The 8th Annual Silver Wave Film Festival Announces Full Line-up of Films and Special Events
Thursday, October 23, 2008
Fredericton, NB— the 8th Annual Silver Wave Film Festival, November 13-16, 2008, announced today its line-up of films and special events for this year’s festival. Over
82 films from New Brunswick, across Canada, and around the world will grace Silver Wave screens this November.
“Not only do we have our annual festival to look forward to this year but as well, on the first day of our festival on November 13, New Brunswick Film is holding their annual Film Industry Summit with this year’s theme being The State of the Industry, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, so register soon”, says NB Filmmakers’ Co-op Executive Director Tony Merzetti by emailing NB Film at: nbfilm@gnb.ca
The Opening Gala film for the festival will be the feature film Growing Op, which was written and directed by Halifax based Michael Melski, and shot in NB. The screening of Growing Op will take place on Thursday, November 13, at 8pm at Tilley Hall, UNB campus, Fredericton, NB. Growing Op is a poignant and engaging comedy about a teenage boy coming of age in a suburban grow-operation, who finds that the real jungle isn’t in his living room, but in the twisted values of the ‘normal’ status quo. Growing Op sold out at the Atlantic and Vancouver Film Festivals.
The NB Filmmakers’ Co-operative will proudly premiere the Diplomatic Relations trilogy (Back In You Arms, The Butterfly Broach and Hide & Seek) produced through its Film and Television Certificate Programme, on Friday, November 14 at 7:30pm at Le Centre communautaire Sainte-Anne followed by the rip roaring Latino Fiesta at 9pm.
NB Shorts I and II will screen on Saturday, November 15 followed by the Silver Wave Awards at Le Centre communautaire Sainte-Anne and then the After Party at the James Joyce Pub at the Crowne Plaza in downtown Fredericton.
Other special films and screening programs featured at this year’s Festival over the four days include French, Aboriginal, migration stories, youth screening programs and free Sunday matinee documentary screenings including a very special documentary about community icons John and Gus Mazzuca.
Don’t miss the features: The Poet, Heaven On Earth, C´est pas moi, je le jure!, Under the Same Moon and Up the Yangtze and the always quirky and contagious midnight screening program aptly themed this year: Bloody, Weird and Perverted.
Closing the 8th Annual SWFF on Sunday, November 16, 7pm at Tilley Hall, UNB Fredericton campus will be the gala feature British film, Brideshead Revisited. Based on Evelyn Waugh's 1945 classic British novel, Brideshead Revisited is a poignant story of forbidden love and the loss of innocence set in England prior to the Second World War.
In addition to screenings and parties, the SWFF presents its annual Industry workshops with renowned industry professionals.
The 8th Annual Silver Wave Film Festival takes place November 13-16, 2008, in Fredericton, NB. Full Festival passes can be purchased beginning November 3rd through the NB Film Co-op, Rm 131, Charlotte Street Arts Centre, 732 Charlotte Street, Fredericton; tel. 506-455-1632 . FREDERICTON - CFMDC ReGeneration SCREENING & WORKSHOP
What better way to celebrate a big birthday than by throwing a party and ensuring some great gifts? To mark their 40th anniversary last year, the CFMDC (Canadian Filmmakers' Distribution Centre) commissioned seven artists to make works inspired by films that are significant to them as image-makers. Premieres meet archetypes from the avant-garde in this unique evening that pairs new films with their influential companion
pieces.
Screening - November 5th, Wed, 7pm
Workshop - November 6th, Thursday, 7pm
Distribution Workshop
JoinLarissa for an informal workshop about distribution. She will be
discussing distribution possibilities for short films; the benefits of
having your work in distribution; the difference between commercial and non-commercial distribution; and what you need to put your films into distribution.
Instructor's Bio
Larissa Fan is a Toronto-based filmmaker, writer, and arts administrator who recently completed a Master of Fine Arts in Film Production at York
University. Larissa has worked for the Images Festival and LIFT, and is
currently Educational Sales and Outreach Coordinator at the CFMDC.
Adam Garnet Jones's Secret Weapons is an intensely personal animated film essay whose formal qualities speak to Mike Hoolboom's seminal, award-winning Frank's Cock (1993). Izabella Pruska-Oldenhof fashions a visual duet comprised of a 16mm film, The Garden of Earthy Delights, and a self-portrait photogram motivated by the incomparable virtuosity of Stan Brakhage's Christ Mass Sex Dance (1991). Jerry Thevent's Shelley renders homage to Shelley Niro's work in its meditation on binding relationships between nature, Western ideals, and native life in Canada. Louise Bourque's use of home movies in Fissures (1999) triggers a promise from mother to son in Lise Beaudry's La Vie en pellicule. With a playful, destructive spirit, Chris Gehman's Rostrum Press: Materials Testing "responds to an isolated aspect of two films by Michael Snow: Breakfast (Table Top Dolly) (1972-76) and Presents (1980-81), with an additional/incidental nod to Snow's Wavelength (1967)" (Chris Gehman). Afghanimation by Allyson Mitchell celebrates Joyce Wieland's brawn and brash, and her enduring legacy. Crushed by Susan Justin is a miniature study of grief and tribute to Midi Onodera's The Basement Girl (2000). – Andréa Picard (Cinematheque Ontario)

