NBFC E-news - Thur, May 1, 2008
Spotlight!
SPECIAL THANK YOU
I just want to take a moment to thank all the fabulous people who were associated with "Diplomatic Relations" for such a great time.
I was totally impressed with the enthusiasm, the dedication and the quality of the work in all parts of the 'operation' right from the great scripts through the casting process to those memorable looooong days on set. I can't wait to see the finished product. It was a pleasure to work with all those folks and I would do it again in an instant.
I especially want to say what a pleasure it was to work with Patricia Leger. Her portrayal of Julia was all class and quality.
Thanks, also, to all the hard-working people who keep the NBFC alive and well. Good work!! Now, if we could just move all of you, and the NBFC, to Saint John . . .
Take care, be well and happy.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

I joined the New Brunswick Filmmakers' Co-operative in 1982, became a member of its board of directors within the year, its vice president soon after, and then its president from 1986 until 1991.
Upon finishing my University degree, I left both the Film Co-op and
the country, and lived the cliché of an expatriate in Paris until the
millennium. Since returning, I have been involved in minor roles on
several locally shot features, "Canada-Russia '72" being the most
recent, as well as on independent productions, "Pray, My Children"
being the most recent of those.
My current interest is to work on films in capacities which I have not yet had the opportunity to fully explore. Burgundy is my favourite color.

WRITERS ROOST 2008 - NEW ROOSTER LEAD BRONWEN MOSHER
I have been telling stories ever since I began doing anything that wasn't purely for survival. For me, carefully crafted communication is somewhat of an obsession.
Having written for television, newspaper, a variety of business formats, and oodles of creative writing ventures, I became enthralled with writing for visual media during a recent 3 year stint in Vancouver. A picture is said to paint a thousand words, so how can one paint the thousand pictures needed to drive the progression of a movie in just 100 short pages? The screenplay format allows the writer to show complex emotional development through images and metaphors of action. While this can be challenging, when executed properly, the result is intensely rewarding.
After completing an extensive private study of the screenwriting process, I joined a Vancouver group of working writers. I learned much from this dynamic bunch and am now a firm believer that the best screenplays may be written by one, but they are always edited by many.
I am excited to be back in Fredericton and am looking forward to connecting with other storycrafters! I am thrilled about being given the opportunity to help incubate an environment where blank pages are turned into works of genius and where writers come together to find solutions and to learn from each others' strengths.
I will be spending my summer volunteering for the Film Co-op, so if you can use my skills I will be happy to help out!

FREDERICTON - FILM SCREENING EVENT
ASIAN HERITAGE SOCIETY OF NB PRESENTS
Obachan's Garden
(free admission)
Friday May 2, 2008 7:00pm
Location: Marshall D'Avray Hall, UNB Room 143 (Dugald Blue Auditorium)
Director: Linda Ohama, 2001, 94 min
In 1923, Asayo Murakami left Hiroshima and settled in a fishing village in Steveston, BC. Her family remembers a happy woman who sang, danced and nurtured a colourful flower garden, but underneath, the memory of what she left in Japan haunted her deeply.
Delicately peeling back the layers of her grandmother Asayo's life, filmmaker Linda Ohama discovers a painful, buried past. In poignant interviews, Obachan, now 103 years old, recalls life in Japan, her arrival in Canada as a picture bride, her determination to marry a man of her choice, the bombing of Hiroshima and the forced relocation of her family during World War II.
Beautifully rendered dramatic sequences are merged with an exquisite collection of memories, feelings, images and voices. Culminating in an emotional reunion with a long-lost daughter, this film is an intensely personal reflection of Japanese-Canadian history and a testament to one woman's incredible endurance and spirit.

SAINT JOHN - FILM PIX SCREENING EVENT
BLACK COMEDY ‘IN BRUGES’ is coming to Saint John!
FP bruges leads dir > Actors Brendan Gleeson (left) and Colin Farrell (right) with writer/director Martin McDonagh (centre) on the set of IN BRUGES, an Alliance Films release.
Saint John, NB - It’s the ‘raved about’ black comedy that opened the prestigious Sundance Festival just weeks ago, and now, continuing its tradition of excellence in screened films, Film Pix, in association with BMO Nesbitt Burns, is providing an exclusive one-time screening of this “morality tale with a distinctly Coen-ish air” (Sky Movies) for Greater Saint John residents, on Tuesday, May 06!
IN BRUGES, the tale of two hit men and a bad hit, is indeed a hit with the world’s leading reviewers. Described as “brilliant” (The Advocate), “insanely clever” (Houston Chronicle), and “haunting and hypnotic” (Rolling Stone), IN BRUGES is a sure-fire, fast shooting movie that takes top marks in the entertainment category.
Hit men Ray and Ken have been ordered to Bruges, Belgium, just before Christmas, by their London boss, to hide out and await orders. Totally out of place in an ancient, genteel town of lovely canals and quaint cobbled streets, the two hit men make the best of it by posing as tourists. Ray hates the place, while Ken finds his inner self emerging, coaxed on by the tranquility of the area. As they wait for their boss’s call, their charade takes on a surreal edge as they mingle with locals, tourists, a dwarf American actor shooting a European art film, Dutch prostitutes, and violent art.
AUDIENCE NOTE > film contains profanity and violence.
Reduced-price ($9), advance tickets for IN BRUGES are available now at Thai Hut on King Street Uptown and on Millidge Avenue, and at West Side Variety and Video on Main Street. Full-price ($10) rush tickets, if available, at the door immediately before the film.
Please visit www.filmpix.ca for the movie trailer, online tickets, write-up and photos, and full details on The Film Pix Scholarship for Aspiring Filmmakers, for Greater Saint John youth. Film Pix may also be found on Facebook.
Film Pix is the funding engine behind film scholarships for Greater Saint John youth. It is a locally driven, volunteer managed film series with ‘first Tuesday of each month’ screenings of new release, 35mm films in a cinema setting. Through corporate sponsorship support and box office proceeds from the movie-going public, Film Pix is poised to present its first-ever film scholarship to a deserving local student who will undertake advanced film training as part of their career path.
Film Pix is proud to have a working arrangement with Film Circuit, a division of the highly respected Toronto International Film Festival Group, and with Canada’s major film distributors. Wearing the slogan ‘Film Pix – The Best Indie Films in the World. Film Scholarships for Local Youth.’, Film Pix has been operating proudly in Saint John, New Brunswick, since 2004.

East Coast Sessions is for music lovers. Its goal is to present some of Atlantic Canada's finest young recording artists in a unique and intimate setting, taped in front of a live audience. This week's show features David Myles (Fredericton) and Rose Cousins.
The new local series "Short Film Face-off", as part of the CBC Maritimes Spring Schedule, is on Wednesday nights at 7 pm. In the fifth week of the series, May 14, viewers will be asked to choose their favorite film from four semi-finalists picked by the panel over the first four weeks. The audience will be invited to call a toll-free number or go online to vote. The winning filmmaker will be announced on the series finale, May 21, and will receive a CBC production deal for their next film.
