NB Film Co-op

Past NB Joy Award Winner Rachel Bower's tiny editorial assistant Twinkle Toes is working hard below in the picture. She is a hard worker, very picky. Inexpensive though - only requires carrots and celery for her valuable input! Look for Rachel Bower at this year's Silver Wave!

Spotlight!

MONCTON - DO-GOODERS WRAPS SHOOTING

IT'S A WRAP! My fifth production's last shots were filmed on Sept 14th in Dieppe. Do-Gooders, led by our heroes Gordy (Jason Chisholm), Nikki (Tracey Carney) and Brad (Josh Linton) are tired of hosting a less than accurate sex education pod cast show. They decide they want to make a difference. Change the world one good deed at a time. However, their less than average intelligence and even more questionable social skills are their biggest obstacles. Their heart and determination get them much more than they bargain for.

Do-Gooders started with an idea, a script. The true results come from the heart that the cast and crew gave to the project. "Do-Gooders" is proof that when cast and crew believe in a project and do it for the love of it, then great things happen. The 15 minute film is a tangled knot between my previous productions but yet the idea is fresh and in many ways unlike anything I've done before.

The story came to me as I sat in my favorite chair… or drove in my truck, I suddenly can't remember… but I was determined to get Jason Chisholm into another of my films before he left for his three year stay in Paris France. My approach that seems to work, is writing with actors in mind. Luckily, it wasn't difficult to convince our funny trio to participate when they saw the opportunity to be outrageously silly on camera.

I'm a HUGE fan of Jason, and Tracey, and of Josh's rapist wit. I felt compelled to put them in a film together but this time, as friends. The chemistry was felt immediately as we shot our first scene on my front lawn and it carried through until the last scene on my back deck.

Also appearing in Do-Gooders are the talented Bunthivy Nou and Ralph Pritchard as well as new comers to the big screen Danielle Anderson-Poirier, Mark Beaman, Alisa Arsenault, Jason K Roy, Pauline Cormier, Corena Gillcash-Walby, and others. Do-Gooders was shot in HD in Dieppe, Cap Pele, Shediac, and Riverview NB.

FREDERICTON - SHORT FILM VENTURE SHORT FILM WRAPS SHOOTING

Timeline Pictures (Joel Thompson, Jesse Anthony and Gary Beatty) recently wrapped shooting on "UGLY" a 35mm Short Film produced with the assistance of the NB Film - Short Film Venture Program and the NB Film Co-op. It was the first time shooting on 35mm for Director Joel Thompson and it was a learning experience for all involved.

Director of Photography Jesse Anthony was elated at the chance to work with this format and did a bang up job for his first time. With only 10 rolls of film at 400 feet a roll the crew managed to complete shooting with 2 rolls to spare although initially the speed at which 35mm rolls through a camera scared the pants off Thompson.

The Cast of Tim Turnell, Elizabeth Goodyear, Gary Belding and Corena Walby were all superb. Tim Turnell played Michael to a tee, a blind man who suddenly gets his sight back, while Elizabeth Goodyear was perfect playing Joanne, Michael's wife, a self- conscious introvert who suddenly has to come to terms with her own hatred of what people see when they look at her. The cast and crew had long days and never showed signs of fatigue, partially because they are film robots sent from the planet Filmopia and partially because the location in which they were shooting was a cottage on a lake. On breaks the cast and crew would go for swims, have barbecues and camp fires at night making the whole experience a mix of filmmaking and vacationing. The location also lent well to the contrast of beauty with ugly. All in all it was a great experience!

The film is due to be completed within the next few months and then it's off to the festivals.

The filmmakers wish to thank: NB Film, NB Film Co-op, Edwina's Catering, Atlantic Film Co op, ACTRA, Dr. Alison, The Happy Baker, and all the cast and crew for working their butt's off and doing it with a smile!

ANIMATOR ELISE SIMARD

I had the pleasure of attending the animation workshop with Cat and others, instructed by The Film
Co-op's animator in residence, Elise Simard.

The workshop was one of her last tasks before departing back to Montreal today.

It was informative and interesting to learn some of the many techniques used in the formation of an animated film. What was also great fun was that each of the people in the class were able to make their own animation. All of the works were then combined to create a video, "fun".

I know I speak for Cat, Tony and Mike and all who have met her, that Elise has been a great addition to the NB Film Co-op and a wonderful artist to have in residence. While here, she has worked on a member shoot, Harvest Jazz and Blues, helped Cat and Tony out at the Monday Night Film Series and made a real point of helping Cat and Tony out in the office, cleaning up among other things.

She will be missed and everybody wishes her well as she heads home. Thanks Elise and please move to New Brunswick, we want you back!

A LION'S TALE TRAVELS

Out on the film circuit now is, "A Lions Tale", Bunthivy Nou's, Short Film Venture film. It roared at the PEI Film Festival to critical acclaim. Sarah Ketecheson's film debut in the principle role is being praised and indeed all of Bun's cast and crew were stellar. POST AFF NOTES

Speaking about film festivals Cat tells me that the AFF was a fun time. Her and Tony received many queries about the Silver Wave Film Festival 2008 (November 13-16) and The NB Film Industry Summit (November 13).

It is great to know that interest is high everywhere as people make their plans to attend this year's festivities in Fredericton. You can feel the excitement building at the Film Co-op as September draws to a close. I guess the countdown is underway- less than 7 weeks to go!

