Spotlight!

AN ODE TO MIKE COWIE

We would like to wish a very fond goodbye the NB Film Co-op Technical Director Michael Cowie who has left his job at the Film Co-op.

Tony and I will really miss Mike who was an extremely hard worker and great to have around the old Co-op homestead. Mike was a high energy guy who was very protective of the Film Co-op gear and the staff.

Because Tony and I have no children, well, we do get attached to people when we work with them. So Mikey as I sometimes called him became family. I did try to fatten the lad up but he was born to be skinny. My favorite memory of Mike will always be when we worked on Tim Rayne's short film venture film Hopewell (thanks to a cash grant from NB Film and equipment, resources and people from NB Film Co-op) and on one day right in the middle of setup for a scene Tim Rayne was so happy about how things were going that he picked up Mike in a big bear hug and swung his little skinny body around several times. The look on Mike's face was priceless and is now burned in my memory.

Mike is a great cameraman and editor. He is also an excellent AD on film sets with his most recent production being Sam Grana's feature film production Dog Pound .

We wish him the very best in all his future creative endeavors whether they be in NB or beyond and hope to see him at the upcoming NBFC member Christmas Party so we can catch up with all his news.

Mike may not be working at the Film Co-op anymore but we are sure he will pop in from time to time to let us know how he is doing.

If you want to drop a line to Mike to say hello and wish him a Merry Christmas:  michael.a.cowie@gmail.com

You can also catch Mike on facebook.

HOLD THE PRESS! - NEW FREDERICTON MEMBER - EMILY READY

Fredericton based Emily Ready’s first on stage experience took play while she was still in her mother’s womb, as she performed in Brigadoon. Emily spent her childhood watching her mother perform in various shows, and it wasn’t long before she, too, began acting. Emily’s acting debut was in Celeste Raspanti’s I Never Saw Another Butterfly at the age of eleven.

She has taken part in many shows since then and recently appeared as Nurse in William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. It wasn’t until the fall of 2007, however, that Emily began working with film. After reading Ryan O’toole’s script of The Best of Them, Emily spent five months working as the producer of this film which they submitted to the first ever Fredericton High School Film Festival. Emily is proud do have taken part in a movie that led her to the NB Film Co-op, and hopes to work other members to gain more experience in the area.

FREDERICTON - MARC BASQUE

Born in Saint John and raised in Fredericton, Marc has been trained as an ambulance attendant for 25 years, and has been employed as a paramedic since 1998. He has volunteered with the St. John Ambulance for over 30 years, and has served in several executive positions. He has been an instructor/instructor-trainer in many levels of healthcare courses since 1986, and has been a casualty simulator (a makeup artist for mock medical exercises/testing) since 1992.

Marc's film/television experience mostly has been as an on-site medic for several productions including: A Midwife's Tale, Ricky 6, Starhunter, Peter York, Frozen with Fear, Canada Russia 72, and Dark Waters of Crime. He has also done SPFX makeup in the NB Film Co-op member productions: Homeless, Unseen Enemy, The Devil's Tide and Assassins. Marc may be cursed when it comes to being an extra though. He has had two performances: one, in a movie produced by Jerry Springer (that reportedly never was finished); the other, in Frozen with Fear (where you see little more than his two arms).

He's always ready to lend Film Co-p members a hand at building sets. His dad is a retired carpenter, who he's assisted with the construction of several homes. He also enjoys singing, and is a member in his church choir. Marc has been member of the Film Co-o over a little over a year, and has enjoyed taking workshops since joining.

Email Marc if you need help on your production at: marc.basque@ambulancenb.ca or by phone: 450-3251

FREDERICTON - UPCOMING EXHIBITIONS AT GALLERY CONNEX

All three upcoming exhibitions are organized by Gallery Connexion and graciously being hosted by the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in their lower level gallery space at 703 Queen Street, Fredericton NB. Gallery Connexion continues the search for a new home.

