RALPH PRITCHARD, SHEDIAC, NB
Three Sundays and three evenings in August of 2008, that’s what it took to shoot Forever Lost, a supernatural thriller about a not so normal family impacted by greed and corruption. “I didn’t want the cast and crew to give up 2 solid weekends in an already short summer, so we came up with a schedule that worked for us” says writer, director and producer Ralph Pritchard, Shediac, NB. “Even at that the Sundays were only 8 hour days and the week nights were 3-4 hours.”
What makes this film so unique is the number of special effects that will be incorporated inside of 15 minutes and that number is 54. “Viewers will see things like a car blowing up in front of a school with 2 people in it, dead people passing through solid objects, smoke being manipulated into letters, people levitating, the fiery gates of hell opening up and swallowing victims, souls being drawn out of the dead and so on.” “There are a lot but not so many that it will detract from the story.”
So what does it take to pull this off so that it doesn’t look like amateur night at You Tube? “Many, many hours of painstaking, detailed rotoscoping”, says Ralph. For those unfamiliar with the term it means meticulously manipulating every frame of video with up to 200 points of reference per frame. “The 5 second video where the deceased father passes through the closed car door took 7 hours per second equally 35 hours.” “Each of the 200 points of reference that surrounded his fingers, arms, head, body, etc. had to be individually moved frame by frame to follow his motion thereby giving the illusion of passing through the car door.” Ralph is using Adobe After Effects as his main tool for doing these effects. “I have been going flat out in the editing room for the past several months, but in the end I think viewers will be pleased.”
Forever Lost received a Short Film Venture grant from Film New Brunswick in 2008 and hopes to be seen at this year’s Silver Wave Film Festival. You can visit the production site and view some special FX clip samples. Be sure to check out the various shot, location, cast, etc. lists under “Reports” that were produced by Gorilla, a software designed specifically for filmmaking planning.
Ralph received a grant to produce his calling card short film through the Short Film Venture Program. NB Film gives out the much needed cash component of the grant and the New Brunswick Filmmakers' Co-operative provides the full complimentary professional equipment package, volunteer member crew resources as well as post production facility access.

RENEWED MEMBERS FOR 2009 RENEWED MEMBERS FOR 2009
CONRAD STEEVES - PROSSER BROOK
Returning for his tenth year as a NB Film Co-op member is Conrad Steeves. After logging in hundreds of hours at three community television stations Conrad joined the NB Film Co-op with the intention of furthering his technical skills as a crew member and to gain experience as an actor.
Shortly after volunteering his time as a Boom Operator and Grip on the 1999 short film "Hopeful Losers" in which he considers the highlight of his membership at the NB Film Co-op he discovered his true calling as a Director. He began writing original screenplays for short and feature length projects which continues unabated to this day.
Conrad expresses numerous ideas, feelings and polemics in his screenplays such as the relationships between men and women or an uncompromising social critique at the mediocrity and anti-intellectualism prevalent in today's society. He is a very strong supporter of creativity and originality and is never afraid to reject any unwelcomed interference that would sabotage his quality standards of film production. His one and only film A Dream of Life is used as an example for his reference point of filmmaking of which he is determined to maintain or to exceed for his future films.
As a prolific screenwriter and ambitious filmmaker Conrad has taken the first steps to be an indie producer with the formation of Maya Pictures. The purpose of this new enterprise to empower himself with the support of international co-producers to direct the numerous feature length screenplays he has written over the past ten years. Currently he is in pre-production of a few projects such as an essay film and a 30 minute drama. He is also in development of a script inspired by the surrealistic films of Luis Buñuel and Maya Deren.

CHRIS FULTON - MIRAMICHI
Self-professed renaissance-man and all-round good egg, Chris Fulton joined the NB Film Co-op in 2006 to near-universal critical acclaim (i.e., a Tomatometer of 85%).
He earned some filmmaking cred under the cruel tutelage of some New Brunswick filmmaking veterans and, in summer 2008, cashed-in some goodwill to produce Gamers' Manifesto with Josh Linton. Gamers' went on to win four Silver Wave Awards in 2008, including Best NB Short Comedy.
When not working on his own projects, Chris volunteers and offers script support & critique and does crew work for other Co-op members. Chris was the instructor of the Directing workshop through the Film Co-op's annual workshop series recently.
Chris is currently working on some new film projects for 2009, with plans to resuscitate his first (shelved) production, "Manic Chiropractic" in the not-too-distant future.

