Spotlight!

AS SEEN FROM HERE

By Jim Lavoie

Did you know that Joe Blades and Chris Nyarady are 2008 Barry Award winners for their work on CHSR (97.9 FM)?

Chris was a winner in the general music category for his "Powertime Variety Hour" while Joe Blades picked up his 4th Barry this time for "spoken word". His show is called "Ashes, Paper & Beans"  and airs Tuesdays from 7-8 p.m.  http://www.joeblades.com

The Barry Awards are named after Barry Yoell one of the original staff members back in the day. All shows are juried by an in-house committee and public input for consideration each year. CHSR is a campus based community radio station in Fredericton.

Last week, I erroneously stated that Lita Llewellyn would be a guest on "That Sunday Show" hosted by Kelly McGee and then to compound matters I gave the wrong times for the broadcast. After rendering my humble apologies to Kelly, I can announce that the show will actually be broadcast on Sunday, May 25 at KHJ (8:00 a.m.) and again at (8:30 a.m) on Capital FM 106.9.

Auditions for Saint John Film Co-op member Richard MacQueen's "Dead to The World" (DTTW) were held in Saint John and Fredericton this past weekend. From 12pm - 9pm in each city.

In Fredericton, many actors of all ages and walks of life descended on the Charlotte Street Art Centre to strut their stuff in the hopes of gaining a role in this NB Film Co-op, CBC Television and NB Film supported pilot.

This high attendance demonstrates that many people are interested in being part of a New Brunswick film or television project. The support of NB Film and CBC and the technical and resource support provided by the NB Film Co-operative will keep the crew and talent pool busy. Having had the opportunity to know the film credits of many of those who auditioned, it is clear that Director Richard MacQueen will have an extensive palate to draw from for his project.

NBFC MEMBER WINS 2008 ARTS SCHOLARSHIP FROM ARTSNB

Jeff Crawford has been selected as a recipient for a prestigious scholarship: the 2008 Arts Scholarship from ARTSNB. This highly competitive scholarship is valued at $2,500, and has recognized Jeff as having outstanding potential as an artist in the Visual Arts.

Born and raised in Burton, New Brunswick, Jeff has been involved in the entertainment industry since 1999. He started working with Theatre New Brunswick and also the Fredericton Playhouse. In 2001, he ventured to Toronto for 3 years studying Technical Theatre Production at Ryerson University. During his time in Toronto, he was involved with many short film ventures, working with Radio & TV Arts students from Ryerson.

After his 2nd year in Toronto, he was offered the job as Technical Director for Toronto Dance Theatre, where he worked for about a year before returning to the NB joining TNB as a Lighting Technician after which he moved on to join the Fredericton Playhouse as the Lighting Department Head until June of 2007. During these years he also freelanced to theatre companies like Ships Company Theatre, Live Bait Theatre, and Theatre St. Thomas.

He has also been staying involved with the film sector as a Stills Photographer, which to date he has been involved with 4 films within the last calendar year. It all started with his involvement in "Cold Day In Hell" Directed by Matt Brown & Produced by Gary Ferguson (Film Co-op members), which won 3 Silver Wave Film Festival awards in 2006 including 'Best NB Short Drama'.

Jeff is currently expanding his photography skill & knowledge at the NB College of Craft & Design, coming to the closing of the 1st of the 2 yr Specialty Photography program. GRAND BARACHOIS - SHOOTING 'CELL'

Recently my husband, Michael Aronson, wrote another of his deranged little scripts and I set out to turn it into a movie. It was short and dark, offered the opportunity for latex special effects, and gave me the chance to experiment with evoking some tight, disturbed feelings. You know, all that fun stuff. We thought we could achieve this alone; no need to involve anyone else.

As I began working with the script, breaking it down, I started to realize that this definitely needed more than just the two of us. For one thing, we needed an actor who looked less healthy and loveable than Michael. For another thing, we needed someone to shoot while I directed and manned the effects. For another thing, we needed a camera!

Then Cat reminded me I was a member of the Film Co-op. I guess that might sound ridiculous, but, you see, I have never been a member of any sort of Co-op before. It's only starting to dawn on me the potential of the resources connected to this membership. More importantly, it's starting to sink in that the folks involved with the Co-op are really friendly and seem only too happy to help.

I still had concern over the distance from Shediac to Fredericton. Yes, only a couple of hours, but it still seemed that trying to arrange something with Fredericton people and equipment would become too complicated for the scope of this project. Of course, Cat again reminded me of the accessibility of the members, because of course, there are Moncton members, you know.