FREDERICTON - MONDAY NIGHT FILM SERIES
WHEN DID YOU LAST SEE YOUR FATHER?
October 27, 8pm at Tilley Hall, UNB Campus
Director: Anand Tucker
Cast: Colin Firth, Jim Broadbent,
Juliet Stevenson, Gina McKee, Claire Skinner
Run Time: 92 minutes
Country: Ireland/United Kingdom
Year: 2007
Language: English
Distributor: Mongrel Media
Premiering as a Special Presentation at the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival®, When Did You Last See Your Father? moved audiences with its emotionally riveting story.
The story begins with Blake, (Colin Firth, Bridget Jones’s Diary, Where the Truth Lies), an introverted man attempting to make peace with his overbearing, egotistical father
When the latter is suddenly struck down by illness, Blake flashes back to the conservative England of the 1950s, when Blake was a sensitive eight-year-old who already had come to see his father, Arthur (Jim Broadbent, The Chronicles of Narnia, Hot Fuzz), as a tyrant. The past continues to unfold, revealing Arthur to be a self-centered man caring little for other’s perceptions of him and manipulating any circumstance to his own benefit.
Blake in turn suffers through awkwardly painful family events, never
knowing the approval of his father. Dominated by Arthur’s personality throughout his life, Blake gradually learns to compensate for his shortcomings. Upon the revelation that his father is terminally ill, the adult Blake is compelled to confront the difficult history that prevented any meaningful connection between the two.
Coincidentally, Blake comes to understand that in his own clumsy and offensive way, Arthur was doing his best to show his son he loved him. What sets Tucker’s story apart from the rest is the unflinching devastating realism that is portrayed as Arthur’s health deteriorates and Blake struggles to mend the wounds of the past.
“Anand Tucker has no need of bells and whistles, instead letting
Colin Firth, and especially Jim Broadbent, enthrall us with wonderfully
vivid performances.” – Stella Papamichael, BBC

FILM PIX - VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA
“People are very complicated and relationships are very hard to sustain because people have incredibly detailed needs.”
Woody Allen
Film Pix, Greater Saint John’s volunteer-driven film series and film scholarship program, launches its fifth season in association with presenting sponsor BMO Nesbitt Burns, screening Woody Allen’s latest cinematic exploration of the complexities of relationships in the fresh-to-market, 2008 Cannes-premiered film, VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA! Film Pix has it for an exclusive, one-time screening at 7 PM, Tuesday, Nov 04, at host venue Empire Studio 10 Cinemas!
The setting > The ancient Mediterranean city of Barcelona, Spain. An extended summer holiday. An art gallery. A visit to Oviedo.
The characters > Two women, invited by an unhappy distant relative, to live with her, for the summer, in Spain. A painter with no guile. An ex-wife with a penchant for emotional and physical violence. And, we’re just getting warmed up…
The result > Personal mayhem, in a comedic way, that only Woody Allen could deliver, as he explores the successes and failures of relationships through the psychology of the characters, rather than through the external devices of formulaic Hollywood love stories.

LOOKING FOR VINTAGE FILM FOOTAGE ON ROAD CONSTRUCTION
My name is Brad MacDonald and I'm currently studying filmmaking in Nova Scotia. I have begun to do research for a documentary I plan to produce and am in need of vintage (1900-1980) film footage of road construction. I am aware that film footage is quite scarce and still photo's from those era's are much more common but as of right now, I am looking for motion footage. I would appreciate any help whatsoever!!! Thank you very much,
Brad MacDonald, macdonald.inc@hotmail.com