SFV FILM HOPEWELL SHOOTS THIS WEEKEND

The cast and crew of "Hopewell", directed, written and produced by Tim Rayne (short film venture recipient), will begin principle filming this weekend in various locations in and outside Fredericton. On board as well are Tim's partner in crime Nathalie Rayne as production manager and assistant director, Mike Cowie and Michel Guitard as camera assistants/grips, Bruce LeGrow and Chris Giles on sound, Tim O'Neill as key grip, Arthur Thomson as production designer and Jeff Crawford as stills photographer round out the rest of the crew with Cat LeBlanc as Santa's Little Helper onboard to lend a hand and eat all the craft services.

FREDERICTON - MONDAY NIGHT FILM SERIES

MISS PETTIGREW LIVES FOR A DAY

September 29, 8pm at Tilley Hall, UNB Campus

Director: Bharat Nalluri
Cast: Frances McDormand, Amy Adams, Ciarán Hinds, Shirley Henderson, Lee Pace
Run Time: 92 minutes
Country: UK
Year: 2007
Language: English
Distributor: Focus Features

In 1939 London, Miss Guinevere Pettigrew (played by Ms. McDormand) is a middle-aged governess who finds herself once again unfairly dismissed from her job. Without so much as severance pay, Miss Pettigrew realizes that she must for the first time in two decades seize the day. This she does, by intercepting an employment assignment outside of her comfort level as social secretary.

Arriving at a penthouse apartment for the interview, Miss Pettigrew is catapulted into the glamorous world and dizzying social whirl of an American actress and singer, Delysia Lafosse (Ms. Adams). Within minutes, Miss Pettigrew finds herself swept into a heady high-society milieu and, within hours, living it up. Taking the social secretary designation to heart, she tries to help her new friend Delysia navigate a love life and career, both of which are complicated by the three men in Delysias orbit; devoted pianist Michael (Mr. Pace), intimidating nightclub owner Nick (Mr. Strong), and impressionable junior impresario Phil (Mr. Payne).

Miss Pettigrew herself is blushingly drawn to the gallant Joe (Mr. Hinds), a successful designer who is tenuously engaged to haughty fashion maven Edythe (Ms. Henderson) the one person who senses that the new social secretary may be out of her element, and schemes to undermine her.

Over the next 24 hours, Guinevere and Delysia will empower each other to discover their romantic destinies.

FREDERICTON - CANADIAN CINEMA: SEEKING OUR IDENTITY THROUGH FILM

UNB's No Limits program presents "Canadian Cinema: Seeking our Identity through Film", instructed by NB Film Co-op member Michelle Lovegrove Thomson.

There is a common joke among film critics that Canadian films are made up of three things: weird sex, vast landscapes, and loners. What makes a film Canadian? Are there particular themes or characters that recur? Is there value in watching home-grown films?

In this five-week course we will screen a number of Canadian and Quebecois films to break down generalizations and explore what lies at the heart of our National cinema.
Course runs for five evenings Wednesdays 6:30 - 9:00 p.m. from Oct. 1 to 29 at Marshall D'Avray Hall, UNB, Room 356.
Course Number: CCOM 9500 Course fee: $120.00 + HST

I am a member of Trinity Square Video and Charles Street Video here in Toronto and as you will see in the posting below, I am seeking to create a short satirical video entitled, Why I Am Voting for Stephen Harper. And, with the help of artists and amateur filmmakers from across Canada, my plan is to put this together and to circulate it widely before the election.

If you would like to support this effort, please send it to your member list and post it widely. Do not hesitate to contact me by email if you have any questions.

HELP US CREATE A SATIRICAL VIDEO ABOUT STEPHEN HARPER

Attention Filmmakers, Actors, Writers and Any One Else Who Thinks the Harper Government Has Gots to Go – Icarus Fell Productions, a private non-partisan, production company, is seeking short video submissions for a funny, viral video titled, Why I Am Voting for Stephen Harper . We are looking for entries from across the country that can help us to create a video that will look something like this:

www.imvotingrepublican.com

The best entries will be edited together to create a finished piece that will be circulated as widely as possible prior to the election.

In order to participate we need you to do the following:

1) Watch the Why I’m Voting Republican Video, see link above.
2) Craft a segment of your own (maximum 10 seconds) where actors address the camera. The segment can address any campaign issue that you think is appropriate - from the Harper government's policies on the environment, the economy, and arts funding, to the definition of what constitutes marriage. Feel free to use your imagination. However, the segment should start with the following line in either English or French, “I’m/We’re voting for Stephen Harper because…
3) Shoot or animate the segment in whatever format you can – NTSC 30p is preferable, however, all submissions in all video formats will be considered equally. The important thing, is getting this video made.
4) Create an account at www.vimeo.com , upload your finished video by October 5, 2008 and send the link to this video to:
leah@leahcameron.com
. Please include your name and contact info in this email!
5) We will then download the best entries, edit them together and distribute the finished product in time for the election
Due to the speed at which we are putting this together, please note that we will not be able to contact all entrants to let them know whether or not their entry has been selected. We will, however, be forwarding the finished video to all participants.

Remember, as citizens, a sense of humour is our greatest weapon. We thank you in advance for your participation. Have fun and good luck!
