Spotlight!

Post Silver Wave

OUR APOLOGIES, WE FORGOT TO AWARD TWO MORE WINNERS!

We structure our awards in a specific way each year. We have two or three people nominated in each award category by the judges and then they choose a winner.

I didn't communicate this structure to the judges and they awarded the acting awards as below this year.

Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Comedy – Male

Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Comedy – Female

Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Drama – Male

Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Drama – Female

When I saw the names, going by our structure, I thought there was a winner listed for actor and actress and that the other two names were simply nominations as you all heard at the awards.

I'm very sorry to have stolen away this very special moment for Sara Ketchenson, Tim Turnell and the filmmakers who created the films they acted in; Bunthivy Nou and Steve Doiron at the Silver Wave awards.

The positive concerning this is that they won! We will be organizing a photo op for these two great actors so we can present them their statures and certificates and promote their special moments to everybody including the media.

My thanks to our wonderful jury Semra Yüksel, Walter Learnnig and Gretchen Kelbaugh who were terrific this year and were so nice considering the mishap.

So, what you will see on the Awards page for Silver Wave soon is this:

Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Drama – Male

WINNER: TIM TURNELL FOR THE FILM MY SELFISH LIFE – SAINT JOHN, NB

Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Comedy – Male

WINNER: JASON CHISHOLM FOR THE FILM ALL REVVED UP – MONCTON, NB

Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Drama – Female

WINNER: SARAH KETCHESON FOR THE FILM A LION'S TALE – FREDERICTON, NB

Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Comedy – Female

WINNER: TRACEY CARNEY FOR THE FILM ALL REVVED UP – MONCTON, NB

Congratulations to all the winners in the acting category and again my heartfelt apologies for the mix-up.

SILVER WAVE - THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

(Daily Gleaner photo of Josh Linton, award winning filmmaker for Gamers)

Well…where to start…first off. Thank you. This thank you is for all involved on the Gamers’ Manifesto production…as well as all of those who watched it and enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed being a part of it.

Secondly…oddly enough on Saturday night at the SWFF Awards, I was uncharacteristically bashful and at a loss for words…those who know me well…know this is usually not an issue for me. I love being the center of attention. However, Saturday night was different, a different kind of attention…I was not only making people laugh but I was also gaining their respect and as a film maker having the respect of other like-minded individuals with the talent that was showcased Saturday night was very humbling and I was honoured. This has always been my objective when I joined the NBFilm Coop in 2006- to be respected by my fellow film makers and friends and to be able to look back and say I did my best and be proud of my accomplishments and look forward to my future as a film maker.

That being said I’d like to thank those who escaped from my mind Saturday night, not from being ignorant of your contributions towards Gamers’ Manifesto but because I was in a state of awe the moment Jordan Roherty won his award for excellence in Music Composition. The moment I heard his music composition the presence it had and what it added to the film was glorious! It gave me chills!! Did you get chills?? In fact, I was still beaming over his award when they announced the nominees for Excellence in Art Direction…which ironically enough was between me and my lovely girlfriend Jennifer Chiasson. So, not only did I miss the opportunity for a few digs towards winning art direction over my girlfriend, I completely went blank…minus Dennis Poirier…which is funny…but it’s hard to get that guy outta your head…ask any of the ladies he has been with.

Well here is my chance to thank those that helped in art direction on Gamers’ Manifesto!! Donovan Richard…damn…we coated an entire wall with posters of his and the consoles that he hooked us up with and ahhh…gawd…it’s a never ending list….Thanks bud…appreciate it all.

Kiwi….everyone!! Kiwi hooked us up with that stellar blanket that Alpha’s perfectly molded butt formed the couch divot on and she also was generous with board games and neat little action figures too. Thank you Kiwi! Chafic…pac-man…bowser…rock band drum kit…dang those were key elements to making the set come alive. Thanks chief!

Glendon…thanks for the mentorship…I know I thanked you after I got back up on stage (which may have been inappropriate but kinda funny that I am so lame) but thanks again!! I think that covers Art Direction. As you can tell, this award does not go to an individual but to all those who graciously donated their toys and childhood memories- memories and keep sakes that they will just not let go of…and for that Gamers’ salutes you.

Ok…ok…before I get carried away…I need to thank the actors.

Chris, you owned that character!! Great job…the world is yours. Jason…is there anything you can’t do…Bun!! You are such an interesting person…typically I can read people…you…you however are mysterious and I like that…cause there are mysteries beyond the tri-force man!! And that’s Bun. Did anyone else love the scene where Bun says “I am a stereotypical female character as written by a male” and she looks at the camera!! I mean if that’s not the best look and reaction then, then I am crazy…Great job Bun...you are awesome…but because you are all equally awesome actors I cannot favour you in anyway so don’t tell Jason about this novel of a thank you when he gets back from Paris. He’ll think I am playing favorites. (Jason, I love you…in a manly kinda actor buddy ol’ pal kinda way where spooning and junipers are A-OK)

Since we are talking up Jason and his brilliance…His keen eye for detail and editing knack was well deserved. Good job Jason. I apologize for making a fool outta myself while trying to deliver your acceptance speech for Excellence in Picture Editing and pawning it off on Danny…I hope that it is not on youtube.