Danny Thebeau was quick to offer his services as cameraman and gaffer. Donovan Richard came on board as soundman and grip with equal enthusiasm. With almost no effort, I had the small crew I needed, and all the equipment concerns were taken care of as well - a huge bonus!

The shoot day went quickly and smoothly, and everyone had a fun time. It was tight and warm working in that tiny room, but spirits never waned and we achieved all the shots we had set out to. Dan's camera work was excellent, the lighting looked fantastic, and Donovan got great sound. Our actor was well-rehearsed and in top form, Michael whipped up some great craft services, and the gooey ugly messy gory special effect turned out just lovely.

It really was an uplifting day, and we had a nice chat and some relaxing beers before everyone went their separate ways. It was really great to be reminded of what a supportive bunch of people are involved with the Co-op.

I'm in the editing process now for "Cell" and hope to arrive at the final edit by June. It's going together really well and seems to have a life of its own! Thanks again to Danny and Donovan and the NB Film Co-op for helping to realize a fun project!

IMPROVISATION AND ACTING EXERCISES
(Intermediate- Hands on)
May 25, Sunday, 11 am - 5 pm
Instructor: Dennis Poirier
Location: New Brunswick Film Co-op
(732 Charlotte Street, Fredericton)
Charlotte Street Arts Centre
Fee: $20 For Film Co-op Members
$30 For Non-Members

Class Limit: 8

Improvisation and acting exercises will explore how an aspiring actor can mentally prepare for a given role. Often on stage and sometimes film, actors will forget a line; it happens. It can throw off a whole scene if the actor and others on set can't recover.

Freezing is an actor's worst fear, because it takes away the element of telling a story away from the audience or mood the filmmaker is trying to create. On true film (35mm, 16mm or 8mm) it is not as simple as "getting it right" on the next take. Film stock is expensive.

On Mini DV and HD, the actor may think he or she has unlimited retakes, but you risk making a long shooting day longer than it should. Improvisation is a useful tool to help fill in the voids when needed. It does not mean you should constantly go off script, but if you can add unscripted actions and proper emotional reactions to a scene; the director will love you for it. Your goal should not to give continuity/script supervisor and the director headaches, but an actor should strive to add to the scene to make it look plausible and true to the character.

INSTRUCTOR'S BIOGRAPHY

Dennis Poirier is a writer and actor in Fredericton New Brunswick. With a growing resume of NB Filmmaker's Co-op films, he is also involved in theatre with 'Les Fous de la Scène', a French community theatre group, NoteaBle Acts and occasionally improv.

Dennis enjoys the higher emotional threshold of playing villains on film, even if his true demeanor is quite opposite. He is thrilled he has more opportunities to act on stage and film in the capital city and actively seeks training and workshops all over NB to improve his ability to step away from his real life shoes.

FREDERICTON - ASIAN HERITAGE SOCIETY OF NB PRESENTS

ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL SPECIAL SCREENING EVENT

CONTINUOUS JOURNEY
2004, 87 minutes
(free admission)

Friday May 23, 2008 7:00pm

Location: Marshall D'Avray Hall, UNB Room 143 (Dugald Blue Auditorium)

In 1914, Gurdit Singh, a Sikh entrepreneur based in Singapore, chartered a Japanese ship, the Komagata Maru, to carry Indian immigrants to Canada. On May 23, 1914, the ship arrived in Vancouver Harbour with 376 passengers aboard: 340 Sikhs; 24 Muslims and 12 Hindus. Many of the men on-board were veterans of the British Indian Army and believed that it was their right as British subjects to settle anywhere in the Empire they had fought to defend and expand. They were wrong...

Continuous Journey is an inquiry into the largely ignored history of Canada's exclusion of the South Asians by a little known immigration policy called the Continuous Journey Regulation of 1908. Unlike the Chinese and the Japanese, people from British India were excluded by a regulation that appeared fair, but in reality, was an effective way of keeping people from India out of Canada until 1948. Thus began a dramatic stand-off which would escalate over the course of two months, becoming one of the most infamous incidents in Canadian history.

During their two-month detention in the harbour, Canadian authorities drove the passengers to the brink of thirst and starvation. The stand-off was broken with the intervention of Prime Minister Robert Borden who also called in a Canadian battleship to underline his stance. On 21 July, over two-hundred fully armed local militia lined the shore, while The Rainbow, prepared for confrontation on the sea. All of Vancouver was out for the spectacle. Major confrontation was averted through eleventh-hour negotiations, and in the end, provisions for the Komagata Maru's return journey were provided. The consequences of the incident were dire though. Upon its return to India, the Komagata Maru encountered hostile British authorities. Over forty people went missing or were killed.

