Spotlight!
NB FILM CO-OP ANIMATOR IN RESIDENCE ELISE SIMARD
Dear NBFC members,
I am now a little more than half way through my artist in residence and things are very good. Tuesday, I sent a package to the lab and sometimes next week I should be able to watch the results of my animation experiments!! This is always an exciting moment. I am very happy with the course of this first shoot. I concentrated on composing landscapes, hinting mainly at dark forests and wetlands... and we will soon see how it all moves and sways. My story is shaping each day, and this has been, and still is, a wonderful journey. I hope to have a chance to share with you the bits and the pieces that are to make my film, as I am to end stay with the Film Co-op on the 25th of this month... But till then, work work work!!!!
I also hope you can join me on the 23rd of September at the Film Co-op for a night of animation! The workshop will go from 7 to 11pm and should be divided as such:
SCHEDULE:
7 to 8pm: presentation of my work and mini animation crash course.
7 to 11pm: creation of our own collaborative clay animation film! Depending on the number of participants we will work in little groups or as a big one. (We will also drink coffee and juice and eat chips, cupcakes and other munchies compliments of the Film Co-op!)
Please confirm with Cat that you will be attending as she can only take so many people (number limit is 10). This workshop is FREE and open to Film Co-op members!
So, till then I hope to see you around, my best salutations to all,
Elise

HOLD THE PRESS! - NEW FREDERICTON MEMBER MANDY MACLEAN
Mandy E. MacLean is finally a member of the NB Film Co- op!
Mandy was born in Germany and spent her early years collecting daises while wearing a leaderhosen and "skipping stones on the Rhine" with her father at age one and a half years old. Mandy discovered acting when her grade 7th teacher decided cutting paper in 371 pieces was not an appropriate pastime for a six year old. She also credits acting to her mother, who conveniently kept a costume box.
Her recent film credits include:
The Wedding (Center for Arts and Technology), Diplomatic Relations (NB Film Co-op) and various Film Co-op test runs. On stage Mandy has recently appeared as Helena (A Midsummer Nights Dream), King Lear (Theatre St. Thomas's- Bending the Bard), Mary (Theatre UNB's Unity 1918) and a very loud vagina in the Fredericton Playhouse production of the Vagina Monologues.
Last year she also directed Ben Elton's "Popcorn", and work-shopped George Elliot Clarke's newest libretto "Trudeau: Long March Shining Path" at the UNB. Currently Mandy attends the University of New Brunswick where she takes private voice and studies English and Theatre.

FREDERICTON - MONDAY NIGHT FILM SERIES ROLLS OUT A NEW RED CARPET OF FILMS!
THE VISITOR
September 8
,
8pm
at
Tilley Hall, UNB Campus
,
Fredericton
Director: Thomas McCarthy
Cast: Richard Jenkins, Haaz Sleiman, Danai Jekesai Guirira, Hiam Abbass
Run Time: 103 minutes
Country: USA
Year: 2008
Language: English
Distributor: Alliance Films
The Visitor, a Special Presentation at the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival®, is the pitch-perfect sophomore feature from Thomas McCarthy, whose beloved debut, The Station Agent (2003), is a Film Circuit favourite.
Here he returns with a beautifully poised and flawlessly acted paean to humanist hope in our ever-darkening age. Walter Vale (Richard Jenkins, I Heart Huckabees, The Kingdom) is a lonely widower, withdrawn from life and barely contributing professionally to the suburban Connecticut university where he is a professor. When he reluctantly goes into New York City for a conference, he finds an undocumented couple living in his long-vacant Manhattan pied-à-terre.
He ends up befriending them, especially Tarek (Haaz Sleiman), a Syrian street musician. But Tarek is profiled by the police at a subway station and incarcerated, becoming subject to imminent deportation. When Tarek’s widowed mother, Mouna (Hiam Abbass), appears, Walter’s connection to this family in distress deepens and his narrowed horizons expand.
“The story of [Walter’s] revitalization and his grief is compelling but simple, free of any sentimentality and marked by powerful performances from [Richard] Jenkins and Hiam Abbass….” – Philip Marchand, The Toronto Star

'IN A WORLD' VOICEOVER MASTER DIES AT 68
CNN.COM/entertainment
Don LaFontaine, the voiceover king whose "In a world ..." phrase on movie trailers was much copied -- and much parodied -- has died, according to media reports. He was 68.
Don LaFontaine was featured as "that voiceover guy" on a recent Geico commercial.
LaFontaine died Monday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California, according to ETOnline, "Entertainment Tonight's" Web site. He died from complications from pneumothorax, a collapsed lung that causes air to build in the pleural cavity, his agent, Vanessa Gilbert, told "ET."
LaFontaine, who was born in Duluth, Minnesota, began as a voice actor in the mid-1960s while working as a recording engineer, according to his Web site. His strong, slightly gravelly voice was featured on trailers for thousands of films, including "The Godfather," "Fatal Attraction" and "Terminator 2: Judgment Day." For a time in the late '70s, LaFontaine was the official voice of Paramount Pictures.
His favorite work was one he did for the 1980 film "The Elephant Man," he said in interviews, but whether the film was Oscar-caliber or a bomb waiting to blow, he handled every assignment equally. Watch LaFontaine at work »
"My philosophy is that you have to really believe what you're reading, even if you think the film's a piece of junk," he told Swindle magazine. "Even the worst picture is someone's favorite film, and that someone is the fan I am always talking to." iReport: Share your thoughts on "the Voiceover King"
He also provided the voice for hundreds of thousands of commercials, for companies including General Motors, Ford, McDonald's, Coca-Cola and many others, according to his Web site. Slideshow: LaFontaine doing "Godfather II," "Friday the 13th" »
The good-humored LaFontaine was willing to poke fun at himself, particularly in a recent ad for Geico insurance, in which he gave dramatic flair to a woman's story about her car accident. He also voiced the trailer for "The Simpsons Movie," in which his descriptions were mimicked by commentary from the film's characters.