Since Danny is our Pawn in many shapes and forms…he was forming the shape of A.D. on this bad boy and actually if I remember correctly he was sick as a dog from travelling all over North America all week and then stopping in Fredericton before heading home to do us this service!! Great job Danny- you, to, are a breath a fresh air, like febreeze but in human form not bottle form.

Ok…I just realized at this rate my thank you to all involved in Gamers’ will be the only thing on the e-news this Thursday.

Ah well…how often to I get to yammer on and on about what a great crowd of people we have at NB Film Co-op. Therefore I must go on….please bear with me…the light is approaching and making choo choo noises…but if we hold our ground it’ll all be over soon.

Jeremy Robinson!! That’s right folks, the ever wonderful, ever charming Jeremy Robinson was our DOP. Not only does Jeremy make everyone around him feel like they could rule the world someday, but he also makes really good biscuits and gravy….and he’s great at getting lost…but that isn’t good you say…it sure is good…just means you get to hang with Jeremy more and you’ll feel like you could rule the world!

Mike Cowie…yes…Mike was pretty hesitant to work on Gamers’, cause Mike, as we all know is a busy boy. Doing this and doing that. But I straight up stopped Mike in the middle of the street one day and said “Mike, it’d be real great if you helped us out on this one…great crew…great cast”. He told me to go away…then I said “I’ll make you chocolate chip cookies.” He’s been my best friend ever since. Thanks Mike! Great job!

Alright…Everyone else falls in this category not because you are not appreciated. It’s just one of those things where you look up and there’s a sign flashing that says “Wrap it Up” So you make yourself a pita sandwich and hope it goes away…it doesn’t, so you just throw all you have into the last pita and hope the mayo holds it all together. Pita meaning paragraph and mayo meaning all the wonderful people I am about to mention. I realize now that not everyone can read or follow my mind and its random thought pattern…if you did…call me.

Chris Fulton and Laura…I’ll throw you in this cluster just to make you feel all warm and fuzzy. Thanks for being a friend. Fulton look over there…Laura I think a massage is in order…(shoulder massage) Better? Great! Fulton ok…you can stop looking for dust sparkles and cat dander over by the windowsill. Thank you for writing wonderful scripts and being wonderful friends. Oh…right…good job Co-director!!

Thanks to the NB Film Co-op! Cat and Tony!! look Cat I put two exclamation marks cause you’re worth a least two. The judges of this year's Silver Wave film Festival, thank you very much, I am very glad you enjoyed Gamers’ Manifesto.

Everyone else…You know who you are. Thank you.
Kris Gilbert of William F. White…We won’t let you down! THANK YOU!!

By Josh Linton

P.S. – say, does anyone else see these dang pebbles on the auditorium stage floor…I keep kicking them but they won’t go away. Scuffle, scuffle, scuffle.

Hey Gang! Cat! Tony! Thanks for everything – what a great visit to Fredericton! I loved every minute and I hope to return.

Please let me know if I can ever be of help out here in Calgary, filmmaking, festivals, or just sharing passion for movies.

If you can pass along a message to Jim Lavoie to drop me a line, that’d be great, too! And any of the NB Filmmakers’ Coop members can say hello to me, anytime!

Hi Cat and fellow Co-opers,

I'm finally coming down after a big crazy weekend of semi-unbelievableness. I've seen Sir Joshua's heart-felt and thorough thank-you and, since he's said it all for us at Fetal Films, I'll just slap a big ole' hear! hear! to the end of it. And maybe just a smidge more; thanks Laura for your encouragement in keeping me at the keyboard writing, in spite of the laundry that piles up and the trash that has to wait being put out.

While we're at it, thanks again to the crew, the Festival Volunteers and the great peeps at the Co-op. Nothing happens without them. One last shout-out: Danny Thebeau, you're a great mentor and your dedication to this project really showed over some particularly shiny summer weekends that you spent indoors with us while we free-loaded some editing suite time at your place. And I hope that shout-out carries over the pond because Jason Chisholm needs to hear once again that he's the man.

That's all for now. Thanks Silver Wave audience for a great reaction Saturday night - I know that Josh and I will be back there next year, cause that laughter is effin' addictive!

FREDERICTON - MONDAY NIGHT FILM SERIES

'TIS AUTUMN: THE SEARCH FOR JACKIE PARIS
November 24, 8pm at Tilley Hall, UNB Campus
Director: Raymond De Felitta
With: Peter Bogdonavich, Frank Whaley, James Moody
Run Time: 100 minutes
Country: USA
Year: 2008
Language: English
Distributor: KinoSmith

Jackie Paris was a legendary jazz vocalist and guitarist who performed with everyone from Dizzy Gillespie to Louis Armstrong. His records are mostly out of print and he disappeared so thoroughly that at least one major reference work listed him as dying in 1977 – before he suddenly resumed his career a quarter of a century later.

Director Raymone De Felitta filmed extensive interviews with the New Jersey-born Paris – before he actually did pass in 2004 – and offers speculation by everyone from musical historians to Paris’s family on why the singer’s career faded.

