Spotlight!

AS SCENE FROM HERE

AFF UPDATES

Congratulations to Michael Melski and his cast/crew of "Growing Op" which kicked off the Atlantic Film Festival with a smashing sellout opening night. Former Fredericton NB Film Co-op member Denis Theriault had a key role in the production.

Speaking of The Atlantic Film Festival,  NBFC Executive Director Tony Merzetti and Membership Services, Cat LeBlanc are off to Halifax  tomorrow for a few days, to see some shorts, meet with industry people, friends and funders and of course promote the NB Film Co-op, Silver Wave Film Festival and the NB Film Industry Summit coming up in November (Nov 13-16 2008).

NORM

NB Film Co-op actor member Lita Llewellyn is rightfully singing the praises of a film being shown this weekend at the AFF entitled Norm. Norm is the story of an elderly man with Down syndrome. He survived an era where people with disabilities were sent away and now faces a battle with Alzheimer's, a disease that afflicts the majority of elderly people with Down syndrome. His saving grace has been his sister Karen who sixteen years ago fulfilled a promise she made to Norm when they were kids; to rescue him from foster care and give him a loving home.

"This is about my uncle", said a proud Llewellyn. "His journey with the family taking care of him, being sent away, and his coming back to the family years later. This is a beautiful pictorial journal of 5 years, watching him get older, showcasing his life with those around him. I feel everyone will be just a little better off after getting to know Norm!"

Also, Lita tells me  that Snow Angels is out on video now. Mark this down as a must see! There is more to come about Lita so stay tuned!

SILVER WAVE NEWS

It is with great pleasure that I share some good news. Long time NB Film Co-op member and King trouble shooter (maker?) Colin Smart's "Temple of the Sapphire Moon" will be part of this year's Silver Wave Film Festival. Colin is the Director, Producer & Writer and lead a talented cast/crew on what some may call a parody of that Harrison Ford character Indiana what's-his-name. If the audience has half the fun this gang had making it that will be saying something. Go to http://www.myspace.com/totsm

THE WRITE STUFF

Traveling publish/poet  Joe Blades is at the Centre for Creative Arts in Grande Prairie Alberta: ( http://www.creativecentre.ca   or info@creativecentre.ca ) The Joe Blades Books By Hand Workshop will happen on September 23, 2008. As Joe wings his way westwards his reputation precedes him as spelled out in an article encore section of the Daily Herald Tribune in Grande Prairie.

"In addition to poetry readings from local talent, the event will feature a special guest, Joe Blades, an acclaimed poet from New Brunswick, will be making his first appearance in Grande Prairie."

It then goes on to describe Joe's guest spot at The Small Press Fair at the literary hub "Rabbit Hole" and how Joe does a thing where he sets up an old manual typewriter he has, on a desk at the entrance or by a window. Then he will spend some time composing poetry "on-the -fly" while people are coming by, while he is watching the streets". This takes place on Sunday Sept 21 at the Rabbit Hole Book Store as the League of Canadian Poets &Cygnets Writing Group presents "What's a Word Worth" where the East Coast meets the Prairie.

FREDERICTON - MONDAY NIGHT FILM SERIES ROLLS OUT A NEW RED CARPET OF FILMS!

FUGITIVE PIECES

September 22, 8pm at Tilley Hall, UNB Campus, Fredericton
Director: Jeremy Podeswa
Cast: Stephen Dillane, Rade Serbedzija, Rachelle Lafevre, Larissa Laskin
Run Time: 120 minutes
Country: Canada/Greece
Year: 2007
Language: English
Distributor: Maximum Films

Anne Michaels’s debut novel, Fugitive Pieces, which was critically acclaimed and published in numerous countries, heralded a gifted new voice in Canadian literature. Bold and evocative, sparse and poetic, the book relates a unique story about the Holocaust while meditating on universal themes of loss and hope.

This evocative, haunting story was selected as the Opening Night Gala at the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival®. The story pivots around Jakob (Stephen Dillane, The Hours, Klimt), who narrowly escapes the Nazis in Poland when he is saved by Athos (prolific Croatian actor Rade Serbedzija) and taken to Greece.
No more than a boy, Jakob (played as a child by Robbie Kay in a haunting and almost impossibly beautiful performance) has witnessed the brutal murder of his entire family and the effects of his trauma are only lessened by Athos’s patience, love and nurturing. A close bond develops between the two and they remain virtually inseparable throughout their time in Greece and eventual relocation to Canada.

It is Athos who gives Jakob his love of the written word, but he is never able to fully penetrate Jakob’s sadness. Over time, however, he embarks – almost accidentally – on a redemptive journey that testifies to the healing power of love. Podeswa expertly captures the specificities of time and place, transporting the audience into a distinct and spellbinding world. Jakob’s inner turmoil, in Podeswa’s sensitive hands, becomes a symbol for the losses, tragedies and struggles of an entire era.

“The strengths of Fugitive Pieces are its fluidity and subtlety. Emotional repression may be one of the most difficult conditions to portray honestly, and Dillane’s performance of Jakob is a study in the art of creating sympathy by not asking for it.”– Liam Lacey, The Globe and Mail

FREDERICTON - ARTIST OPENING

Gallery CONNEXION in partnership with the UNB Art Centre presents:

head-games
hoods, helmets & gasmasks
sophie jodoin / drawings & video
(video in collaboration with david jhave jonhnston)

September 19 to October 17, 2008

OPENING: September 19
Artist Talk 6pm, Opening Reception 7pm

Graciously hosted by the UNB Art Centre, Memorial Hall, 9 Bailey Drive, UNB Campus, Fredericton NB Gallery Connexion, in partnership with the UNB Art Centre, is pleased to present Head-Games; hoods, helmets & gasmasks, an exhibition of drawings and video by Montreal artist Sophie Jodoin, video in collaboration with David Jhave Johnston.

