Spotlight!

INTERNATIONALLY RENOWNED NB ARTIST PASSES AWAY

Gordon Dunphy passed away on Thursday, September 25, 2008 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton.

Gordon Dunphy, internationally renowned New Brunswick wood-turner, was born into an old New Brunswick farm family on the Nashwaak River Valley. He spent the greater part of his life as a highly respected dairy farmer, specializing in animal husbandry. No one expected him to do anything else until the day in 1981 when he turned from farming to embrace his own art, imagination and poetry in his pursuit of wood turning.

He soon received invitations to show his work throughout Canada and Europe. Gordon Dunphy’s contribution to New Brunswick’s cultural landscape was marked by numerous awards. In 1988 and 1980 he received the New Brunswick Crafts Council Premier’s Prize; in 1995 the Kjeld and Erica Deichmann Award for Excellence in Craft; and in 2002 he received the prestigious Strathbutler Award for Excellence in Fine Craft and Visual Arts. Gordon Dunphy’s respect for his material allowed him to transcend his own craft. He neither regarded wood as a medium for his message nor as a vehicle for his virtuoso turning techniques. Rather, the wood was a
once living substance, a subject worthy of his collaboration. When describing his work, Gordon always stated that the “wood spoke to him” and his art, in turn spoke to many.

Gordon Dunphy’s work can be found in many private, corporate and public collections including that of the British Royal Family. We offer our sincere condolences to Gordon’s family.

ANIMATOR IN RESIDENCE LOVED THE NB FILM CO-OP AND THE MEMBERSHIP

My Dear NBFC friends,

So I made it back in one piece! My trip to Montreal was long but the road was beautiful. The trees were so bright in color and the bus was mostly empty, so it was a quiet trip. Since my return I have been busy busy busy. I have also been thinking about this farewell note to you for the past couple of days - and I think that you must know that my stay in Fredericton was something else for me. There is not a day that passed that I did not appreciate and enjoy. It was wonderful to meet you all, I had so much fun. You made me feel the most welcome too, and for this I send you my warmest thank you. I think the NBFC is so effervescent! So many people at work! It is truly inspiring and I have learned so much from it.

I feel so very lucky to have meet Cat and Tony, they are amongst the most devoted and hard working people I have ever met - and all of you, with the Co-op, in NB, have now become my truly favorite memory.

I can't wait to see you all again, I trust at the 2009 Silver Wave festival if not sooner,

thank you for this wonderful time,

yours truly,
Elise

MEETING MEMBERS

It is always great to meet a fellow Film Co-op member for the first time and that was the case when I met Fredericton based member Jeff Seymour. He was in to see Tony and Cat to drop off the screening copy of his film for Silver Wave recently. We met and he was telling me about his project entitled, Retrievable. Short synopsis of the film: Good intentions can be elaborate, but the most elaborate results come from ill intentions gone good. I hope to see Jeff around more and look forward to seeing his film at Silver Wave and his future projects in the works.

THE PASSION OF A MAN BEGINS PRINCIPLE PHOTOGRAPHY

Conrad Steeves is pulling out all the stops for his upcoming short film, "The Passion of a Man." The film begins shooting this weekend in Fredericton with the fall colours in full bloom

Cast and Crew:
Conrad Steeves - Director/Producer/Writer/Also playing 'Kevin', Jesse Anthony - Director of Photography
Joel Thompson - Assistant Camera/Grip
Keith Ruttan - Grip/Lighting, Terry Oakes - Sound
Chafic Haddad - Assistant Camera/Grip
Joe Blades - Art Department
Jeff Crawford - Stills Photography
Starr Holmden (Corena's mom) - Craft Services/Production Assistant
Corena Walby - Production Manager/1st Assistant Director and Continuity

Synopsis:  Kevin is a professional photographer and former womanizer who falls in love with a model name Lisa. He experiences emotional detachment after witnessing Lisa's mental breakdown and learning of her death. Kevin struggles for his sanity from the loss of Lisa and the emptiness of the city and seeks comfort in nature and in the sacred.

HOPEWELL CLOSE TO A WRAP

The rain this past weekend did it best to wash out the filming of Tim Rayne's "Hopewell", but the cast and crew battled the elements from their inside location to get a large majority of the principal shooting completed. Newcomer actor Faith MacFarland was outstanding in her role and Josh Linton and Jim Lavoie picked up where they left off in "Waiting For Myra". The other actors involved were excellent as well (Julien & Geraldine).

Can't say enough good things about Tim's script and the camera and lighting work of Tony Merzetti who was strongly supported by his crack team of assistant camera/grip men, Michel Guitard and Mike Cowie (also put in duty as the AD) and key grip Tim O'Neill who is always outstanding. Bruce LeGrow and Chris Giles worked their usual magic on sound, Jeff Crawford was excellent as the stills photographer with 'sharp as a tack' Jennifer Merserseau as Continuity, Arthur Thompson as production designer and locations and Nathalie Rayne as co-producer and production manager.

I rank the entire crew right up there with any I have ever worked with including commercial shoots.

The food was plentiful as Santa's Little Helper came through as usual. It was a great experience and a fun time even without my trailer.

FREDERICTON - MONDAY NIGHT FILM SERIES

The Stone Angel

October 6, 8pm at Tilley Hall, UNB Campus
Director: Kari Skogland
Cast: Ellen Burstyn, Christine Horne, Cole Hauser, Kevin Zegers, Ellen Page Run Time: 100 minutes
Country: Canada
Year: 2008
Language: English
Distributor: Alliance Films

Screen goddess Ellen Burstyn (Requiem for a Dream, The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood) gives a tour-de-force performance in The Stone Angel, which screened at the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival®. This remarkable film is the much-anticipated adaptation of Margaret Laurence’s landmark Canadian novel. The story leaps onto the screen with elegance and ease, beautifully fulfilling the emotional power of the original work.

As flinty and immovable as the Stone Angel itself, Hagar Shipley is
defined by the fierce pride she inherited from her father. Facing imminent death, and refusing to yield even to mortality, Hagar’s mind conflates past and present as she makes a final grasp for independence, finding instead an unexpected and humbling reconciliation.

Now living with her son Marvin (Dylan Baker, Happiness, Fido), elderly Hagar (Burstyn) is brought to a nursing home – to see what she thinks. Her response is easily predicted, and she later bolts from her son’s house, determined to find a seaside home she remembers from her youth. Throughout this journey, chapters in her life coalesce and we come to know the radiant young woman – scion of her father’s mercantile empire – who is disowned when she marries the rough, bold Bram Shipley (Cole Hauser, Dirty, The Break-Up).

Romantic illusions soon dissipate, and Hagar begins to think her husband is beneath her. Her disdain for him, exacerbated by discontent with her own unfulfilled ambitions, incites a hereditary flaw as she denies her children the parental approval she so desired from her father.

The cast boasts some of Canada’s best young actors; they beautifully enrich this character-driven piece.

“A tastefully reverent, fundamentally sincere treatment of Margaret
Laurence’s 1964 Manitoba-based novel....” – Eddie Cockrell, Variety
