FROM CROSSROADS TO HIGHWAY
By Saint John Co-op member Neerja Kalra
Hooked up with my passion
Or was it a virus inside me
Helpless but anchored to it
Helpless but never hopeless
I raised my child
Against all odds
I invested the cream from my efforts
Keeping the residue for myself
“My Film Making- My Passion”
I am grateful
I kept it alive
Today at the helms of temple
I’ll find my God
“NB Film Co-op”
My Guru My Guide
Holds more respect
Than God
Because it tells me the way to God!!
Thanks to the NB Film Co-op
"Ever since I landed in Canada everybody has asked me if it was a big change, something new in life, but there was nothing that would really make me feel better in Canada than in India." I said. “It is good but nothing new in my life. But today I have to say it's the NB Film Co-op."
I could find everything else in India but never ever was there a Film Co-op like this. Thanks to that Almighty Divine for giving me opportunity to take this first step towards my filmmaking dreams. (written - 6pm-Sept 15, 2007 while coming back from the first Film Co-op workshop).

SHORT FILM WINS BIG AT ATLANTIC FILM FESTIVAL
La Voisine (The Neighbour) recently won Best Atlantic Short at the Atlantic Film Festival. This 23 minute drama relates the story of A family caught in a destructive routine where no one listens to anyone else. They see their lives upset by the arrival of a new neighbour. In the most peaceful of settings, on a quiet country road that leads to the ocean, tensions erupt. (Right: still from film)
La Voisine, written, directed and edited by NB Film Co-op member Pamela Gallant was produced by Phare-Est Productions through an iniative put forth by Patrimoine Canada. Funding partners included Telefilm Canada, Radio-Canada, L'Office National du Canada and Film NB. Main cast members included Montreal actress Ingrid Falaise in the role of the neighbour, Suzanne Lapointe in the feature role of rebel teenager Danika, Conrad Doiron, Dji Haché and Robert Gauvin. Many atlantic talents added their creative and technical know-how to the making of this film and the filmmaker is eternally grateful to all who participated!

NB SCREENWRITER MAKES HIS MARK
NB Film Co-op member Tony Sekulich's feature film screenplay Sharkjumping made the cut as a "Second-Rounder" at the 2007 Austin Film Festival Screenplay Competition. Second-round status means the screenplay placed within the top 10% of the more than 4,000 submissions received.
Sharkjumping is comedy about a man who comes to discover he is actually a fictional character in a TV sitcom. He meets an underground group of liberated self-aware fictional charaters who teach him how to get his life to "jump the shark". If he can turn his life upside down before the show gets sold into syndication, he will gain his ultimate freedom. If he cannot, it will mean a fate worse than death.
Tony has been invited to attend the Austin Film Festival's Scriptwring Conference to partake in special panels and workshops for Second Rounders, Semi-Finalists and Finalists.

