Spotlight

NEW NBFC MEMBER - RENÉ CYR - MONCTON, NB

My name is Rene Cyr and I am a scriptwriter/ researcher who has recently created a writing team called Pandora's Box Ink . We write for film & theatre, as well as paper and virtual books and publications. We are currently working on two documentaries for television as well as 3 e-book projects for the French school district system.

I became involved in theatre in high school and after graduating I worked on the feature film Children of a Lesser God and got the film bug. I continued to do theatre while at university and in community theatre, when I moved to Vancouver. I wrote several plays for the Vancouver Children's Festival and the Fools Parade Festival. I also wrote 2 radio comedy skits for CBC ( Cod-co , Double Exposure ) programs. Then I wrote Junkyard Jungle , an ecologically-based play with all the sets and props built from recycled materials, which toured B.C., Alberta, Washington and Oregon and won several awards.

I worked in the film and television industry in British Columbia, mostly on American Feature films ( We're No Angels , Stake-out , 13th Warrior , Look Who's talking Too , Bird on a Wire ) and television shows ( 21 Jump Street ", X-Files ). Most of my film work was in props, sets and costumes. The exception to this has been my work on several documentaries as a commentator-activist (obviously this was volunteer work). Then I got involved in the porn industry, just joking, checking to see if you are still reading!

I moved back to New Brunswick to work with director Chris Leblanc (now a member of Pandora's Box Ink) on the television series Lunatics for TFO. Then I opened "Cha Cha Cha," a clothing boutique that custom designed clothes and jewelry (we also design clothing for TV, film, commercials and performers). I also designed costumes and props for other local films ( Yvon Durelle ) and the design company Artfx.

Then I worked on Johnny Talk Talk as a writer and "The Politically Incorrect commentator". During this time i also worked again with Chris Leblanc on the film, Bricklin .

I am passionate about my art and completely devoted to taking it as far as I can go...

MEMBER UPDATES/MEMBER UPDATES/MEMBER UPDATES

SAINT JOHN - Gretchen Kelbaugh was pleased to receive an Arts Board grant this month, a competition earmarked for artists residing in the greater Saint John area. Hers is $9000, and there were three other recipients this year.

The criteria are: project must be about Saint John, must involve one or more Saint John community groups and must expand the artist's artistic experience.

With the help of local historian Harold Wright, the Saint John Arts Centre and the NB Museum, Gretchen will produce an animated short video called History Animates my Future . The POV will be that of her son, Alex, as he becomes acquainted with his Harding ancestors and their role in settling Saint John. Trying to make history engaging is a familiar challenge to Gretchen, who published With All Her Might ; the Life of Gertrude Harding, Militant Suffragette, a biography of another Harding ancestor, and who is just finishing co-writing The History of Rothesay. The use of stop-motion and other forms of animation is the artistic challenge for this video project.

As well as researching and co-writing the Rothesay history (for the Town's 150th birthday), Gretchen is promoting her educational video Menocracy, about women and politics. She has both European and Canadian distribution so far. It recently screened in Fredericton again as part of a women's conference put on by the NB Federation of Labour. Early audience reaction is very enthusiastic.

Discover Canada without even leaving your living room!

Fredericton, April 7, 2010 - That's what Katimavik, Canada's leading national youth service program, has to offer if you become a host family between April 30th and May 9th, 2010. Our organization is presently looking for families who are willing to host Katimavik volunteers aged 17 to 21 from across Canada. Here is your chance to get to know a young person who is presently volunteering in your community while introducing them to your way of living!

As part of the Katimavik program, volunteers stay with a host family of the region in order to better understand their reality and culture. For some volunteers, this is also an excellent opportunity to benefit from a full-fledged linguistic immersion. This precious experience will be filled with discoveries for both your family and the Katimavik volunteer.

How can you become a billeting family?
Contact Janet at 506 455-3875 and she will be happy to discuss opportunities with you! Each family that hosts a Katimavik volunteer receives a stipend to offset costs.