100 Stories About My Grandmother - Peter Kingstone - Jan. 24 to March 7 / 09

Opening: Saturday, Jan. 24 - 5 to 7pm

Workshop: Community Based Video Art (making a video on a small budget and getting it seen): Sunday, Jan. 25 - 1 to 4pm

Peter Kingstone works with video and photography, often experimenting with narrative strategy to explore ideas of personal history and the intangible nature of truth. His new documentary work 100 Stories About My Grandmother, is a four channel video installation weaving together portraits of male sex trade workers telling stories about their grandmothers. Sharing family stories may seem banal, but inviting sex trade workers to do so becomes a way of including them in a society all too frequently eager to reject them. Audiences are invited to spend time lounging and listening to the thoughts and memories of an often marginalized community, allowing the talked-about to talk, giving a voice to those who have been voiceless.

Master Printmakers 3/3 - Paule Mainguy - March 12 to April 25 / 09

Opening: Thursday, March 12 - 5 to 7pm

*Artist Talk and Demonstration with Press: Saturday, March 14 - 1pm

*at the UNB Art Centre, Memorial Hall, 9 Bailey Drive, UNB Campus

Paule Mainguy is the third Master Printmaker in a series of three to be showcased at Gallery Connexion over the course of three years. Mainguy is currently working in Montreal, Quebec as the Master Printmaker in residence at Atelier Circulaire. Mainguy will be exhibiting a selection of original prints from artists' editions she has pulled over the years. The first Master Printmaker showcased in 2007 was David Umholtz who exhibited a survey of his work including mono prints, woodcuts with hand colouring, etchings with papier colle, linocuts, and a watercolour. He is currently living and working on Deer Island, NB. The second Master Printmaker shown in 2008 was Robert Van de Peer, Master Printmaker in residence at Sunbury Shores Art and Nature Centre in Saint Andrews, NB. His exhibition, titled 'Then and Now' consisted of two parts; the first were works dealing with earlier printmaking techniques using the old toxic processes in the medium of etching. The second part demonstrated the use of toxic free materials and the advantages gained.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Effections - Immony Men - April 30 to June 13 / 09

Opening: Thursday, April 30 - 5 to 7pm

Artist Talk: Saturday, May 2 - 1pm

"'Effections' is a series of video installations based on a labour-intensive process. Each installation is a video composed of digital prints illustrating different components of intimate relations. The show addresses the stories and physical remnants of the union, whether it be the time, space, or memory the two units have shared. The installations will also depict the fond memories of actions and reactions of a relationship. The gesture of crumpling moments and reviewing the discards plays on my interests. 'Effections' is a physical reflection of a process. It questions where we go from there."

NCREATIVE ARTIST LOOKING TO GET INVOLVED IN THE FILM & TELEVISION COMMUNITY IN NB

My name is Andrew Davenport and I grew up in Centreville, New Brunswick.

In my senior year at Carleton North High School, my Visual Arts teacher, Mrs. Galbraith, suggested that I think about NBCC-Miramichi for the Art Fundamentals program. After graduation, I followed through on her advice, which seemed like the obvious thing to do since I've been drawing as long as I can remember.

During Art Fundamentals, my basic drawing skills were enhanced and I had the chance to explore and develop different media such as painting and sculpture. After completing this year, I continued on to take the Animation and Graphics Technology course, which was offered at NBCC-Miramichi as well. Throughout these two years, I developed a strong understanding of traditional animation. As the end of my course approached, job opportunities came up, and a first-time Internship program at the Department of National Defense was offered for graduates around New Brunswick. I applied for a position, got my shot at an interview, and landed the job; therefore, I moved to Fredericton.

There were approximately 30 interns hired at "The Base." At first, it was a little rough getting us situated with projects that matched our individual skills. I started off doing more graphic design and web development work, and eventually I was re-positioned to work on some 3D animation based projects. Because I had the opportunity to work with different media, I realised that I could do a lot more, and I began thinking about different job opportunities. At the end of my internship, I received an advanced diploma in my field of study.

I still live in Fredericton where I have a part time job and do creative work for my friends and family to keep me busy. I continue to look for creative work, whether it is animation, illustration, or graphic design.

Give me a shout at: andrew_dx@hotmail.com
