MONCTON - NBFC MEMBER ANIMATION UPDATE

Short Films:
The week of September 25th to October 4th was the FICFA (Festival international de cinéma francophone en Acadie) here in Moncton and I attended two interesting events. The first was the "Soirée des p’tites vues" which was showing films from local filmmakers in association with "Le Coude" a newly formed group for amateur filmmakers that go out and shoot short films with a very fast turn around time. they showed experimental and very quirky films, but they also showcased films of some of the NB Film Co-op members which was very nice. They are also open to showing more in the future as we now have a pool of Moncton based NBFC filmmakers and they would be interested in showing what the local people are producing. Very good news indeed for local Moncton filmmakers for seeing and showing their productions locally!

The main contact for this organization is Sylvestre Dion (lecoude@ficfa.com ) and he is also a trained film editor and is willing to help anyone out. If anyone in Moncton is interested in getting to know more about showing their films through Le coude, feel free to contact Sylvestre.

Animation:
The second event that really excited me this year was the "Table-ronde : l’animation est-elle possible en Acadie? / Round table: Is animation possible in Acadia? Here I was very fortunate to meet some local animators and have a frank discussion about animation in NB and also talk to them about the NB Filmmakers' Co-operative. I learned that there is a French animation school which is similar to NBCC- Miramichi (which has an animation program). This would be for people who wish to study in French. It's through the NBCC- Shippagan:

CCNB Peninsule Acadienne
Paul Duguay
Enseignant en technologie de l'animation 2D-3D
paul.duguay@gnb.ca

(506)336-3228

Another interesting person I found out about is Michael Roy who started an animation studio in Moncton just a few months ago:

Studio FLIC Studios
Michael Roy
Animation Director
swiftroy@hotmail.com

(506)863-3303

In Fredericton there is the Centre for Arts and Technology which offers programs in 3D animation and gaming animation.
http://www.digitalartschool.com/fredericton/programs.html

Lastly, the most widely known and successful commercial animation studio in New Brunswick is Miramichi based Fat Cat Studios: http://www.fatkat.ca/

I hope this information will help anyone looking for animation information ( in French or English) in New Brunswick.

And of course the best resource to point anyone in the right direction is our lovely Cat Leblanc at the the NB Film Co-op. She is a fountain of knowledge and knows anyone and everyone who has any knowledge on anything to do with filmmaking. Or she knows how to find it.

Enjoy!

Donovan Richard, Moncton based NBFC member filmmaker

ACTOR/SINGER HOSTS MUSIC EVENT

Wally MacKinnon who acted in Bunthivy Nou's Short Film Venture drama, "A Lions Tale" (Official entry for SW 08), invites fellow cast and crew members and all NBFC members to an "evening of fun, beer drinking, toe tapin' music". It is "An Evening of Songs" featuring Wally and guest musician John McCarthy and takes place this Friday, October 10th at the MO-JO'S PUB at 426 Queen St. Fredericton. The fun starts at 9:00 p.m.

EVAN LEBLANC SIGNS ON WITH MUSIC AGENT

You read it here first! A couple of months ago I wrote about the future looking good for singer/songwriter Evan Leblanc after watching him perform at Doodles Café. Well, he is signed on with an agent, a recording deal is in the works, and he is the opening act tonight for "Age of Daze" at the Playhouse. Showtime is 7:30. If you like the Dallas Green style you should check out this gifted NB singer/songwriter.

DOODLES CAFE IS FULL OF MUSIC

Speaking of Doodles Café, cafe owner, Erin continues to bring in live music. The cafe boosts an intimate setting in which to enjoy performances. A very special show is coming up on Saturday, October 18th. It's the "Babes for Breasts" musical benefit tour at Doodles Café, 732 Charlotte St. Fredericton! There will be 5 Babes performing to raise funds for the fight against breast cancer. Last year, the tour raised $21,479.79 and their goal this year is $50,000. Check out www.babesforbreasts.com for all the details, Babe's websites, shows, tpur venues etc. The Doodles show features Jessica Rhaye, Jess Clemons, Amy Campbell, Amanda Rheaume and head babe Ana Miura. These are talented ladies lending their support and voices to fight the good fight. This tour, with a mixture of Babes along the way, is busy with 19 shows in October alone and is going coast to coast. Be part of the cure on Oct 18th at Doodles Café.