New Brunswick's "Snow Angel" LITA LLEWELLYN
Shooting For the Stars
By Jim Lavoie

Fredericton native Lita Llewellyn plays a principal role in David Gordon Green`s "Snow Angels", a newly released Canadian feature film. Fresh off a very successful run in the United States (from LA to New York), the movie is now showing in Halifax and garnering rave reviews. In fact, CTV film critic Richard Crouse (Reel to Real) compares it to the "Sweet Hereafter", calling it the best new movie of the year to date!

"Snow Angels" is based on a novel by Stewart O'Nan and stars Sam Rockwell, Kate Beckinsale, Nicky Katt and Michael Angarano. The screen adaptation is based on the relationship between Rockwell (Glenn) and Beckinsale (Annie) as a recently divorced couple with a daughter in the mix. They had been high school lovers who subsequently married. The story line of their lives is intertwined with several others including Angarano (Arthur). Arthur now a teenager was once babysat by Annie. We see his characters evolution, his parents and others like Lita Llewellyn (Tricia Farr) amidst the turmoil of divorce. Captured within this emotional cauldron, relationships are built while others are destroyed.

"This was the most amazing production I have ever been associated with" said an exuberant Llewellyn.

"David Gordon Green is a genius yet down to earth and so actor friendly. The cast was fantastic to work with and along with the crew the team chemistry was vibrant."

This was obviously apparent to others as a high end New York film magazine "Big" devoted their entire Fall issue (October 2007) to "Snow Angels". One of their editors and photographers was on the set location (Halifax) to document, interview and photograph proceedings. Llewellyn, in her first film bedroom scene with Nicky Katt, was included in the "Big" pictorial presentation.

Since wrapping "Snow Angels" the 30 year old Llewellyn has acted in the film version of the "Memory Keepers Daughter" with Dermot Mulroney, Emily Watson and Gretchen Mol. This film has been shown on American television stations. She also played the lead (Audrey) in "Back In Your Arms" written by Tony Sekulich and directed by Joel Thompson (Film Co-op members). Diplomatic Relations, the end result of the Film and Television Certificate Programme offered by the New Brunswick Film Co-operative is in the editing process now. "Back In Your Arms" is one of three stories within the Diplomatic Relations anthology. Llewellyn calls her role "amazing" and said, "it is beautifully written, a heart rending love story of lost love and what could have been."

Llewellyn is in high demand these days. She is currently being considered for a role on the popular and controversial Showcase Network series "G-Spot." The series is normally shot in Vancouver but series executive announced that 8 episodes will shot in Halifax in the near future (Diplomatic Relations Mentor Darlene Lewis is working on this project) . Another possibility for Llewellyn is a role in a very secretive project, no details available or provided, that is referred to as simply "Project X."

Llewellyn was live on air recently with popular and award winning radio host Joe Blades on his CHSR (97.9 FM) Tuesday night (7-8) radio show "Ashes, Paper & Beans" (Fredericton's Writing and Art Show.) When Joe asked her about her vision for the future of the film and television industry in New Brunswick she responded enthusiastically. "Given the abundance of talent in whatever capacity you could think of and the natural beauty of New Brunswick the potential is unlimited. Given the support of the provincial government and New Brunswick Film and the efforts of the New Brunswick Film Co-operative in its training and production programmes, we match the creative and technical expertise in film in any other province and what I and others are advocating for is increased opportunity within New Brunswick. Where self doubt was once prevalent I see the foundation of skilled confidence pushing us forward."

Lita is a fully accredited member of the actor and recording artists guild (ACTRA) and has over 16 television and film production actor credits. Of those, 10 have been in a lead or supporting lead role (visit the Internet Movie Database (IMDB) for listings etc..). In addition to the stellar cast of "Snow Angels" she has acted with Rob Lowe, Julia Ormond, David Boreanz and Wendy Crewson. Her favorite actor is Kate Winslett and she aspires to act with her one day. Before you dismiss this as being whimsical you should know that as a young actress, she like many other young girls dreamed of working with Megan Follows (Anne of Green Gables). After years of hard work, studies and intensive training she fulfilled her goal by acting in a movie with Megan Follows in CBC`s 2004 feature film "Open Heart."

Although she ultimately focused on acting (began at 8 years old) as a career path it was not for a lack of other options. She is a highly skilled dancer (started at the age of 4) who received intensive training in Ballet, Jazz, Modern & Latin dance. In fact, she was offered a fully paid scholarship to attend the renowned Alvin Alley School of Dance in New York City. She is fluently bilingual, master of several dialects and also a trained singer. She was trained as a Mezzo soprano by Maureen Steeves and also coached by Sheri Saunders.

