of guy other guys love to hate, but can't because you're so damn likeable. You're not all too sure of what you're doing in college, other than to help Jeff loosen up, if even just a little bit.

Amanda (Early 20s) - You were a tomboy until the guys started acting all weird around you and, in fact, have always preferred the company of men. You're always willing to go with the flow and see where the evening takes you, and are pathologically none-judgmental. You have a natural curiosity in watching situations play out. Other women seem down-right offended by your breezy sort of beauty, but you take little care in your looks - you just wake up looking that way.

Paige (Early 20s) - You show Jeff how much you love him by all the effort you put into improving him. You don't consider yourself bossy, though Karl (and most other people) might say different - you're a "prudent planner". You put create effort into your appearance and are never without a tube of lipstick. You not-so-secretly resent Karl's lasting influence on Jeff and are coyly maneuvering him away. You are an excellent candidate for a purse-dog.

If you're interested in auditioning, drop by between 2 and 6pm at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre (732 Charlotte Street, Fredericton) on May 24th and signs will lead you down to the basement where the Film Co-op resource centre is located. If you have any questions, e-mail me at chris_fulton_vmw@hotmail.com