Essentially, the film is a real-life Citizen Kane in miniature. The dogged reporter (De Felitta) is fascinated with Paris’s unusual voice and becomes determined to find the man behind it. At first De Filitta believed that Paris had died in 1977, so he was delighted to find the performer alive and working on a comeback. De Felitta’s film goes back in time to look for more biographical information about the elusive singer: his childhood and Italian-American family life in Nutley, New Jersey, in the thirties; his rise within the jazz world; his work with greats like Thelonious Monk and Charlie Parker (including his participation in the legendary ’Round Midnight recording); his big album hit with Skylark in 1948; and his quick, inexplicable downfall and eventual disappearance from the jazz scene in the sixties.

De Felitta’s film, above all, is determined to restore Paris’s work to
public view. Based on the many delightful samples on the soundtrack, it’s an exemplary goal. Part detective film, part tribute, ’Tis Autumn: The Search for Jackie Paris chronicles one jazz aficionado’s obsession with understanding why the vocalist has been so overlooked and unheralded. De Felitta clearly makes a strong case for rediscovering this little-known artist. Even non-jazz fans will enjoy the filmmaker’s personal approach to uncovering the mystery surrounding Paris’s career.

“This entertaining and passionate documentary about the obscure
jazz singer Jackie Paris tells the tale of an extraordinary voice and
a self-destructive genius. It’s about being an artist, and living the
life of a jazz musician, but it’s also about being a fan.”

– John Anderson, Newsday

SAINT JOHN - CREATIVE JUICES FLOWING AGAIN BECAUSE OF SILVER WAVE

I want to thank the NB Film Co-op and Silver Wave Film Festival and all the people involved for a wonderful time at the festival. I was so glad to see cat, tony and other  people that I haven't seen for many years. It was so good to catch up with everyone. This weekend was very inspirational for me as I miss working on films so very much. This weekend has prompted me to want to get back into it. Although I'm thinking of getting back into it in another capacity.

I would absolutely love to concept/direct music videos and possibly even have one ready for the festival next year. For many years I've always wanted to be a music video director. I've tried to make that happen by talking to various musicians but nothing has ever come from it. Then before I knew it, real life took over and time flew by.

I'm wondering if there are any artists, groups, musicians who would be interested in giving an aspiring video director a chance to create/concept a video for them. I have a saying "I have many years of experience, but nothing to show for it". Meaning 90% of the time I hear a song I'm always creating a video for it in my mind, but its never gone further than my brain.

If there is anyone interested, I'd LOVE to meet with them. Feel free to give them my contact info.

506-847.9626-H
506-647.6684-C

Oh, and I'm still in love with stunt driving too so, if anyone's looking for that I'm in as I have done that before. Thank you so much for everything! If there's anything I can ever do for all of you great people at the Film Co-op, just let me know.

SILVER WAVE FILM FESTIVAL SWEEPS KATIMAVIK AWAY

By Hailey McWilliam

The eighth annual Silver Wave Film Festival kicked the past weekend off with a bang, showcasing a wide variety of films shot mostly in the beautiful province of New Brunswick. Films from other parts of the country were also a part of Silver Wave, offering the public a chance to view amateur and professional films from around Canada. The Festival was quite a success with more than just the viewers.

Fredericton’s Katimavik group had a firsthand, behind-the-scenes opportunity as part of the volunteer force behind Silver Wave. Armed with red shirts and eager attitudes, the eight participants took to the Wave like a fish takes to water. The creative atmosphere was enhanced by the attitudes of every viewer, every volunteer and of course, any of the crew directly involved with the films. Participants had multiple opportunities to rub shoulders with New Brunswick’s own stars, whether they be filmmakers, directors, actresses or actors.

Through their efforts as ticket takers, ticket sellers, gophers or even as ushers, the Katimavik group was given more than just free passes to the Festival; they were given the perfect chance to discover the talents of the locals and the scenery of New Brunswick in an atmosphere that thrived off of acceptance and creativity.

The talents of the locals spoke special volumes during the Festival’s Friday midnight showing of a collection of shorts titled “Bloody, Weird & Perverted.” Idealistic and truly strange, these shorts revealed the gore genre at its best, and some of the participants just had to laugh at their sheer boldness. Most shorts had the crowd of mostly UNB and STU students laughing, while others had the crowd either confused or feeling slightly queasy. Some were monumental in their overuse of ketchup, while others remained strictly bizarre with the use of blow-up dolls.

As the weekend drew to a close and the group ended their foray into the world of films, Fredericton’s Katimavik group was left reeling after their experience, if you’ll excuse the pun. Memories were made, and though none were captured on film, they will always be remembered.

Thanks, Silver Wave!

LOOKING FOR VINTAGE FILM FOOTAGE ON ROAD CONSTRUCTION

My name is Brad MacDonald and I'm currently studying filmmaking in Nova Scotia. I have begun to do research for a documentary I plan to produce and am in need of vintage (1900-1980) film footage of road construction. I am aware that film footage is quite scarce and still photo's from those era's are much more common but as of right now, I am looking for motion footage. I would appreciate any help whatsoever!!! Thank you very much,
