Spotlight!

NB Film Co-op KIDS Filmmaking Camp a success!

My name is Michel Guitard and I am a Film Co-op member, filmmaker and instructor. This summer I had the chance to teach the Film Co-op's Kids Filmmaking Camp . It was a 5 day long camp that taught the basics of filmmaking to kids between the ages of 10 and 15.

During the week we covered everything from coming up with an idea to writing the script, pre-production planning, shooting, editing and ultimately screening our project to a packed house of proud parents. This year the class made a short 3 minute long comedy about a lemonade turf war called "Citron?" , which will be screened at this year's Silver Wave Film Festival in a youth screening program.

Overall, the workshop went very well, the kids were excellent and I am proud of their final product. I look forward to teaching this camp again next summer!

WANT TO BUILD A SET? IT'S POSSIBLE WITH THE FILM CO-OP!

NB Joy Award Winning filmmaker Chris Giles' Birth of a Nicola was produced last weekend. There were only 4 locations: The lab, the netherworld, the mountains and a potato field. Except for the potato field in Florenceville, each set was built in the auditorium of the Charlotte Street Arts Centre (CSAC).

An enormous thank you goes out to the art director, Joe Blades, who spent a week making a 25 foot square lab out of Diplomatic Relations left over material, and to Theatre New Brunswick for generously letting us borrow set walls that weren't being used for their upcoming "Rocky Horror Picture Show". A big thanks also goes out to the Charlotte Street Art Center staff who let us occupy the space for that span.

As an actor, it is always a privilege to act on a set. I slipped in and out of 3 different characters effortlessly as each had their own unique set, costumes and props that I was able to perform with.

Chris Giles proved that no matter how elaborate the set structure calls for in the script, it can be done! Ask Cat and Tony about the material from Diplomatic relations and members should keep building a strong relationship with TNB. Dream it, build it and shoot it!

Thank you to the full crew, cast, NB Film Co-op, NB Film, Linda Joy Media Arts Society and all the other sponsors who made this grant possible through the NB Joy Award.

Dennis,
Nick/boss, and Chief Qzuiliv

FREDERICTON - MONDAY NIGHT FILM SERIES ROLLS OUT A NEW RED CARPET OF FILMS!

YOUNG AT HEART

September 15, 8pm at Tilley Hall, UNB Campus
Director: Stephen Waker
With: Young @ Heart Chorus
Run Time: 107 minutes
Country: United Kingdom
Year: 2008
Language: English
Distributor: Fox Searchlight

A hit among audiences and critics at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, and winner of an audience award at the 2008 Los Angeles Film Festival, Young @ Heart is a humorous and inspiring doc that challenges the stereotypes of old age in a world obsessed with eternal youth.

For over twenty-five years, the Young @ Heart Chorus has entertained audiences at home and abroad with unique renditions of punk, rock and rhythm and blues songs by musicians as varied as Radiohead, Jimi Hendrix and The Clash. Of course, the average age of most rock ‘n’ rollers isn’t eighty years young. As the group prepares for a new show hilariously titled “Alive and Well,” Young @ Heart’s taskmaster and choral director Bob Cilian has a new collection of songs for these lively elders to learn. Far from a novelty act, the group is as much about serious music and supportive community as it is a way to stay active and engaged in a society that often expects seniors to be passive and quiet.

Documenting the unique challenges faced by this impressive collection of senior citizens, Stephen Walker’s intimate and delightfully whimsical documentary demonstrates that the Young @ Heart Chorus only gets better with age. Funny, poignant and inspirational, the film offers the kind of wisdom that can only be cultivated with age, as the elderly protagonists cope with loss and forge on in an ever-changing society.

“A crowd-pleaser in the best sense, this alternately hilarious and heartbreaking movie will send you out of the theater with a new lease on life.” – David Ansen, Newsweek

FREDERICTON ARTS ALLIANCE CANDIDATES' FORUM ON THE ARTS

September 23 - 7pm - 9pm, Location: TBA

An Invitation to participate in the Fredericton Arts Alliance Candidates’ Forum on the Arts, 2008

The Fredericton Arts Alliance is a not-for profit arts advocacy and lobbying association founded in 1999 to present a collective voice for the development of all artistic disciplines. Part of the mandate of the Fredericton Arts Alliance is to mobilize the arts community to encourage artists, arts organizations, arts workers and friends of the arts to vote, and engage in meaningful political dialogue with the candidates.

The Fredericton Arts Alliance Candidates’ Forum on the Arts 2008 is an initiative of the Fredericton Arts Alliance designed to encourage individuals interested in the Arts to vote in the upcoming Federal election and to be informed on relevant election issues. The Fredericton Arts Alliance is inviting all four electoral candidates to participate in an arts and culture community forum to be held Sept 23rd, 2008 from 7pm-9pm. Location is to be announced. We are also currently circulating a petition concerning the Federal cuts to the Arts to be presented to candidates at the Forum. This forum is open to the general public. All are welcome.

If you are an artist, or arts organization, or supporter of the arts and would like to ask a question appropriate for all the candidates to answer, please submit your question in writing to frederictonartsalliance@yahoo.ca by Tuesday September 16th by noon. Unfortunately, questions received after the 16th cannot be accepted. There will be an approval process to ensure that questions fit within the scope of a Federal election, that there are not duplicates, and so forth. It is a requirement that you or your representative must be present at the Forum to ask your question directly to the candidates. Only three questions will be accepted. However, there will also be an opportunity to ask questions at the event itself.

