NATHAN BLAGDON

Allow myself to introduce...myself. Okay, so I stole that from Austin Powers. Let's just say I borrowed it. I also borrowed $60,000 from the Government of Canada to get educated.

Education. Over the course of six years, I bounced between four institutions (Dalhousie - Science; Ryerson - Image Arts; Loyalist College - Photojournalism; and UNB - Multi Media) and haven't a single piece of paper to show for any of it. Does that even classify as an education? Now they say I have to pay back the $60, 000. Seriously?

But where was I? I'm lost. Oh right, past experiences relevant to filmic aspirations. So when I said before that I don't have a single piece of paper to show for my scholastic endeavours, I was lying. I told a little story.

I did, in fact, finish the two-year photo-J program, graduating in 2007. I then completed an internship with the Ottawa Citizen and continued freelancing in our nation's capital for the following year, before settling in Fredericton. Now, journalism has faded to the background while consumer-based photography has been dragged to the forefront (see my work at www.nathanluke.com). Consumer work can be a lacklustre field.

In my eyes, photojournalism used to shine. Because I held photography in a light of infallibility ("photos don't lie"), I saw photojournalism as the pinnacle of honest storytelling. In recent years, however, this belief has washed out, and I have a mounting desire for more exposure to film. I can't quite say why.

Maybe it's the remnants of an old philosophy class rearing its ungroomed, white-bearded head, questioning the nature of photojournalism. A photo is presented to the public as a fact, but its effect is controlled by news industry gatekeepers. Just Google "oj simpson time magazine cover." Suffice to say, I believe filmmakers, unlike journalists, aren't so bound by facts.

Maybe the value of a story can be measured by its effectiveness. A First Nations proverb says, "It takes a thousand voices to tell a single story." I like this. Whether you think Avatar is an intelligent film or not, it can't be robbed of its real, popular impact. It's a story that won't soon be forgotten. How many people are going to remember today's headlines in The New York Times?

So perhaps film is reeling me in because I desire to be more effective as a storyteller. Or maybe I just can't find enough freelance photo work. Nah, I shouldn't say that. It'd be self-depreciative. This is a bio after all. It's a licence for shameless self-promotion...

Those who believe in me (like my Mom :) might say I have creative skills - an eye for aesthetics, an ear for musical trends and potential for a voice...but I'm quiet. Those who know me, however, would say I have nomadic tendencies. I need guidance. I lack direction...which brings me now to the New Brunswick Filmmakers' Co-operative.

I'm looking forward to getting out of the creative closet and meeting people in the film community. I'm excited to learn from others. I want to volunteer and to help create. I want to tell stories.

RENEWED MEMBERS   RENEWED MEMBERS  RENEWED MEMBERS

2009 was a pretty awesome year for me. Not only did my Short Film Venture winning film " The Morning After " premiere at the Atlantic Film festival, followed by an awesome reception by the home crowd at Silver Wave, I was able to shoot another short piece in August with a mini crew. True Hollywood Romance is currently in the sound edit phase of post production and my two sound men are hard at work. I also had the pleasure of working on several projects as script supervisor ( So Long and Good Night, Super Geek Math Boy, Broke, Venus In Flames ) and assistant director ( Manic Chiropractic, Déliverance ). Three of the films premiered at Silver Wave and the other three will be submitted and hope to be screened at SWFF this November. Some special memories worth mentioning are Mike Mallaley's super hero suit, the massive green screens at Kings Landing, re-vamping an old script to make an award winning film, and having the most fun I've ever had on a dramatic shoot with the Moncton crew. I also managed to score a paid gig with a production company from Montreal, doing script supervisor for a set of Pizza Delight commercials. It was a lot of fun, and I was thankful for the opportunity.

2010 is already off to a roaring start. Between acting as PM and AD for Tim Rayne's Songbird , script supervisor for Joel Thompson's Boxface , and AD on Paul Angers' The Dollmaker , I am also dabbling in the world of producing. Allen Galloway's film, set to be shot in March, is the first film I have produced but not directed. There are many challenges that are new to me, but it is a lot of fun collaborating with Allen and coming up with a vision that we are both very excited to create. I am also producing a project of my own, currently titled D&D: A Love Story . The film will have elements of fantasy, action, comedy, and romance, and is by far the most ambitious script I have ever produced. With costumes ranging from monsters and suits of armor to 1980s inspired fashion, and cinematography inspired by Hollywood and independent cinema, it should be a challenge and I am very excited to see where I can take it.