R.E.S.P.E.C.T. Spells CREATIVITY & Transition House is the Beneficiary - “A NIGHT OF CABARET”
By: Jim Lavoie
An evening of Song, Dance, Merriment (Cabaret Style), a Fredericton first, awaits you at Boom! Nightclub (www.boomnightclub.ca) on Friday September 28. Showtime is at 8.30 p.m. and for $10 for advance tickets and $12 at the door, you get two full acts & special guests, with all proceeds going to Transition House.
“The club will be magically transformed into a sultry, dazzling lounge upon whose stage you will find talented locals unveiling cabaret at its best. It’s a live performance of the “old cabaret classics “ intertwined with new favorites", enthused Jessica Holt, co organizer. "This will be hot, hot, a first for Fredericton and is the happy result of momentum created by a network of supporters and friends. Special mention to Boom! nightclub and Tony’s Music Box.”
“Putting the show together has been a long process", said Holt. "All the steps involved have been agreed upon by the core cast. We have certified instructors who set up the dance routines and we all had input into music selection. Some had experience in wardrobe or clothes designs. Collectively as a team major decisions were hashed out. Once the logistics were in place for the set, lighting and sound established it was time to rehearse. We have been rehearsing for 4 months, two nights a week and all our work has prepared us well. We have set the bar high but its one we will meet to help out Transition House.”
Transition House (transhouse@nb.aibn.com ) is a safe refuge for any woman (with or without children) who has/is being abused in any manner. Open since 1980, Transition House offers a wide range of assistance/services to women. As with many non-profit organizations they are constantly shifting amidst budgetary cutbacks to meet their objectives/goals.
"Any financial assistance is much needed and greatly appreciated" said Tammy Kitchen, Executive Director of Transition House. “But, its extra special when members of the public hold their own fundraiser to help us. I wish to thank the cast and crew of “A Night of Cabaret” and all the best on September 28th."
The idea of holding a cabaret event was the result of co-organizer Whitney Illsley's enjoyment of singing and dancing. “I love to sing and dance and obviously many others do also", said Illsley. "I had what I thought was an absurd idea and that was to see how many others would want to hook up to do a live show. A cabaret!”
“Facebook was a point of contact and the response was awesome. That’s how I met Jessica and between us we took it to a new level. We held auditions, screened in/out, and finally our core cast and crew were set. We have a limited the number of tickets ( max 60) and we are almost sold out. We are very pleased with sales and expect a full house." At this point Holt interjected to say, "You know Cabaret has been in vogue throughout time and we are not trying to reinvent the wheel but we are just pumping it up 2007 style. We are a fun loving group and we wanted to add a little sizzle doing it up our way. This is definitely not anybody's grandparent’s cabaret!”
Both organizers felt that although there are many worthwhile charities/ causes they felt a special affinity to Transition House.

(A woman is a woman and so am I)
Sylvie Laliberté
8 min.11 sec., Canada, 2006
Here is a domestic woman who knows how to receive and who holds very decorative and oh so feminine views. Through a particular attention, image and sound are one; that is to say they go at the same speed; at the speed of a woman who wants to know, in all simplicity and in a practical sense. Or when being a woman is almost child's play.

Set in a kitchen, a strange scenario develops between two characters, rain boots, and an electric toaster. The amplified audio tension of the objects determine the spatial impression and the "toast" measures the duration of this meeting.

A salty submersion in the Northumberland Strait where masses of red-hued suns radiate.
Motel to Motel
Ryan Stec et Véronique Couillard
6 min. 27 sec., Canada, 2006
Motel to Motel is an experimental travelogue back dropped against the slowly eroding nostalgic atmosphere of the roadside motel. The work blends experimental and documentary approaches with photographic and cinematic influences as it follows a couple through cool and playful snapshots of green shag carpets, bedspread evening wear, sexual games, migrant Cape Breton workers and drug induced shivers.
Flatter
(Petting)
Productions Mange de la Colle
4 min. 23 sec., Canada, 2007
What tenderness could have been known without a teddy bear; what tenderness could have been known without this first love for a favourite animal stuffed with cotton and Styrofoam? Personified by stuffed animals, the characters transport us to a state of pure friendship.

Eugénie Cliche
4 min. 27 sec., Canada, 2005
A succession of mini-scenes where an old-fashioned ambiance and an illusory present are superimposed; where irony is revealed by the candid image, where pathos is inspired by simulated dream, where nostalgia is treated as a sure constancy…
(based on a text by Gérald Leblanc)
Chris LeBlanc
8 min. 27 sec., Canada, 2006
A lively film about a regretted poet, Mouvance guides us through the streets of the mythical city of Moncton often featured in the work of Gérald Leblanc. A visual poem in homage to an innovator who remained faithful to change, as only true poets can do.