This is a great opportunity to make your views known, and to hear what candidates have to offer.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Congratulations to all New Brunswick filmmakers at AFF (Atlantic Film Festival).

NOTE: “Growing Op” is the Atlantic Feature on Friday, Sept. 12, shot in Moncton with NB producer, Monique LeBlanc, CinImage Productions Inc., Moncton.

Growing Op

Categories: Atlantic Focus, Drama, Feature Films, Gala Films

Screening: 7:00 PM Fri, Sep 12, Oxford Theatre, 95 minutes.

Dramatist and director Michael Melski has burst upon the big screen with his first feature, the fast, furious and very funny comedy, Growing Op. If you can imagine Cheech and Chong rewriting Sidney Lumet’s classic on-the-run drama Running On Empty with a nod to the continuing cable TV series Weeds, you might catch the subversive and hilarious premise of Growing Op.

When a marijuana-growing hippie couple move to the suburbs, their 18-year-old son longs to abandon home schooling and join the rest of the teenage crowd - despite the potential danger for discovery of his parent’s occupation. Myriad plot twists and turns later, Growing Op retains its point of view as a zany critique of contemporary suburban mores. Driven by a razor-sharp wit, fabulous performances from Daniel MacIvor, Hugh Thompson and Bill Carr, Growing Op is a coming-of-age dramatic comedy with a difference.

- “Sacred Sundance” (NFB production) by Brian Francis, 68 minutes

o Categories: Documentary, Feature Films

o Screening: 12:00 PM Sat, Sep 13, Empire 8 Park Lane 8

o The Sundance is a sacred ceremony that is now being practiced by the Mi’kmaq of New Brunswick. It wasn’t always this way, however. Faced with a mounting epidemic of suicides and substance abuse, a group of elders sought advice from respected Sundance Chief William Nevin. His advice? Bring the Sundance to the East Coast. The Sundance of Big Cove, New Brunswick, would become the only one on the East Coast. There would be a price for this status, however, as the Mi’kmaq would be responsible for a four-year transition period at the end of which they would have to have their own prayers, songs, warriors and chiefs. They accepted this challenge and created a new tradition. Now every July, you can find these proud Mi’kmaq warriors dancing in the sweltering summer heat. Although the actual Sundance is a sacred ceremony that cannot be photographed, this complex and profound ritual does not have to be seen to feel its spiritual power in this amazing documentary.

- “Secrets of Autumn” by Pamela Gallant, 10 minutes

o Categories: Atlantic Focus, Drama, Short Films

o Screening: Sept. 15 @ 9:20 p.m., Empire 8 Park 8.

o Car troubles leave a travelling business woman stranded in a small town, where a local drama is unfolding around her. The events remind her of her own painful past but while she works through her regrets, she realizes things are not what they seem in this town.

- “A Lion’s Tale” (Short Film Venture Program) by Bunthivy Nou, 15 minutes

o Categories: Atlantic Focus, Drama, Short Films

o Screening: Sept. 15 @ 9:20 p.m., Empire 8 Park 8.

o A worn-out single mother desperately tries to protect her son from his abusive classmates. A topical drama about bullying, and the sacrifices parents make for their children.

- “His Good Will” by Cayman Grant 2008, 11 minutes

o Categories: Atlantic Focus, Drama, Short Films

o Screening: 7:10 PM Wed, Sep 17, Empire 8 Park Lane 4

o Amidst the racism, poverty and intense heat of 1950s southern United States, one young boy with nothing to offer still gives with all his heart. James Avery (Fresh Prince of Bel-Air) co-stars.

- “Lost Song” by Rodrigue Jean 2008, 105 minutes.

o Categories: Atlantic Focus, Drama, Feature Films

o Screening: 9:25 PM Wed, Sep 17, Empire 8 Park Lane 7

o New Brunswick filmmaker Rodrigue Jean’s latest feature, after his memorable debut Full Blast and astonishing follow-up Yellowknife, is a powerfully disturbing, tightly cast tale of a classically trained singer caught in a quietly repressive marriage. Shot almost entirely on location in Quebec in remote cottage country, the film follows Elizabeth (Suzie LeBlanc, in a brilliantly understated performance) as she raises her new son Michel while husband Pierre (the fiercely subdued Patrick Goyette) remote controls the domestic situation through his mother, parked in the cottage next door. A series of minor incidents - animals in the attic, a winsome neighbour - slowly build tension and suspense, until the film erupts in tragedy amidst the natural splendor of the North Woods. Jean’s spellbinding direction and the extraordinary acting make Lost Song a major step forward in Canadian cinema.

MONCTON - PAID CASTING CALL FOR MODELS

We are looking for 2 men and two women to model as two couples in our photographs. The age we are looking for is 30-40. Anyone who would look like they could be in that age bracket would be ideal as this is our target audience. We would like people that are in reasonably good shape, have nice features and are comfortable in front of the camera.

We will be shooting the photographs in front of the Capitol Theatre in Moncton, so local models from the greater Moncton area would be preferred . We have put in a request to the City of Moncton for a street closure on one of the following dates (September 21, 22, 28, 29). Depending on the weather the shoot will happen on one of those days.

Could you please ask any interested parties to forward a full body and a headshot to me by email? They do not need to be professional photos.

Thanks for all your help.