RALF CASSIDY BINDELS - PETITCODIAC
Composer Ralf Cassidy Bindels has been actively involved in the music and recording industries for more than fifteen years, among many other projects remixing the music of Moby and Depeche Mode, working as part of a production team that included Carlos Peron of Yello, and receiving a German Film Award for one of his soundtracks.
When the German-born Canadian came to Canada Cassidy Bindels was drawn to the small town lifestyle in New Brunswick; finding it stimulated him musically - and also that clients and collaborators seek him out regardless of where they are located.
Soon after his arrival he made a name for himself as an innovative and first-class composer and his music has been featured in cinemas across Northamerica and Europe, on television, at film festivals, on the internet and in games.
"Composing music for film is an enormously difficult discipline - Ralf has a gift not only
for composition but an innate understanding of how music enhances a story, not just complements it. That, and he's terrific to work with." Doug Sutherland, Film Director
To learn more about Ralf's areas of work and/or to listen to his sound samples please feel free to visit www.groovingfarm.com

FREDERICTON - MONDAY NIGHT FILM SERIES!
LET THE RIGHT ONE IN
February 16, 8pm at Tilley Hall, UNB Campus
Director: Tomas Alfredson
Cast: Kåre Hedebrant, Lina Leandersson, Per Ragnar, Henrik Dahl
Run Time: 115 minutes
Country: Sweden
Year: 2008
Language: Swedish with English
subtitles
Oskar (Kåre Hedebrant) is a 12-year-old outcast who is frequently picked on by his classmates. He dreams of getting his revenge, but he never stands up to the boys.
With the arrival of his new next-door neighbor, 12-year-old Eli (Lina Leandersson), Oskar may finally have found a friend, ally, and first love. But Eli is no ordinary girl: she must keep her pale skin out of the sunlight, she can perform inhuman physical feats, and she has thirst for blood. The bodies begin to pile up, but Oskar can't stay away from the girl who has finally given him courage.
Based on the novel by John Ajvide Linqvist (who also wrote the script), LET THE RIGHT ONE IN is the best kind of horror film: one that transcends the tropes of the genre to become something new. This is director Tomas Alfredson's first foray into horror, and he doesn't hesitate to include bits of vampire mythology. But his background making comedies and dramas gives the film a surprising depth; the relationship between Oskar and Eli is tentative and sweet, even though their interactions may be surrounded by blood and violence.
Though LET THE RIGHT ONE IN is ostensibly about a pair of children, this is a horror film for adults. There are plenty of scares, but it remains moving and intelligent, a rare feat for the genre.

FREDERICTON @theplayhouse MOVE! Series presents Toronto Dance Theatre
Friday, February 13, 2009 at 8 PM
A dance for the twenty-first century, Christopher House’s Timecode Break is about time, presence and the ephemeral beauty of the body. Choreographed simultaneously for stage and screen, it integrates razor-sharp dancing with gorgeous video images to create a brave new kinetic landscape. Timecode Break is intertwines dance and video by incorporating a compelling video design by Nico Stagias (http://www.stagias.com/). “Split screens allows Stagias to isolate just part of an arm or a leg, or put one movement in a loop. There are also full and partial head shots of the dancers interpolated with their movement to give a burst of humanity to the abstraction” (except of Globe and Mail review by Paula Citron, June 6, 2006).
Yours to discover, this ultra modern stage production will open your eyes to a whole new avenue of dance.
The performance is also part of the In Conversation series which gives patrons a chance to talk with the choreographer Christopher House following the show. In Conversation takes place at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery and includes complimentary glass of wine and sweets. Tickets are complimentary but need to be requested from the box office: http://www.theplayhouse.ca/event_detail_conversation.aspx?ID=58

NB - AS SCENE FROM HERE, THERE AND EVERYWHERE
By Jimson
NEW DIRECTIONS
Being from away (Ottawa), I sometimes suffer from tunnel vision, self-Inflicted of course, and requiring input from others to expand my horizons.
With your help. I am going to continue to try to make this column inclusive of everybody working in film and video in NB.
As I do this on my own time as a volunteer and am not required by anyone to write about anything specific, I never really thought about all of this until now! So, commencing In April (I will be away in Ottawa and busy on other things until then), I will expand my info base provincially but I need your help to do so. If you have a short update, photo, etc…….please send to me jimlavoie@rogers.com
I started this column with the idea of highlighting the Co-op, its members and other arts happenings in a light and hopefully humorous fashion within the e-news. I leave the big stuff for Cat do deal with which she expertly files each and every week in the greater e-news. If you have information to share during my MIA period please feel free to contact Cat. I love doing this but if anyone wants to have at er, go for it, I will miss my pay (Zero) lol, but that's life!
FISHING FOR FACTS IN ST. ANDREWS
As is the case for a lot of us who work on SWFF as volunteers, I never get to see every entry because of time constraints. While at Tim Rayne's screenwriting workshop recently I met someone who was telling me about her first film which was a short documentary that screened at SWFF in 07. I admit right here forgetting sometimes that I can watch films done by other members through the Film Co-op library.
Thanks to NBFC member Sarah Bood from St. Andrews, whose documentary Sharing the Waters I watched for the first time, for opening my idea bank for future topics etc… I do not have the technical background to make a statement and am also not a critic but I will say this upper Canuck now knows a lot more about the in shore fishery industry in NB and their trials and tribulations to co-exist with commercial shipping. I also received a much need tutorial on the geographical layout of New Brunswick.
The film by showing all these things, wisely realizes that not everybody in the audience watching knows a certain area or its geographic layout in NB. I have been in Fredericton for a number of years and I love sports but I have missed many a game because the sports section said, "Game at 7:00pm tonight at Flung Dung Field" but, no address was listed. That's like me writing and saying, see "Debbie Does Dallas playing at 6:00pm." I refuse to ask or go to anything that doesn't give you the needed specifics! Well maybe for Deb………

