AHA is a member's driven group and meetings and sessions will be a mixture of practical/hands-on and discussions.
Actors 16 years and up, all sizes and experiences are welcome!

FREDERICTON - NEW MEMBER - JASON NICHOLSON
I have been in business for 11 years across a variety of different disciplines and have had the opportunity to do a lot of travel across North America.
My primary role throughout the 11 years has been sales & marketing accompanied by some short-term managerial roles. During my travels some of the experiences that I have had encouraged me to want to pursue a dream of mine which is to make my own films.
I am completely new to the NB film community and look forward to participating in and making films. I like what I know thus far about the NB Film Co-op and hope to make a valuable contribution. Now on with the volunteer work to get making shorts :)!!

FREDERICTON
- RENEWED MEMBER - JOHN CHRISTENSON
After what was a very long hiatus between classes John set his graphic design business on hold and enrolled in UNB’s Multimedia and Film Studies Programs. Shortly after enrollment John’s interest in film and video production lead him to the Film Co-op where he volunteered his time to the Film Co-op’s Board of Directors, Tidal Wave Film Festival, Silver Wave Film Festival, Under the Stars Classic Film Series, Monday Night Film Series, Film Co-op special events and numerous members’ shoots.
Over the years John has offered his services on commercial and corporate ventures. In 2007 John joined the Film Co-op staff in the administration of their Certificate in Film and Television Training Program, which was followed quickly thereafter as Co-producer on Diplomatic Relations. Following Diplomatic Relations John produced and directed “Small Steps”, a diabetes educational video for the New Brunswick Aboriginal Peoples Council. Currently John can be found teaching Media Studies and Visual Storytelling as part of the Centre for Arts and Technology’s Digital Film Studies Program as well as offering graphic design services to Sir Speedy Printing.
In his off hours, John is presently following an interest in local history through his association with the Marysville Heritage Committee. John, with fellow committee members, is busy gathering audio and visual recounts from local seniors and residents.

MEMBER UPDATES MEMBER UPDATES
By Saint John based member Andrew MacCormack
There are two things I love the most about being a part of Hemmings House pictures. The first is that we are a group of young guys running our own business, doing what we love and earning a living.
The second is that we ALWAYS end up shooting the coolest gigs and no matter what you specialize in, you always play a major role in every production. This most recent one was no different. I think Greg said it best today when I heard him say: "This concert doesn't have a director, it was directed by Hemmings House Pictures!".
Another live concert. Seems to be our bread and butter. There is nothing else I would rather be shooting. I love it so much! This time it was for the New Brunswick Youth Orchestra, accompanied by Matt Andersen and "Les Muses".
It was also nice to get out of the editing suite. The last few weeks have been very stressful. I am currently in crunch time editing 6 episodes for our latest TV series "Kardinal Sinners" at PowerPost in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Dealing with the broadcaster and working through technical issues has been trying at times to say the least. So this shoot would be some welcome creative release that I was really looking forward to.
So when I heard we were going to be shooting a 7-camera setup, it made me all warm and excited! Steve and Greg did a great job in pre-production and lined up, what I think was our best shooting team ever.
We had six Sony PMW EX1's and one Ex 3. On wide on the balcony we had Alastair Meux. A guy who has more experience than everyone at HHP put together. Steve was on a 16 foot dolly behind the back row of the crowd for one of my favorite concert shots. When it tracks the back of people's hands and heads with the stage in the background. Such a cool shot!
Our veteran comedian, Mike Burchhill from IVS was with his 10 foot jib on stage left, while our new friend Michel Caissie from CBC in Moncton shot with his 18 foot jib just off stage right. Lauchlan was hand held, Greg on the monopod and I was on the Glidecam. Lock, Greg and I were responsible for covering the close-ups around the stage. Backstage we had our buddy James Shaw from Red Fish audio with his 24 track audio setup. Nothing is more important when shooting music (or anything for that matter) than to make sure your audio is stellar. Lastly we had our unsung heroes: Our Production Assistants: Tim Maloney, Nick LeBlanc, John Phillips and Nick Foster. These four guys were amazing! Without them we would have been in big trouble. They busted their asses all day and were so crucial to making this whole thing come together so smoothly. Big props to them!
I had a blast operating the Glidecam 4000. It had been a while since I've used one, so the night before the concert I was going up and down the halls of our hotel shooting James and Mike drinking beers to get some practice in, while taking frequent beer breaks myself. Then basically had it on from sunrise to sunset the day of the show, making sure I was as comfortable as possible with that thing on. Glidecams or Steadicams are my favorite types of shots. I love the three dimensional effect they give. There aren't too many big budget movies or television dramas that don't use one these days. Can't blame them. I'm really pumped to have this thing around now, I'm going to be using it a lot.
The shoot went really well. It was lit beautifully as well, which is always crucial. It was also a little stressful shooting with so many EX cameras cause we didn't have enough SxS cards to go around. Our PA's were working overtime making sure we all had fresh cards to shoot on...hence why they were heroes! Don't think we missed a second of the whole shoot....literally. The great thing about shooting with the SxS cards and going tapeless is that you never have to stop your camera to switch a tape. When one card is done, it automatically records on the next one, meaning you don't miss one second of the show. This was always a minor issue with tapes. The future is here and the future is tapeless shooting!
Everyone really rocked on this shoot. It was different shooting a big orchestra like that. Normally we only have to worry about covering a band of four or five, but in this instance the were more than 80 people on stage! It was tough to decide who gets the close-up time.
Having two jibs is just way too cool! I can't wait to see how it turns out. I'm jealous I don't get to edit this one. Just thinking about cutting such cool looking footage gives me butterflies. It's a beautiful thing this business! As much stress, frustration and heart break that comes along with it, I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world!
There are thousands of people who would kill to be in our shoes, doing this and getting paid for it. No doubt its hard work, but is it ever work if you are doing what you love?
Which reminds me...it's officially two years since I started with Hemmings House Pictures with Greg in his basement. Now two years later we have an office in Saint John and Halifax and and a team that has grown 5 times over! Let's just hope our good fortune continues...

