BELL ALIANT NURTURES YOUNG FILMMAKERS AT SWFF 2010 (Below Photo -  Michel Guitard, NBFC Teen Film Camp Instructor and  Ron Forsythe, Regional Manager - Central NB for Bell Aliant are surrounded by young budding filmmakers)

NBFC E-news - Thursday, August 26, 2010

Spotlight

BELL ALIANT SPONSORS SWFF 2010

Ron Forsythe, Regional Manager - Central NB for Bell Aliant dropped in this week to the Film Co-op to give Bell Aliant's sponsorship cheque to Film Co-op Executive Director Tony Merzetti for SWFF. It was perfect timing as Kids Film Camp instructor Michel Guitard and his teen film peeps were downstairs brainstorming ideas for trailers for SWFF on its tenth anniversary.

The Film Co-op Kids Film Camps are so popular now that three had to be organized this year due to the high demand.

Afterwards Cat sat down with Ron (virtually) and asked him some questions about his background and Bell Aliant's sponsorship.

Cat: Ron, how did you end up at Bell Aliant? How long have you been there and what is your background, your education?

Ron: I started out working at NBTel as a summer student and then decided to stay on. After working for a year or so, I went to NBCC for two years to take Electronic Technology then worked in Fredericton as a technician. Since that time I continued with my studies to complete my BBA, and Bsc CS at UNB Fredericton and my MBA at UNBSJ. Over my 34 years at NBTel/Bell Aliant, I have held various positions in Accounting, Marketing, Sales and Customer Service.

Cat: As a child, were you interested in films and creating them, did you watch a lot of films at the theatre?

Ron: I wasn’t really interested in films as a child and grew up in rural NB where access to films was quite limited.

Cat: Why is it important for Bell Aliant to sponsor the Silver Wave Film Festival every year with a strong focus on Youth Programming?

Ron: At Bell Aliant we try to be as diverse as possible in our sponsorship but try to maintain a common theme of assisting those that work with the youth in our communities.

Cat: Why do you feel the arts are so important now, more than ever?

Ron: It provides exposure to an element in our society that not all have a chance to be exposed to. I think it would be good if programmes were available for those who cannot afford to be involved on their own or have no encouragement from their parents.

Cat: What do you like the most about NB?

Ron: I like the fact that it is small enough that no matter what part of the province that you are from, it is easy to make a connection with people from all regions.

Cat: What do you like the least about NB?

Ron: I think it would be the fact that with the smaller population base and thus smaller overall economy, opportunities may be more limited.

Cat: If someone asked you to act in a film, would you?

Ron: Probably not, I am quite reserved.

Cat: List your top 5 favourite films of all time

Ron: Citizen Kane, Forest Gump, The Green Mile, The Wizard of Oz – original, A Christmas Carol

2010 SWFF VOLUNTEER PROFILE - LYNN Y. RICHARD

I have been a Film Co-op member since 2003 and have been interested in filmmaking all my life. I finally did something about it in 1999 by taking the English 3999 class. When I joined the Film Co-op, I volunteered with the Tidal Wave Film Festival as finance manager. My 17 years of banking helped Tony quite a lot with the festival. I joined the board and was active for only a few months before taking over as Festival Director for the 2004 Tidal Wave. From 2003 to 2005, I actively worked on numerous films as an actor, production designer and as craft services. My work is for money, the Film Co-op is my passion. I will be taking on some responsibilities for this year's festival and I can't wait to help out.

If any member needs help on a film especially in the production side, let me know.

OTHER NB FESTIVALS

The Saint Andrews Film Festival would like to thank all the filmmakers who submitted their films into this years festival.

The list of films playing will be posted on the website www.saff.ca by the end of the week. Thanks for your support and we hope to see fellow co-op members at the screenings.

BACKGROUND ON THE FESTIVAL

The Saint Andrews Film Festival was started by myself Jesse Anthony. The idea for the festival came about after taking a trip down for the day to have some lunch and enjoy the town with some friends. while eating lunch along the waterfront I kind of got a feeling of what it was like to be back in Cannes France for a moment. That's when I thought hey, wouldn't it would be neat if there was a film festival in Saint Andrews, so I went online and looked to see if there was already one and there wasn't. That's when I decided it would be fun to show some independent films from New Brunswick around the world. The next day I started working on the website and it went from there. Since then I've been doing most of the work on my own but now I have Gary Beatty onboard helping out with some organization stuff as well and also have a jury lined up to pick the award winners and nominees.

