FREDERICTON: A CULTURAL CAPITAL FILM PROJECT
NBFC E-news - Thur, May 8, 2008
Spotlight!
FREDERICTON - A CULTURAL CAPITAL PROJECT
Introduction
For 2009, the Department of Canadian Heritage has designated Fredericton as a Cultural Capital of Canada. The City has partnered with several groups to undertake cultural activities next year and the New Brunswick Filmmakers’ Co-operative is excited to be among the groups participating.
The New Brunswick Film Co-op is celebrating its 30th anniversary next year. It is looking forward to undertaking an exciting community-based film project that will not only help mark the occasion, but leave a lasting legacy.
The theme of the project is Fredericton: A Cultural Capital.
The Project
Between July 2008 and the end of 2009, the film co-op will produce 10 short film and video projects. The films will run between one and ten minutes in length. The productions will be dramatic, documentary, animated or a combination of styles.
Topics can include but are not limited to: biographical sketches of notable Frederictonians, significant historical events, multicultural and Aboriginal stories, inventors, tall tales, the St. John River, the arts, built heritage, politics, organizations etc.
Scripts Wanted
Over May and June 2008, the Co-op is inviting the public to submit short scripts that define Fredericton as a cultural capital. You do not have to be a filmmaker to submit a script. Historians, storytellers, artists, anyone with a good story is welcome to participate.
It is expected that the script should describe a story in some detail, rather than suggesting a topic on which to base a film. The story could explore the connection between Fredericton’s past and present and could consider aspects of its culture and heritage in a local and global context. The content of the films should be suitable for a general audience.
Although the project is set in Fredericton, it is open to all residents of New Brunswick. Fredericton is the Provincial Capital and as such belongs to all New Brunswickers alike.

NEW MONCTON MEMBER KELSEY CURRIE
Kelsey Currie currently resides in Moncton, New Brunswick where he will be living until he completes his university degree. He is studying business at Mount Allison University. Outside of school he does construction on houses for work and he also likes to keep fit. He has always had a strong interest in film and is eager to dedicate much of his free time towards it with the hope of building a future in the Film community.
------------------------------------------------------------------
HOLD THE PRESS! - RENEWED PETITCODIAC MEMBER RALF BINDELS
The bucolic New Brunswick town of Petitcodiac, New Brunswick may seem like an unlikely home base for a man pursuing a successful international career as a composer.
But for Film Coop member Ralf Cassidy Bindels, the comparative isolation from industry centres like New York, Los Angeles and Toronto hasn't proven to be a barrier at all. When he emigrated to Canada from Germany he was drawn to the small town lifestyle in New Brunswick, finding it stimulated him musically - and also that clients and collaborators seek him out regardless of where they're located.
They should. He's been actively involved in the music and recording industries for over fifteen years, among many other projects remixing the music of Moby and Depeche Mode, working as a part of a production team that included Carlos Peron of Yello, and receiving a German Film Award for one of his soundtracks.
Local film director Doug Sutherland points out that, " Composing music for film is an enormously difficult discipline - Ralf has a gift not only for composition but an innate understanding of how music enhances a story, not just complements it. That, and he's terrific to work with."
Some of Ralf's accomplishments in composing for film, t.v. and multimedia includes Fade to Black (feature film), Table Hockey - the movie (documentary), The Backup Man (feature film), Believe (t.v. special) and The City of Sinners and Saints (online game).
Beside the NB Film C-oop Ralf is also associated with The Guild of Canadian Film Composers and SOCAN. To learn more about his areas of work or to contact him visit his web side www.groovingfarm.com

SHEPHERD'S PIE & SUSHI A SENSE OF FAMILY
Friday May 9, 2008, 7:00pm
(free admission)
Location: Marshall D’Avray Hall, UNB Room 143 (Dugald Blue Auditorium)
Shepherd’s Pie and Sushi, 1998, 45 min Directed by Craig Anderl & Mieko Ouchi
Mieko Ouchi is half Celtic, half Japanese... and all Canadian. In 1993, Mieko, an actor, began researching a documentary about her grandfather, Edward Ouchi, a Japanese immigrant to Canada. Then she was cast to star in The War Between Us, a film on the World War II internment of 22,000 Japanese-Canadians--re-enacting a key episode in her own community's history. Part Japanese-Canadian history, part autobiography and family chronicle, Shepherd's Pie and Sushi looks at complex questions of personal and cultural identity with a light touch. Using archival
material, dramatic re-enactment, powerful scenes from The War Between Us and moving interviews with members of the Ouchi family, the film relates the early history of Japanese-Canadians and looks at Mieko's and her family's struggles with their own identities.
A Sense of Family, 1980, 54 min Directed by: Paul Lang
This one-hour film charts East Indian immigration from the early 1900s to the present day. The families profiled relate their immigration experiences, as well as their struggle to integrate themselves economically and socially into Canada. These families also talk about their culture and its traditions, throwing the problems of their emigration to Canada into sharp relief.
Info: contact Jorge.vanslyke@ahsnb.org or 506 471-5679
This film series is proudly sponsored by the New Brunswick Filmmakers' Co-operative, City of Fredericton and the National Film Board of Canada.