Katimavik is in Fredericton!
The Katimavik group arrived in Fredericton on March 31 and will live in the community for the next three months, before heading back to their home provinces after completing their nine-month program. The group is comprised of five women and five men who are living in a house rented by Katimavik and are supervised by a project leader who lives with them. These young volunteers are working five days a week at local non-profit organizations including Boys and Girls Club, City of Fredericton Parks and Trees Division, Multicultural Association of Fredericton, Neil Squire Society, New Brunswick Lung Association, New Brunswick Heritage Branch, SPCA, UNBITI Footprints Day Care and York Manor.

NEW BRUNSWICK - Subject : Changes in structure of Government support to audio-visual industry in New Brunswick: NB Film joins broader cultural sector in Wellness, Culture and Sport

As some of you are aware, government has made fundamental changes to the management of the government support to the film, television and new media industry in New Brunswick. Effective April 1, 2010, support programs and services for this industry joined the cultural industry sector under the Arts Development Branch of the Department of Wellness, Culture, and Sport, under the management of Nathalie Dubois.

To provide a brief background, in April of 2009, New Brunswick Film was transferred to the Department of Wellness, Culture, and Sport. Government was of the opinion that support to the film, television, and new media industry would be better served within a department that has significant linkages to the cultural and artistic community. A review of the industry was undertaken shortly thereafter and recommendations formulated regarding its future. This review included input from the New Brunswick Producers' Association, the New Brunswick Film Advisory Committee as well as individual film and television producers. In addition, a consultation session was organized with NB Film staff, industry stakeholders and senior management at the department of Wellness, Culture and Sport.

Recommendations put forward addressed the New Brunswick Film Tax Credit, the organizational structure of NB Film and the need to align financial programs with cultural objectives. The following highlights key changes affecting film, television, and new media industry supported by government:

1) The New Brunswick Film Tax Credit has been extended for a 10 year period (it was previously renewed on a year-to-year basis);
2) A 10% Regional Bonus has been added to the Tax Credit for productions that are based primarily in a rural location (defined as projects outside the three large urban centers of Moncton, Fredericton, and Saint John);
3) The Travel Assistance Program budget has been increased, facilitating producers access to film and television markets;
4) New Brunswick Film's administrative structure was streamlined, avoiding cuts to the programming budget (a total of 2 positions dedicated to film were established within the Arts Development Branch);
5) Due to a reduction in the administrative budget, international business development efforts will be streamlined;
6) The Moncton and Tracadie offices were closed, with all activities being centralized in Fredericton.
Changes to the New Brunswick Tax Credit are effective January 1, 2010. All other changes were introduced with the start of the 2010/2011 fiscal year. The focus of our attention will now turn to working with producers, key stakeholders and partners to ensure the long term growth and success of our audiovisual industry.

Ghislain Labbé is now the Senior Industry Development Officer and Antoinette Basque-Doiron the Programs Officer for film, television and new media. The new contact information is as follows:

If you have any questions or require clarification, please do not hesitate to contact Nathalie Dubois at (506) 453-2729.

Ellen Barry

RECRUITING FOR COMEDY-SKETCH TROUPE

Do you like Kids in the Hall? Picnicface? We're looking to recruit talent to start up a comedy sketch troupe to do short video skits for YouTube. If you're creative, funny, flexible (able to do on camera and behind the camera duties), we want you (yes... YOU!). Interested? Contact either Leah Warren (Leah_hatfield@hotmail.com) or Bunthivy Nou (bunthivy.nou@bunthivy.com).

OPPORTUNITY FOR ACTORS - VOLUNTEER

I am contacting you on behalf of Communications New Brunswick for an upcoming project that will be taking place through Orange Sprocket, a design company here in Fredericton. We are currently looking for models for some photoshoots. The project goal is to enhance government communication with potential immigrants and New Brunswickers living in the province through the use of photography marketing materials. We will be doing a number of photoshoots that include individuals of various ethnicities, different age groups and families and professionals in various work settings.

Unfortunately in the past CNB has asked for volunteers to do this. It's a not for profit effort and the budgets are pretty thin which does not allow for compensation so this is volunteer.

If you have anyone that may be interested in participating in our campaign, please get in touch with me through the information provided below.

Thank you so much and please don't hesitate if you have any questions.