YOUNG FILM BUFF SELECTED TO BE ON JURY PANEL FOR VIEWFINDERS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL FOR YOUTH
Carlee Calver was recently selected to be on a jury for Viewfinders, here is her submitted critical review of HOTEL FOR DOGS.
DreamWorks Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies in association with Cold Spring Pictures A Donners' Company / Montecito Pictures Company Production
Director: Troy Freudenthal
Novel: Hotel for Dogs by Lois Duncan, 1971
Screenplay: Jeff Lowell, Bob Schooley, and Mark McCorkle
Starring:
Andi (Emma Roberts)
Bruce (Jake T. Austin)
Dave (Johnny Simmons)
Heather (Kyla Pratt)
Mark (Troy Gentile)
Lois Scudder (Lisa Kudrow)
Carl Scudder (Kevin Dillon)
Bernie (Don Cheadle)
Carol (Robinne Lee)
Also Starring:
Friday - Friday is Andi and Bruce's dog. He has to be hidden from their mean foster parents, Lois and Carl Scudder.
Lenny & Georgia - Lenny and Georgia were living alone in an old hotel that becomes the "Hotel for Dogs".
Cooper - Cooper will eat anything.
Shep - Shep is a Border Collie who keeps everything in order.
Juliet & Romeo - Juliet, a white Poodle, and Romeo, a Chinese Crested Poodle, form an "odd couple" and love interest that keeps the movie oooohhh so cute.
Viola & Sebastien - Viola and Sebastien are twins that are inseparable since birth.
Chelsea - Chelsea is a three legged dog due to an accident, abandoned at vet's clinic by owner.
Madison - Madison was abandoned in the back yard when her owner's moved.
Frick & Frack - Frick & Frack were abandoned when their owner died.
Snicker - Snicker is a Yorkshire Terrier who was abandoned by his owner when he would no longer fit in her purse.
Jessica - Jessica is a husky who was abandoned when she could no longer have puppies to be sold.
A.C.O. - Animal Control Officers - These men try to capture all the stray dogs but are not successful against Andi, Bruce and their friends.
"Hotel for Dogs" is a heartwarming movie about two young orphans, Andi and Bruce, who try to protect their dog, "Friday", from their evil 'rock-star wannabe' foster parents and the Animal Control Officers in their community, and end up saving all the stray dogs in town with the help of their friends, Dave, Heather and Mark.
This is a great movie for kids of all ages. There are poop and pee jokes for the younger children, and love interests for older kids.
Bruce is a brilliant 11 year old inventor who constructs many tools and devices to help take care of the dogs in the Hotel. He makes a pooper scooper that wraps dog poop in little baggies and shoots them into a trash bin outside of the building, along with many other attractions for the dogs including a stick fetching machine, a fire hydrant that attracts dogs to pee on it and then cleans itself after it is used, an automatic feeding conveyor belt, and many, many more machines!
Andi is a kind-hearted 16 year old who accidentally decides that they (Andi, Bruce, Dave, Mark and Heather) should work together to save all the local stray dogs and create the Hotel for Dogs. After many funny adventures, the dogs are captured by the Animal Control Officers. A heroic last-ditch attempt to save the dogs from death fails when the dogs return to their home, the Hotel for Dogs, rather than running across a bridge to a County where there is a "no-kill" policy, and the dogs are trapped by the Animal Control Officers in their home. But, a surprise ending awaits you. And you'll have to see the movie to find out about the ending.
Why Choose Me for the Jury Panel for Viewfinders?
I want to be chosen as a member of the Jury Panel for "Viewfinders: International Film Festival for Youth" because I am very interested in acting and film production. I believe that an opportunity such as this will help me to learn how to write better movie reviews and eventually gain employment as a writer, actress, and film producer.