FREDERICTON POET TO COMMIT ‘RANDOM ACTS OF
POETRY’
Random Acts of Poetry, a celebration of poetry and literacy, begins its fourth year during the week of October 1st to 7th, 2007. Random Acts of Poetry is a project of the Victoria READ Society, a non-profit literacy organization, established in 1976. Random Acts of Poetry is funded by The Canada Council for the Arts.
During the week, 37 poets across Canada, from Victoria to Newfoundland, including three of Canada’s Poet Laureates, will commit Random Acts of Poetry in their cities. On buses and subways, in donut shops and cafes, police stations, grocery stores, curling rinks, on city streets and country lanes, poets will read poems to strangers and give them their books. Poets will also read their poems in ESL and Adult Literacy classes across the country.
In Fredericton and Oromocto, just one poet will offer poems to passersby: Joe Blades—artist/writer/ known-world Viking and NB Film Co-op member. Blades has published four books of poetry and is also a member of the BlackTop Motorcycle Gang writers group.
“Poetry,” says Wendy Morton, “is the shortest distance between two hearts. I have read poems to people who hadn’t heard a poem in thirty years, and watched their eyes fill up with tears. Some burst into laughter or laid a hand on my shoulder, hugged me, took my hand. Poetry can connect us with each other as humans as no other art form I know. Poetry is a gift that we can create from whatever life has in store for us.”
Across Canada poets will commit random acts in: Victoria, Vancouver, Nanaimo, Kelowna, Calgary, Edmonton, Moose Jaw, Winnipeg, Stratford, Markdale, Brantford, Toronto, Ottawa, Windsor, Hamilton, Montreal, Fredericton, Oromocto, Charlottetown, Halifax, Antigonish, and St. John’s.

SAINT JOHN - FILM CO-OP MEMBER'S FILM DEBUTS
Filmmaker Greg Hemming's latest production "Wrestling Reality" debuted this Tuesday, September 25th at 9pm at Lancaster Doolys.
Toronto, Canada – September 20th, 2007 - The Fight Network – the world’s first “all fights-all the time!” combatant sports and entertainment is pleased to announce the release of the television series that is going to change the wrestling business forever…”Wrestling Reality”.
Produced by Hemmings House Pictures in Saint John New Brunswick, in partnership with New Brunswick Film, Wrestling Reality benchmarks a new era in professional wrestling, and independent Canadian television production. Executive producer / director Greg Hemmings is excited for the future of the show.
“The success of our first season’s tour throughout Atlantic Canada has already opened the doors to a possible 2nd season to be shot in Europe. The drama combined with action and high impact wrestling will attract not only fans, but also people who have little or no interest in the sport.”
Co-producer / wrestler Peter Smith says “This series will show sides of professional wrestling never before seen by the public.” Smith (Brody Steele) who is a long time and well travelled pro wrestler got together with wrestler Rick Doyle (Trash Canyon) and came up with the concept for the show. Smith adds “We are not generally people who fit the norm and the way we are seen by the rest of the world and how we react can be quite interesting. We all share a love for the wrestling business and although we are so varied in levels of success in our profession, this love bonds us into a very tight group. This passion for our profession will be evident throughout this series. This is certainly the most exciting project in which I’ve ever been involved.”
The 6 half hour documentary series airs weekly starting in November (The Fight Network has changed the airing date from Sept 25th to November). The public are still invited to join the producers to watch the first episode at Dooly’s locations around the Maritimes including the Lancaster location in Saint John, Dooly’s in Sussex, both Dooly’s locations in Moncton, New Minus Nova Scotia and Halifax. Producers and wrestlers will be at all locations.

FOR DOCUMENTARY FILMMAKERS
Ottawa - The Cultural Human Resources Council (CHRC) is proud to announce the release of a unique online learning module on Research Skills for Documentary Filmmakers. Click here
In association with the Council of Ontario Universities and funded by the Government of Canada's Sector Council Program, this interactive course was developed in close consultation with an Advisory Committee of emerging Documentary Filmmakers. It builds on the conceptual framework of the CHRC's Competency Profile for Documentary Filmmakers
to further clarify the roles research skills and document use play in the field of documentary filmmaking.
This learning module is designed to provide Documentary Filmmakers with a set of resources and techniques to prepare for and carry out background research. A series of educational activities pose challenges in conducting research as part of the filmmaking process. These include: defining the scope of research, determining appropriate resources (Internet, archives, periodicals, film/television, etc.), and working within limited financial and time constraints. Content for the module, compromising 2 to 3 hours of engagement, includes information about various facets of carrying out research for documentary films (incorporating, where relevant, audio/visual material); short self-assessment exercises; and interactive "case stories" inviting users to assess and respond to problems that may arise during the research process.
The online module is available on CHRC's: website
