AS SCENE FROM HERE

By Jim Lavoie

Dark Radius

"I love the nightlife" and you had to if you were part of the recently shot  Shore Road Pictures (Gia Milani and Tony Whalen) production Dark Radius . I was on set for one night and the cast and crew were at the top of their game in this suspense thriller. I am told that you can identify cast and crew members by id tags. Sounds dark and mysterious to me!

Just In the Nick of Time

Looking for that perfect stocking stuffer? Well, it just so happens that the documentary spotlighting those notorious Leafs fans and their iconic impact on Fredericton (Gruff & Ready: The Mazzuca's Story) is now on sale.

Gruff & Ready was this year's Viewers Choice Award winner at the Silver Wave Film Festival. The documentary is a revealing behind the scenes (or counter) look at John and Gus Mazzuca who offered customer service in their own unique fashion. This film captures the ambiance of what this local landmark (Mazzuca's Variety Store) meant to the family through the years and all those who crossed, or dared to, their path.

Director Tony Merzetti has captured a Who's Who of Fredericton from postman to politician, from Mayor Brad Woodside to Premier Shawn Graham. Hockey great Willie O'Ree, local, national, media personalities; all were prey to the barbs of the Mazzuca's special brand of humour. There are so many locals seen and heard in this fascinating piece of history that you or someone you know is probably in the film.

Gruff & Ready is available at the NB Film Co-op for purchase - Monday - Friday (10am -6pm) as well as on this Saturday, Dec 20th at the annual Mazzuca's Christmas party (7 am -10 am) at the Pita Pit on York Street.

HOPEWELL NOW IN POST

It has been a couple of months since we shot my Short Film Venture film Hopewell, but I still want to throw props out to my peeps who helped me put this film together.

My partner and wife Nathalie and I moved back to New Brunswick after being away for almost five years.

Before we moved I was an active NB Film Co-op member for years who made films and worked on other Co-op productions since 1998. I have seen the membership grow, technology change, and the Co-op move forward. Essentially, the Co-op has grown and with it, its skilled membership of filmmakers, crew, and actors. All of which, I witnessed and experienced while making Hopewell.

First, I want to thank my wonderful wife Nathalie, who has been my biggest supporter and who has trucked through the mud with me as I chase my filmmaking dreams. Tony Merzetti is my filmmaking brother and a great friend who has been a long time supporter of my filmmaking ambitions. Arthur Thomson was a major player in pushing me to begin filmmaking again when times were dark and bleak. Cat Leblanc's love and support has also made it possible for me to get through the recent challenges in my life so that I can continue to focus on my productions. I could go on all day on how every individual contributed in developing my renewed confidence, but I just want to thank everyone who worked on the film. I only have so much space, but I just want to say thanks to the New Brunswick Film Co-op and its membership community; this is our time so let's kick a little ass.

Tony and I are currently finishing the rough picture edit and the film looks great. I will place a trailer for the film online at some point. I hope (no pun intended) everyone that worked with me on Hopewell, will work with me this summer when I shoot Songbird (thank you to Linda Joy Media Arts, NB Joy, New Brunswick Film for their cash award,  New Brunswick Filmmakers' Co-operative for their equipment, resources and volunteer member crew and the other sponsors). without all these sponsors and more, I would not be able to do Songbird.

I want to personally thank Film New Brunswick as well and staff Margo Flewelling and Raynald Couturier for the Short Venture Award that has allowed me to produce Hopewell. I also want to thank the NB Film Co-op for their sponsorship of complimentary equipment, resources and volunteer member crew.

Finally, I am truly honored to have received the NB Linda Joy Award for Songbird. Catch you on the flip side.

Hey Cat,

Love the photo of you and your dad in the last e-news. And the list of Canadian films brought back some great memories, especially Lies My Father Told Me, The Bay Boy, and I've Heard the Mermaids Singing. I've yet to see Mon Oncle Antoine and Jesus of Montreal. I'd add to that list The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, not only because it's a fantastic movie of a wonderful novel by Mordecai Richer, but also because many of the scenes were shot in my hometown, Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts, Quebec! Richard Dreyfuss was 25, I believe, when he played 17-year-old Duddy. My older brother was an extra in it, a waiter at the resort. The filming was a big event in my little town (It was released in 1974. I can't remember if they were filming that summer or 1973). I'll have to find it again.

Gallery Connexion, Motion Ensemble, and Ingrid Mueller Art + Concepts are pleased to present UNSILENT NIGHT, by New York composer Phil Kline. A beautiful, mobile piece of ambient public art, UNSILENT NIGHT can be compared to a holiday caroling party except that participants don't sing. Instead, each carries an ordinary boombox playing a separate cassette or CD that becomes part of the piece.

In effect, the individual participants become single elements in a huge, moving sound system. Performed within the confines of Fredericton's city streets, Unsilent Night reverberates off the cars and buildings, resulting in a magnificent, drifting cloud of shimmering, echoing sound. The 43-minute piece includes sounds of chiming bells, choral voices and various electronic effects.
Gallery Connexion and Motion Ensemble brought UNSILENT NIGHT to Fredericton last year - for footage on the event visit the following website

http://images.justfred.ca/displayimage.php?album=629&pos=0&

The evening will begin at 7pm with a short performance by D'Arcy P. Gray and Andrew Miller of Motion Ensemble at Ingrid Mueller's Art + Concepts at 117 York Street, Fredericton NB.

Biz & Indie Film News

http://www.whoweare.cahttp://quinoussommes.ca/ is underway and looking for submissions!!!

ABOUT THE PROJECT
Whoweare.ca hopes to chip away at the impersonal face of immigration dominant in more traditional media outlets and instead presents a face whose parts comprise a mosaic that better reflects the diversity and individuality inherent in immigrant experiences.

The primary medium of these stories is short video documentaries submitted by users of the site. Using these videos as a centrepiece, Whoweare.ca provides a context through its blog, newsfeed, and user forum.

In response to the increased movement of people, cultures and ideas that cross our geographic and psychological borders, this website aims to offer a forum for the re-thinking of the single and simple words - "WE" - "NOUS". The site hopes that the theme of immigration will be explored from multiple points of view so as to generate thoughtful and relevant dialogue. Whether you'd like to share an experience, explore a topic, or bring up issues and questions that are on your mind- now is the time to speak up!!!

Check out the website, blogs and videos at: http://www.whoweare.ca/ - http://www.quinoussommes.ca/

The site's content is user-generated, so this is a resources whose potential will only be as great as that of the collective input. All formats, types and genres are welcome!

If you need further information, or have questions about a work that you would like to submit, please send me a mail (below) to know how to get involved. A selection process is underway for those submission of new (and some previously screened works) that will be eligible to receive license fees.