"Two years ago I started working on The War Series. This on-going body of work contains many thematically-entwined sub-series and comprises over 600+ drawings in conté, black gesso and collage on mylar. The examination of war, its victims, and dehumanization conforms to a consistent interest in my career: the human figure as psychological sign.

Head-Games is a sub-section of The War Series. It consists of 80 drawings and a video projection. Various headgears are shown – helmets, gasmasks, & hoods – with some hybridized into faces. The drawings portray individuals simultaneously as both perpetrators and victims: their gazes both reveal and conceal. The slow-motion video parallels the drawings by portraying children playing at war, revealing an underlying inherent human violence in innocence." – Sophie Jodoin, 2008

Sophie Jodoin studied Visual Arts at Concordia University in Montreal, graduating in 1988. She has had several solo exhibitions in Canada including Edward Day Gallery in Toronto (2004, 2005) and Newzones Gallery in Calgary (2005). She has participated in international art fairs and group shows across Quebec and Canada, in the United States and in Europe. Her works can be found in private and public collections both in North America and in Europe. She lives and works in Montreal.

Gallery Connexion is still searching for a new location to move into since the flooding of the gallery in May and the subsequent loss of space in the annex of the Justice Building. The UNB Art Centre has graciously agreed to host this exhibition. Gallery Connexion appreciates the support of the UNB Art Centre and all of us involved are thrilled to have this new body of work show in Fredericton.

MONCTON - PROFILE ON 2005 NB JOY AWARD WINNER RICHARD LEBLANC

CUBERS: Project Development History

In March 2003, I submitted a script for a short film to the Moc Docs contest. The script was entitled "Rubik's Cube". I had been inspired to write this mockumentary after my sister and I reminisced about the 80s and a particular memory she had about her Rubik's Cube. This had nothing to do with actually solving the puzzle, but more to do with how the Rubik's Cube had played a role in her life on one particular day.

"Rubik's Cube" ended up being short listed and I was asked to come in for an interview. I did a google search to find out who owned the rights to the puzzle and soon found Seven Towns in London, England. I contacted them immediately regarding using the Cube in a short low budget film. They replied almost immediately saying I could use the Cube in my film and that if I was interested, I should contact Dan Gosbee who was organizing the 2003 World Rubik's Cube Championship in Toronto… A championship? I immediately contacted Dan who was based in Toronto, met with him over coffee, and quickly realized that "Rubik's Cube", the short mockumentary film, should become, CUBERS, the Documentary.

I started doing research on the project immediately and contacted many of the people who would later become subjects in the film. Seven towns gave us their full cooperation and full access to the event.

In August 2003, with the help of friends and contacts who were interested in the project, and with no time to get actual funding in place, we shot 5 days of footage at the Championships. This footage would become the back-story to Cubers. Over the next year, we created the trailer for Cubers and started to shop around the idea in order to secure funding so we would be able to continue shooting at the 2005 World Rubik's Cube Championships to be held at Disney World, in Orlando, Florida.

We had contacted broadcasters from all over the world and many were interested in the project, but without the first broadcast license, it was impossible to get them to commit. CUBERS needed a home in order to become reality. CBC expressed interest in the project in early 2005 and finally, in July of 2005, The National CBC gave the nod and we received development funding. Shortly after, in September of 2005, I was awarded The Linda Joy New Brunswick Joy Award. I think it was this award, given by peers, that finally started the ball rolling as it really helped to convince the CBC that CUBERS was indeed a viable project.

And so production officially began. For the following 3 years, we followed our characters at Rubik's Cube Championships and in their home towns in Canada, USA, France, and Israel. We also went on the elusive search for Erno Rubik in Budapest, but he refused an interview. Luckily, we still managed to get some good footage of the original Rubik's Cube. The final shoot was a recreation shoot that was shot in Halifax using the Linda Joy New Brunswick Award. We re-created the 80s and destroyed the cube in numerous ways to show that for most people, the Rubik's Cube had been nothing but a source of frustration.

Add more than a year of editing, great music and graphics, and finally we have CUBERS. It took five and half years from the moment I had the idea for CUBERS, to the moment of completion. Was it a labour of love, or just insanity? I am not sure. But persistence, lots of persistence, was definitely the key in making the project a reality. (Cubers recently played at the Atlantic Film Festival)

MONCTON - PAID CASTING CALL FOR MODELS

We are looking for 2 men and two women to model as two couples in our photographs. The age we are looking for is 30-40. Anyone who would look like they could be in that age bracket would be ideal as this is our target audience. We would like people that are in reasonably good shape, have nice features and are comfortable in front of the camera.

We will be shooting the photographs in front of the Capitol Theatre in Moncton, so local models from the greater Moncton area would be preferred . We have put in a request to the City of Moncton for a street closure on one of the following dates (September 21, 22, 28, 29). Depending on the weather the shoot will happen on one of those days.

Could you please ask any interested parties to forward a full body and a headshot to me by email? They do not need to be professional photos.

Thanks for all your help.
