NB Film Co-op Member Gia Milani won the 1st annual Slamdance Script Accessible Competition with her feature script “All the Wrong Reasons”.
From the SLAMDANCE Website:
2009 SCRIPT ACCESSIBLE COMPETITION
SLAMDANCE is proud to announce the winner, and finalists for the 1st Annual SCRIPT ACCESSIBLE AWARD. Screenplays considered in the SCRIPT ACCESSIBLE category highlighted characters with disabilities, or stories and themes pertinent to disabled people, and in many cases were penned by disabled writers. It's a world SLAMDANCE and award sponsor LONELY SEAL RELEASING are extremely passionate about, as the voice of disabled talent in this industry is far too often ignored. The winning writer will be honored on January 28th at the 2010 SLAMDANCE FILM FESTIVAL in Park City, Utah and prizes will be awarded then.
WINNER: "All the Wrong Reasons" - by Gia Milani
2) "Limbs" - by Danika Dinsmore
3) "Pretty To Think So" - by Roja Gashtili & Julia Lerman
4) "Love On Wheels" - by Russell Chok Hin Chan

Hi Cat and Tony,
I am soo excited to tell you and the members that I applied to Werner Herzog's film seminar in LA, and just found out that I have been accepted!
It's a 4-day conceptual (not technical) program with the director himself. I am ecstatic.
Here's a link to the school website, and an interview with him about
his new film "Bad Lieutenant"; he discusses the Rogue Film School at the end.
Amazing!

AHA GREATER MONCTON
NB Film Co-op’s Actors Helping Actors (AHA) Greater Moncton Group
Actors Helping Actors - Greater Moncton hits the ground running.
Following the innovative idea and success of AHA Fredericton, a call for membership to the newly introduced AHA - Greater Moncton received an overwhelming response. AHA is a great opportunity for actors to develop their skills while networking with other like-minded individuals at no cost to the members and we're very happy to be introducing it to the area.
Despite the busy season, a good number of applicants showed up for our first ever AHA Greater Moncton meeting in Shediac last night. This is the first group among a long list of applicants who hope for a spot in this seasons membership. These hopefuls came prepared and showed everyone what they were made of, and talented is the word.
Because it is important for each actor to take centre stage at every AHA session, there is a limited membership available. We are still accepting applications but they are being placed on a waiting list as we filter through the numerous applications already received. Given the interest, a second group may be initiated later this winter once our first group is established.
AHA Greater Moncton seeks actors of all levels. Successful membership is dependent on proven committment, availability, and dedication not only to the art of acting but to the group. Final membership will be announced in the next couple weeks.
AHA Greater Moncton thanks all those who have answered our call, and special thanks to the New Brunswick Filmmakers' Cooperative, Actors Helping Actors Fredericton, and Sobey's Shediac for their continued support. .
Happy Holidays.
Administrators of AHA - Greater Moncton.

FREDERICTON - MONDAY NIGHT FILM SERIES
Last Film Until September 2010 as Tilley Hall will be under construction starting in January 2010. Monday Night Film Series looks forward to launching again in a completely renovated theatre at Tilley in September of next year!
DEPARTURES
December 7, 8pm at Tilley Hall, UNB Campus
Director: Yojiro Takita
Cast: Masahiro Motoki, Tsutomu Yamazaki, Ryoko Hirosue, Kazuko Yoshiyuki
Run Time: 130 mins
Country: Japan
Year: 2009
Language: Japanese with English Subtitles
Academy Award® Winner for Best Foreign Language Film of the year, "Departures" is a delightful and sensitive journey into the heartland of Japan and an astonishingly beautiful look at a sacred part of Japan's cultural heritage.
A premiere symphony orchestra in Tokyo disbands, leaving Daigo Kobayashi (Masahiro Motoki) suddenly unemployed. Suffering from an innate sense that he is a mediocre musician, he faces up to the fact that not everyone who has devoted their life to music can become a top artist. With wife Mika (Ryoko Hirosue) in tow, he moves back to his home town in the northeastern prefecture of Yamagata. They move into the crumbling remains of his mother’s house, which doubled as the local pub.
Spotting a Help Wanted ad featuring the word “departures,” he is excited about the prospect of trying a new career in the travel industry. He arrives for the interview, curiously eyeing the coffins lining the back wall of the office. The company owner, Sasaki (Tsutomu Yamazaki), hires him on the spot, with only a cursory glance at his resume. Daigo finally ventures to ask what is involved, exactly, and is stunned to learn what he has gotten himself into: the ceremonial “encoffination” of corpses prior to cremation. Sasaki urges him to take the job, proffering large amounts of cash. He’s getting older, and needs someone to carry on the tradition.
In desperate straits, Daigo overcomes his initial trepidation and begins to travel around Hirano with Sasaki. Sasaki is comically matter-of-fact but firm in his directives and the contention that they are providing an important service to their community. Some cases are markedly traditional, featuring beatific family members in time-honored transition. Others highlight family dramas fraught with inevitable collisions, eased into unexpected conclusion. True to Sasaki’s expectations, Daigo develops a deep respect for life in all its variations, and a profound empathy for people trying to make peace with the finality of death.
Too embarrassed to tell his wife about his conversation-stopping profession and admit that he has fallen in love with the townsfolk, Daigo vainly tries to keep his new life secret. As their relationship hangs in the balance, the big question is how he’s going to react to surprising news she brings, as an encoffineer, as a husband, as a son and as a human being. It is Daigo’s turn to deal with life and death among the people who are dearest to him.
A story of love, of discovery, of revelation and of the transcending human spirit, "Departures" will linger in your heart and mind long after viewing.

FILM NEWS FOR SHOOTING IN NB
2010-2011 Budget - Greg Byrne, Minister of Finance
"Mr. Speaker, I am pleased to announce that the film tax credit will be extended by 10 years, until the end of 2019. Also, effective January 1, 2010, approved productions that take place more than 50 kilometres from our three largest cities will be eligible for an additional 10 per cent regional bonus. The film tax credit is 40 per cent of eligible salaries paid to New Brunswick residents and will be 50 per cent of eligible salaries qualifying for the regional bonus. Extending this tax credit for an additional 10 years will provide greater certainty for the industry that the tax credit will be in place. The regional bonus will provide incentives for film productions outside major centres. The province provides the film tax credit to encourage the training and hiring of New Brunswick film personnel."
