MEMBER UPDATES/MEMBER UPDATES/MEMBER UPDATES
Dennis Poirier is currently unemployed. It is not sad news as he has time to explore his once hidden talent of drawing. Combined with his growing knowledge of storytelling, Dennis is pursuing his life long dream to publish a graphic novel. "Planet Fiction- the story of Imagi-Nation," was written as a novel a few years ago. Dennis felt the description of his world was too narrow for just words. "Since my teens I've been drawing these really interesting characters", explains Dennis; "that a simple text description did not do the story justice. You have to see what I see." ... JORDAN BEST
My name is Jordan Best, I was born May 27th 1992 and I have been making films ever since I was 11 years old. I bought Hollywood High through scholastic. A game where you create your own cartoon movies, you select a background, characters, audio, choose actions and make the characters move across the screen. But the best part was the text-to-speech that made their mouths move to their hilarious electronic voices. This made for some hilarious, ridiculous and of course bizarre movies that an 11 year old boy and his friends could come up with.
When I was about 14 I began making some movies at home using the dreaded windows movie maker to edit, I wanted people to see my movies so I posted them to youtube, eventually I started using Sony Vegas to edit my films. I have completed about 40 films to date; they range from stop motion, to short films, parody's, spoofs. I have taken 3 media courses in high school: Media Studies, Media Productions and Advanced Media Productions; I have done videos in all of those courses. I filmed and edited a video for RBC, which promoted the Olympics as well as RBC and the community.
My most recent film is called The Eh Team which is hilarious and I would love to show it to members of the film co-op. I have spent 15 weeks as an intern at the Postman Post-Production studio through my co-op course in high school. I learned a lot from the guys and even used Avid to edit 2 of my film projects for adv media pro. I love being of a part of making films no matter what job it is. I specifically love to write, edit, direct, and do cinematography. I am excellent at writing comedy and even consider doing stand up. I also like to write more serious films as I have many creative ideas that go through my head. I would love to help the members of the film co-op with their productions and of course I will eventually need some help with my own films.

JENNIFER MERSEREAU
Film Co-op member Jennifer Mersereau was introduced to the Film Co-op by filmmaker member Tim Rayne. Tim then asked her to work on his film Hopewell as Script Supervisor and she really enjoyed that experience. She was then asked to work on Tony Merzetti's cultural capital historical drama, Francis Sherman: When All Is Said And Done.
Jen's husband Larry, who is a professional animator, recently joined the Co-op as well and will be teaching two animation workshops through the Film Co-op's annual workshop series.

RENEWED MEMBERS RENEWED MEMBERS RENEWED MEMBERS
It has been a busy 2010 for me even though it is only February but I feel as if I have done a year's worth of work in this short amount of time. I have been juggling many responsibilities as I have been writing a few feature-length screenplays, filling out film proposals and making contacts with our neighbours down south, in France, and in Italy.
One such contact is a veteran filmmaker/producer who read my proposal for a feature-length film and he agreed to be my mentor once he has completed his own film in late spring. This is an opportunity I look forward to very much as I branch out internationally with my film projects and his guidance will lead me to the success I longed for over the past decade since I joined the NB Film Co-op in 1999. I even took the giant step to apply as Director for a film in development from a screenplay co-written by one of my favourite filmmakers Michelangelo Antonioni. Even though I didn't land the job I now have contact with a production company interested in director-driven films which suits me perfectly so I will work diligently to nurture these opportunities presented to me.
I still intend to pursue film projects in my own home province as I prepare to direct my ciné-essay In Search of Dionysian Days this summer. This is a project exploring the influences and philosophical themes behind my novel in progress Dionysian Days and my first project as a cinematographer. Plans are under way for me to direct the short film Autumn in Blue and the feature-length film Between the Waves so I have a busy schedule as I continue to work to make my film dreams come true.

The Arts
Building a sustainable arts community in New Brunswick
ArtsLink NB begins an exploration to join all province's artists and arts organizations.
Beginning February 17, 2010, ArtsLink NB will begin a search for all of New Brunswick's artists, including painters, writers, poets, performing artists, dancers, film and video makers, fine craft makers, potters, actors and more.
"Our goal is to have professional and emerging artists, arts organizations and supporters of the arts join ArtsLink NB and build a cohesive voice for the arts in New Brunswick. We are looking for artists from every discipline and every region," says Sandy MacKay, ArtsLink NB's Executive Director.
ArtsLink NB is offering artists, arts organizations and supporters a free one-year membership to actively engage them with this new provincial arts networking organization. The offer is open until June 30 2010, for the 2010/11 membership period.
"Our goal is to build a positive environment for the arts, in which artists and arts organizations can be sustainable. On average, a professional artist in New Brunswick earns approximately $15,642 annually and the majority of arts organizations operate in peril. This needs to change.
Traditionally, different disciplines of arts have worked in isolation. We believe that formally joining all of the arts together is the only way we can take the arts community to a new level in this province,to strengthen the cultural community and to develop the creative economy."
Through a series of forums, ArtsLink NB members will develop common goals and programs, including business and marketing workshops, mentoring, public awareness and arts education initiatives.
ArtsLink NB will reach out to the province's artists using public media, on-line resources, municipal events listings, organizations' newsletters, ArtsLink NB's website, www.artslinknb.com , facebook and twitter sites and popular indie artist sites like the NB Film Co-op.

FREDERICTON - SPECIAL SCREENING EVENT!
THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERATOR invites us into a world where science meets fiction — breathing poetic meaning into archival films and revealing a little-known chapter in industrial history.
The 20th century had its invisible workforce: telephone operators. Not only were they "voices with a smile," they were shooting stars in a universe of infinite progress, test pilots for the management systems of their time.
Caroline Martel takes overlooked artifacts of cinema history — one hundred industrial, advertising and scientific management films produced in North America between 1903 and 1989, which together shed light on the corporate, scientific and popular imaginations of the past century — and turns them into a dreamlike montage documentary.
THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERATOR has been critically acclaimed around the world following its world premiere at TIFF in 2004. It was short listed for the Canada's Top-10 and was screened in some 50 prestigious venues such as Taipei, Full Frame, Leipzig and Créteil Festivals, as well as at the Mipcom market in Cannes. After a US premiere at the Museum of Modern Art, PHANTOM won the Best Experimental Film Award at the Brooklyn Underground Film Festival, and was a hit in San Francisco.
" …shows that Canadian true-life stories need not only appeal to Canadian audiences."
Cahiers du cinéma
"Can't wait to see what Martel will do next…"
Talking Pictures, BBC World TV
"the kind of intelligent and dedicated work
that will live on for much longer than the flavour of the moment."
Village VOICE
"... an enormously imaginative docu ... an hour of nonstop visual and intellectual stimulation."