Getting the best publicity during and after the shooting of your short or low budget feature can make the difference between the finished film growing old and musty on a shelf to it having a golden premiere with your cast, crew and supporters.
Jim Lavoie will take you through the process of publicity on a production answering some of the eternal questions of the indie filmmaker: How much press is too much? What should be the focus of the promotion: the film or the filmmaker? How do I get press coverage of my production to garner me sponsorship and support from the community? Will getting a lot of press for my film help me to get support for my next film or project?
INSTRUCTOR'S BIOGRAPHY
Jim has been a member of the NB Film Co-op since 2005 and has worked in publicity for Film Co-op member's projects since the beginning, most notably NBFC member Joel Thompson's low budget feature, They Didn't Make It .

fILMMAKERS eager to network with Film Co-op members and get involved.
As the result of a contest through Rogers Television in NB, a group of Greater Moncton emerging filmmakers had the opportunity to showcase their imagination with the miniseries "Marshland Tales." The group, which includes Eric Allain, Jarrid and Justin Brooks, Jeff Steeves and Marty Bourgeois spent the 2007-08 television season producing weekly one minute shorts, which culminated with their own thirty minute season finale.
The story centered around local TV personality "Marshland", an actor with his own show. He eventually drew the attention of irate viewer "Lord Steve the 1st", who thought he would make a more suitable television star.
Although the experience was quite positive, there were times which were not so pleasant, including that extremely cold day in Shediac or the catastrophe of the faulty tripod.
The group have since focused their attention on other projects, but the time spent collaborating together on "Marshland Tales" will lead to other productions in the future.
the entire series is available on Youtube under Marshland Tales episode 1 to 34
Our emails and phone numbers are as follows if anyone wants to contact us to chat about creating stuff in the Moncton area. We look forward to getting involved with the Film Co-op.

THE UNDERGROUND ECONOMY: NOT YOUR PROBLEM? VIDEO CONTEST!
OK check this out. We're the Canada Revenue Agency, and we're running a video contest. Here's the deal.
We want you to produce a YouTube video that shows, in your words, using your thinking, your creativity, how the underground economy is… well, a bad thing – a thing that hurts all Canadians.
What is the underground economy? It's about people and companies who do business or perform services without reporting their income or collecting and paying their taxes.
Even though there are some big-time penalties, it still goes on and it still messes up our national economy, our communities, and Canadian families.
Because taxes pay for important things. Schools, hospitals, roads, parks… it's a long list. You're paying your share, and people who participate in the underground economy are doing so at your expense. And that's not fair.
But we'd like your take on it: choose one or both of these themes and create the ultimate YouTube anti-underground economy video. One, the negative impact of the underground economy, why it's bad for people and society or the risks; what can happen to people who get involved in this kind of activity.
Now what would a contest be without rules. Here we go
- You must be a Canadian resident.
- Your production team can include up to four people.
- Only two entries per team or individual.
Your video must:
- Be between one and two minutes long;
- Be uploaded to YouTube on or before the contest deadline
- Use only original music (music you and your team composed) or use royalty-free and rights-free music; and
- Be in either English or French or Bilingual.
- Finally, your video can't contain any images not created by the you or your team
Go to the CRA contest website, to enter and for all the rules.
So: Get going. Get thinking, scripting, shooting. You may be on your way toward fame and glory and prizes too. So… lights camera… you know the deal.