I mentioned last week about how quickly the 2008 Silver Wave Film Festival is coming up and since then on a daily basis my email and Cat's are filling up and our phones are ringing constantly with questions about SWFF. Everybody be patient as plans are being finalized for our annual SWFF Media Launch in just a few weeks time (TBA). At that point, as Cat has told me, the full SWFF program will be launched on the Silver Wave website and the print programme will have gone off to the printers and a pdf of it will be available online. We have a great festival in the works and more than a few surprises in store for everyboey (Kudos to Tony, Cat, festival leads, board and volunteers for all your hard work up to this point).

I hope everyone has a safe and great long weekend. Happy Turkey Day if that's your choice.

SILVER WAVE FILM FESTIVAL 2008
November 13-16, Fredericton

Blast from the Film Past Contest!

Guess who these three lovely film folk in the above picture are from Silver Wave 06 - Hint: one is past prez of the Film Co-op, one is someone who has been on the film scene for over 20 years and one is a SJ filmmaker. If you guess all of them correctly, you will win a full all inclusive pass to Silver Wave 08!

This contest is not open to the Film Co-op board of directors, SW festival leads, sponsors or filmmakers who will be receiving full passes to SW 08.

SWFF is the annual film and video festival presented by the New Brunswick Filmmakers' Co-operative. It has both curated and competitive streams, as well as a solid line-up of social activities and workshops that get the town buzzing.

This year, we are celebrating our 8th year with some new programming approaches and again we’ve waived the submission fee for filmmakers submitting so, it promises to be a good year. Save the dates and plan to attend!

Film and video projects that are accepted for screening into the SWFF and created by New Brunswick Filmmakers residing in the province and shorts from away will be considered for specific Silver Wave Awards.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - October 09, 2008

SAINT JOHN -  “MY ULTIMATE DREAM IS TO CREATE FILMS”

teenage producer/director announced as recipient of film pix scholarship

Saint John, NB – Kirsten Stanley, 2008 High Honours Graduate of Kennebecasis Valley High School, is the inaugural recipient of the Film Pix Scholarship for Aspiring Filmmakers, valued at $1,000 (cdn) per academic year. Stanley, currently in her first weeks of student life at NSCAD University, is pursuing an undergraduate degree in fine arts.

Describing her ultimate dream as one in which she creates films that entertain and impact the public, Stanley expressed her subtle view of life through the opening words of her scholarship application essay:

“A dog running across a field can be a simple memory from today’s afternoon, or an unbelievable camera shot of an injured dog that was believed never to walk again.”

Already an accomplished filmmaker, Stanley has produced, directed, written, and edited several films. Her productions include ‘Driving Angles’, a short documentary that weaves together the circumstances of four different drivers as they navigate traffic conditions; her high school’s video yearbook, for which she acted as producer and implemented a unique business model to maximize revenues for the project; and, a corporate video for a local construction company, for use as an in-house training tool. And, with broad ranging interests extending beyond filmmaking, Stanley has been a member of her high school’s Leadership Team; a participant in the Youth Apprenticeship Program; an adult fitness instructor at a local health club; a gold medalist rower; and a pianist with a Grade Three certificate.

Film Pix Founder and Operations Manager (volunteer), Kendra Black, is proud to see the growing film series and scholarship program associated with Stanley, saying, “Beyond being a young filmmaker with significant growth potential, Kirsten is a bilingual high honours student with a mind for problem solving that shifts effortlessly between subjects as diverse as calculus, theatre arts, and entrepreneurship. She is a great role model for others.”

Stanley has also made a lasting impression on her high school teachers, being described by one as “extraordinary”. Upon learning she was short listed for the scholarship, math teacher Marie Eve Theriault commented, “I can count on one hand the number of students who have made an impact like Kirsten. She is very polite, respectful and mature; a dream student.”

Presented by BMO Nesbitt Burns, and programmed with the assistance of the Film Circuit Division of the Toronto International Film Festival, Film Pix ( http://www.filmpix.ca ) is a volunteer-managed and administered, new-release, community film series, annually awarding a scholarship of significance to an emerging local film professional who is pursuing filmmaking as a career choice. Located in Saint John, New Brunswick and founded in early 2004, Film Pix initiated the first-ever film scholarship in the region, while declaring a mandate to generate awareness about non-traditional career alternatives for local youth, and to facilitate public access to world class, feature-length niche films.
