FILMS ARE AN EVER CHANGING LIFE LONG EXPERIENCE

My love of films started as a young child when my father, BIG Arn as I called him, and I watched classic Hollywood films on television in the different genres (comedy, drama, horror & science fiction) with all the legendary film actors from the past. We also sang all the songs of those bygone days as we drove around looking for places to get a snack.

Years later (I won't say how many), I saw a film at the drive-in in Taintville (between Miramichi and Chatham, NB). I was 17 years old and I loved it. It was a science fiction film.

Unlike other people my age at the time who stood in line at the movie theatre to see it many times, I saw it only once at a drive-in and it changed yet again how I viewed and absorbed  films.

The whole atmosphere of a drive-in can't be duplicated. The warmth of a summer night, smell of popcorn and fast food, groups of teenagers chatting outside their cars, lawn chairs, packed cars of young and old people.

Then, it was back to the movie theatre again for me as the Hollywood Blockbuster came into being. In between those epic viewing times were the Canadian films that I still love to watch over and over, now on DVD and on television some nights at weird times. There is gold down below but a few listed most people will call bad films, but I still love them to this day.

Goin’ Down the Road (1970), The Rowdyman (1972), Mon oncle Antoine (1971), Cannibal Girls (1973), Black Christmas (1974), Lies My Father Told Me (1975), The Clown Murders (1976), The Changeling (1979) - one of my favorite horror films, Meatballs (1979), Les bons débarras (1980), Scanners (1981), The Grey Fox (1982), Videodrome (1983), The Bay Boy (1984), Joshua Then and Now (1985), My American Cousin (1985), The Adventure of Faustus Bidgood (1986), Le Déclin de l'empire américain (1986), I've Heard the Mermaids Singing (1987), Tales from the Gimli Hospital (1988), Dead Ringers (1988), Jesus of Montreal (1999) and many more.

Now, my favorite films are Film Co-op member films as well as outside independent films that are showcased at Silver Wave and other festivals each year.

When I was researching how film started in Canada when I first started helping out at the Film Co-op years ago, I enjoyed reading about the most successful producer in Canada in the early days of film. It was Ernest Shipman, who had already established his reputation as a promoter in the US when he returned to Canada in 1919 with his author/actress wife, Nell Shipman, to produce Back to God's Country in Calgary. This romantic adventure story of an embattled heroine triumphing over villainy was released worldwide and returned a 300% profit to its Calgary backers. During the next 3 years Shipman established companies in several Canadian cities and made 6 more features based on Canadian novels and filmed not in studios, as was then common, but on location. Though these films - eg, God's Crucible (1920), Cameron of the Royal Mounted (1921), The Man from Glengarry (1922) and The Rapids (1922) - were not as profitable as his first, they were not failures. Only his last film, Blue Water (1923), made in New Brunswick , was a disaster. Shipman left Canada and died in 1931 in relative obscurity. (from the Canadian Encyclopedia online)

Typical Canadian ending.

ONE-0N-ONE WORKSHOP TESTIMONIALS FROM SATISFIED MEMBERS

The Final Cut Pro one-on-one workshop with Michel Guitard went super well. He is very well versed in Final Cut and he showed me how to use and set up the decks at the Film Co-op etc… Very cool. He is a good teacher too, fun, on the ball, and he tests you every now and then to see if you retained it. The lesson ran from 10 am to 7 pm. We were there for 9 hours.

Playback Daily.com - CSC AWARDS OPEN UP

by: Staff
Dec 5, 2008

The Canadian Society of Cinematographers has for the first time opened its annual awards to outsiders. Non-members -- that is, any cinematographer residing in Canada -- are now free to submit to the CSCs. This is the first time in the organization's 50-year history that non-members have been included in all of the annual award categories.

"We want to make sure that the works of all cinematographers in this country have the opportunity to compete," said the CSC's Albert Dunk in a release. "We want the best competing with the best. No exceptions."

The awards remain open to all CSC members, whether residing in Canada or elsewhere. The deadline for entries to the 13 categories -- including docs, lifestyle/reality, music videos, TV and film -- is Jan. 23, 2009.

MUSIC STUFF FOR SALE

I'm downsizing my PA stuff and wondered if you might have some friends and acquaintances who could use some gear?...

I have 1000w follow-spot for sale complete with case and tri-pod. The bulb probably doesn't have 20 hours on it! It's an oldie, but a goodie; something like us! First person with $100 can have it !

I've also got a road case for a 36 channel board, and an amp rack on wheels (I thinks it's about 8 rack spaces, but I haven't looked at it in a long time!) I'd take any reasonable offer for this stuff! (I need room in my baby-barn!!)

If you wouldn't mind sending this out to some folks on your email list, I'd sure appreciate it!

Any interested parties can reach me by email at mudalley@nbnet.nb.ca or by phone at 458-1701.

Thanks again!

SCORING FOR FILMS

I'm a published singer/songwriter/producer, and me and a fellow songwriter are looking to get into scoring for films. So I was wondering if you knew of any film directors who are looking for a composer? We are looking for projects in order to build up our portfolios.

Here are links to my music sites;

www.pamelapachal.com
www.myspace..com/pamelapachal

now, keep in mind that these songs are only the style I use for my own personal career. I have been trained and can write classical, heavy, country, instrumental, jazz, etc...

Hope you can forward this on to any film directors you know!