The NB Film Co-op has been there to help by getting the word out to filmmakers for film submissions as well as sponsoring the screenwriting panel with Lex Gigeroff and Tony Sekulich.

Ottawa film festival to focus on local scene
By CBC News

The organizers behind the first Ottawa International Film Festival opening this weekend are hoping to draw the eyes of the world on what they say is a thriving local film scene.

The organizers behind the first Ottawa International Film Festival opening this weekend are hoping to draw the eyes of the world on what they say is a thriving local film scene .

Lacking the glossy Hollywood sheen of the Toronto International Film Festival or the international cachet of the venerable Montreal World Film Festival, the new festival is striking out as a showcase for independent filmmakers, says executive director Nina Bains.

"We're not trying to be Hollywood. That's not what this is about. Ottawa has a really cool scene that just needs to be brought out," said Bains.

Ottawa has long been a destination for film buffs from around the world thanks to its annual animation festival. But local filmmakers working outside of animation haven't had the same showcase for their work.

"Finally Ottawa has a place to showcase local filmmakers and films from around the world," said Stephanie Swedlove, an Ottawa native currently living in Vancouver who co-produced the short film, Nuit Blanche, which is showing at the festival.

"I think Ottawa is a big enough city to have its own festival," said Swedlove.

Bains said the festival provides a forum for local filmmakers to screen their work without being a member of a film or video organization. But she's also hoping the festival can be a launching pad and said her group is working with Toronto's Movieola, a channel that screens shorts, to bring some of the films to the small screen.

The festival was born out of a moviemaking challenge called boxcART Bains helped launch last year.

"We just had this vision of doing this party in our backyard and slowly turned into this. And it hasn't even been a year yet," she said.

This year's event features a new challenge: 21 teams will screen their music videos at the Lieutenant's Pump pub on Elgin Street on Friday night.

The organizers have also lined up two nights of screenings at the Mayfair Theatre, with local and international films and some films from Toronto's International Film Festival, which begins on Sept. 9.

The festival opens Thursday with a kickoff party and then runs for three days from Aug. 20-22.

FREDERICTON - FILM SCREENING

For a Year, They Bought Nothing and Threw Away Zilch.

Now Vancouver Filmmakers are Cycling Canada and 'Talking Trash' with
Their Documentary The Clean Bin Project .

What started as a personal challenge - a household competition to see
who could produce the least amount of garbage - has now become a feature documentary that will be coming to Fredericton for a single showing on Sept 3th. Filmmakers Grant Baldwin and Jenny Rustemeyer are currently on the road, bicycling across Canada, showing their film The Clean Bin Project and having engaging discussions on waste reduction in communities across the country.

The Clean Bin Project is a feature documentary film about a regular
couple and their quest to answer the question "is it possible to live
completely waste free?" Partners Jen and Grant go head to head in a
battle to see who can swear off consumerism and produce the least
landfill garbage in an entire year. Their light-hearted competition to
refuse, reduce and recycle their way to the smallest garbage bin is set
against a darker examination of the large-scale environmental impacts of our "throw-away society"

"We had watched a lot of environmental films that were really
informative, but we always felt so overwhelmed and deflated at the end of them," explains Grant, who directed and edited the film, "we wanted to make a movie that showed how choosing to do just one thing, like reducing your trash, can be not only manageable, but really empowering and fun."

The pair has already been garnering accolades for their project and were recently awarded the 2010 MOBI award for journalism and media from the Recycling Council of British Columbia. "We just started as a personal challenge, but it turns out that people are really intrigued by how we managed to produce so little garbage," says Jenny. "The response has been great; people say they have been really inspired to make changes in their own lives."

The Clean Bin Project cycle tour will be at the Charlotte Street Art
Center (Fredericton) at 7pm. Admission is by donation, and there will be door prizes.

SAINT JOHN - CREW CALL

I’m putting together a crew for a short 18th century adventure/ thriller called The Beckon of the Beast . The film tells the story of a hunting party sent from a British naval vessel to a deserted island. Instead of following the order to “bring back fresh meat” a self seeking officer puts his crew in peril leading them after a mythical beast.

Shooting is will take place mostly in the Saint John area and is tentatively scheduled for two weekends in late September and early October. This is a volunteer/deferral project and roles that involve equipment use will require film co-op membership who are trained or are available to be trained.

If you’re interested in being a part in the production contact me (Nathan Savage) at nathansavage44@gmail.com , (please indicate any areas of specialization and or interest).

A casting call will follow soon.

This project is made possible through the Short Film Venture Grant through NB Film and the New Brunswick Filmmakers' Co-operative.