TELEFILM SUPPORTED FILM TO SCREEN AT 61ST FESTIVAL DE CANNES
An extra-large Cannes-gratulations to filmmakers Anna Petras (producer), Justin Simms (director, writer, producer) and Jennice Ripley (executive producer), along with Joel Thomas Hynes (actor, writer, associate producer) and Sherry White (co-writer) on the selection of their feature Down To The Dirt which will screen at the 61st Festival de Cannes/ International Marche du Film as a part of the Telefilm's "Perspective Canada" series.
According to Frank Fagan of the Producers Association of Newfoundland, Down To The Dirt is the first Newfoundland and Labrador feature film to screen during the Marche du Film. The film will screen twice during the 10-day event, which is attended by 10,500 registered market participants, 3,000 members of the press and another 20,000 exhibitors, filmmakers, celebrities and film aficionados from around the world.
Down To The Dirt is a visceral, darkly humorous chronicle of the transformative power of love, and the improbable roads that lead to redemption. Thirty-year-old Keith Kavanagh ekes his way through life in a small town. A hard-drinking hooligan, he keeps his ragged collection of poetry a closely guarded secret, as secret as his regret for the shattered relationship with his alcoholic Father. When Keith meets the darkly exotic Natasha, his life is changed forever. Their turbulent relationship becomes the catalyst for self-discovery, joy and loss. Scary, sexy, and funny - and sometimes all three at once - Down To The Dirt is a raw and poignant feature film adaptation of the internationally acclaimed novel by Joel Thomas Hynes. Starring Hynes, along with Quebec actress Mylene Savoie, Robert Joy (CSI New York) and "Hard Core Logo's" Hugh Dillion, Down To The Dirt is the feature-length debut from the award- winning NL director Justin Simms and producer Anna Petras.
Down To The Dirt will screen as a part of the Telefilm Canada sponsored Perspective Canada series at Cannes. The Perspective Canada series was launched by national film funding agency Telefilm at the Cannes festival in 2006. This initiative was designed to promote and encourage sales of Canadian products in foreign markets by organizing screenings of selected Canadian titles for prospective buyers and festival attendees. The series features 10 titles each festival (5 English, 5 French) which are selected after a rigorous review process of all qualifying feature films produced within Canada each year.
[A shout out to any of you attending Cannes this year, the Women's Film Festival will be there so be sure to look us up at the Canadian Pavilion or through the Marche du Film!]

FREDERICTON - Casting Call for Film Co-op member film
We're looking for volunteer actors to be in a short film to be shot over two weekends in August. Shooting dates are August 24/25 and 30/31. The film is set at night so most likely shoots will be overnight. The roles are as follows:
Car Crash Victim
Helping Guy
Male Driver
Female Cop
2 Ambulance Attendants
Doctor
Step Mother
All roles are speaking, but the style of film will focus on visual reactions as well as dialog. We are mostly looking for actors of both genders in their 20s to 50s. There will also be several non-speaking roles in the form of extras on the street, so if you don't fit into any of these roles but would still like to audition, please come along. We may find a spot for you.
We will be having auditions on May 14 and 15 at 732 Charlotte Street, Charlotte Street Arts Centre in Fredericton from 6pm to 9pm in the Film Co-op downstairs resource centre. Follow the signs.
------------------------------------------------------
FREDERICTON - ACTORS NEEDED!
The Morning After, Brit Sparrow's new short comedy, is set to film this summer, with the following volunteer actor roles up for grabs:
Jeff (Early 20s) - A bookish, buttoned-down Young Republican, you have a five-year plan and a properly diversified stock portfolio. You enjoy "fun" as much as the next fellow, but your studies and your overly possessive girlfriend, Paige, leave little time for manly chumming with your carefree (you'd say "irresponsible") boyhood pal, Karl. You lack confidence in general, with woman especially, and so are relieved to have a girl like Paige to call the shots for you. And you worry - like, a lot - and about most anything.
Karl (Early 20s) - Jeff's stuffiness and anxiety sometime cramp your easy-going style, but you're too laid-back to care - or even really notice. Your hair just sort of falls that way naturally, and you have an equally easy time with the ladies. You're the sort of guy other guys love to hate, but can't because you're so damn likeable. You're not all too sure of what you're doing in college, other than to help Jeff loosen up, if even just a little bit.
Amanda (Early 20s) - You were a tomboy until the guys started acting all weird around you and, in fact, have always preferred the company of men. You're always willing to go with the flow and see where the evening takes you, and are pathologically none-judgmental. You have a natural curiosity in watching situations play out. Other women seem down-right offended by your breezy sort of beauty, but you take little care in your looks - you just wake up looking that way.
Paige (Early 20s)
- You show Jeff how much you love him by all the effort you put into improving him. You don't consider yourself bossy, though Karl (and most other people) might say different - you're a "prudent planner". You put create effort into your appearance and are never without a tube of lipstick. You not-so-secretly resent Karl's lasting influence on Jeff and are coyly maneuvering him away. You are an excellent candidate for a purse-dog.
If you're interested in auditioning, drop by between 2 and 6pm at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre (732 Charlotte Street, Fredericton) on May 24th and signs will lead you down to the basement where the Film Co-op resource centre is located. If you have any questions, e-mail me at chris_fulton_vmw@hotmail.com