In 1993, she was a member of Characters Incorporated and from the ages of 16-19 toured professionally. She has performed in front of crowds as large as 30,000. She was well served in this fast paced environment which requires endurance by her athletic skills acquired in kickboxing, swimming, hiking, skiing and of course dance. Characters Inc. was a song and dance troupe, based out of Fredericton which traveled all over the world singing, dancing and acting as goodwill ambassadors for New Brunswick and Canada. Llewellyn had a lead role amongst the 30 performers making up the group. Their repertoire was contemporary stuff, 40's, 50's and all the way up from there. They sang about New Brunswick, the Maritimes and Canada. Some of her favorite performances were in Tokyo, Japan and Fiji and singing O Canada prior to a Blue Jays baseball game in Toronto. Her group was the backup dancers for Alanis Morrissette (pre Jagged Little Pill days) on a CBC television special.

Upon graduation from Fredericton High School (1993) she was involved with drama group at Saint Thomas University before moving on to York University and the York Theatre. At York she was the winner of the Outstanding Performance Award- Colin BernHardt - as the Most Promising Newcomer. It was an obvious foreshadowing of what was to come. Like many others, due to cash flow or lack of, she left university early, dove into the acting pool and has not looked back.

“Something that is often overlooked is that every movie begins and ends with the producer. A producer must be able to identify great material, develop it, find the right actors who enhance it, and make it with fiscal responsibility.”

MUSIC VIDEO HELP NEEDED

Hello fellow Film Co-op members! I'm Alex Donnelly who recently joined the Film Co-op in late winter. I will be attending film school in Toronto in the fall and would like to get as much experience before hand as possible. I have recently decided to promote my friend Evan LeBlanc, a young musician from Nackawic. He has an incredible voice, he does solo acoustic and is very interested in making an album; I would like to help. I am going to be making a music video for one of his songs and recording a hand full of songs to create an album.

I myself will need help with this, I am not experienced in audio engineering and syncing an audio track to a video one. If anyone has any tips, hints, or helpful information for me, I would really appreciate it. The other thing that I am tracking down is a recording studio. The price to record an album in a professional studio is out of reach, so if there is anyone who has a recording studio at home or at their disposable that would like to help with this production, it would be greatly appreciated. Again, if anyone can help in any way - jump right in! give me an email as soon as you can, we are planning to start this in mid June/July.

As well, if anyone is interested in seeing Evan perform live, he will be at the Fredericton Charlotte Street Art Centre (Doodles Café) on June 27th, I'm not sure of the time yet, but it will be to raise money for production costs. Tickets will be 10$ a head and available through me or Doodles Café.

Thanks again everyone!

FREDERICTON - ACTORS NEEDED!

The Morning After, Brit Sparrow's new short comedy, is set to film this summer, with the following volunteer actor roles up for grabs:

Jeff (Early 20s) - A bookish, buttoned-down Young Republican, you have a five-year plan and a properly diversified stock portfolio. You enjoy "fun" as much as the next fellow, but your studies and your overly possessive girlfriend, Paige, leave little time for manly chumming with your carefree (you'd say "irresponsible") boyhood pal, Karl. You lack confidence in general, with woman especially, and so are relieved to have a girl like Paige to call the shots for you. And you worry - like, a lot - and about most anything.

Karl (Early 20s) - Jeff's stuffiness and anxiety sometime cramp your easy-going style, but you're too laid-back to care - or even really notice. Your hair just sort of falls that way naturally, and you have an equally easy time with the ladies. You're the sort of guy other guys love to hate, but can't because you're so damn likeable. You're not all too sure of what you're doing in college, other than to help Jeff loosen up, if even just a little bit.

Amanda (Early 20s) - You were a tomboy until the guys started acting all weird around you and, in fact, have always preferred the company of men. You're always willing to go with the flow and see where the evening takes you, and are pathologically none-judgmental. You have a natural curiosity in watching situations play out. Other women seem down-right offended by your breezy sort of beauty, but you take little care in your looks - you just wake up looking that way.

Paige (Early 20s) - You show Jeff how much you love him by all the effort you put into improving him. You don't consider yourself bossy, though Karl (and most other people) might say different - you're a "prudent planner". You put create effort into your appearance and are never without a tube of lipstick. You not-so-secretly resent Karl's lasting influence on Jeff and are coyly maneuvering him away. You are an excellent candidate for a purse-dog.

If you're interested in auditioning, drop by between 2 and 6pm at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre (732 Charlotte Street, Fredericton) on May 24th and signs will lead you down to the basement where the Film Co-op resource centre is located. If you have any questions, e-mail me at chris_fulton_vmw@hotmail.com