Above picture is me on the set of Super Geek Math Boy!

SCREENWRITING

Intro - Theory and Hands-on
Feb 6, Saturday, 11am - 5pm
Instructor: Tim Rayne
Location: New Brunswick Film
Co-op, basement resource centre, 732 Charlotte Street, Fredericton
Fee: $20 For NBFC Members/$30 For Non-Members

(Film Co-op Members are required to take at least one screenwriting course before they direct/produce their own projects through the Film Co-op)

Class Limit: 10

THIS WORKSHOP HAS TWO SPACES LEFT! EMAIL INFO@NBFILMCOOP.COM TO REGISTER

This screenwriting workshop takes a different approach and will not provide you with a format, ahem, template for creating unorthodox screenplays. This is exactly what the workshop is about: getting away from these rules that bogged down many great aspiring and established screenwriters with details, plot points, reversals, camera angles etc etc....

Remember to learn the rules before you break them though!

INSTRUCTOR'S BIOGRAPHY

Tim Rayne joined the NB Film Co-op in 1998 and has worked on independent and commercial film productions and learned theoretical film concepts in graduate classes in film studies at Carleton University. Tim directed and wrote his own films including Hopewell (Short Venture Program), Natural Remedy with co-director and co-writer Tony Merzetti (2001), and Soup Du Jour (1999). Tim has also taught directing workshops at the NB Filmmakers' Co-operative and will be shooting his latest film Songbird in February (NB Joy Award Winner).

MONCTON -  FILM SOCIETY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

TICKET TAKER AND MEMBERSHIP DESK

On each night we have one person at the door taking tickets and another selling memberships. It would be nice to have three people working each night even though, strictly speaking, we only need two. Some of our volunteers go on trips and we seem to be short one person often enough. You should be able to attend each week but if there are three people working and you can’t make it for one week or so then the other two persons working will be enough.

Of course you will be able to stay for the movie the night that you work and see it for free.

If you are not able to work weekly but can help us out on an as needed basis, we are still interested in hearing from you.

DISTRIBUTION OF BROCHURES

We print a brochure three times a year: September, November and February. These brochures are distributed to 40+ locations around town. One person has been doing this job marvelously for a long time and we need one or two persons to share this vital task.

The time commitment would be 2-3 hours over one or two days each time the programs are printed. For your efforts you will get, what else, passes to films.

FIRST STUDIO OPENING at NBCCD's The Gallery on Thursday, February 11, 2010, 5 pm. Be Part of the Red Carpet audience...

Title: Fashion Parade to start studio shows in the Gallery at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design in Fredericton.

On February 11 at 5 pm you can be part of an exclusive audience flanking a red carpet runway on the first floor of the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design where models will strut the designs of our graduating fashion design students and their "creative challenge" creations.

Refashioning Film takes a look at Hollywood and its influence on fashion, and fashion designers.

"We all watch films," said fashion studio head Ellen Woolaver, "and we spend a lot of time talking about them."

One day, in class, the students were watching a documentary on the topic of Hollywood's influence on the fashion world. The class was geared toward infusing the students' minds with ideas for creating. It just so happened that 2010 was also a scheduled year for the studio fashion show in The Gallery. Suddenly it struck the class that film could be that tie without taking away anyone's individuality. Ellen Woolaver said that her third year group is incredibly diverse, and needed a cohesive concept to pull everyone's ideas together. Every student could choose a film and spin her own interpretation on a design for the show. Refashioning Film was born.

Location shots - environmental portraits collaboratively styled by the fashion designers and photographer Jeff Crawford extend this show. The Gallery will be full of images of the models on site throughout the city, and the dresses will be placed on "Judys" after the live model opening night.

Please join us for this special event, and the first student exhibition of 2010. For more information contact Karen Ruet at The Gallery 457-6805 or email karen.ruet@gnb.ca
