HOLD THE PRESS! - RENEWED FREDERICTON MEMBER MAGGIE LYONS
I'm happy to have renewed my membership with the NB Film Co-op. For those of you who remember me, the wheelchair is history. It may seem hard to believe. Some days it's still a shock to myself: standing, walking, climbing stairs.
It's been less than 5 months that I have been doing everything without difficulty now. I have a whole new life and there is a lot to do now that I am back on my feet. I have already begun to work on a film project about my experience.
I hope do as much as possible now that I'm strong and healthy
Cheers!!

A Tale of Two Cities
Distance is a non-issue as Chris Pauley scores NB director's inaugural short film.
Chris Pauley composed an appropriately evocative, moody score for Bunthivy Nou's
A Lion's Tale.
Yes, as shocking an admission as it is, such random connections do exist in the film community, and the tenuous connection between 12-sided dice and Curve Productions was the starting point for this project. "I knew that Sarah Ketcheson, wife of one of my old high school buddies, was acting in a film", Chris Pauley reports, "so I made contact about 10 months ago with the director, offering to help out when the time came." Once the film was completed, Bunthivy did contact Chris asking for some musical support for her project.
"It was a real treat working with Chris", Bunthivy says. "The development and use of original music was a fairly new process for me as a filmmaker, and he was really patient and listened to what I wanted."
The film deals with serious subject matter, addressing the challenges faced by a single mother (Ketcheson) who finds herself caught on the horns of a major moral dilemma while protecting her son from bullies. "The music certainly brought another layer to the story" says Nou, "and helped made the film stronger in the end."
"The music is dark", says Chris, "but never entirely hopeless, and by the end it reaches a sort of antiphonal blessing over the closing credits. And I did get to lighten up at one point, because I had to create some source music heard on a radio in the background. So if you notice a cheesy zydeco band in the background, I have to take the blame for that as well!"
Despite the fact that Bunthivy lives in Fredericton, NB, and Chris in Halifax, there was never a sense that their collaboration was compromised. "Distance was never a factor", she explains. "With emails and phone and FTP, we were able to get the work done without any issues."
Bunthivy hopes to screen her film at numerous film festivals over the coming months - for more information about the film, its cast and crew, visit the official website here
To check out Curve Productions go to their website at: www.curveproductionsinc.com
Bunthivy Nou received a grant to produce her calling card short film through the Short Film Venture Program. NB Film gives out the much needed cash component of the grant and the New Brunswick Filmmakers' Co-operative provides the full complimentary professional equipment package, volunteer member crew resources as well as post production facility access.

ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL SPECIAL SCREENING EVENT

Location: Marshall D'Avray Hall, UNB Room 143 (Dugald Blue Auditorium)
Sleeping Tigers: The Asahi Baseball Story
Directed by: Jari Osborne, 2003, 50 min
In pre-WWII Vancouver the Asahi baseball team was unbeatable, outplaying the taller Caucasian teams and winning the prestigious Pacific Northwest Championship for five straight years. When Pearl Harbor was bombed, the Canadian government declared war against Japan and sent every person of Japanese descent, whether born in Canada or not, to internment camps. Faced with hardship and isolation, the former Asahi members survived by playing baseball. Soon attracting the interest of the RCMP and local townspeople, this quintessential North American game helped to break down racial and cultural barriers.
When Strangers Re-Unite
Directed by: Marie Boti, Florchita Bautista, 1999, 52 min
Every year thousands of women enter Canada as domestic servants, the majority of them from the Philippines. Leaving their own children and families behind, they can spend many isolated years cooking, cleaning and caring for others. Sending much of their wages back home, they dream of the day their families can join them. When Strangers Re-Unite looks at what happens after years of separation and sacrifice. Virtual strangers at the airport, family members face a confusing journey of rebuilding relationships while adapting to an often unwelcoming environment. Within the Filipino community in Canada, several groups and organizations have been actively working for the rights and welfare of migrant workers. It is largely thanks to them that most of these families are able to overcome what can seem like insurmountable obstacles.

SAINT JOHN - FILM PIX PRESENTS: THE STONE ANGEL
* NOMINATED - GRAND PRIX – TOKYO INT’L FILM FESTIVAL
(Academy Award-winning actor Ellen Burstyn as Hagar Shipley - photo courtesy of Alliance Films)
“I carried my chains within me, and they spread out from me and shackled all I touched.”
Hagar Shipley in the Margaret Laurence novel The Stone Angel
Film Pix, Greater Saint John’s volunteer-run, community film series, proudly presents, in association with BMO Nesbitt Burns, the brilliant big screen adaptation of the much celebrated Margaret Laurence novel, THE STONE ANGEL, for an exclusive, one-time screening at 7 PM, Tuesday, June 03, at host venue Empire Studio 10 Cinemas.
CAST > With a dream team of seriously talented actors that includes the legendary, Academy Award winning ELLEN BURSTYN, Academy Award nominee (and fellow Maritimer) ELLEN PAGE, KEVIN ZEGERS, COLE HAUSER, DYLAN BAKER, and newcomer CHRISTINE HORNE, the film boasts superb acting and authenticity of characters, all crafted in collaboration with director Kari Skogland, an Ottawa native, listed by Hollywood Reporter as one of the Top Ten Directors to Watch.
STORY > Hagar Currie/Shipley, an intensely proud and independent woman of Scottish ancestry, is as immovable as the massive Italian stone angel that her father imported a lifetime ago, to tower over her family’s burial plot. As she nears the end of her own life, and is flatly informed by her own son that she’s being forced into a rest home, she considers it worse than death and runs away, pushing her aged, frail body over the miles to the seaside home of her youth, where she sits in anger and defiance, amidst the ruins and sand fleas, reflecting on stubborn pride and how it has been a destructive force in every relationship in her life. For the full story, please visit www.filmpix.ca/jun032008film.htm.
ADVANCE TICKETS > Available now; save $1 per ticket! Cash-only $9 tickets at Thai Hut on King Street and on Millidge Avenue, and at West Side Variety and Video, Main Street, West; and, with major credit card, online at www.filmpix.ca/tixadvanceonline.htm.
