MEMBER UPDATES/MEMBER UPDATES/MEMBER UPDATES
Filmmaker Takes An Acting Workshop
As a new filmmaker, I’m keen to learn the ins and outs of the NB film community. I thought I knew quite a bit, viewing it from the outside, but I also knew I wanted a more intimate look.
(Photo - Chris Giles and Robert Vinet on Film Co-op member production)
With that in mind, I joined the NBFC in 2009. I was immediately impressed by the kind, positive, generous, and creative minds that make up the Co-op membership. Everyone was encouraging and happy to help me learn and work with other filmmakers on their projects.
As soon as Cat released the Fredericton/Moncton and Saint John schedules for the New Brunswick Filmmakers' Co-operative 2010 Workshop Program, I signed up for 10 workshops (check out the NBFC training link at: http://www.nbfilmcop.com/training.htm ). I was ready to absorb as much as I could directly from the people who knew what they were talking about.
When one of the workshop needed to be rescheduled, and I had a conflict with the new date, I searched for an alternative. I saw that Wally MacKinnon, an actor that I respected, would be instructing an acting workshop. The description stated he would cover the basic tools needed to become a working actor, from preparing for an audition,
to techniques in acting, working in front of the camera, and the responsibilities of the actor.
With my own film project approaching, “Lies To God”
) I signed up.
The workshop was made up of seasoned actors as well as those who were trying to break in. Then there was me.
When I introduced myself, I explained that I had no desire to be either in front of the camera or on stage. But before I had a chance to take another breath I had to explain my motivations for joining them.
I told them I wanted to see what professional actors expected at auditions and film shoots, and that I was taking the workshop from the directors perspective. Someone suggested more directors should be taking acting classes. And I can see why.
Wally certainly knows his craft. Not only does he have an impressive resume, both on stage and film, but he explained it at a level that even I could understand.
We all had a chance to work in front of the camera in a mock audition. Everyone was
patient and kind with my performance. I hope my takes don’t end up on YouTube.
Thank you Wally and workshop participants for allowing me to get a glimpse of your craft. It’s not an easy one.
This workshop give me a better appreciation for what an actor needs from a director. My film will be better for for taking Wally's class.

The Arts
MONCTON -A Question of Beauty - Premiere Screening
“A Question of Beauty” is an independent, locally produced feature length documentary film that challenges beauty stereotypes and celebrates women. Presented as being wonderfully malleable and self-interpreting, the definition of beauty is examined by a cast of twenty-nine women and girls between the ages of 10 and 76. Its diversity is celebrated through the works of fourteen female artists from the Greater Moncton Area including Cathy Linfield, Jocelyne Vautour, Ann Balch, Kristen Atkins, Elaine Amyot, Darlene Teahen and Dominik Robichaud.
Beauty is presented philosophically by a Druid priest from England, it is considered culturally by an anthropologist from Mount Allison University, it is discussed personally by a former Dutch model, and its physical expression is explained by local belly dance instructor Barb Aubie.
The film does include one exception to the “all female” cast; an 87 year-old man who was a personal friend of Miss Marilyn Monroe. Charles Foster, who resides in our very own Riverview, NB, compliments the discussion with personal stories that give insight into the inner beauty of this amazing woman.
“A Question of Beauty” is created, directed and produced by Film Co-op member Colleen Furlotte and co-produced by John Maher. It not only honors the inherent beauty of women and girls, but is also a celebration of the beauty of our local community. Various images from in and around the Greater Moncton Area compliment the show, including those of sculptures from Aberdeen Park and the Université de Moncton campus. Production locations included the Thomas Williams House, and the Bouctouche dunes and botanical gardens.
The film will be screened for the first time at Moncton's glorious Capitol Theatre on Sunday, May 2nd, at 7:00 pm. Reception to follow in the theatre lobby. The event is free and open to the general public.
Sincere thanks to the Capitol Theatre for generously sponsoring this event.

MUSICIAN NEEDS YOUR HELP
My name is Gene Kondusky. I'm a dual American-Canadian citizen currently living in Montreal (about to move to Fredericton to start a PhD program). I've just completed a musical project under the name of Kites Overhead . It's mostly me, my guitars, and my computer, but sometimes friends drop in and sing a bit. My sources of inspiration are varied: you'll likely hear pieces of Sigur Rós and Mogwai just as readily as you'll hear Leonard Cohen or Neil Young.
I've decided to divide these recordings into two releases: an EP and a full-length album. The EP is a free digital release, called "In the Shadow of the Mountain." It contains two tracks from the album, as well as a cover of a song by The Magnetic Fields. It's being released through my own imprint, Home Is Not Here, and was made available online on March 31st.
The album is called
You are a secret, and you must never tell it
. It's recently been mastered, and, once album art is finalized, will likely be available on the website and in CD format sometime in the summer.
I believe that music should be made available to consumers at a price that they can live with. If that means free, then that's perfectly fine with me. I released the EP as a free download because I believe that the most important thing is to have people hear my music. Having said that, I'm still interested in recouping the expenses of recording. My principal strategy is to license my music to various media outlets (TV, film, video games, new media, etc). Unfortunately, most media want to see a proven track record before they are willing to license music. Since this is a new project, I have yet to license anything to
anyone. This makes it very difficult to get my foot in the door.
This is where you come in. In an effort to "build my brand," I am currently offering to license my music to your project with no charge. My only condition is that the license is non-exlusive: that is, if one of my songs is included in the soundtrack of your project, that I still have the right to license the song elsewhere.
If this sounds promising to you, please download a copy of In the Shadow of the Mountain from the Home Is Not Here website. If you like what you hear, but perhaps those songs don't quite fit in to your project, you can download an incomplete copy of the full-length album You are a secret, and you must never tell it here. (Please note that album art is currently in process.)
Thanks so much. I appreciate your willingness just to read this. I hope you get around to listening to the music, and I hope even more that you like what you hear and are willing to include it in your work.
Cheers,
Gene
